Have you done a posh afternoon tea anywhere? I really like the one at Al Qasr. It's huge, 1 serving will do for two people, you just ask for extra drinks and it's in a lovely setting if you don't find the balcony too hot.

Have you tried visiting the Consulate here in Dubai between 8 and 11 any working day except Tuesday to ask your question there?

Sorry simpleas, we all know you used to be a proof reader and obviously that's a hard habit to break, but is it really necessary to belittle posters when they make minor errors ? Especially on here, where so many posters are not using their first language.... Every day I see typos on here that I find mildly irritating - my current one is ppl confusing " advice" with " advise" but I accept that this is a forum, not a university or top level business, and ppl's writing styles can be informal (or not in their native language), it doesn't matter.... Sorry Sue, as you say, I thoroughly agree that there are many many mistakes and typos here which are by people whose first language is not English (such as: advice and advise, lose and loose, here, here for hear, hear), and I have got used to sitting on my hands for them, but when the basic mistake of not knowing how to make a plural by adding an "s" is made by someone who is clearly native English, I'm afraid my fingers fly away with me. My apologies to Lady Farquhar if she is not English born and bred and educated in England. I was also not trying to rude but to extract the Michael from my self for knowingly being such a pain on this matter. I'll try and be good in future. You must admit, I only let myself go once every few months, nowadays :( You can't believe the amount of self-restraint that has gone into it ;) I believe it's the source of my high blood-pressure :\:

When is Eid in November? and simpleasabc, what has this got to do with getting an Emirates ID? No idea, Mrs Orchid, just that you seem to be having one problem after another, why not at least get the Emirates ID aspect fixed so you don't have to worry about that?

Many congratulations, Redlesley :) Ahh thank you! DH is in South Africa unfortunately but I consoled myself with a fantastic sausage sandwich and a can of coke zero! Just had a lovely bath and going to watch some trash tv before an early night with my Kindle - perfect evening I think! Perhaps best not let your husband see this - he can be replaced by a sausage sarnie and a coke zero, along with a bath and a Kindle??? I thought *I'd* been married too long when we got to 20 this year..

If fans is the plural of fan, why isn't photos (without the apostrophe) the plural of photo? I'm sorry, I know it's not "done", but really, is adding a simple s to a word to make a plural so difficult? What's with the grocer's apostrophe?

I was watching on OSN but they only screened episodes 1-5 and not the last 2 episodes of season 1! So peed off at that. Did you all watch it through downloads? They did, but after a break of a few weeks for some reason, I think. Well, I'm fairly sure I watched all the first series on OSN and not downloads. When is the second series starting on OSN, anyone know?

I was intending to get a Moonpig card for husbad's birthday on Thursday, but with our dorter's drama over the week-end, I clean forgot about it. I know about Hallmark card shops, but is there anywhere in Dubai I could find something a bit different? Thanks in advance.

I'm racking my brains as I'm sure I saw one in a supermarket recently. It would have been Carrefour at the MoE, Geant at Ibn Battuta or the big Spinneys at Motor City (I've a feeling it was the latter).

I haven't watched it yet, but my mother did and she thought it was a bit "Meh". But then she thinks most things are "Meh" at the mo and didn't particularly enjoy the first series, either. I am hoping to be able to watch it today when dorter's not hogging all the bandwidth to herself (she's entitled to it at the mo, though, poor lass).

Why don't you and your friends stop panicking and start the process? Sorry to sound harsh, but just what is stopping you getting on with it now?

IAMVP, not sure if you have a teenaged daughter, but just so mothers here know, ovarian cysts are most common in 15-16 year old girls. If your daughter regularly complains of a pain on one side of her abdomen, and the doc doesn't know what it is, or tells you it is stress, ask for an ultrasound of the ovaries. They'll do that here automatically, but not in Switzerland, apparently.

If you want to witness complete chaos - Wellington Int School on SZR !!!!!!!!!! Our apartment looks right down onto it and there is NO WAY I would ever want to subject myself to the delights of drop off and pick up there ;) We've just started there. Morning drop off no prob if you're in time and your child will walk a bit; every afternoon except Thurs (early finish, don't know why that makes such a huge difference) is easy if you assume the right position (also with Sixth Former).oh, so that is where you moved your DD. How is it going there? Is it IB or A Levels? As much as we know of it, we like it. She's only been there just over a week. It's still IB. Slight problem in that dorter will be off school for a while yet as she is just out of hospital having undergone an emergency op, because of a massive ovarian cyst, on Friday. Consistent misdiagnosis of her frequent abdominal pains and therefore no ultrasound scanning for the past two or three years (in Switzerland), resulted in her losing an ovary and a Fallopian tube.

