Thank you to everyone who replied to my question so quickly, both here and elsewhere. I got off the SZR at the right exit all right, but got completely lost trying to find the hotel itself (who knew there were completed roads round the Business Bay metro now?) and was remarkably late getting there. Only just got back now ;)

Ashes is quite right about the IB curriculum being consistent worldwide; the only caveat is History, where different schools might be studying different themes.

The Dubai London Clinic has 24 hour walk in clinic. Not sure what facilities are available there on a Friday. The Rosary Clinic at the Springs Village is also open for emergencies on Fridays but also with limited facilities, they will tell you to go to a hospital if necessary, but would probably be able to diagnose a childhood illness. It always gets worse at night and on the week-end, doesn't it.. Hope your baby gets better soon. edited by simpleasabc on 24/05/2013

Here's a link to an article about this from December 2012, in Emirates 24/7: http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/can-landlord-evict-tenant-before-dubai-tenancy-contract-expires-2012-12-23-1.488271 The Q&A part is very clear that he has to give 12 months' notice even if he needs the property for himself.

Foremarke do start later - 8.30am to 1.30pm for FS1&2. I quite liked that idea! They said it was due to traffic and that they believe children learn better slightly later morning. There is lots of research that shows children are more receptive later in the day. However, the climate here is such that early starts mean the children can make the most of the cooler mornings.. We've had an exceptional winter/spring here this year, though - normally, we all go from air-conditioned environment to air-conditioned environment and even at 7.30am it is too hot for children to be out doing sports or playing in the sun, so I think the argument about cooler mornings is irrelevant to Dubai.

I don't live there, but apart from the contract you signed which included AC, which would, I believe, be proof enough for the Rent Committee/RERA, I would want proof from the real estate agent of the AED8000 they want from you - original bills from DEWA or whoever is the electricity supplier for your building. Without that, they can't charge you, surely - so I would get hold of the name and number the AC for your flat is contracted to and work from there. If it's in your own name, you should have been receiving bills.

You don't say where you're moving from, though someone suggested it was from the Springs - if that is so, the difference in distance isn't too bad, particularly if you give her a bike, which I think is an excellent idea! As long as you teach her to ride on the correct side of the road and not into oncoming traffic..

Agency charges vary and are nothing to do with their quality. I've paid from AED25 to AED 45 per hour. Currently paying AED35 for someone who unfortunately doesn't understand my English..

When we talk about a live-out maid, that would be a full-time maid on our sponsorship, usually. For what you want, an agency maid is the way to go, no need for you to sponsor them. There are a huge number of maid agencies here, I know, I think I have tried them all. None of them springs to mind as outstanding, it's often just the luck of the draw. People will recommend agencies based on their own good experience but often unless you are able to get the same maid, you won't necessarily be pleased.

Didnt know you can homeschool with the IB curriculum.Even on the IB page they say you cant homeschool. "[i'>Can I use the curriculum from an IB programme to h[/i'>[i'>om[/i'>[i'>e school my child? No. The IB permits only students enrolled in and attending IB World Schools to participate in an IB programme. Visit the pages for parents for more information about the IB and its programmes."[/i'> I know you can homeschool with the K12 system which gives you an US diploma. edited by Asti on 21/05/2013 Presumably the children will be enrolled at an IB school at the time they will be sitting the IB Diploma/Certificate, for Years 12 and 13.

Also, as the OP noted below, they will not even claim on the insurance cover while on the group scheme which is 3 years. So how is this unethical??? Apart from the fact that this could change and even SAVE someone's life! Where would your ethics stand on that one, Splinters? If you had the chance to save someone's life, would you refuse on the grounds of what you consider ethical? edited by Mmmmmm on 19/05/2013 [b'>Pretty big assumption that some random person from a random internet chat board would not claim on an insurance cover that they'd been given while they have admitted they have a serious illness for three years. You all are a lot more trusting than I've ever been![/b'> Yes, I can't say that I would take that as guaranteed when making my decision about this. I would be surprised if there wasn't a claim, and would take it into account.

