Just curious, if she *hadn't* asked for a gratuity, would you have given her a present of money on her departure?

Lime tree cafe They don't serve p!g I thought they did! Have been many times, and heard friends ordering bacon. I might be mistaken. Probably 'beef' or 'turkey' bacon, which is just not the same. A place where you can buy a proper BLT with real bacon on toasted brown.. Ditto Club Sandwich. Drooling now..

Oh My.. I am terrified too and have not even got my license as a result. I keep thinking I should and then chicken out!!!! If you learn to drive here and then get experience on Dubai roads, I think you will be able to successfully negotiate the worst roads anywhere else in the world (apart from Delhi and Cairo, so my husband tells me). :D

The roads here are very chaotic, but on the up side, the drivers are very forgiving. If you make a stupid mistake or late decision, they don't bat an eyelid because it's completely normal here. I found learning to drive in the UK was really intimidating; people expected you to be perfect from the outset. Finally, keep your left foot AWAY FROM THE PEDALS! :) Some people do still drive manuals here :D True, but not the OP. Sorry, yes, of course, she specified she was driving an automatic for the first time. OP, that is the easy peasy part!

As landlords, we've had tenants default on us both in London and Athens, so we've been glad of the security deposit to make good the mess made in our properties. We had to get the police in to remove a tenant who hadn't paid his rent for a year, after filing a court case which cost us a fortune, so I'm in some sympathy about the LL keeping a security deposit in certain cases. Not that I'm suggesting any of the lovely ExpatWomen would ever behave so outrageously, of course :D edited by simpleasabc on 07/05/2013

You're lucky to get a current recommendation like that one from Plum as it's sometimes very difficult to find the right person for your child here, but this lady sounds great. You might just want to contact her yourself to ask what you've asked us?

I hate to sound defeatist about this, but I think all new tenants here should be resigned to the fact they are not going to get their deposit back in full, if at all, and put the lost deposit into their calculation of their rental budget. Then, if anything is returned on their vacating a premises, it should be considered a bonus, like winning the lottery :D edited by simpleasabc on 07/05/2013

One thing which stopped me from getting quite as lost as before was when I realized that Sharjah was north, Abu Dhabi south, Jumeirah (and the sea) west and Meydan, Arabian Ranches and Nad al Sheba to the west when you're on the SZR. I knew I needed to go in the Abu Dhabi direction if I wanted to go home and which exit I needed to take to get home from the SZR. I still get very lost, particularly if the GPS and the Trade Centre roundabout are involved, but at least I'm confident I can find my way home. The other thing which makes me less anxious is ensuring I have at least half a tank of petrol in the car, which gives me sufficient leeway to get lost without panicking about running out of petrol.. Good luck, I hate driving anywhere, so here is a particular pain for me, but needs must, so I do it - if I hadn't been thrown in at the deep end in our first week, I doubt I would be driving here now, though..

It is my understanding (but I am no authority) that he must give you 365 days' notice from when your contract is due to be renewed in July 2013. I think he's making it up as he goes along. edited by simpleasabc on 06/05/2013

Someone put up a link to the latest amendments to the law yesterday, I think. Hang on, does this link help? http://www.dubailand.gov.ae/english/Tashjee/RulesandRegulations/Law%2033.pdf I read that as saying the landlord must give 12 months' notice of eviction at the end of the current term of the contract.

Poor little thing. Perhaps keep an eye on it and see if she confides in you and asks for help if it goes on? If it carries on longer than you like, I would definitely get help - there are definitely techniques you can be taught to lessen it, if not get rid of it completely. This site suggests the earlier you get therapy the better, though: http://www.stammering.org/generalinfo.html Good luck, I feel for you, but don't have any good suggestions as to what to do. My own daughter has a "stork mark" in the middle of her forehead which is accentuated at some times more than others. My way of not drawing attention to it was to make sure that she had a fringe covering it all the time, without saying a word about it to her so as not to embarrass her - until the day she decided she no longer wanted a fringe and declared she wasn't bothered at all by the stork mark, which to me, was an eyesore on my otherwise perfect daughter! She still keeps her hair away from her forehead and the stork mark is rarely visible and she is not conscious of it. Each child is different..

I've no idea, I'm afraid. Varies tremendously from week to week and depends on who's around at meal times, so I buy daily according to husbad's work and dorter's social commitments, both of which change from minute to minute.

