Suzy, if you wanted to just get a last minute flight and go quickly for a few days I'm sure a few EWers would help you out. I could potentially help with school runs for example for the rest of the week. If you listed what you needed help with we could pull a plan together and you'd also have Careem/maid agencies etc. I'm just saying if it's that that is holding you back then we could work something out. Otherwise, yes it's an unfortunate part of Expat living. Sometimes what our friends/family think is that we are all here living the high life and able to jet around all over the place at a moment's notice, when it is often just too difficult and expensive. Thinking of you. Count me in to help out, too, Suzy. Seriously. If you possibly can, go and give her a hug whilst she's alive. The funeral doesn't matter. If you can't manage it, through circumstances you describe, don't beat yourself up but just keep reaching out to her the ways you already are, to let her know you care. Hugs.

Hi, there, OP and welcome to Dubai and huge congratulations on the positive pregnancy test! I am too old to have given birth here, but if I'd been pregnant now, I would have chosen Dr Jennifer, who is at Mediclinic, Al Garhoud. http://www.mediclinic.ae/DoctorDetails.aspx?drid=319 She's a lovely, down to earth, lady and even though she is from the US, as someone who, like you, is from the UK, I think I can safely tell you that you will appreciate her manner and care. Good luck and congratulations again! Simples that's a classic of a post........... Oops - best remove my foot from my mouth.. Lovely fireworks I can't see or hear..

She has been retired. She did briefly consider being Solanum tuberosum ;) PS glad to hear DD is doing well! Thought that must be you! Sunny tuber?! Thanks, she is loving her life but doesn't want to stay in the UK when she's finished (so far). She's feeling the cold, but doesn't mind but for the fact the heating in her accommodation is timed with nothing to do with the actual outdoor temperature!

Funny - my husband is in London for a couple of days, and the weather seems almost comparable! If I venture out today I will definitely be wearing a jumper. Come on, Mrs B, it's 9 degrees C and cloudy in Exeter at the moment, I think it may be even cooler in London! Though I agree, it has been chilly here today, there's no real comparison! I've probably mentioned before my laughing at my m-i-l shivering in Athens and complaining of the cold at 18 deg C, whilst it was -2 deg C in Geneva :) Since living in Dubai, I understand her so much better :)

Thanks for all the comments so far. It is a really difficult decision for us.... We have some time to plan ahead. We will either move in Year 6 or will stay here until school finishes. I wouldn't move her in middle of secondary. Keeping an open mind for now..... :) One thing to take into account is that things change very rapidly here and you may not be guaranteed that you are able to stay here till school finishes. Obviously, I don't know your circumstances, but we have all heard stories of people having been suddenly "let go" from one day to the next, here. I'm so sorry, I don't mean to be pessimistic, but unless you run your own successful company, I wouldn't be so sure it is a certainty you'll be able to stay all that time.

Obviously not everyone gets in because they're paying full fees, the grades have to be good too but if a child in the UK has equivalent grades the place will be offered to a full fee paying student. Simples, I remember your DD being quite ill during her IGCSEs and remember you said she only got 1 IGCSE in English, how did she pull it out of the bag for IB/A levels? She only took the one IGCSE, as you say, in English, when she was 14, in Switzerland. Then she went into the Swiss system but after a year we brought her here, much to her disgust. She would have had to repeat a year to do IGCSE's and 'A' Levels, so she went straight into the IB system here and got good enough grades to get into her first choice uni to study the subjects she wanted. You're right, she had a very bad beginning when she changed schools here and went into the Sixth Form, as she was rushed into hospital on the first Friday of term and had to have some bits removed, including an ovarian cyst the size of a melon, and it took quite a while for her to recover from the op as she insisted on going back to school too soon. She was sick off and on all the time she was in Dubai. All well now, thank goodness :)

well if children who pay foreign fees get in with lower A level results, which was what ladymary was saying, and your child isn't paying foreign fees, maybe she had to get the higher A level results expected of a home student? I just wasn't sure what rule you were saying she is an exception to? Oh, yes, I see now! Yes, I meant exception to ladymary's rule that international students get in with lower grades! We think our daughter benefited from applying after she had her IB grades and because she was having a very active gap year, which she wrote about in her personal statement, which was a bit different from the usual, apparently. Edinburgh was the only university which rejected her (after having assessed her as an international student). (either way, congratulations to your DD) Thank you, we're very proud and she seems to be doing reasonably well - she's certainly thriving on city campus student life, as opposed to when she was at school here, when she was quite miserable :( edited by simpleasabc on 01/12/2014

My own child spent her last three years of schooling in Dubai, and is now at a Russell Group University, where we are paying Home/EU tuition fees. Do you think she is merely the exception which proves the rule? If she's a home student (for fees purposes) perhaps she got in the 'hard' way :) Sorry, I'm obviously being thick here, I don't understand what you mean?

Its also much easier to get offers from RG unis from abroad. edited by ladymary on 01/12/2014 Is that so? For what reason do you think that is? Children paying full fees for Uni have been accepted with lower grades than children from the UK with higher grades. Bit of a sweeping generalisation, perhaps. Dont you think this should be taken into consideration when moving abroad? I would not consider applying for home status when its a blatant lie. In my opinion its just as bad as a benefits cheat. It is the universities who decide, not you. Some of them send you financial status forms to complete before offering a place and some don't. If they see fit to grant you home status when you have completed the forms truthfully, why on earth would you reject it?

Hope all goes well, Angela :) It's a stressful time for both parents and children. Oh, something else I've learned - some UK universities will offer places on the basis of the student being "international" but won't offer the same student a place on the same course if they apply for "Home/EU" status.

