It's dry from tomorrow sunset to sunset on Monday, I think. As Yorky says, those are all good places - one you don't list, which I've not been to but have heard good things about, is Ruth's Chris at the Marina Address. Enjoy, wherever you land up and congratulations to your son!

Our doorbell rang last night at about 9.15pm and it was the NKD Pizza delivery man who had come to the wrong house! We sent him off to No 31 and then promptly ordered from Sandella's!

I know that people can adopt children from Ethiopia to here, perhaps you could ask an adoption group here how it works? There are a couple of very active and helpful ones, I think. I'm sure there would be someone to advise you, I'll see if I can get a contact for you. I believe that adoption is not an option in the local ethos, though, so you're probably going to have to be creative. You might get some ideas from this article: http://www.timeoutdubai.com/community/features/15174-how-to-adopt-in-dubai#.Uleba3dmM1I edited by simpleasabc on 11/10/2013

Nath, it's not clear to me when you received your notice from the landlord - you do know he has to give you 12 months' notice from the end of your current contract, and give you his reason for giving you this notice? To the best of my knowledge, these are the laws which apply: www.dubailand.gov.ae/english/Tashjee/RulesandRegulations/Law%2026.pdf www.dubailand.gov.ae/english/Tashjee/RulesandRegulations/Law%2033.pdf Hope the links work! The 1st link is out of date from 2007 as it states the rent cannot be increased within 2 years which is now incorrect due to the rent calculator The second one is amendments to the first one.

Good point SImpleas. Any idea what sort of child the schools may not suit, or may suit less well? Really sorry, but no idea. I am only speaking from hearsay, not my own personal experience. These things are so difficult to judge, when we only want to do the best for our children. I'm sorry, I can't advise you, though I think, given the nature of Dubai, if I were you, I would stick to the best at present for my child as the future is so unpredictable for so many of us. You don't necessarily know you'll still be in Dubai when Year 7 comes. I would also bear in mind what a good teacher friend of mine in Switzerland used to say - there is only a necessity for "real" education for 14 or 15 year olds, at the stage of preparation for the first external exams at age 16 in the BC. Before that, children will thrive wherever they are and will learn from all experiences, it doesn't matter if they miss formal school as long as they are learning from life. I know that is not a fashionable point of view here and rigid structures are viewed as the best, but hey, I think Montessori education should be available till age 18!

Go with your gut and bear in mind that despite their reputations, DESS and DESC don't necessarily suit *all* the children whose parents send them there for reasons of supposed merit. edited by simpleasabc on 06/10/2013

Tell the agent he should worry about the fact he is letting down you, the client who will be paying him his commission for typing up the contract, and is not coming up with suitable properties for you, rather than looking stupid in front of the LL who won't be paying him anything and is expecting too much for a poor property.

Somebody on this forum suggested a registered Apple support shop in Knowledge Village. I took a broken MacBook Pro there and I found them very professional and it was repaired, with a new screen installed, amongst other things, within a day. At a price, of course, but pay peanuts, get monkeys. Or something. It is called Smart and is in the row of shops opposite Cordoba Residence in Knowledge Village, at the end nearest Zayed University. Thoroughly recommend the service. I don't know whether they are as good for iPads, though.

Switzerland and France are both countries where people expect to rent their home all their lives, not buy it. However, in both Switzerland and France, tenants can reasonably expect to stay in the same home, if they choose not to move, as long as they pay their rent on time and do not damage the premises. There is none of this "you've got to pay an outrageous rent hike after two years or move out" mentality that you get here. But do you need to give a year's notice to get someone out of your house? Do you have to give a reason? Goodness me, yes! The only way you can give good tenants notice is if you have proof that you and your family have nowhere else to go and want to move in. And if you sell the property, the tenants have first refusal on the purchase and if they don't buy, I think they then remain as sitting tenants and I'm not even sure they can be thrown out by the new owner at all. (Coincidentally, that happened to us at a time we were in a situation where we were able to buy the place we were renting, so I don't remember the fine details.) Friends of ours took it to the rent tribunal as they suspected their landlord was lying about needing to move in. They got themselves an extra year, at least.

If income tax is imposed, a lot of workers at a different level will be lost to Dubai. As you well know, the savings they can make by not paying income tax are the only reason many people stay here.

