Depends, I mean air traffic can handle low visibility, it just depends if it will impact the runway operation or not (they stagger arrivals and departures since the two runways are too close between to do them at the same time) It would probably slow things a bit but I can't see it being majorly bad. I'd check with the airline website and see if there's any change on their arrival time.

Actually, looking up I don't think it's 'real' rain, more just enough to wet the road and make things a pita for driving.... :P

If you stood in DIFC with the Burj on your right, it would have come diagonally across from your north-east, travelling to your southwest (i.e. out towards CReek/old marina) Just started pitter pattering in DIFC!

Yes if you can find the metro it's very very close, it's behind the metro and if you stood on the corner you can see it. I think when walking from back of metro it's on the right, if you turn left there's a boys' school at the end of that road. So you first pass a girls' school then right after that there's a big white building with a bus shelter in front of it (mind you i walked from metro when I went I didn't drive,it was cooler then) so if you can find the metro it should be easy to find the police station

Deb, to be honest I couldn't tell you as I haven't gone there that time of year. Best thing to do is if you have access to the company system, check the loads and download the mobile program. If not, ask your staff member to check for you. I think the difference in the fare is that generally it costs less to transit a passenger than to arrive/depart one (most airports they just get boarding cards checked but not immigration etc, whereas arriving you have to check in, check passport, get to the gate, etc etc), plus people tend to spend money while in transit so the airport tends to benefit from that. It's the same for me if I went and did a transit in Oz. Guess you pay for convenience/direct access. If there were a direct Cairo/US it would probably be more expensive again than coming through Dubai...

The only way is to become an Emirates Staff... you can get huge discount and free tickets as well..... ;) If you can get a seat that is.... flights seem fuller than ever (which is good for business, of course) And to correct the assumption, tickets are discounted, not free. The only one which is, is a leave ticket which forms part of the salary package and is a requirement...

As someone who joined mroe recently than 6 years, I second all the ladies who say bring as much as she can. Sure she won't njeed it right away, but having it there as a safety net is a relief... They will get an advance but it is just that- an advance. It will be deducted from the first salaries (basic only!) in 1000dhs increments, 500 in addition is a settling in 'gift' from company to buy things like iron, toaster, kettle etc. If they are already in the apartment, great! she can then use that money to buy anything else she might need. But, I admit, first few salaries are hard. She will not get the flying pay right away, it's one month in arrears. So money for flights performed in say, September is paid in October's salary, which is near the end of every month. Good to have money for unexpected expenses. Best thing she can do, cook at home and take own lunch to college every day that she is able. There are lunch rooms where she can store in fridge and microwave to heat up. Buying food every day adds up. For example, bowl of pasta with bolognaise or chicken= 22dhs, sandwich 12-18dhs, chicken nuggets & chips= 12dhs fruits/cakes/pastries 5-12dhs, water= 2-6dhs depending on brand.... There are also water dispensers so she could bring a drink bottle and fill it before/during classes. Wish I'd cooked more in training college. She can dine out on the weekends when they are off college. NOL card is great, she can just buy one in the station, it costs I think 20dhs, 14 of which comes as credit to use on bus & metro. She can reload it at any station up to 500dhs, but as little as 5dhs a time. that was also the first thing I did when I arrived. (Does depend on location of accommodation, but always handy to have some NOL credit in case she gets stuck out at night and wants to take a metro (very safe)

I have a rule (goes for anyone but particularly for when/if dating, until the stage where we are actually in relationship)) If I text him, and don't get a response, I will text ONLY ONCE MORE if I feel so inclined, then I leave it. He has to text me first before I will text back again. So hard to do, but it works. You will be amazed how fast it will work on a guy who likes you. I am not normally one for games, but as I see it this is not a game but drawing the line of politeness and what you expect regarding contact. If he is too busy to talk to me, well then he can text to say exactly that and we will catch up later. Not leave me wondering for days on end. I know guys think differently but once they know you won't tolerate this they won't do it again. I agree with the others, take it slow and see where it goes. I think he is telling the truth re: being busy, sick, as you have just experienced yourself, sometimes you really do just forget to get in touch with someone. I've also looked at my phone and seen a text i thought had sent realyl hadnt, and made me look like a rude ol cow! :) good luck

