Yeah, that makes sense. I figured they'd have to allow 'flatmate' arrangements for the reasons stated, but back last year when the papers were on about it, made it sound like you couldn't even share with one of your friends if you weren't related! I know a lot of crew who want to move out and live with friends but haven't because of all this talk about not sharing... at least we know what they mean now!

I didn't think people were supposed to share anyway, unless in an approved 'company accommodation' arrangement- but I might be wrong...

Has your Wii been modified with a chip at all? (You know, to play multiregion games?) If it has, when you play a game from a 'different' region, you can't use the traditional CD loader on the main menu, you need to get a 3rd party loader installed and use that. I was also told after getting mine done with the chip before i moved that I could never update it again as this would happen. I'll see if I can load up my Wii and check what the loader program is called. Something like USB-Loader- it will play both games copied to disk/hard drive and games from a region other than where the Wii was purchased. (Admin Please note I am not recommending the use of fake games- my Wii was modded so that I could copy my genuine games onto hard disk and take that travelling with me, and leave my discs at home to prevent them getting lost/stolen) OP have you tried googling the error message? I learnt a lot from forums about how to fix issues with my Wii when I had problems getting the hard drive to load. Also, if your Wii is from UK/Oz a lot of the online functions won't work because it seems to know that you are outside that region. Mine is from Oz so I need to buy Wii Shop cards in Oz to be able to buy anything, even though technically we are in an NTSC zone... if that makes sense!

Yes that's pretty much how it works, I have a Galaxy as well. If you have a newer phone with a data plan, you can also do what's called 'tethering'- using the Bluetooth or other connection to use the phone's data plan to get internet on the Tab when you're not in wifi range. Of course if it's a wifi/3G model with both, then you can just get a micro sim for it from Du/Etisalat just like you can with an iPhone/iPad. Google has plenty of tutorials posted on how to do these things. I also found Amazon.com reviews helpful as people were discussing issues they were having in the comments section and helping each other with it. HTH

There were some in C4 the other day, about 50dhs I think. You mean a frame on wheels with fabric bag on it, right? They have a flap on top with a velcro fastener?

Thanks for your tips!! I'm not sure about getting an abaya made, but if I can wear mine a lot for this Ramadan will probably get one for next year. I'll need to look up how to do the scarf the right way, I was the same when I tried it, kept falling off. Guess that's why so many ladies like 'big' hair lol Maybe we should ask EW to organise an abaya-wearing class. And could do things like henna, Arabic eye make up etc. That could be really fun and a chance to learn more from the local/Arab ladies

I had it good? Hmmm glad you can know my life so well from a computer screen. Just because my parents helped me with my image doesn't mean other people were so kind... in my opinion we all have to take some personal responsibility, yes it takes experience and strength to keep a good mindset when people around you tel lyou you're nothing or you need X or Y to be better... but at the end of the day you become what you let people make you. Either you go along with it or you say "I don't want to do/be that" and make a choice. Sometimes people have painful childhoods til they work this out and maybe it takes some outside help but just because someone seems to have a positive self image doesn't mean they 'had it good'. Sometimes they had to MAKE it good. I regularly had other people tease me for being nerdy/brainy/bookworm/teacher's pet/good too shoes and it goes on... I CHOSE for myself that those things weren't important, my parents told me that to do well in school gives you more opportunities but they didn't force me to do well either, they praised me when I did but always told me that my choices in school had consequences... FYI I had far more self images issues later in my teens/early 20's than I did in school, honestly I would worry far more about a daughter in late high school than primary because it is harder to change her thoughts then... ETA: I was always being compared to my older, prettier (in their opinion) sister by near relatives like cousins and other people so I actually do know how it feels. I had dark hair and darker looks and she was blond and fair. My mum told me the story of Snow White and Rose Red- I identified with it because they were different to each other but still pretty in their own way. edited by SkyKitty on 06/06/2012

