Thanks ladies! As both kids are having an operation on the same day, do you think they will put them in the same room? One is a girl (5) and one is a boy (3) probably not, ask at admissions to give you rooms next to each other 2 patients in one room wouldn't be safe... imagine if their meds got mixed up etc!! Erme - that can't be right. What about wards in England, for example (just to elucidate, where there can be as many as 8 or 10 patients together in the same room)? What about semi-private wards anywhere in the world (where there are 2 or 3 people in the same room)? ETA: Do you mean two patients of the same name having the same op? edited by simpleasabc on 27/06/2011

DEWA bills being paid by the co would be great and how wonderful it would be to have school fees paid by the co also :) No such luck :) You will see us gone before the end of our anticipated 3 years here, at the rate things are going, and dorter's education will be even more of a mess as a result. (Do y'see, I'm supposedly bilingual and have totally got French and English constructions confused here?)

Have you reported this at all, Di@DXB? Not wishing to upset you, but I'd be really worried if this had happened to me and would have been on the phone to the police like a shot..

I can't remember having seen the Almarai fresh cream, I land up with Rachel's organic creme fraiche every time, which isn't quite the same. Where do you find the Almarai?

Am another one who lives in a villa on the Palm and our DEWA bill is about 8000 each month too!!! Told hubby that as much as i love our home,i think it will be time to look elsewhere to live when our tenancy ends.(We pay,not DH's compnay) :( That's outrageous, Purple31 :( I haven't checked this month's DEWA bill but I'm dreading it. Last month was double the previous one, anyway and I'm expecting worse this time - I wouldn't be surprised if it was 4000, which is terrible, considering we started on 800 including housing fee..

Discussing salary packages is more taboo than discussing sox, cancer and death, it seems. Well most contracts actually state that discussing company policies or inside info can lead to dismissal! Gosh, like signing the Official Secrets Act when you clean toilets for the Civil Service ;) ETA: Sorry, that looks a lot ruder than I meant. You are, of course, right, but I didn't really get the impression that was why the OP was worried. I may well have misconstrued the original post. edited by simpleasabc on 27/06/2011

I really like the Al Hambra - just get a few tapas, they're v generous with the portions and they bring gorgeous hot potato bread before and it doesn't really break the bank that much, with a few of you sharing. I absolutely love their patatas bravas, could eat them all day :)

Lynn, I believe she was being very racist about her ad. S/he was asking for a British passport-holder for a very clearly defined reason, for getting documents stamped at the British Embassy. That's not racist, it's practical.

I can't remember, SQ, are they both having their adenoids out as well? Wouldn't that help with the frequent ear-aches (in more ways than one;) )?

Thanks, CP, I've done the trip myself, when it was cooler and I seem to remember that they didn't go on too late at night. I'm afraid Ma came expecting to dislike it here and has not disappointed herself. She's already driving us all mad in many ways, but the heat related one is that she insists on taking her Spanish fan with her wherever she goes and, in particular, flapping it frantically in front of her face in the air-conditioned car..

Yep, it's the "heart aspirin" - Ma forgot hers. And I forgot to say that she wants it soluble, so Aspimed is not an option. But thank you for the info, will know what to get if desperate :) OK, thank you, Ibn B not necessary now, I'm told, but for future reference, is there a dedicated office supplies shop anywhere around - I'm thinking like "Ryman's", or "Office World"?

Ma arrived safely late last night, thank you, having had an excellent flight, which was early, and being very well looked after in Club and fast-tracked through the airport. She is now anxious about going to Mass tomorrow, but that won't be a problem. I haven't been able to get insurance sorted as she seems to be too old, even though she isn't suffering from a terminal illness and has a certificate from her doctor saying she is fit to travel to Dubai - he was the one who encouraged her to visit us and even took her off her BP tablets before she came away :) There's one more company I will try now I have her here to tell me exactly what is and isn't wrong with her, otherwise we'll just have to keep fingers crossed she doesn't have another TIA. I'd love that coffee, Arohadxb, but better not duck out on her first day here - will be in touch when I feel the need to "go to the gym", if that's OK? :)

So no roundabout between spinneys and choitrams at all? I saw the tanker on its side today about 10.50am but they let me make a u-turn at meadows 7 (going back toward choitram). Oh, heavens, it was bad enough having to go down to that roundabout from Springs 14, now we've got to go all the way to the end and back again? Do you think they might manage to put traffic lights in there, where they are clearly needed? Alternatively, they could have made that roundabout a lot safer by making it larger.