The others have covered a lot of what the OP said, especially with regard to the ticket prices with timings/destinations etc. Bear in mind also that the system is a 'live' one... i.e. if say fifty other people are also looking for flights for your destination, and are in the process where the tickets are 'held' for a few minutes, they won't show as available and if tickets are limited they would therefore start showing the next available tier of tickets which usually cost more (supply and demand) There are also different ticket categories within the same cabins as well. LHR is a tricky one because the costs are so high. For example I once read that for a particular airline to have a landing slot in LHR they had to pay something in the region of $40mil per year, that's just to have that time slot not even taxes or anything. Then you also have to pay for gate slots (further from the terminal/bus connection equals cheaper) So yes, some destinations are more expensive than others. Anyway ticketing is very complex and I don't even understand it fully (since I am not working directly with the system) Baggage weighing often falls to the airport itself and not the airline. It can also be dictated by the originating authority of the airline. So for instance perhaps one airport allows up to 10kg, one airline lets that on, the other may be limited in its home country so must impose that lower amount everywhere. It's similar to Aussie airlines requiring infant seatbelts to be used on flights into the US, even though they are not (mandatorily) used within the US itself. (Full disclosure, yes I do work for them, but most of you guessed that already!) CA, if you are really concerned with the issues you had onboard, and are not satisfied with the response, I believe that it may be possible for you to go in person to a particular department in the HQ building and lodge a case personally. It might be worth a try. (Customer Affairs I think it is) I would also agree please don't tar us all with the same brush, since a few bad apples really do spoil the whole bunch. As a general statement, I do observe that many passengers confuse assertive behaviour with rude behaviour- and that in itself can cause problems. Some crew also have the same issue which is generally addressed by the seniors when they see it. Unfortunately there are also a minority of people who come on board looking to start an issue- mostly they are having a bad day and want to take it out on someone, unfortunately, that someone is usually us because they're confined with us for so long and also know that doing it to ground staff will only get them denied boarding. True that people in other industries have to deal with angry/rude/etc people, but having worked in and out of airlines there's just something about being stuck in a metal tube that makes people step it up a notch. I have never had people behave so aggressively or rudely toward me as I have since flying. Having said that, the majority of passengers are perfectly fine and know how to ask for what they want like adults and not resort to swearing, name-calling, spitting or slapping. Those nice passengers are ht eones who make us turn up for work in the morning. I've also met some really lovely people on flights, never seen them again but you do remember them even for the most mundane things. I have pictures that kids have drawn for me, they can be really talented and very observant about what is going on in the cabin around them (kid once drew us a picture of the 'scary man' (i.e. intoxicated & giving everyone a hard time) and us as superheros with capes taking him away from her, LOL too cute)

Maybe then you could leave them a note explaining that since your husband may be away at times and you have a little one, would it be okay if you exchange numbers etc in case of any problem/emergency, or just asking for advice about the neighbourhood/area etc... Or if there is any shop/cafe close by you could try taking baby for a walk there in the morning or afternoon, have a coffee and try talking to people who are there also? It's hard to make the first conversation but maybe others are just as shy too... good luck

Where are you getting panic-buying from? Says they want to close it to oil tankers, not other ships? I'm guessing if it happened would be a border-style setup, where they would check any ship wanting to pass and let it go if it was just trading goods?? Or is that something really dumb to think? One one hand I can see why OP may think they neighbour is mean, considering she made an effort to go and say hello/meet them. But on the other it may just be that OP's neighbour is busy and doesn't want to make friends with her neighbours (as Louise has said she prefers to do) Usaind perhaps you could try one more time, go at a time when it's not busy (i.e. not first thing in morning or dinner time, perhaps make a dish from your country and you could take it and say they are welcome to come visit for a coffee one day if they want (or leave a note if you are too shy) if they don't respond then at least you have given it a try and can move on to someone else. Try some of the mums/babies meetings on ExpatWoman as many ladies here say they are fun (I don't have kids so don't know) but am sure it would be helpful for you to make friends with other mums. Or you can take Metro to Rashidiya station then cab... the cabbies will try to look annoyed but they are getting paid so insist they drive you... they know where it is, despite any protests that they don't... IIRC correctly it's not so far from metro or police station, but sucks to walk it in this heat...