If BUPA say they allow it, who are you to argue about the ethics? if you want to take your ethical influence from an insurance company; go ahead.... personally i find this unethical. The whole idea is to help someone who is in trouble and asking for help. That is where I take my ethics from.

is this really ethical? Yes really? i woulnd't have thought so.... using something that you are not entitled to, to get more out of an insurance company.... no matter what the circumstances are... If BUPA say they allow it, who are you to argue about the ethics?

There is no doubt that the Diploma is a challenge but it is do-able - it all depends on your child I guess. [b'>However I can vouch for the fact that the IB is definitely sought after and has opened doors to offers from some good universities.[/b'> HOWEVER the proof will be in the pudding on results day! Zimbomum, I'd be really interested to know which universities have given offers and for which subject(s) and predicted grades? Mine is waiting for her results before applying, which is why I have no real idea as to what universities want from IB Diploma students. Thanks.

Asti, yes. I wish our circumstances had been such that she could have studied AS and A levels. I think the IB is excellent for analytical thinkers and high academic flyers, but it is extremely demanding and a huge amount of work is required to get good results.

So sorry to have got your hopes up, my daughter has just told me they had to give all their IB text books back to the school after each exam finished. I can't believe it, that's never happened to me with a private school before. My daughter's French school refused to let us even give the books back to the school as they wanted each cohort to buy them new from the school every year! My daughter has just finished Year 13 in the IB system, she did her year 11 (last year of MYP) at a different school, where I see their Maths text book was not IB specific - it was Additional Maths for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE O level. I'm putting this up here in case someone has more useful text books on offer for you. Again, I'm so sorry to have got your hopes up like this. Good luck.

We have end of Middle Years and IB Diploma text books for which we may no longer have any use. We could lend them to you until we get the results; though we are of course hoping there will be no need to resit, you never know.. As for past Diploma papers, Google is your friend, and I think you can also pay to download them from the www.ibo.org web site. edited by simpleasabc on 18/05/2013

Abbie and Tassos, forgive my scepticism if Sandy has really been found at her carer's home and you are going to be giving such a huge reward. Call me a cynical old bag if you will, but I'm afraid I smell something fishy :( But I am very glad if you have really found your beloved dog and all is well in your world. Really? Unnecessary assumptions! We were out, the 4 if us looking for Sandy when the carer called, happy and crying, that Sandy found her way back to her house Nobody talks or claims the reward. They are just happy they have Sandy back. Let's not spoil it with theories!! Now I'm hugging my pooches! :) :) Delighted to hear it! So happy for everyone Sandy is found! Forgive my cynicism.

I would look into why they are not hungry in the morning and what they've eaten and at what time the night before. You should wake up hungry after all those hours. It is such an important meal. I don't know how they can function without a decent breakfast. If they're hungry then they should be less fussy. I wouldn't give sausages very often as they are processed. I don't know where you can get good quality butcher sausages here but I'd love to know! Birchermuesli is good and it's soft so easy to eat. Oats, natural yoghurt, quality sugar free apple juice and grated apples soaked overnight. Top with berries. My child, now 18, has never managed to eat breakfast till at least an hour after she has got out of bed. The earlier she rises, the comparatively later she eats. It's nothing to do with when and what she's eaten the night before, it's to do with the fact she is not a happy early riser and can't stomach any food till 8.00am at the earliest.

Welcome to Dubai! There are lots of lovely restaurants in Dubai, it really depends what you want. Maybe you could try one of the "signature" restaurants at Madinat Jumeirah and go to the Mina A' Salam hotel entrance and take an abra to the one of your choice - fantastic experience the first time you do it. You might want to take advantage of this offer, but even if not, you can see a list of the Madinat "Signature" restaurants here: [u'>https://www.jumeirah.com/en/hotels-resorts/dubai/madinat-jumeirah/offers/jumeirah-restaurant-week/[/u'> We get special occasion cakes from Shakespeare & Co (branches round about) or Brunetti in the Dubai Mall - but it's difficult to get small sized cakes, unless you just buy individual ones! edited by simpleasabc on 16/05/2013 edited by simpleasabc on 16/05/2013
