I know nothing of these things, but when I have visited Istanbul, the ladies have had their heads covered, and were wearing a long-sleeved coat and trousers. Multi-coloured, not black. Not yet seen a Turkish lady wearing an abaya. Or am I misunderstanding your question - is there a type of abaya known as a Turkish Abaya? I'm genuinely interested. Sorry I can't help you. <em>edited by simpleasabc on 16/10/2011</em>

I think I've seen them in the Spanish place at Al Qasr. If I tried them, they weren't particularly good, or I would have remembered and been able to tell you about them properly. OK, now I'm fed up, I'm racking my brain cell to remember where I've seen them.. Might get back to you, sorry not to be more help.

Derien, really glad to hear the teacher's on top of it and your boy's feeling better already. Interesting stuff about the testosterone surge at 7 years old, too. Thanks, EW, I've learnt something today.

Someone recently told me that they had a two months' notice clause put into their housing contract, so that if their job circumstances changed, they would be able to leave before the year was up. I don't know where that would leave them with the money paid in advance, though.

Or should she get it repaired and deduct money from the tenants deposit? It is their fault for leaving a tap running whilst on holiday. Yes, that's the way to do it. Aren't they expected to leave a place in the condition in which they found it, apart from usual wear and tear, which leaving a shower on over a long period is not?

I'd probably allow about an hour, although it might take you slightly less, depending on traffic. There used to be a minibus that runs from Jumeira Beach Hotel to Bab al Shams, but I don't know if that runs any more. Might be worth checking. It only takes us 45 mins from our end of town (Meadows), easy journey. Oh, but that was before they shut the Al Khail roundabout.. Shouldn't think the bus runs from JBH as Bab al Shams is no longer owned by the Jumeirah group, I believe. Now part of the Meydan group, I think.

I did wonder about that too, Shamat, though it's not really under tents, either, is it? Mind you, what would be wonderful would be for the couple to stay the night at Bab al Shams after going to the Al Hadeerah restaurant, but that's more of an anniversary than a birthday thing to do, isn't it!

I think Jebel Ali resort does a romantic dinner (for 2, but you can always ask for more, I imagine) on their beach: http://www.jebelali-international.com/promotions/restaurant/Dinner_under_the_stars.aspx Or do you think your friend means a desert safari: http://travel.theemiratesnetwork.com/to_do/dubai_desert_safari.php Enjoy!

A better question might be 'where can I find X product?' - most of us make trips to several supermarkets to tick off all the boxes on our shopping lists on a regular basis. It's one of the things my friends back in the states can't quite understand why it takes me so many days to get my shopping done. Because I'm running around to all the different stores. LOL Same applies in the UK and Switzerland. I can't find everything I want in one supermarket there, either.

There have been a few threads on here about this but apparently the usual hang out to hire guys with trucks is by DAA in Al Barsha just when you turn off of umm Suqueim Rd. Not sure if they are there on Friday though. Worth going to have a look and an ask tomorrow morning, though. Sorry, can't remember if we've used them on a Friday.

Nimonemo, I think that your visits to villages in Africa are extremely different from men going into a Dubai Mall and taking surreptitious photos of children without them or their parents being aware of it.

Quite clearly the answer to the question is very simple for some, for others, like myself, the only answer I can give is 'No Mans Land'. That is where I am from. I can tell you where my parents are from, but even then, they left at the age of 16 for other lands, so now at the age of 70+ does that even count? TBH I hate this question. I'm curious, does this mean there is no place you consider your home? Or there is nowhere you feel you have roots? Nowhere that influenced you strongly whilst you were growing up? I'm not expecting any answers, since you hate that sort of question, but would be really interested to know!

According to the Dubai FAQs information guide, this is what it says in "The Dubai Code of Conduct decency rules and laws": Q: Photos of people - and especially photos of women and families - in public places shall not be taken without their permission. Taking photos of people is a sensitive issue in Dubai’s local culture. UQ. Not clear if it is a law? I can't find the relevant page on www.dubai.ae.

Those are just the ages when they will be bored wherever you go.. Maybe they should just take electronic games with them and sit and enjoy the food.. Somebody just mentioned Beachcombers at Jumeirah Beach Hotel as a family-friendly Saturday brunch - maybe they could go swimming from the beach there, that might amuse them for a bit?