If you buy a Wii here, consider the NTSC console as those games are cheaper than their PAL counterparts. I brought my Wii from home so it's PAL but... I use a HDD to play backups of my games and left the discs with my sister in case they got lost/stolen. In any case PAL games are almost always 30-50dhs more expensive, and none of the retailers can tell me why (I know that Middle East is NTSC region mainly but if they are going to supply both because both kinds of tvs are available, I don't see why it should cost so much more for one and not the other)

I would think younger kids- Wii, if they are getting older than something like X-box... however as I see it X-box is more of a 'gamers' machine and Wii is good for everyone, even if they have little experience with games. Though Kinect may be good for that too (haven't used it)

I used to get this problem in a particular hotel, with children belonging to tour groups, always from the same place. One night I was so fed up I waited for the little wretches, door handle already turned, door unloacked, and checking thru the peep hole. As they ran up and were about to bang on my door, I wrenched it open and yelled "rarrrrrgh!" like a big scary monster and they ran away screaming! LOL... but they never did it again! Sorry can't help with the pool situation...!

whoops, I meant try that store next to Geekay, not that they are overpriced! I think it's called Games Mart. Some places have them listed online by PAL and NTSC version but it might be worth checking if it matters if mics are either version as NTSC stuff is a lot cheaper than PAL for some reason... The guys in Sharaf are often singing karaoke in slow times so they might know where to find them if they don't have them in stock ;) edited by SkyKitty on 03/07/2012

I once saw a poster at a police station here for "keep a safe distance" had to laugh really, since even the police seem to not notice cars doing this everywhere... though maybe they are worried about more important things... I know a couple of people who have bought dash-mounted cameras, they can be used to video a silly driver (forward and rear) and automatically take pictures in an impact... apparently legal if installed by the qualified people... might be worth if you drive on SZR a lot...

The airline-provided strollers are generally located in a big red box at the arrival gate, you then leave them either at departure gate or in the red box at arrivals (which IIRC is right before the glass doors where you pass through Customs right before the exit) You may get it in Business but to be honest the coat closets are generally heaving with jackets and assorted other stuff, like boxes of water & equipment so it's not a guarantee you'll be able to put it there. Also if a customer has brought a wheelchair onboard that takes priority space as the only place to put it is the coat closet. Also best to have a backup plan as it can and does change as to whether you can have it back at the gate- I know Heathrow has a habit of not letting the prams be brought up to the gate for security reasons- many airports are like this so it may be worth a call to the airport itself since sometimes change take awhile to get through to the airlines.

Do you mean the actual microphone like you hold in your hands (karaoke) or the one that lets you also chat online to friends with a Wii? That one is called Wii-Speak and you can hook up your Wii and use it like Sk**e... must admit I haven't tried that since being here. I've bought Wii accessories in places like E-max, Jacky's, C4 and Geekay games. Avoid Virgin, they are way overpriced everyday for Wii stuff. Also that other computer store upstairs next to Geekay Games in Dubai Mall (near Reel Cinema) Tip: look for a singing game, even if you don't want it, that comes bundled with a mic or two. Often cheaper than buying separate

I love Daiso as well. I will always find something I need or have been looking for... Also good for those things which in Asia are almost 'essentials' but they charge heaps for, like fake eyelashes and cosmetic accessories (probably more true for Daiso in Japan/Korea than in Dubai, as their selection seemed a lot less. Also good for home organisation stuff like containers, boxes, laundry organisers etc.. And for crafty things!

For EW? I heard it's very difficult and very expensive to get an Ipad/apple app made because of the approval process, Android apparently is less diffiuclt but then you can get a lot of average quality apps for this reason. Since EW is free to use with advertisers, it might be out of their league... But to answer the original question, it would be handy!! I've got apps for several popular websites that work really well and cut downthe eye strain that you get when reading a full size website on a smaller tablet screen.

Also a common myth is that food poisoning is from the last thing you ate. It can actually take a week or more to show up, depending on what the problem is. So when people front up a few hours after lunch blaming the plane food, in most cases it's what they ate in the last few days. I never knew this til I did a food safety course, I always thought food poisoning came on within 12 hours or so. (Of course in some cases it does, but not always)

Pretty sure the food has to be in the 'unsafe' temp zone (google, it has a pic) that's when the bugs multiply the fastest. if food is kept cold or hot enough and is cooked well then it should kill off anything in there anyway. this is why we're not allowed to let you eat after everyone else on the plane unless we can heat a still cold meal first time. No reheating from cold I'm sure stuff I've had has had bugs in it but cooking it really, really well seems to work. Also the smell test. If it smells iffy, I bin it. If it smells ok, but I'm not sure, I cook it, and see what smell it gives off while cooking. I had chicken once that seemed fine but as I cooked it my stomach told me something wasn't right. Binned it. Never gone wrong with it. Same with the milk- since the date range is so short here I go by taste/smell within 3 days of the expiry and it's been fine. Longer than that, or if it's been out of the fridge, I'll chuck it.