There used to be psychologists for teenagers at Dubai London Clinic, but they are no longer there and the DLC suggests the Dubai Community Health Center, I think, but they only seem to look after adults. I'm sorry not to be more help, the person I'm looking for myself has gone off the radar.

i mean after just a month in the diet,im starting to realize how much food im consuming before and how unhealthy i was eating.diets i believe are there just to kickstart us and to motivate us, [b'>but as my friend always says---theres really only one diet that works--discipline!![/b'> Unfortunately for me, your friend is quite right! Sorry, I didn't say congratulations on all that weight lost, and for sticking to it. Having looked at the web-site, I think it seems to be a very, very, low carb diet, which is what the one that worked for me was, too, but I love starchy foods (oh, all right, and every other food under the sun!) and that's why I found it such a struggle to follow that particular diet :(

I'm sorry, we just pottered up to have a look at Cape Cod, didn't stay there at all. The whole area is very pictureskew, particularly during the autumn leaf season. Lovely clapboard houses, beautiful sea, places like Mystic where you can get pizza.. It's not called "New England" for nothing, lovely and green and quite rainy, depending on the season, of course! Oh, bringing back lovely memories! Not a lot of help to you, though..

I've just quoogled it and it's one of those diets based on blood groups, apparently. I didn't think they worked. Do you have huge amounts of weight to lose bblue? 8.8 kgs is excellent, but hard to do. When I was following a low GI diet from a Swiss nutritionist, I had a great deal to lose (even more now) and I lost 7kg in a month. I ate very, very little and was bored out of my tiny mind with it and hated it, it was a huge struggle to follow, so when real life in the form of having to look after a demented mother intervened, I went back to my old ways and immediately put the 7k and more back on.. No I weigh 62kg and happy with my weight but thinking of my DH who weighs nearly 100kg and been on the Dkan diet for nearly a year - stuck to it rigidly but only lost 15kg in all that time. Will look it up. Thanks So sorry, bblue, for some reason I thought you were the OP, I meant to ask Ladybanker how much she had to lose. How embarrassing :( BBlue, has your DH been seen by a doctor recently? I'm wondering if he might have an underactive thyroid or some other underlying condition to do with his metabolism? If he's been following the Dukan rigidly, he should have lost more than 15kg over a year, from what I understand.

I can only suggest you try another office, another day, you might get lucky? I can't find any reference to this rule change online, it still says everywhere I've looked that the same rules apply to parents-in-law as to parents. Otherwise, you'll just have to do visa runs with your mother until you are able to sponsor her yourself :(

If you're a really nervous flier it's a great idea to let the flight attendants know. They can reassure you, explain calmly and rationally what's going on and distract you. Sometimes they will sit with a nervous passenger during take off and landing and they will be really sympathetic. It's not in their interest to have you freak out mid flight and try and get out or whatever! [b'>Also, always sit as far forward as you possibly can, because the turbulence is always worst at the back. That's why first class is where it is.[/b'> No.

Sorry to protract this thread but no one seems to have mentioned that sleeping with a baby 1mth - 1yr old in one's own bed is considered dangerous - is this no longer theory? TDB mentions they do this in her first post - which I cannot retrieve. You will find a lot of conflicting advice on this topic. One thing is for sure. No one under the influence of any drugs or alcohol should be co-sleeping. edited by AnonDubai on 06/05/2013 You're spot on there, AnonDubai, but I think it is considered safe to sleep with your baby in your bed if neither of you is under the influence of substances which might cause you to roll over and smother your baby without realising what was happening, or kick the baby out of bed accidentally.. As you say, advice on this subject is conflicting, who knows what the latest research says.. edited by simpleasabc on 06/05/2013

From my understanding, if the word ends in s and is only one syllable, the plural is like this: Jones's... BUT the teachers' food [b'>Referring to decades, there is no apostrophe. For example, the 80s[/b'>.... That's debatable, actually, Anon, and a matter of style of the type I presume Meagle was referring to. Ditto "Jones's".

Generally, the apostrophe in English as two purposes: 1. Possession Eg: John's car (the car belonging to John), The Jones' car (the car belonging to the Jones family), the children's toys, (the toys belonging to the children), the girls' toys (the toys belonging to the girls) 2. Contraction E.g: cannot - can't, who is - who's, will not - won't Which, by implication, means NEVER use an apostrophe before an s to indicate a plural :D

In answer to the original question, when ours was a babe-in-arms, she came with us everywhere we went (this is the Greek way, apparently). It was either that or we wouldn't go out as we didn't have baby-sitters we trusted till she was older. So most nights were date nights, with a plus one! I don't recommend it - we were on Mykonos when she was 6 months old and out with all our friends until early in the morning. The theory was that if she was tired, she would sleep in the push-chair. My Aunt Fanny! As long as there was activity around her, she was wide-eyed and laughing, and she and we are still suffering from this approach - she has terrible insomnia and awful sleep patterns aged 18, and has done since she was a baby. I blame the parents :( She bonded well with her father, though!