We have put our paperwork in front of the rent committee and they said absolutely that since the LL did NOT give a reason and [b'>is refusing to give a reason[/b'> the 12 months notice we were given is invalid even though he did it by registered post. Looks like we are staying another year. (yes, if you check previous posts I said his request to evict was by email, but it turns out DH had received a letter - and can you believe - forgotten!) I don't understand this. But if it means you get to stay an extra 12 months, it's all to the good for you. If the LL declines to give a reason for the next 12 months, do you get to stay another 12 months again, then? Or do you now have a new LL who is having to give you 12 months' notice?

You could still get a "small" unlandscaped brand new build in Jumeirah Park for that, I think. The environment is a little unfinished, but it might be worth it, the houses are good inside. I haven't looked at "The Villa" recently, but possibly also there? Don't forget to take off about AED10,000 from the rent to account for the agent's commission and remember you will also have to pay a deposit. Dubizzle is probably the best place for you to start: http://dubai.dubizzle.com/property-for-rent/residential/villahouse/?site=2&s=RP&rc=1743&c1=23&price__gte=200%2C000&price__lte=210%2C000&bedrooms__gte=4&bedrooms__lte=4&places__id__in=&places__id__in=76%2C109%2C&keywords=&is_basic_search_widget=0&is_search=1&added__gte=&company_item_id=&furnished=&listed_by=&size__gte=&size__lte=&bathrooms__gte=&bathrooms__lte=

Perhaps I missed it but from what I've read on this thread no one has mentioned the obvious - setting an example to our children. Surely the most important thing is not what their parents or teachers think, but what we are teaching our young men and women, particularly the girls, about what is and isn't appropriate in terms of dress, what will and won't garner respect and how we are viewed (especially considering cultural sensibilities etc)? Before I get jumped on, yes the naked human body is a beautiful thing and our children should learn that, but they also need to understand time and place etc etc. I wouldn't wear a bikini in a government office, or an Abaya to play volleyball in. On a slightly different note, I make it a rule never to leave the house in something that I would be embarrassed to be wearing if I had a car crash and had to wait by the side of the road for the police in. My personal dress barometer if you will! I agree in general, but worry about a society where "particularly the girls" need to be taught how to behave. Apparently, boys lack the ?what? to take responsibility for their own actions when in mixed company. Why can boys/men not be held responsible for their own actions when in the company of women, who, by dint of their very existence, it seems, "ask for it"?

There was a Dad at my children`s school in Dubai who came to pick up his children wearing just a towel, no shoes, no pants..... only a towel. It was horrible as the towel was very thin ewww Baron von Münchhausen? LOL along with lots of 'stories' on here Err no, Hopefully a DBS parent will come along to verify. Well at least it would avert eyes away from bare midriffs etc but still ewww I don`t see why people have to busy themselves with what other people wear, how they act etc. How many times has this subject been done to death on here. No everyone wants to look like they're a middle aged frump in long skirts !! Where on earth do you think you live? Seriously? Are you really as ignorant of the environment you live in as you read? Or are you just joking? Or you just don't live in Dubai any more? edited by simpleasabc on 25/09/2013

Just one other thing which occurs to me, TDB - I think you and your husband are going to have to accept that at least until your children turn teenagers, or go away for sleepovers, you cannot expect to have a lie-in beyond 5am. If you're very lucky, they'll sleep till 6am. They are children, they wake up early and wake up their parents because they want attention of one kind or another. Your days of sleeping in till 8, 9, or 10 am are gone for the duration. So don't even attempt to go there, cos it ain't gonna happen! edited by simpleasabc on 25/09/2013 edited by simpleasabc on 25/09/2013

I can't bear the thought that my baby will not bother crying because he knows I won't come. I'm not ready for him to give up on me just yet ;) This is not what CIO is about. It's about teaching baby to soothe themselves back to sleep when they awake during the night and to realize that night times are for sleeping and for doing so in their own crib/bed. I did CIO with checks from both my kids and I assure you that neither of them have given up on me. In fact, quite the opposite. They both sleep very well and I'm the first one they look to and come to if and when they need comfort or their needs addressed. true true. CIO does not mean leave the baby to cry alone. Does it stand for "Crying it Out"? Or what?