No I felt I did well anyway because my parents praised me for how well I was doing in school and taught me to make effort in things other than my looks. I just felt I had cr@p hair, not that I was a cr@p person... lol then I became a teenager and discovered that you can change your hair with dye or crimping, but you couldn't change your grades.... so I was glad I put the time into that and not my looks

We had the same thing with curly vs straight hair when I was in school. My hair is poker straight and I hated that all the other girls had nice wavy or curly hair, fast forward 15 years and now everyone's jealoud that I don't spend dollars and hours making my hair straight! As another poster said, we always want what we don't have, and any of those kids are probably thinking more about that the other girl has a better Barbie or that boy has newer PS3 games... not really about their skin! If it was in a place aimed at teenagers I'd be more worried but these days there are so many conflicting messages in the media anyway. I don't think you can say it's "wrong" because it may be for you but not for others... just have to try teach your own kids how you want them to think of themselves and give them the tools to see through all the media cr@p.

Am pretty sure the lady drivers are taught how to fit the car seat, at least, this is what a couple of them have told me... so, I would guess you are better off with them, or at least a driver who is a dad and has used one before :P

Sorry just saw you're going TO the airport. In which case I would guess you need to book a ladies' taxi? Depending on where you are coming from and at what time, is the metro an option? You can take suitcases on it provided they are not huge and you use the spaces provided near the carriage door, contrary to rumour that you cannot. And of course you can take a stroller/pram too.

I came in through T3 yesterday, and I asked about this because I know lots of ladies ask here. They have a lopcker with about 5 or six car seats- the guy told me that they can be requested free of charge when using a 'normal' sedan taxi. He also said the best way is to just take a Ladies' (pink roof) or 'Family' (red roofed-van type) taxi, Ladies taxi ALWAYS have a car seat in them. Ladies and Family taxi specifically wait at the airport for this reason. HTH

Ok thanks AnonDubai, I figured it's ok, because I see local ladies doing this, but wasn't sure if different 'rules' apply to a non-Muslim expat wearing abaya (like if we have to be more strict with it or not) And I cannot for the life of me work out the shayla, I suppose big hair is in for a reason- it keeps it on your head more easily! :P I want to buy one of those big poufy hairclips but they seem so expensive... then again I only have seen them in the malls, not sure where else to buy them but all I have seen have been over 100dhs!

Well I chickened out last year after I overhead some ladies saying that expats wearing abayas is 'try hard'. I suppose it is if they are only doing it to get perceived 'benefits' if you know what I mean. I'd really like to try it whenever I have days off in Dubai during Ramadan, and if I can go to one of the shared meals at the Sh. Mohammed Centre have heard they are really good!

I wearing an abaya 'open in front' a no-no? I bought one whenI first arrived in Dubai (from C4 lol- only 40dhs) and it has really lovely embroidery on it, but it closes with snaps so it's open from about the knee down. If I wore a long skirt underneath would it be considered 'wrong' that you can see the clothes underneath? Just that I am curious to try it during Ramadan. Also I am scared after seeing nasty comments about expats wearing abayas. I want to only because I'd like to understand what it is like to dress that way. edited by SkyKitty on 02/06/2012

Annoying because I got mine pretty much as soon as I arrived (because it was in the papers EVERY DAY) and now people who never bothered end up paying less than me, because mine is supposedly linked to my visa BUT my card expires next year and my visa the year after that- my card really only got a bit over a year validity because even though I applied for it one month the validity went from then not from when they made the card, which was some time after that! Cheated out of 3-4 months worth!!

When you say properly, what exactly do you mean? I notice some younger girls wear the front of the abaya 'open'- I'm guessing this is more of a fad than something they are meant to do, or does it not matter so long as they are wearing something covered up underneath (e.g I always see this with jeans and amazing heels- guess they wanna show off the shoes! :D) I get that some people don't like expats wearing abaya, but I wouldn't mind trying it during say, Ramadan... any good "how-to's" out there, Youtube etc?