Most are happy to provide an iron, I ask when I check in, (if not already in the room) and I've not had to wait too long at all, alternatively consider a travel steamer, I've got one from electronics store I think it was 120dhs, Rowenta brand, good for things you can't iron. Or just a few wrinkles as you say

So do I. Have to say it's been awhile since I saw any with a face like that. I do wonder though, I smiled and said hello to a man yesterday and he gave me a look like I'd just eaten his firstborn. I'm puzzled why it's so hard to say hi back? Probably does it to everyone! My comment about being annoyed was meant be annoyed at the people who dither over what they want, since they're usually the reason it takes awhile to get what you want, not the crew who are passing stuff flat chat. I asked one of my friends about the makeup thing, she said it's like anything- up to the person to decide if it's doable for them within what the religion says. Plenty of nonspecific areas I guess.

Penny, no need for sad faces, my complaint is with the ones who make me repeat the entire exchange for their whole row, when they've clearly been watching & listening for the last 5 minutes and had plenty of time to decide what they want. Not people who might ask me a question or two about their order. If we havec300 or 400 people and every one asks me to list the whole contents of the bar cart, each seat, each row, it explains why it might take awhile to get a drink :-) Be annoyed at those people, not the crew haha. I was going to say, many beauty products contain alcohol yet a lot of muslim women havevno issue using them..?

Yes, it was in reference to how busy it is, esp on certain routes. Rude people come in all cabins, just as the nice ones do ;) After ten rows of this repetition: "Would you like something to drink? We have alcoholic & non-alcoholic cold drinks" "Coffe thanks" "Sr, this is the cold drinks service, tea and coffee will come after the meal, we have juices, soda, water, spirits, beer, wine" "I'll have juice" "We have orange, apple, pineapple, mango, tomato" "Don't you have cranberry?" "Sorry, no, just those five" "Alright I've have a soft drink then" (why cant they just say coke/pepsi etc?) "We have Coke, Pepsi, 7Up, tonic, soda, diet coke, diet pepsi, diet 7UP" "Got Mirinda?" (Crew, thinking, I would have said if I did!) "No sir, I do not have Mirinda. I can put 7UP and orange juice together if you like" "Nah I think I'll have a beer then" (Repeat process) "Okay, pepsi thanks, three cubes of ice not four and a slie of lemon" Give drink, move to next person, who has been watching the WHOLE TIME. "What do you have?" ARRRRRRGH!!!! Repeat x250 Now you see why some of us MIGHT say it's a little bit trying... LOL ;) In premium cabins they tend to tell you exactly what they want, with ice, no lemon before you can even finish asking if they'd like a drink...

Goodness flydiver, after my first JFK trip I wanted the whole bottle and no Coke!! ;) Will have to look into coconut water. Avoided it so far as not a big fan of cocount but if it's not so 'coconutty' as you say it might be worth a shot... That, or buying Cottee's cordial in bulk on my next Oz trip... oh the memories! I miss the green Coola flavour, reminds me of primary school! On the subject of Coke, I always remember how that urban myth went around that it was called Coke because it contained cocaine. But, considering that it started out in a pharmacy as a health drink, and back in those days they used to coke you up in the dentist's chair, maybe it has its origins in truth...!

Might have been because you looked the nicest... ;) All you have to do is say to the second one that someone already spoke to you about this... I doubt they were intentially 'harassing' you, probably just not telling each other one had already spoken to you and then the second... Personally I generally am guilty of asking women over men because women seem to be more sympathetic to the situation, but if someone says no of course we don't force them. Only time would be is it was a staff member using benefits in which case of couse they move...

When I've flown through Doha, I took the bus from the plane to the terminal. Then you go to the transit and take the next flight. I think all flights use the bus as there is only the regular or Premium (Biz/First) terminal in Doha. I would check if she needs to change terminals in HKG. Since HKG is Cathay's Home airport it's possible the QR flight may arrive at a different terminal to the CX flights. (Like EK at T3 and most others at T1)

I highly doubt it. Cabins are full of people from everywhere. Unless you mean staff on desks are giving preference for some over others, in which case then you should file a complaint.