I agree entirely. They obviously have no self respect and [b'>I doubt the school Mums at home would dress that way on the school run even in Summertime![/b'> Really? You are talking about the country where on a sudden hot sunny day people will go into a London park in their lunch break and strip off to their undies with no compunction. That is London, however I am not from there so thankfully not subjected to this :-) I am talking about the summer of 1976, though, I would imagine such behaviour was to be found all over the UK that year! http://www.buzzfeed.com/robinedds/18-photos-of-the-uk-heatwave-of-1976 - I think Pic no 7 was probably taken at Henley Regatta! There is quite a debate going on in the UK at the moment about the niqab (face veil) with some pressure to ban it completely or just in public buildings (I think some would like to ban the hijab too). I have been very vocal on Twitter about the state having no role in defining what women should wear and that includes the niqab. Using the same logic I don't think schools should be doing so either. Obviously if I had my way I would totally mandate age / size appropriate clothing at all times. Come to our school, one afternoon, coffee on me and you will completely change your mind. You will see things you have yet to see! Shortest daisy dukes with the highest heels. Yoga tights with tops showing the midriff. Tube tops with breasts about to fall out. Blouses with V backs all the way down to the waist with the bra in full view. I could go on!! If they don't regulate it, there is no telling how some parents will dress for school. It doesn't matter if it is an Islamic country or not, it is a school and such attire is just not appropriate. I agree entirely. They obviously have no self respect and [b'>I doubt the school Mums at home would dress that way on the school run even in Summertime![/b'> Really? I remember people being obsessed with babies sleeping through the night when they were extremely young. I fed on demand, including during the night, until I had to stop breastfeeding when my daughter was 11 months old. After that, if she happened to wake in the night, she was given a bottle and had her nappy changed if necessary. We were lucky in that, although our daughter woke us up when she needed the bathroom (and that went on till she was at least 4!), when she cried during the night, it was only if there was something wrong. At 5am I would first be checking my baby didn't need a nappy change or wasn't hungry, rather than leaving her to cry it out (if that's what CIO means).

Ditto Simpleasabc. To me there is no rape reference in Thicke's song. It sounds like something someone would say to a lover in private. Same as Talk dirty to me, Jason Derulo, same as Gorilla, Bruno Mars- private conversation between lovers during s*x. Whether it should be sung about or not, should be the debate. Exactly, Chocobella. If people must sing about it, then I think that kind of song should not be broadcast on a radio station which has a large audience of children until after a "watershed" time of night. More difficult to monitor the videos available to children, of course. I'd never heard of this particular song till I saw this thread and even now, I've only read the lyrics, not listened to the song or watched the video. Just in case you weren't posting tongue in cheek, Madge Gustard, Middlesex University has been here a long time. I think people have to use variations of the word "sox" on EW because of censorship by the Admin.

Do NOT send a follow-up email after a fruitless telcon with a dissatisfied customer asking how the telcon was for the customer. DO act immediately on a telephone or face-to-face complaint, and if you are a salesperson answering an enquiry, do get back to your potential customer within the same day if you say you will and anyhow don't leave days between the first query and your response.

It's not the word "approvals" which is wrong, it's the word "their" in the first place, so as Doubting Thomas says, the Committee is singular so it should be "its approval".

I was living in Taiwan at the time and because of the time difference, I did not see anything live. I got woken up at 4 am by a frantic phone call from my sister in the USA. She said that they had all been evacuated from work because the country was under attack and no one had any idea when it would stop. The Taiwanese seemed to be totally oblivious to what happened and when I went to work on the 12th, no one even mentioned it! Bizarre! Why? For some people, the USA is not the centre of the universe.

How come you all don't vaccinate your children against chicken pox? It's easy and chicken pox is horrible! How do you know she didn't?? The vaccination isn't 100%, they can still contract it. When my daughter was of an age to be vaccinated against chickenpox, the paediatricians in Geneva advised against it as they said the vaccine was almost completely ineffective and it wasn't worth it.

It's because so many people don't know their rights, that some LL's think they can bully people. Until more people start fighting back, they just keep getting away with it. The authorities really need to look at this whole situation before it gets out of hand again. [b'>There should be caps on how much properties can be rented for.[/b'> Things can't just keep going up expanentially. Well, the RERA calculator fulfills that criterion to some extent. There are some good ideas about how to stop landlords randomly raising rents at the start of each new contract. I particularly like the thought of making landlords rather than tenants pay the estate agents' commissions, but how on earth would you get that implemented? It's to the benefit of landlords and agents alike to maintain the status quo. Tenants' rights come a poor third in this city.

You can always "fight" at the Committee, but unfortunately if you get evicted it simply becomes a case of moving a year later instead of in 2-3 months time Gives you breathing space and time to research and get your ducks in a row, though.

Our LL asked for AED20,000 increase within last 3 months of renewal too....it seems to be a pattern and I think they do it because most actually do get away with it as they know people just dont like to move in Dubai. Awful ethics. But if the actual price increase is not within RERA parameters, you can fight the landlord, surely? And you can probably fight it on the basis of insufficient notice, too, from what I've read here?
