I'd never seen such deep sleepers until I flew for a living. Amazing how quickly people nod off, especially when jetlagged. Another common one is literally having to drag people off because they've taken a Xanax or Ambien and haven't timed it right!! :O

Am trying to find this out also! They have the aircraft list but no program as yet. These things are subject to last minute changes and the full rehearsal is on the 12th so I suppose they will release the program at the actual show. Shame for those of us trying to plan around it! Trying to decide if I should drop a shift or not, problem is it's worth a lot of money so only want to drop the work if I will see what I wanted to see there!

I also thought "What the?" but the comments indicate that they are aiming at the 'ooglers' who come just to look. I suppose if you were in jogging clothes going for a run they'd leave you alone as it's obvious what you are doing. Maybe beach exercise is not such a big hit here yet as it is in other countries.

Still seems unfair-not being paid for working I mean-will try and stay awake for the chocolates-I am somewhat ashamed to confess I generally sleep the whole way to Australia so no wandering down the aisles-I always have to put the 'please wake me for meals' sticker on-and even then they have to shake me awake- because I am fast asleep within 5 minutes of take-off! It's pretty standard in the US & Europe... I've only been paid for working from signing in back in Oz. US crew have the same. So if you wonder why they are eagerly ushering you to your seat and asking you to put your stuff away... now you know!! :D The other day I was trying to wake a guy up, i usually put a hand on someone's shoulder and squeeze gntly to avoid scaring them.... he grabbed my arm and just about yanked me over the seat before he realised what was going on, lol...

Sorry should have said flight staff... not for all flights just during a few hours' window when they've got the mass departures taking place in between airshow stuff. Honestly no you wouldn't be bothering, if you ask when they are taking the tray you won't have to ring as they are already at your row... or later on just walk to the galley and stretch... if your crew are doing their job they shouldn't mind... you could try for a fruit platter not 100% sure but I have seen choc on those a few times... just make sure it's a FP not a raw veg or you won't get anyhting processed on it ;) Most flight staff in the middle east only get paid once the plane departs... so when you see people giving them **** during boarding know those smiles are for free! :D

Lol weird!!! Yeah lacto means there should be dairy in it so not sure why they take the cheese- having said that it can depend on where the food comes from as I have seen cheese on VL trays, def not on VG trays though... Try asking the crew am sure thye would be happy to offload it so htey don't eat it themselves! usually one or two extra trays from people who don't want to eat. Ditto on the cheese. When they come to pick up the tray just ask if there might be any left as you didn't get one on your (dairy approved!) tray!! Back to the original subject, don't worry all the airport people have to go to work early too!! grrr not being paid for that either!! haha

I wish I had that power.... my abilities only extend to sneaking in for a bit of garlic bread or a choccie every so often ;) Sadly it's not like home where the airport staff were authorised to upgrade as they saw fit... always took slight glee in upgrading a nice person right in front of someone who'd been stomping their feet and having a tanty at the counter... always drove them mad and hopefully taught the cranky ones some manners!!! :D

I really liked Jimmy Choo as well, they were giving out the scented papers at the airport awhile back. I think in Dubai it's exclusive to duty free... Anyone tried buying online & having things sent? There's a well known cosmetics website based in HK that gives free shipping- have had cosmetics sent no problems so will see if I can get perfume!!

When I was studying graphic design I never paid for tracing paper- just a roll of baking paper as another poster mentioned- just make sure it's the non-shiny kind. It's also fun to make colouring in for kids if you trace a picture in pencil, place it face down on blank paper then rub over itt o transfer it to blank paper. Kinds love doing this.

Recall after 9/11 a company made a prototype device similar to the emergency evacuation slide on planes (but a tube style) that would go ten or so floors, spaced along buildings but they could never get approval. Wonder how long it will be until they put those "human possum suits" in lockers on the roof of tall buildings? :D

I live above the 20th floor of a high rise and wonder about this. Many times the alarm goes off and we can hardly hear it inside the apartment. I've taken the stairs a couple of times ( always do this just to make sure) also as a friend who used to live in my building told me that departing residents regularly dumped furniture in the stairs! We have smoke detectors, alarms sprinklers and each apartment has a fire extinguisher, but I do wonder... Have been considering a safe but unless it's a high end one, it won't do a lot in a big fire. they're mainly for protecting from smoke/water. My sister had one which survived a fire but it was a commercial one worth a good few thousand dollars or more.... the Ace variety are really only good for deterring thieves...