The Cellar closed 3 weeks ago. I don't know what, if anything, will replace it. It is a real shame. It was reall good and good value for money. Latitude does a good Saturday brunch, nice and family-orientated and there's an excellent Saturday Roast lunch buffet (including oinks) at Nineteen at the Address at the Montgomerie Club.

We went there with an emergency on a Friday 3 weeks ago and the chap on duty got the diagnosis right, problem was, there was no gynaecologist available to do the ultrasound which was necessary to confirm the diagnosis, so we landed up at Welcare. We were impressed, he had done other tests to rule out other things and then decided, after some treatment which didn't work, that it must be gynaecological. I'm sorry, I don't know his name, but I think he was Egyptian?

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to names, or should I say I like *proper* names rather than *made up* names and to me they all sound a bit daft with the exception of Nina and Giselle that are *proper* names within the context of the countries they originate. But.... each to their own. I fully understand that one man's trash is another man's treasure. I agree... My friend named her little boy Orlando - she asked me if if i liked it my response was you wont find another Orlando in the vacinity so well done :) Another friend has a little girl called Autumn Orlando after the character in "As You Like It"?

My mother is half-Devonshire, half-Irish and her parents met at the Royal Palace in Madrid, where they worked for the King and Queen of Spain. They emigrated to France at the time of the revolution in Spain and then settled in England, running a sweetie-shop. My father was Breton, though born in Fez, as his father was a military man, and he met my mother when he went to work in the French Section of the BBC World Service. So I'm a bit of a mixture, born in the London suburbs, lived and worked in London, Belgium, France, New York and Geneva. Married to a Greek, with a daughter who is more Swiss than anything else. Second year in Dubai and still amazed to be here - admittedly, we are amongst those who manage to live in a little ex-pat bubble. My residence visa is in my Swiss passport. edited by simpleasabc on 12/10/2011 <em>edited by simpleasabc on 12/10/2011</em>

Khatoon, My Husband and I (said in Queenie's broadcasting voice) had a "date" at the Lakes Club this evening and discussed how we were really happy to be chatting together and enjoying each other's company after 20 years of marriage. We are grateful to be here, not in Europe. Our poor daughter has had an appalling time recently, we hope she will get better soon and we were thanking God for her and for each other. We are also grateful for the teachers at her new school, who are amazing. Sorry if that sounds soppy but hope it may help you somehow. Also hope you get your visa sorted soon.

I use European credit cards on both Amazon UK and US. I think the main thing is to register your Kindle to the UK or US site in order to be able to download a wider variety of books. The only thing is, I don't know if you are then allowed to use your UAE cc to pay. Sorry I can't be more help.

Definitive Central Perk in Jumeirah 3 (between Jumeirah Road and Spinneys) and Shakespeare & Co in Al Wasl Road, next to Choitrams. Food and service is good, but the most important thing is - the interior and atmosphere. Ooh, good to know, I spotted Central Perk for the first time last week (whilst getting lost on my way home from somewhereorother) and wondered what it was like :) Will try and find it again sometime. My own particular fave is Shakespeare's at the Town Centre, particularly in winter when you can sit outside and inhale the scent of the apple shisha :D

I've only sent documents from that DHL desk and they provided the envelope and were exorbitantly expensive for sending a contract back to Greece. I should imagine they would provide the box but the cost would probably be the same as the dress itself :( Have you had a look here? http://www.dhl.co.ae/en/mail/international_services/parcel.html There's a contact number you could try, as well.

I haven't given birth here but have recently been frequenting the gynae and obstetrics department of the Welcare Hospital and have only praise for the care my daughter received there in an emergency and subsequently. If I were to be having a baby now, I would be happy to have it here, with my little experience. Also, has anyone told you you are not obliged to have an epidural? :D

Does anyone feel the same way I do about the roads being finally completed around the school but still a hassle for the parents picking up? Does the fact that you have to go all the way to springs to turn back bother anyone else but me?And what is the school management doing by being rude policemen? I'm sure it doesn't - writing as a former DIA parent, I'd be furious. Couldn't believe it when I saw the "no left-hand turn" sign at the car-park exit. Seems pretty pointless.