I have no idea how it works. UK universities each seem to have completely different criteria, though they are all supposed to conform to the same rules. It seems almost random, from what we understand! When she was applying via UCAS, my daughter was assessed automatically as an international student by one university; as an international student by another, after we filled in a form; not assessed by a third, though offered a place; and given home status after we filled in a financial assessment form, by a fourth, which she now attends. However, she has just been turned down for a tuition fees loan by the student loan company, because we have no proof of residential ties to the UK/Switzerland in the three years prior to her having started at university. This is fair enough, as though we do own property there, we rent it out and she has not lived there during that time. There was no point applying for a maintenance loan because our income is above the threshold required. We are grateful we do not have to pay international fees, anyway. If you maintain a residence in the UK whilst you are living abroad and can give proof of such with utility bills and mortgage statements, as well as proof that it is a temporary assignment and you intend to return to the UK at the end of the assignment, I think it is more likely that your child will be granted home status and be able to get a tuition fees loan. If you do send your child to boarding school in England, you would need to give her/your residential address as an English one (not the school) when filling in the UCAS form, I guess. Good luck, it is all down to chance, I think!

Strictly speaking, it is illegal for anyone to offer their services for payment to anyone except the person/company who sponsors them, unless they have a self-employed licence and company premises, I believe. Of course, teenagers do often babysit for their neighbours. I wonder if a way round it is for the neighbour to offer the babysitter a gift voucher for a mall or shop of their or their parents' choice, whereby the parent could then give their offspring cash in exchange for the gift-voucher?

A favourite in our house is to freshly fry pancetta cubes, freshly brown pine nuts (both in oil-free non-stick frying pans) and add them to the washed spinach leaves. You toss the lot in a vinaigrette made of salt and pepper, Velours Balsamique (available on the vinegar shelves at Spinneys, balsamic glaze in England) mixed with some apple vinegar and olive oil, both added to taste. And voila, le Bob est le frere de votre mere. Takes 5 minutes max. edited by simpleasabc on 24/11/2014

It is not legal. It happens a lot, but it's under the radar. Even tutors who come to your home are doing something illegal and so are you by paying them, unless they are self-employed and associated with a legitimate tutoring company in somewhere like Knowledge Village - and even then, I'm not certain it's legitimate for them to come to work in your home.

The point about pure vanilla extract is that it is made with alcohol, so anything you buy here, unless you get it from a place where you need an alcohol licence, isn't the real McCoy. I believe there is a little place in Umm Al Quwain where you can buy it, along with real wine vinegar.

The first thing you need to do before you move into a villa is make sure the landlord/agent has got a pest control company in to do a thorough sweep of the empty place, inside and out. They stick brown gummy stuff in places, particularly in the kitchen, and this gets rid of cockroaches, which are the main "bugs" you are likely to get. They say you should get pest control in every three months, but ours has lasted for two years. The pests don't go immediately, it can take a couple of weeks before they all disappear, if there is an infestation. Oddly, the worst place in our house was the hinge part of the dishwasher door, where they laid eggs because of the wet and warm environment, I think! Now we take special care to make sure that hinge is always cleaned out, we haven't seen any for a couple of years, as I said! Good luck, our little geckos are lovely and eat other bugs!

TimTam, if you haven't already, check things out here:http://www.ibo.org/ibcc/ - for the Certificate and here for the Diploma: http://www.ibo.org/diploma/ Have a look at the IB school your DS would be going to from the IBorg site, as well. My child changed systems a year earlier than your DS and successfully completed the IB Diploma with only 1 IGCSE (in English) to her name. She's been successful in her applications to UK unis in the subjects she wants to study and after a gap year, is starting a degree course in September. As someone wise wrote below, every child is different and what works for one teenager may not work for another, even amongst siblings. I agree that "if we don't know where you are, we can't help you out", combined with an in-depth explanation of the consequences here, not just for the teen, but for the entire family, if anything goes wrong, is a good way to go about things. Also, for the girls, they need to understand that rape is a very real possibility for unaccompanied girls out late at night here and that they would likely not be seen as the victim if they were to raise a complaint with the police here. edited by simpleasabc on 16/06/2014

It will be fine! A lot of "international" children go from the UK Curriculum to the IB one after GCSE's. If the IB Diploma workload is too heavy for your son (depending on how academic he is), IB schools now also offer the Certificate, which is less demanding but is still recognized for university entrance purposes in the UK, certainly. If you are from Australia, as I surmise from your user-name, the IB Diploma is extremely well-regarded and recognised for entry into Australian universities. The transition at that stage is not too difficult at all, although the children need to have an independent work ethic and be self-motivated to really benefit from the IB methods of teaching, in my experience. Good luck! edited by simpleasabc on 15/06/2014

We had a cockroach problem a couple of years ago but got the exterminators in and though they said they should come back every three months, I haven't bothered and we've stayed cockroach free since. I remember, they took a surprisingly long time to disappear completely, at least a fortnight, I think. We also had the outside of the house sprayed against them. One thing, clean out the hinge in the door of your dishwasher if you can as that is where they like to lay eggs.

I've three opened but barely used bottles here if you'd like one. If you are afraid of accepting gifts of open bottles of liquids from a strange Expat W*tch, then I have a full sealed one with a use-by date of April 2016, to which you are very welcome. I think I've also got some vanilla bean paste which I am never going to use. Put up your email address if you want any of this. edited by simpleasabc on 27/04/2014 Thank you so much for the offer! I've just made an amazing vanilla chocolate cake using vanilla pods for the first time ever and was so happy with the natural flavours...soak it in alcohol to get more value out of them as they are rather pricey...I just scraped it into my cake mix from the pod itself :-) Yumm. Recipe, please? Sounds amazing! As long as there is no secret ingredient of mayonnaise, as well!