I (somehow) totally forgot it was Eid and went to Dubai mall as well. was actually going to start a thread but now we have this one, well... THE BAD - The guy who took a seat on the bus from a woman holding a baby- SHAME ON YOU!!! Pretended he didn't speak English when I told him off (saw him texting in English though!) - The people with a stroller who were going against the directions of the mall staff and ramming people, then getting mad when people got angry at them, I mean really!!!! - RTA for not advising people that a) the bus location at DM metro has changed (twice in a week) and b) sending a bendy bus on the route with a faulty door, so the bus kept stopping as the door jammed open and we couldn't go anywhere. Poor driver had to walk out in the crazy traffic to come down and use the manual override. There was also NO a/c in the bus and it was very stifling- little kids were starting to overheat. THE GOOD - Thanks to the nice man in a white (Jeep-looking) 4WD in the carpark. He waved my taxi through after we'd been waiting for ages and getting nearly rammed by people behind us. If he's someone's DH, then thank you! (I did wave back but don't know if he saw me or not) - Dubai Mall for providing bottled water in the taxi line. It wasn't hot until we got to the outside part but it's a very nice gesture I don't think you'd see anywhere else So yes it was dumb of me to even go but I suppose it's something you must see once in your life, as it was just so unbelievable! After all that I didn't even get what I went there for- d'oh!!!! >_<

Hmm. Mine has had problems happening ever since I got it about 2 months ago- just the time continually becoming out of sync, lips out of sync (drives me nuts!) and shows not recording at all. Also really peeves me they don't let you series link (apparently only on Showbox which they told me I can't have yet Etisalat have it!)

Chocs I just got Walking Dead- was going to watch it for Halloween but we chickened out & watched Monsters Inc instead! :D I do like thrilling shows but on the other hand the zombie thing scares me, I'm a wimp when it comes to horror movies. ANother series I enjoyed (which both got cut short after 1 season, so kind of frustrating) were Jericho - the one with Skeet Ulrich in it- and Defying Gravity (about the space station, not the other one)

It was temporarily for Golds travelling in Business as well but that was only until the new lounge opened. Given the lounges are almost at capacity again they had to sadly cut this perk as the biggest complaints from passengers were they had paid a ticket and could not get in due to all the guests. Hopefully this will come back when the lounges get upgraded (again) alternatively if it is a really quiet time you could always try explaining the situation- they may be sympathetic if there is not a lot of people they might be able to let hubby in. It all depends on who you get of course and whether there would be any repercussion for them.

I enjoyed Game of Thrones- not for everyone however as they swear a lot and lots of 'scenes'- but the storylines are pretty darn riveting. Borgias is meant to be good also, haven't watched it yet. Loving Pan Am (not a box set of course but currently showing) was a bit slow to start but the stories are getting pretty interesting with historical events thrown into the mix. A lot of people hate relatiy tv but I like the series Guliana & Bill- they actually seem a very genuine couple who actually cares about each other (unlike some other recent examples *coughcough*Kim*cough). They are having a challenge with IVF so some people might find it interesting. Love does exist!! :) I'd be very surprised if these two split. Bill is the guy who won the original 'Apprentice' and Guliana is the lady who presents E! News.