I used to drink this too, to help me have enough water all day. I just find it hard to drink 2L of 'plain' water... anyway recently my local supermarket stopped stocking it but Waitrose in DM seemed to have some, so I stocked up. Til I happened to look at the label and see the aspartame on it. Am sure it didn't have it in when I first bought it. The ones I have are sugar free; anyone have the 'regular' bottle and does it still have the artificial sweetener in it?

While I understand the need for discretion with regards to crew accomm downroute, it's not exactly a secret where they stay in Dubai, given the gigantic EK logo emblazoned on the side of the buses that come all day and night! Not exactly top secret info for anyone with a pair of eyes... ;) I get in a cab from visiting any of my friends or going to an EK accomm/villa and the first thing the cabbie says to me "Ahhh... you are Emirates?"

Another important this to show your kids (especialyl if they are used to travelling) is the difference in exit signs between countries. Most now use the international green 'Running Man' but older buildings in the US and some other countries still have red 'EXIT' signs. Kids normally associate red with 'stop' (traffic lights) so if they are from the US they might automatically look for a red light not a green one (especially if they can't yet read. So show them pictures of what different signs can look like (running man, exit, this way, no entry etc) I recently bought smoke detectors for my apartment because even though we hav sprinklers in every bedroom and an inbuilt detector, the alarms cannot be heard from the furthest bedroom when the hall door is closed as the speakers are in the hall. I haven't seen any inside the apartment itself. We also always get false alarms from cooking and to be honest I am usually the only one traisping down to the lobby!! :O I also periodically check the stairs because it's not uncommon for people to dump stuff there when they move out and of course they can't check it every single day... I don't know exactly what happened (just heard there was a fire and lots of kids died) so so sad.... Some people call me paranoid but because of my job I always find myself automatically looking for the fire exit, the fire extinguisher and if I pass it close enough I actualyl check "needle in the green zone"! (Once a crew.... always a crew!)

Anyone in your street/building with a dog who would be willing to help out if you left money for food/bills/etc plus a bit for their time? What does DH do for work- does he have a skill he could use for someone else in return for them looking after the dog when he's gone- e.g. if he's accountant perhaps he could do their accounts for them, they look after the dog? Might work out okay if professional dog-sitting is not in the budget...

I definitely saw some outfits for kids in animal shapes in Pottery Barn Kids at Dubai Mall a few weeks ago... I can't recall if it was a whale or a shark but it had fins, maybe try giving them a call? They were basically plush outfits that zips up the front and then have a hood with the animal face/head, the one I saw had fins and they had other animals too...

Probably a fault in the film and/or interpreted wrongly... girl in my group of employees got pulled as they thought she had TB, turned out it was a mark on the filmand the person reading films was so snowed under with people to check that they had missed that it was the film and not her. So doing it again clearly showed it wasn't her lung... With the chest x-rays a suspicious mark doesn't necessarily mean it's all over- often they just want tests to be sure the TB is no longer active, and wasn't too severe..

Thing that annoys me is, ministry is getting so worked up over labourers swimming in their tighty whities (who mostly don't know any better) yet continue to allow these z-listers to have their bits out and be photographed snogging in public, when most couples can't even hold hands! The standards should be the same for everyone, I was shocked to see a woman in Dubai Mall this week wearing daisy duke length black shorts, a tight see through white t-shirt and stripper heels. I mean really?! And she would totally know better, but obviously doesn't care, as mentioned on the swimming shorts thread.

Not sure why they would need people to be re-tested to find out 'who' it was- surely each vial is labelled? Though going by how random drug testing is carried out here, I would not be surprised if some people get a false positive. I once had a urine test for drugs and to say it would have failed the 'chain of evidence' test would be an understatement... I had free and easy access to my handbag at all times and was given a regular water cup to use instead of a specimen container! (Ew!) I would guess it could be because whoever was doing the sampling may have accidentally destroyed the samples and didn't have enough extra to do complete tests, hence getting everyone in again to get more samples. Apparently it can be quite common using a centrifuge to keep it too long and destroy it- or so a friend in the field tells me...