Yes. I have been warned of cold drinks, ice cream, ice cubes, air conditioners -- you name it, it is bad for you according to many people living in warm climates. Husband and family drives me crazy --- I just ignore. Both my kids are healty adults now. Yes, our Greek family and friends believe exactly the same, at least for the winter months there :) They also think hot food is bad for you.

Unfortunately, my mother is 85 and getting dottier by the minute and doesn't know if her current private insurance will cover her for travelling. Actually, you're right, we could get medical insurance from here for just a month, couldn't we? I was assuming it had to be from the UK, but presumably it could just as well be bought here? Any suggestions of a company who would do that? You let your 85 year old mother travel to the UAE without checking her medical coverage??? What's the matter with you? Google is your friend in 3 seconds flat i have found the following for you. http://www.moneysupermarket.com/c/travel-insurance/pre-existing/medical/conditions/ http://www.staysure.co.uk/travel-insurance?gclid=CNPAmLjEzqkCFdQOfAodMkiMMw http://www.saga.co.uk/insurance/health-insurance/pmi.asp http://www.insureforall.com/elderly-travel-insurance.cfm http://www.allcleartravel.co.uk/cgi-bin/lansaweb?procfun+msdweb01+msdw009+alc I'm sure with some effort you could find many more! You have no idea of the full story and what I've been dealing with at long-distance for the past year. Thank you for the suggestions, I can't do anything now till my mother arrives. Apparently, there is a new regulation going to be enforced for visitors to Dubai - they will not receive their visa without proof of medical coverage. Anyhow, obviously if it was necessary, we would pay for my mother's treatment, but I wanted to know the best government hospital ED around.

I've just found out, (via telcon and email) it's 10 till 2.30, it's AED 450 pp for an international buffet, including buffet juices (orange juice and a whole load more). Other soft drinks, mineral water and alcohol are all extra. I think we'll stick to afternoon tea there and brunch at the Madinat :) edited by simpleasabc on 24/06/2011 edited by simpleasabc on 24/06/2011

So, the abaya one was extremely respectful and was deleted; the Cyprus ones have been resuscitated clearly for advertising purposes and haven't been deleted (though to be fair, it's Friday and they've not been up for long).

Anyone know what it's like now? I've just worked out, being very slow, that of course I can get out by the Meadows 9 and various Springs back road by the pylons, but since they've changed the road access at the other end, I can't get back in that way..

:D , lidkekiwi. Apart from the frozen meal, sounds much like my experiences with EasyJet in the past, and I had an atrocious experience with mislaid baggage and Swiss at Heathrow last Christmas (all to do with the snow, don't you know, but unbelievable hassle - yet more inefficient money-grabbing outsourcing (cf UK passport renewal for ex-pats). Would try Qatar Airways, but needed direct flight and I don't believe they do LHR to DXB? yes but easyjet are cheap... If you book well enough in advance, yes, I take your point :)

We used Jetsom Express (as they were at the time, recommended on EW) and Tony was our contact, too. Very expensive, but well worth it for saving hassle factor as we were in Geneva at the time, about to move to Dubai, and the dox were returned to us in the UAE very quickly. In the event, husbad's degree certificate was not required, but that is just one of the many strange things which have gone on since we got here..

Sorry, I'm afraid I don't know the answer - maybe you could call the information desk at the Mall itself? The number is: 4 436-1000. Unfortunately, their website is still under construction. Have you seen the DSS site: http://www.dubaievents.ae/en ? I can't work out from the DSS site if it is geared only towards children, or whether there is stuff I could take my visiting mother to. Are there fireworks, for example. Will we get banned for mentioning DSS? edited by simpleasabc on 24/06/2011

You are certainly not alone, Swiss Sandy :) Dorter struggled with German in Geneva and here has been forced to learn Spanish, against her will as she thought she didn't like learning new languages after her experiences with German. Probably because of her French mother tongue, she has sailed through the Spanish this year, and she says her knowledge of Greek (father tongue) also helped her with it :)
