I'm going to be hammered for saying this, but there are nannies such as Norland Nannies, who are properly trained as nannies, with diplomas from accredited colleges and who cost their weight in gold and then there are nannies who are housemaids by another name, whose only qualification to be called nannies is that they've had children they've left at home in the care of other people. I think the ones you are talking about may well be the latter..

We have landlords' insurance (Paragon Ltd) to cover building, fixtures & fittings, carpets, etc and then it is up to the tenants to take out their own contents insurance. Perhaps you should have a formal tenancy agreement with your son, with [b'>a peppercorn rent[/b'> to formalise your position as landlord and then he can take out contents insurance in his own name. Thank you for that lovely use of English, long time since I'd heard that expression :)

Union National Bank Ladies' Account. http://www.unb.co.ae/english/inner.aspx?p=2&mid=339 You only need a small amount to open it, you need only keep a bare minimum in it (either AED50 or AED100, I can't remember), you just need your passport and proof of residence and address to open it and it takes about 20 minutes to open it. No NOC necessary from sponsor. I think you only get a hole in the wall card, not a debit or credit card, for the account, though (I've not investigated further as I prefer not to have another cc). If you withdraw money from any other bank's ATM, it costs you AED 25 for the transaction (I don't know how prevalent this is here, I'm not used to this kind of charge being levied in other countries).

I thought you could either drive with your international licence and a visit visa, or with the UAE licence and the residence permit? (In other words, you need to get your UAE licence before you can drive here once you have your residence permit.)

If you manage to find something affordable in Jumeirah Village without pool access (which, going by what's on this site, you should be able to do: http://www.justrentals.com/dubai-rent/jumeirah-village-property-for-rent.html#3%20bed%20Jumeirah%20Village%20%20Long-term%20rentals ), you could join the Lakes club using the difference :) We found the big problem moving here were all the original set up costs, which we are still paying off - but that was our own fault for buying things which we hadn't budgeted for :(

Do you not have to go for a medical in Dubai before the residence visa is issued? So do me and the kids enter Dubai on a visit visa first of all? Yes, you do, it's perfectly usual. The process can take quite a long time, though as you have to wait for your husband's (= your sponsor's) residence visa to come through first, after he has his work permit and only then can you and the family apply for a residence permit under his sponsorship. As I said elsewhere, only move here now if the alternative is hopeless. What field do you want to find a job in? Remember if you do work full-time, you will have to pay for child care after school as your hours will probably not overlap with school hours. Finding a part-time job here is difficult. I'm honestly not trying to put you off but from what you've said, it seems you have a really tight budget and one thing you don't want to do in Dubai is land up in debt with loans from the bank to pay off.

Uck. We not getting much more than that and need to do schools for two kids,,flights , cars etc. Looked at a 2 bed place in springs which was small but guess we can squeeze in z Think I need to find a job quickly lol. Only come if there is no feasible alternative at home. With 4 of you you'll struggle on 30,000 a month for absolutely everything - unless your accommodation will be provided?

I'm not sure how accessible they are to DBS, I think they are a few construction sites away from the Springs area, though I could be wrong, given my geographical abilities. I have a feeling they are nearer to the Green Community. If you are thinking of JVC, you might also consider Victory Heights, but again, they are a pain to get in and out of now the Al Khail roundabout has been closed, I think, though I could be wrong. It might take a long time to get to DBS. Don't forget one-off costs such as commission to the real estate agent which you as tenant have to pay - I can't remember if it's 5 or 10 % of the rental cost. Have you seen these threads? I also went to KV last week and got processed. When I got out I recieved a text saying I had an appointment on 30th May at Dubai - Al Karama (Emirates Post) Service Point. I called EIDA as I requested the card to be delivered but she said they couldnt deliver I had to collect?! I am still confused as I know people who have had it delivered to them. Anyone else had this problem or an appointment to collect the card at a post office? Apparently, at the beginning of the issuing of EID cards, they would courier them to people but I believe the system has changed and you now have to go and collect it at whichever PO they tell you to go to. It's been like that for at least a year, as we got ours done last March and had to go to Deira PO to collect the cards. I believe they keep them for a month and if you don't collect them, I think they get dumped and you have to start the whole process again, but I could be wrong.