We have just had the most splendid care from Dr Jennifer Kasirsky at the Welcare Hospital. I didn't realize she practiced as a gynae in her spare time, we met her late on Friday night as a surgeon in the Emergency Dept when daughter was admitted for the removal of a huge ovarian cyst. I cannot speak too highly of her. Nor of the entire emergency gynaecology and cardiac team at the Welcare Hospital.

Really good you're getting treated and taking a month off. Try to relax, I know it's difficult if you're used to having been busy and at the centre of things, but once you manage to switch off, you're half way to recovery. Have a good rest!

When we signed up for our package with Du, we were told there was no point paying for the top broadband speed as it was never achieved here, and not really worth paying for the second top one as it wasn't up to much either. We did and it isn't.

When I saw her at about 7.12 am she was walking at a brisk pace on the path going in the direction of the Al Khail Road. She had a blonde-ish ponytail and was in black shorts and top and pushing one of those baby holders designed specially for jogging. I've seen her often before and admired her stamina in this heat. Never seen her jogging on the road into oncoming traffic. Or are there two active ladies who jog with their babies along that back road every morning?

I don't know anything good or bad about Montessori schools in Dubai, I'm afraid, but in my experience, Montessori is an approach to learning/education, rather than a curriculum in itself, so you probably will be fine with a British Curriculum Montessori school. ETA: I think the Montessori system is great, but it spoils children for other systems if they are obliged to change back to the more "traditional" approach when they get a bit older. My daughter found it very difficult to adapt to the stricter, more rigid teaching methods of the French system after having been at a Montessori school till she was 9. The only country I know of where children are taught in the Montessori system all the way till they leave secondary school is Holland. <em>edited by simpleasabc on 15/09/2011</em>

Hasn't your husband already had an issue with this company and his passport? Why doesn't he get the ID card organized himself, if he already has the residence visa in his passport? (That is why the co would need his passport, as you proof of residence before getting the ID). He will need to go himself anyway for fingerprints, so why get the company involved. If you put ID Barsha typing into the search function, you will get any number of threads to help. Here's one to get you going: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=138366

To get an ID card, proof of residence is necessary. As your residence visa is in your passport, the typing centre will keep your passport whilst preparing your application form and in most cases, it seems, you have to leave your passport at the typing centre for a while. You also have to have your passport with you when you go for the next bit (can't remember if that is just for fingerprints, or photo at same time?) - anyhow, the company can't take your husband's fingerprints, he will have to go himself to the ID centre and at that point, he can take his passport back.

Hang on, that's our way out of here when we don't want to take SZR. Or is it? We certainly use the Al Khail roundabout to get on to the Emirates Road for Mirdiff and the airport. This is mad, would you mind sending me the diagram too please, Guinness, to: - husbad's going to be upset, he spends more time at the airport than at home. Have to warn him for when he comes back from his travels.. <em>edited by simpleasabc on 14/09/2011</em>

I don't think there is; for food, the nearest thing I can think of is "The Times" promotion where you have to collect vouchers and the scheme isn't valid the whole year: http://www.money.co.uk/article/1002427-eat-out-from-5-pounds-with-the-times.htm You can also look here: http://www.moneymagpie.com/article/1035/eat-out-on-the-cheap-how-to-get-the-best-restaurant-deals/ I've never heard of anything like any of the Entertainer books in the UK, but not having lived there for years, I will bow to the superior knowledge of anyone who's living there at present :)

Oh how sad WM, I just read in Time out kids an article about SANDS in Dubai, 055 393 2804, www.dubai-sands.org. Hope this is a start and may offer some leads. UK SANDS are excellent. Is there a miscarriage association in the UAE? Yes the DUBAI SANDS as posted, a good first port of call to speak to for advice to see if they have anyone in AD. There was an article in September Time out kids, not sure if available on line. Sorry, I should have capitalized Miscarriage Association, it is a separate entity from SANDS, hence my question.