Thank you for the replies everyone! Feeling a bit more positive about things now. Also being a bit more "pushy" with people and reminding them by text just before any planned outing in case they 'forget'- at least then I've got time to reschedule if need be- or go out by myself instead of waiting at home! Went to the mall the other night for sushi after someone fobbed me off and it was quite fun. Only problem is a shopped a bit too much.... oops!!! :D

Am definitely a night owl!!! I sleep all over the shop as I work shifts so I try to sleep when I'm tired and get up when I'm not. If I've been travelling then I might sleep for an entire day, which sucks because then I'll be up a couple of nights in a row & sleeping in the day if I'm "off".... but I wouldn't say I have a 'regular' routine. I average 6 hours which is what I can get by on as a minimum (throwback to college) but 8 is better. If I'm working nights then I will probably sleep 10hours.... Quite obvious I don't have any kids or husband!! ;) :D

Sorry to hear your sad news!! Kids are surprisingly pereptive & see through any pretence, so Ithink being as honest as possible in terms she would understand would work. E.g., "grandad's body wasn't working very well and it broke and the doctor couldn't fix it" type thing... she would understand that other things can break and stop working and can't always be fixed, so she can then learn that the same can happen to people. Yes it's sad to have to learn such things but it's a part of life. Basically they explain simply what happened, then if she asks for more details they can explain appropriate to her age level. Often the simple explanation will be enough for now and then later on she might ask more. I suppose the important thing is to reassure her that this can happen with age and that mum and dad (hopefully, inshallah) will be around for her. My father died when I was young and my mum basically just told us that daddy went to work and something hurt him and it was too much for the doctor to fix, so daddy's body stopped working like it should, and she explained that when someone's body doesn't work properly any more sometimes it's better that it doesn't get fixed at all because then they don't hurt any more. That was enough for me at the time and later on when I was older she could explain in more detail what exactly happened. This doesn't seem like it makes sense but hopefully you get what I'm saying. Just give a little bit of information and let her decide if she wants to know more. Lots of cuddles and be prepared that LO might be clingy for a while afterwards.

According to the website you have to buy in advance now as they do background/security checks. On the website (at least it did a month back) it said that a photo ID is made for each visitor. and you have to provide a reason that you are visiting (eg job in the industry etc) tickets cover all 5 days but not the trade events whcih are separate. Boeing 787 will be appearing but Boeing have not confirmed if it will open to the visitors or just on display.

Dentro, I think being raised around it makes a difference. My father was the same but my sisters & I were horrified at the thought of how animals are killed. I suppose we grew up not wanting for food, clothing etc whereas Dad had to provide his own meals and kill his own meat. If you learn that early on and go without then of course you'd appreciate it more, that's just human nature! (FYI no I am not a vegetarian now, despite my horror at seeing how animals were killed when I was 8, but I only really think that killing for food is appropriate, not for sport etc)

Sorry the runway comment was in reference to the "lots of delayed flights"/Dubai mention. It was happening yesterday so even if it wasn't the cause of your flight delay it certainly wouldn't have helped. Sounds like the Gulf Air staff need to g back to customer service school! Unfortunately, 'lie to the customer' is a game that many seem to be taught to play these days. I used to work as ground supervisor and I always made my staff tell the truth- as far as would reasonably not cause a panic/problem. If we didn't know, we would say so- we don't know anything and as soon as we do we will tell you. Even if it's just to say, we will come back in one hour, to say we still don't know anything, is better than being left for hours with no communication at all! Sadly a lot of these staff might feel as though they don't get paid enough to deal with it (sad but true). And having seen how SOME people act.... (I am sure people were very reasonable, but there is always one) as soon as one person kicks off and becomes abusive, the staff tend to shut down and run away rather than deal with it. Not saying it's right but I've observed it on many occasions. Times like these need a good manager on the ground and often at these bad times of night that doesn't happen. Sorry to hear about your experience, do let us know if you get a response from Gulf Air!!

Second the bring snacks!!! Often kids won't like the plane food (even the kids meals on occasion) and it boggles the mind how many parents do not bring a SINGLE THING for their kids to eat. Especially if they have allergies. The same goes for milk/bottles etc... most airlines carry some but during this time of year there are LOTS of kids travelling, so the priority for these things goes to small babies not toddlers. Had a woman lose her stuff at me because we could not give milk for her child. We carried both powder and the cartons of toddler milk. She refused it as her child 'did not like that' and got upset when we explained that the other milk is for people's breakfasts! It is possible to bring on liquids for toddlers, just check the rules for which airport you will leave through. The toys thing usually works too, bring something new and they will love it. Keep in mind the crew can tel lthe difference when mums & dads are trying or just being lazy, so if you're doing your best any "dirty looks" are probably imagined :P As for other passengers, some mums I know bring some ear plugs so when people give dirty looks at the crying they can offer it and say "Doing my best, try these" lol... usually shuts those people up. Kids are kids and get tired and cry, those are fine it's just the type that are allowed to run up and down the aisle with no supervision that people get annoyed with. Sounds like you are not this type so don't worry! :P