Haha. Grew up in French Speaking society and my elders would have corrected me had I given a nonchalent answer like Non..... which is exactly my point.... if their elders have not taught them, then they will not know! It's not correct to say the child is rude, they just do what the parents do (usually). And I am sure you would agree since the time most of us here were kids, that children seem to get ruder and ruder as the years go by... a reflection on society in general, I think..

My point is, not everyone is brought up the same way, or to be polite. And what is polite to one is not to the other. You can't go around putting your standards on other people (as much as I want to sometimes) you will just drive yourself crazy. And I have to disagree, plenty of French speaking people say just no, or I don't want that, or wave their hand at me when they speak to me in English. I don't think it's rude, because when thinking in another language I just assume they are thinking in 'shorthand' because it's easier. I would say it's a 50/50 mix between those who use polite English and those who don't (in my own experience) I can tell if they're still being ncie because usually the face matches the tone... e.g. "No" to coffee but they are smiling, I know they are not being rude, just direct. At the end of the day she is just a child so either next time gently correct her (if in your house) or leave it alone. As someone said, it's hardly the worst thing in the world to do and if your daughter is not concerned with it then I would leave it. Teach her to decide what she will put up with and what she will not, that is really all you can do. the rest is up to them as friends.

Yes but not all parents teach their kids, cmon you only have to look at some of the adults around to know that! 'Common sense' is not so common, I'm sure the same goes for manners... Also not everything translates directly into English. I once worked with several Indian girls who were realy annoying me with "give me this" and "I want that" and when I asked them to say thank you as it was rude not to they said that's not how it's done in India, so I had to explain if you are speaking English to an English speaker it's considered rude to be so direct. They got it, and said please and thank you for the remainder of the time we worked together. But they explained that until I had said this to them they had no idea. So no, I don't think in cases it's common sense, sometimes culture/ upbringing comes into it and some people just don't know any better until you tell them. It'd be like me going to traditional dinner with Arabs and not knowing I shouldn't pass food with my left hand- I wouldn't know this unless someone had told me, and that could be considered a very rude faux pas!!

You mentioned she is from Belgium.... could it be a language difference? I.e. most French (yes, I KNOW, I do not know any Belgians) people I know are very direct and that is just how they are, perhaps it is the same for this girl, she does not know any better that being so abrupt can come across as rude, to her "I don't want" is just a statement, not a judgement on a gift/gesture, whereas for you and your daughter it is. I agree that this is a good learning opportunity for her as to how to stand up for herself if she is not happy with something her friends do and what she can say next time if it happens.

The phrase "If you don't like the answer don't as the question" does come to mind... seems you might be a little but grumpy this morning GM, going by some of your comments today...!? What are they supposed to do, blow smoke up her a#### and tell her everything will be fine? yep, way more helpful.... sometimes reality sucks but we all have to deal with it at some point. I am sure if she had said "My DH flunked a medical" then people might have worded things a little differently. For all we know she is asking about a worker she has sponsored....

I know of a Dad who does, and a guy (no kids) who does, his DW is still working for EK though, so they have 2 incomes. I'm sure it's possible but try to find as much as you can about the contract (I think what dogcatcher means is what allowances you do/don't get, if you need to pay for anything/have a bond, how rosters work etc) Since they are a low-cost, then the conditions will be different to say EK or EY. I've definitely seen them in Jacky's & Sharaf within the last week... you want either the camera connection kit or the HDMI connector, depending on the tv. Or you can buy the Apple tv thinger which does like a wifi connection to your tv (I think- perhaps one of the Apple-ites can explain it better!) I would think Jumbo & Plug-ns would have them too. Dubai Mall seems the most options when it comes to electronics. Otherwise, try JadoPado, they deliver same day and take COD or credit card. edited by SkyKitty on 20/05/2012
