Tribune de Geneve online for France Voisine: http://www.tdgimmobilier.ch/?subcats=Y&status=A&pshort=Y&result_ids=pagination_contents&immo_search=Y&pfull=Y&pname=Y&pkeywords=Y&search_performed=Y&category_id=167&ccid=167&c_cid=167&state_code=GEO-FR-CH&q=&no_domain=N&no_domain=Y&sort_by=timestamp&dispatch[categories.view'>=Chercher GHI for Gex: http://pa.ghi.ch/Projet_GHI/PAGE_ListePA/jBwAAIHVJBFrUWVjSURaa1hCGAA In my experience, it's most likely you will have to rely on agents immobiliers, or regies (those are the rental companies in Geneva) in any case, but you might be lucky and find a good private rental or sale. Hang on, there was another site we got tenants from in Geneva, I will try and find it.

Hi, Tariflette! Nice to see you! Have a great holiday! Mmmmm: It used to be that there was a significant difference between the cost of living in "France Voisine" and in Geneva, but after the introduction of the Euro, we noticed it was hardly worth our while going over the border to France to do our household shopping from a price point of view, though I preferred our French butcher's poultry, meat and deli offerings, and couldn't buy self-raising flour in Switzerland, only in France (farine a gateau!). Many people commute from France to Geneva, but that is because of higher salaries on offer in Geneva than in France. It also might be easier from an "officialdom" point of view for EU nationals to live in France rather than having to get the necessary permits to live in Switzerland - I'm afraid I don't know about that, as am now a Swiss citizen! I believe that the cost of renting in France Voisine may now be almost the same as the cost of renting in the Geneva area, but I could be wrong. You would need to try to compare like with like. If you are not a French speaker, I would suggest you check out the AngloInfo classifieds for properties in the Geneva area and in Ain, which is the French department your friends have suggested to you. If you speak French, then you could look at sites like GHI or the immobilier pages of the Tribune de Geneve. Best of luck, if you want links, I can get them for you quite quickly!

Could I suggest to UK nationals that they check The Law Society Register to see which firms here are listed for the field of law they require before going to a company here? I have recently been given the wrong advice about probate document requirements by one of the companies mentioned in this thread, though they were good about remedying it when I had to go back to re-do the documents after I'd spoken to my solicitor in the UK who had made the request in the first place. http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/find-a-solicitor/

If it's any help, your Swiss neighbours are obliged to get a new passport when that happens, and travel with two passports until their residence visa is renewed and put in the new passport.

Those would all be places where someone who was going to work at CERN or the Industrial Parc over the border in France might want to live.. :D I lived on the other side of Geneva, near St Julien-en-Genevois, for a long time. If I were to live on the "CERN" side, in France, I would prefer Divonne, I think. But it depends on what you want, all the places you write about are odd, in that they are sleeper suburbs of Geneva, slightly cheaper to live in than Geneva itself, and full of rabbit hutches/apartment blocks built for the commuters, but they can also be right in the middle of the (very green) countryside, where there are still traditional farmhouses to be rented or bought. It's a long time since I had to worry about creches, but to the best of my knowledge, the French are good about creches and aim to have a space available for every child both of whose parents are working. Divonne is a spa town and a bit more lively and older than the other places, but as I said, it depends what you want. It is also known for its Sunday morning market. If you are from the UK, you might be glad to know about Jim's British mini-market in St. Genis-Pouilly :) I'm sorry, I'm not a huge fan of the area, maybe Tartiflette, who knows and likes it better than I do, will be along to give her opinion shortly. There is someone else here from the Geneva area, too, who may still be posting, whose name I'm sorry, I've forgotten. Is it Derien? Good luck with the move, if it *is* CERN you are going for, you will find lots of ex-pat colleagues and their families and you should be able to make friends quite easily that way.

LL's can only increase if the rent calculator states they are entitled to it. So get her to check on that and then just politely advise the LL that in accordance with UAE law he is not entitled to an increase, if that is the case. No idea what a standard 7 or 10% increase is about I'm afraid... http://www.dubailand.gov.ae/english/eservices/rentalincreasecalculatoren.aspx Not sure it's about percentage increases as such, but percentage difference from the average for similar properties in the same area, IYSWIM. Am not sure if ours is a three or four bedroomed villa - if it is 3, the landlord is entitled, by comparison with similar properties, to raise the rent by 5%; if it is 4, the landlord is entitled, by comparison with similar properties, to raise the rent by 10%.

not open yet, says July but my husband had a nose the other day inside and it is nowhere near finished! they have completely taken every out and are starting again. looking forward to it opening again though :) Thanks for the info - I thought it had gone right downhill in the past year or so - it changed management, once, if not twice, didn't it? We used to enjoy the themed nights when we first came, particularly Thursday evenings, used to be very relaxed and nice to wind down at the end of a hard week of being a housewife/taxi service..