I have a fantastic time with my family in the UK whenever I go back. Every single close rellie (aunts, cousins, gran etc) invites me over for a massive lunch/dinner and usually gives me presents as well. Mum makes all my favourite meals, loads of people come over to see me and I'm generally treated like a celeb. Friends are becoming busier as we're all older now with hubbies and kids but there'll always be a couple of nights out with the girls as well. :) So I love going back! Wow, that's really nice, DP. We have a celebrity in our midst ;)

I'm not going into it here, but my mother-in-law treated my husband like a cash cow ( bull?) for the last 18 years of her life and in the last couple of years, only ever contacted us to demand money. Most demoralising. I still miss her as I think about the good times we had when my father-in-law was still alive, but honestly, it's not pleasant at all to be treated as a money machine.

Thanks for posting. I might pop along and try to hurry ours up. DH has an appointment in Oct and others are in May, June and Sept, all in different far flung offices of the Emirate!. You can just ring them up and say the dates don't suit and that all 3 of you want to go to the same place at the same time. Alternatively, you could go to Knowledge Village without an appointment and get it done on the spot :)

I'm afraid I can't advise on schools, but for your present dilemma, I would suggest telling the taxi driver what you're doing and asking him to take you to Springs 7 to find the house you've been told about and then to drive around after that, stopping at the houses with to rent signs outside them. Try the estate agent's number and if you don't get a reply, knock at the door to see if anyone's in and ask if you can visit, or failing that, try the door handle and see if you can check the place out. Remember, whenever you go into any of these compounds on a recce, you must have an address to go to. Make it up, but make sure it's not Street 10, Villa 100 as there might not be such a house! I think you are going to have problems with these people from now on and you are going to come out the loser in the end with all the emotional badgering they going to do. Let them have the place but take them up on the offer to move you at no cost to you and get out. You will only fight this again next year and they may not be willing to let you move on their dime. Take a copy of that email to RERA, along with a copy of your current contract, NOW :) From my understanding, he has no right to do this to you under the law and is trying to pressure you to leave with no justification since he doesn't own the property. As that is the case, I would tell him you will only discuss your position with the present owner with whom you have a contract, whether you renew or not is none of his business. Tell him to stop pestering you this way or you will call the police for harrassment.

Barbiedoll, the Sixth Form facilities are excellent and we have been impressed by the teaching staff as well. In typical Dubai fashion, most of my daughter's teachers will be leaving at the end of this academic year (some have been poached by other IB schools here, some are returning home, some are taking better jobs elsewhere and I believe one is going to be involved in training IB teachers in the Middle East) so who knows what next year will bring. We had no option but to put our daughter into the IB system and are very pleased with WIS. This year they are being more selective about who they allow to enter for the actual IB diploma, so presumably their success rate at Diploma level will be better. It was their first year of IB diploma, their actual results did not tally with their predicted results so now they are not putting all candidates in for the IB Diploma, but letting the less academically successful candidates aim for the easier IB Certificate. I really hope they are learning from their mistakes and this year's results will be better. From next year, they will also be offering more vocational courses for the less academic students - HND's, I think. ETA: Success in the IB diploma also depends on huge application, dedication and academic ability from the students themselves. From what I can tell, the IB is far more demanding than A level studies. I know that London's Godolphin & Latymer School (6th best IB results in UK after 2 cohorts) only allows selected students of the highest ability and intelligence to sit the IB Diploma, the others sit A levels, where they also get excellent results. edited by simpleasabc on 18/04/2012 <em>edited by simpleasabc on 18/04/2012</em>

I'm not sure if I'm reading between the lines here, but are you directly asking your husband to look after DD so you can get some me time or "waiting" for him to volunteer? Some guys are very dense and need to be told (my BIL is one of them) "Honey, I'm going to Zumba Saturday morning at x o'clock - DD usually has a snack at x30 and likes to play abcxyz, I should be back at whenever o'clock. Thanks hon" If he says he needs his weekend to relax - tell him he can relax with DD - she loves being with her Dad. I have tried the direct approach and explaining how I feel in general. I'm usually met with the "I work all week" or blank expressions. Well, if he thinks you've not been working yourself all week, it will not be work for him to look after his daughter whilst you have some time to yourself, so that's all right, he can relax with his daughter after his week's work.

The Jebel Ali Resort has sent me a reasonable quotation for dining under the stars and I'm just waiting to see what their menu is like. Shimmers, the One and Only and the Westin also have sent me quotes but Jebel Ali, the one I was thinking of originally, is the most affordable. I would adore to stay the night at the Madinat and have the Shimmers romantic deal but it's just not for our pocket. Thinking about it, we were better off the day we got married than we are now - something wrong, surely!