Single runway operations for a few hours. So, landings & takeoffs from the same runway, with larger spacing as required. Not sure of the exact reason but it happens every so often for maintenance. Be prepared if you are flying around the time of Dubai Air Show (13th-17th Nov) things will be single runway ops for periods of time to allow flying displays, & arrivals of visiting aircraft to take place. I think they have a big window in the afternoon to get all the flights out before they go back to using one runway. Also there's been fog very regularly s you might have noticed which always jams things up in DXB with the arriving flights being late and having a knock-on effect on the ones those planes operate afterwards. HTH

Saw a family in the mall last night push a WHEELCHAIR up the escalator- don't know what they were thinking either! Probably got tired of waiting for the slow-as lifts!!! Was interesting though, I used the feeder bus from metro to Dubai mall, an Emirati lady & her kids were on the bus, (never mind it was the ladies section) a guy came in and looked expectantly like he wanted one of the kids to get up, fair enough, but to my amusement the lady stood up and offered him her seat!To his credit he refused but she then began tsk-tsking him, 'slapping' him on the arm saying "yalla sit down" and pushed him into the seat! He had no choice but to sit there and do as she said! She spent the trip looking proudly around. I don't know if it's because she got to push a man around or if she was being deferential to an expat... not too sure but it was funny as!

And it's 25 for the "family/ladies" taxi... I didn't know this until the guy running the queue at the airport wouldn't let me use the other regular taxi. I then worked it out. But in the end, the extra 5 is fine not to have to smell the guy and/or avoid being hit on. THe ladies are always nice and want to chat about anything & everything!!! :D No wonder the metro to the airport line will never start early or run late-they'd lose all the taxi revenue! I use metro whenever possible now.

THanks guys (I mean ladies- sorry habit) Well now I'm finally getting settled here financially, starting next year I'll have some extra funds to go do things like classes, outings etc. I bought the Time Out with the visitor's guide so hopefully that will have some cool things in it to do. I guess a big thing for me is not wanting to do ALL the cool stuff as my family have not yet been to visit me & I want to save some things for when they do :) But I will try look into a class or book club as was suggested! I suppose I just have to expect this to happen until people prove themselves otherwise reliable :D

True but they still don't taste the same- I don't think all of them are made in Oz. I heard now that the rest of the world loves them they are sometimes made elsewhere as well. So I can definitely taste the difference. I also get the feeling they sit for a long time outside as they always taste 'weird' to me. Second the salami- love love love the ones from Europe & Oz but apparently it's a big no-no to bring them in? Customs have never said anything to me but it was in the book last time I checked... :o

Could you perhaps get another neighbour to ask? Maybe if it's more than one house making a complaint they may change their mind. Or get a copy of that leaflet the ministry of (i forgot what its called but i think it might be decency) used to hand out about appropriate behaviour, circle the parts applicable and slide it under the door &gt;:) At the end of the day you are not trying to get them in jail, you jsut want the noise to tone down. You have informed them that you will have no choice but to report them if the bahaviour continues, and they would be fully aware that having alcohol without a license (or giving it to guests) is illegal so the consequences of the police showing up for anything else is on their heads. Oh yes!! I had What Katy Did Next. I also got some books from my mum like Cherry Ames- (insert job here) Nurse. I think they're being re-released. Another series by the same author (Helen Wells) was the series about Vicki the air stewardess, first book is 'Silver Wings For Vicki'. Kind of like Nancy Drew/Hardy boys but set in an airline in the 50's.