How do you pull up the old thread? I tried "search posts" and nothing came up. I had hoped to print them out also, but never got around to it. My two favourites were the lady looking for a laxative who was told "that's what all the jelly ladies say" when she said that it was not for weight loss, and the lady who mistakenly bought suppositories and was greeted with a shrieking "you need more suppositwees?" when she went back to the pharmacy. Every so often I will think of them and still laugh (as does my husband!). This isn't the original thread, but you'll find the second one on the last/first here, I think: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic145194-overheard-at-mcdonalds-part-ii.aspx?Page=7

Fire the doc and find a new one. This one is providing misinformation. There are a lot of doctors who would say this, though.... That doesn't make it any the less misinformation, just because numerous doctors don't know what they're talking about :)

This is more of a pub B&B than a country hotel, and I'm not sure how good it is now, it has changed hands several times since I stayed there over 20 years ago, but it used to have a very good restaurant and bar food and "Olde Worlde" rooms with four poster beds. It's in a lovely part of the world, with Petworth just down the road, not far from Chichester and the Roman Villa at Bignor: http://www.thecrownchiddingfold.com/specialoffers.html Another place that I can recommend as a "country house" hotel, but rather in Greater London, is the Cannizaro House Hotel in Wimbledon: http://www.cannizarohouse.com/portfolio-type/summer-stay-a-while-breaks/ The food in their restaurant is good, but I prefer here for dinner: http://www.thelawnbistro.co.uk/

Look, I know nothing of this, but if your sons have mentioned nothing about the younger one's "special" friend, I wouldn't start raising problems in their minds. Children are hugely accepting and may realize the friend is different, but this is probably a bigger deal to you than to them. As to your brother-in-law, how does the rest of the family treat him? Perhaps you should take your cue from them? Again, I probably wouldn't mention it unless your children ask about it. If you are afraid they will upset him, just tell them that, as they should with everyone, they must respect his possessions and his "space", or he might get upset.

I've never been, but my husband tells me the Muscat Intercontinental is very good. And he's not a fan of hotels in general, so for him to mention it, it must be good (the only other one he specifically mentioned in his past 5 years of travelling in the Middle East was the Mina A'Salam :D).

I have been looking recently, I can't actually recommend anyone, but perhaps you could choose from here: http://www.lawsociety.org.uk/find-a-solicitor/#formtop The British Consulate has a list here: https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/142675/UAE_Lawyers_Translators.pdf perhaps you could find a company that figures on both lists? I've had prices of AED300 to AED500 quoted to me, for something which would cost me £7.00 in England.

No news, but info - if the baby is born after Queenie's bed-time at 11.00pm, everyone not present at the birth will have to wait till she wakes up tomorrow morning and is informed by the proud father, who has a specially encrypted phone to stop eavesdroppers :) Supposedly, even Charlie won't be informed before his mother hears, but he's probably got a specially encrypted phone, too ;) After the Queen has been informed, the rest of us plebs (and Charlie) will be allowed in on the info :)

What do you want to know? We have two Ford Explorers and use them equally in the City as in the desert. I find the air-con in mine doesn't work very well. I know nothing of anything else, I just drive from a to b (often via Z) and get the petrol tank filled up as necessary.

Quote - The Queen recently overturned a 1917 decree whereby the 'Succession To The Crown Bill' will make the UK’s old fashioned rules are fit for the 21st Century! Should the new heir be a girl under the old bill she would take the title of Lady, now, she will not only be third in line to the throne, nudging Prince Harry down to forth, she will be given the title of Her Royal Highness (HRH). So, how comes, the Duke of York's children are known, since birth, as HRH Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie respectively? They were born some twenty years ago and not as close to inheriting the throne as the new baby will be (if a girl of course). I think it's because they are the Queen's grand-daughters, not her great-grand-daughters?

Legs11, I wanted to thank you for that pointer, I did a search and came up with this thread. I took my daughter's out of warranty broken Macbook Pro in for repair yesterday afternoon, and have got it back today with a new screen, new hard drive, document, picture and music files and most applications rescued and a one year warranty! It is called Smart and is in the row of shops opposite Cordoba Residence in Knowledge Village, at the end nearest Zayed University. Thoroughly recommend the service - not cheap, though. To the lady looking for an ipad 3 screen replacement, I would think Smart would do it quickly, but I think they are an Apple accredited service provider, so would be more expensive than Hotline. (If you are one of the peeps I had lunch with today, oops, you already know this!)

Ironically opposed to most of the views on this thread, most of the pregnant Muslim women that I know and have known fast through Ramadan because they do not see pregnancy as an illness... edited by AnonDubai on 29/06/2013 As with all I know. I don't know if I would have as I get really nervous with utero babies as I get so hungry when I'm pregnant and eat like a machine so I think it is a mental thing more than physical as it is the mental picture I've drawn in my mind of not eating when pregnant, or drinking. Not smoking doesnt bother me so much :-P I will be fasting inshallah this year and am nursing. Are you sure that is a good idea for the health of your child?

The circumstances were completely different, I suppose, but when I worked in the Arabic Section of the BBC as a summer job many, many, years ago, the staff who were fasting kept very quiet about it and non-fasting colleagues were not expected to be discreet about their eating and drinking habits at all. I knew nothing about the Ramadan fast at the time and all these rules were news to me when I arrived here. Interesting information, thank you, ladies. Not that I'll ever need to know about the pregnancy aspect ;)
