Oooh, yes, seeing mention of "Mistresses" has reminded me of "Cutting It". And nobody has mentioned "Downton Abbey" yet :)

When I made Banoffee Pie a few months ago, I boiled the tin for at least 4hours, as Jill says, making sure the water was topped up all the time. Alternatively, as I later realized, I could have bought a pouch of Waitrose Toffee Sauce (available in a Waitrose or Spinneys near you ;) ).

yeah :) i am hoping there is a "profile preferences" or "user settings" etc option on EW, i cannot find any, but maybe it is just me... Are there websites where you can do that? Really? Gosh, I've always either imposed my own same fonts on every site or accepted what every site gives me.

I don't think you can change the font on individual websites, but I'll wait to stand corrected, as I'd like that option, too :)

Depends on your browser and OS. I'm using Firefox in Windows XP which gives me the option (Tools > Options > Content > Fonts and Colours > Advanced) to allow websites to choose their own fonts, or not.

Sorry, Wuffles, I was a bit thrown by your mention of Chester as being between Gloucester and London, is all :) Bristol and Bath are near enough to each other for you to easily spend one day and a night in each and then get the fast train back to London from either place. They are both lovely places to wander round, as well. The Pump Rooms are really nice (bit smelly ;) ) and the Bristol Museum has a lot to offer. (Feeling nostalgic for my student days now:) ) edited by simpleasabc on 28/08/2011

Wuffles, I'm sorry if this sounds rude, but from what you are saying, I'm not sure if you've looked at a map? Wales (and Bath) is much nearer to Gloucester than Chester, which is over 100 miles to the north of Gloucester, whilst London is less than 100 miles to the south-east of Gloucester. Bath is a beautiful place and Bristol, just down the road, is also gorgeous, particularly the Clifton (university) area. I still think, if you want somewhere to stay for two nights, on the way to Gloucester from London using public transport, Oxford is the best place - loads of interesting walks, lovely river banks, punting :)

Good grief, I hadn't realized the train and bus services in England had deteriorated so badly :) I would think Oxford would be the obvious choice, or go to one of the lovely Cotswold villages like Broadway or Burford? Or else take a little detour into Welsh Wales?

I'm using the Firefox browser, which gives me the option (Tools > Options > Content > Fonts and Colours > Advanced) to allow websites to choose their own fonts, or not. Did you see that research which showed that people who use Firefox are smarter than those that use plain old Internet Explorer? Am I surprised? ;) (That when I google for the story, I see the caveat "it now seems likely this story may have been a hoax" :D )

Looking at that recipe, it seems as if there is far more sugar in Marshmallow Fluff than in meringues. Apparently, you can make marshmallows with Marshmallow Fluff - I'd be surprised if you found it in Waitrose, as PI says, more likely American-oriented supermarkets will have it.

We adopted our dog from K9 Friends and the only place we have been really happy to take her and where she is happy to stay and we know she is well looked after and part of the family is with Johanna and her family at the Dubai Dog Academy in Al Barsha, tel: 050 871 0060. Because we foolishly left it too late to book for Johanna this summer (she only takes a few dogs at a time, the ground floor of her house is made over to the dogs she looks after), we've had a couple of disastrous experiences with kennels in Dubai and only want our K9 friend to stay with Johanna in future. I think she is fully booked till the first week in September, but give her a call anyway. Last time Pinga stayed there, I think we paid AED70 per night, all inclusive, but I might be wrong. This has been a Dog Service Announcement, I have no affiliation to the Dubai Dog Academy and am not paid to advertise for them :) edited by simpleasabc on 25/08/2011

Gosh, I haven't seen Philly cream cheese in a block for years - mind you, I suppose not having lived in England for over 20 years would do that. I use the Philly spread very successfully for cheesecakes, though I don't bake them.

Did Guinness think better of her pithy comment yesterday, then? I did! I thought it was a bit harsh (and probably more about my OCD than the OP's job hunt) so I deleted it. I thought it was harsh but accurate and I am glad to see AmyAus82 making the same point, albeit in a more flowery way :) You may have noticed my own obsession with a site called alt.possessive.its.has.no.apostrophe? :D

Kelly, Dorter and I were offered different second appointments at the same place (Al Barsha). I just rang them up and they asked me when it would suit us to come and we went 3 weeks later. I got the impression (also from other threads on this end 2010 beg 2011) that you could just turn up when you felt like it and they would deal with you immediately in the Ladies Only bit.. The worst part for us was that we had to go to the Central Post Office to pick the cards up when they arrived and despite Dorter and I having been "done" at the same time on the same day, there was a month's difference between the arrival of our cards ;) edited by simpleasabc on 23/08/2011

I believe they are stricter about use of ID cards in Abu Dhabi as it is where the UAE government is? The thing is, if they start fining people for not having the cards, that'll be a nice little earner too.. Theoretically, since Jan 1st, you can't buy a car here without an Emirates ID card, nor renew the car registration, but I don't know if that is actually how it works in practice?

MoT, most people don't know about it when they first arrive, unless there happens to be a helpful thread about it on EW. As I mentioned on an earlier thread, my husband told his company that the ID cards were compulsory because I learnt about them from EW - if I hadn't read about it here, we would still be ID card-less and maybe heading for trouble, as we rarely read the local newspapers.

Jane, some random thoughts :) I shouldn't think there would be any more problem bringing a dog into Switzerland/France than into England. We are anticipating taking our dog back when we leave, and apart from expecting it to be hugely expensive and upsetting for our dog, there won't be any problems in having her with us. Of course, we own our home so allow ourselves to keep a pet, I'm not sure about the general rule there, but there seem to be plenty of dogs around. It is very unusual for people to buy in Switzerland, mortgages tend to last for 100 years and be passed on from parent to child as an inheritance. Most people rent, and stay in the same place for years and years, hence the difficulty in finding nice apartments to let in Geneva. As a foreigner (and possibly even if you're a Swiss national), you are not allowed to buy as an investment (I mean doing a place up for a quick sale and move to somewhere else in the same area), you can only sell without incurring huge taxes if you have owned a property for 10 years or if you leave the country for good. It's not easy to get a mortgage without at least a 20% deposit (we were only able to buy because of fortuitous circumstances, including a golden handshake in the right amount). If you do buy in the Geneva area, there are generous local government subsidies for installing solar heating :) I can't speak to buying in the French frontier area at all, but I think it's supposed to be much easier there. It is my understanding that you are far more likely to be able to find a job where you don't need French in Geneva than in Lausanne, but Swiss Sandy probably knows better than I do :) When are you going to have a nose around? edited by simpleasabc on 22/08/2011

AFAICT, it's nothing to do with the employer. My husband told his employers that they needed ID cards as they didn't know about it (they are mostly ex-pats there). My husband only knew about it thanks to me reading about it on "the Expat Woman", as he calls everyone on the forum ;)