I once had a college professor who called me 'Lady' (I was all of 20 at the time!) but as he was rather old school and I was in an otherwise all-male class, it was kind of fitting. He was ex-military so used to say "yes maam" to me whenever I asked him something! Some people have it as a habit I suppose. I'm used to lots of things now ('love' from the British girls, "hon/honey" from the Aussies) but I must say that "mamsirrrrrrrrr" really gets on my nerves and/or sets me cracking up!!! I always want to say, which do you think I am, a Mam or a Sir???

We had those stupid flying bugs that get in the food. I bought an ultrasonic plug-in thing from Carrefour for 50dhs and we have not seen one since!!! Mass exodus!!! :P Probably not so good if you have a pet though...

Hmm you're right I guess I just strike off those people until they make an effort to get in touch with ME.... the one girl who did turn up is a very good friend & I knew she wouldn't let me down... but she is a friend from back home so doesn't really count towards the 'new friends'. Sadly she is leaving soon too :( I see the coffee mornings thing advertised but I don't know if I'd really fit in with that- there's lots of mums/marrieds/career ladies here and I'm not really any of those... I knew when I moved here that this might be a problem, it's common in my profession as we work with different people all the time, you bond fast & become "best friends" after a few days together but you also forget each other fast in most cases... (Just FYI, no my profession is not the oldest one.... :P LOL :D &gt;:))

I tend to bring back: Clothes (cannot find many non-micro-mini or non-frumpy or non-ethnic clothes that I like) Make-up (a lot of the brands I like are not available here or cheaper elsewhere) Ditto hairspray Washing powder (ok don't laugh it helps with the homesickness lol) My favourite body scrub which is an Aussie brand Candles- sooooo expensive here Sweets/chocolate Milo (anything not made in Oz tastes *****) Tim Tams not in usual flavour (i.e. any Dark or limited edition ones) and Mint Slice Stockings (the ones here are expensive and ****, they run very easily. Just discovered Ladder Resist- awesome! Magazines (we pay about double the price for them)

It's a shame, because I really am a good friend, I just need people to give me a chance and not run away because I don't l;ike to club every weekend. I've thought of joining a sport group or something but it's hard too as I don't have a fixed schedule week to week so comitting to clubs/groups is a bit difficult. SOmeone mentioned classes at Ductac on here, has anyone been and can you 'drop in' or do you have to sign up for a whole term of them?

I know with Dubai being how it is I'm unlikely to meet a BFF, but I'd like to have a small group of friends where I can find at least one or two to meet up with when we have some free time, for movies or whatever. Seems a little bit like if you don't own a car or like clubbing people don't want to know you! :(

thing is, it wasn't meant to be a drinking thing... just some dvds and gossip. if peopel want to drink they can go out and do it. just find it really rude and it's making me wonder what is the point of trying to make friends when people act like this!!

I once saw a pregnant lady do something really funny... when a bunch of men didn't get up for her, she just pretended like she didn't see them and proceeded to make like she was about to sit on one's lap... he moved out of the way pretty fast!!! :D The other thing that really annoys me is during rush hour when people travel with their kids and each kid has its own seat while adults stand. Surely a (small child) could sit on mum/dad's knee and the others share a seat? Once they are 6 or older they are more than capable of standing up and holding on next to mum. I was always taught to stand for adults, and only sit if they said they did not want the seat. (Besides, playing 'surf' holding onto the railing was much more fun!!) :P

Just wanted to add, I always wondered why Dubai Mall didn't put in travellators for the trolleys, surely it would free up the lifts and then mums with prams could use the ramps too... ? Very odd for the world's biggest mall if you ask me! MOE has them but only one as far as I know.

Lol, sure he should feel bad like you say it's half his fault!!!!! :D A seat o nthe metro is different. it's a clearly defined and socially accepted rule to stand for a pregnant lady in a train. I'm sure the signs say as much. Not so much in the ladies' room... yet... :p Curious, if any ladies here have tried using the parents' room when they are pregnant, are there toilets in there and is there usually a line? might be another option worth considering. I used to take my nephew in there when he was too young to go on his own to the men's but wanted to go into the cubicle by himself.
