The Maldives - divine! I would also book independently (try Atol Paradise) who were very competitive and came back several times with revised prices and packages. We went all inclusive which worked out brilliantly as it is expensive and it jut took away that aspect of the spoil of the holiday,. We stayed at felithiyo wihich is a Northern Atol and everything was just perfect. We even negotiated up grading to a bungalow on stilts whilst we were there for a good price. So worth waiting and upgrading in resort.

Mine was really simple. I went to health center with 2 photo's paid the fee (100 ryals) and it was ready in 10 days for collection. This was in Al Khor but I am assuming there must be somewhere that does the same in Doha.

Way way too hot at present and Ramadam restrictions will be upon us soon. Not a great time to get a feel for the place frankly!

I lived there and know several people who do - happily! It's a well tended community, very safe ( speed limit 25km) great facilities subsidised restaurants, nice pools, gym, club house. Huge staff turnover currently in BS school but well resourced facility. Only for employees of RAS GAS. New mall I see opened with Lulu so should make shopping a bit easier although I enjoyed my once weekly drive to Doha .

I think I read on a forum post that someone always had a 'fire evacuation' bag ready in the awful event of being evacuated from their accomodaton. It made me think a little more carefully about my own evacuation procedure... I have since bought batteries for my torch and have it by my bed. I used to be in the military and we always had to put the opening of our pillow cases facing towards the door. The rationale was that if you awoke in a smoke filled bedroom you could put your hand to the pillow case and know the direction of the exit even if you couldn't see it. Also a friend who works in the hotel industry said that one a fire safety course they were told that if you take the hose off the shower or the personal shower by the toilet and put it down the toilet past the u bend and into the pipe. Here there is clear air access which if necessary you can breath. I always, always note fire evacutaion points in hotels when I stay there and as I live in an apartment I know the exact number of steps to the fire exit (again from military training). I think it is very important to consider our safety seriously. Does anyone have any other safety tips to add? http://www.wikihow.com/Keep-Safe-During-a-House-Fire edited by Sleepless50 on 23/06/2012 edited by Sleepless50 on 23/06/2012

I got mine from Bahrain optics in CC. Surely though, any opticians will make tinted lenses and replace those in sunglassses? I wanted specific Chanel ones and there was no problem. A note though that the 'reacta light types do not activate over a certain temperature (and I am not sure exactly what it is) When I was coming from UK I thought this might be the solutiion to not having to change spectacles when going from outside to iniside and vica versa. A point worth noting and looking into.

He is also an excellent massage therapist and his brother a swimming instructor (just about ticked all boxes there what talented guys they are!) For those people now finding time on their hands whilst the malls are closed what a great (and beneficial) way of whiling away those spare Doha hours... edited by Sleepless50 on 23/06/2012

Boys travelling over 18 do need an exit permit. My son (I was his sponsor) always needed one. I would go with him to immigration (as his sponsor) pay and sign the document, It was pretty simple and painfree (immigration building at airport near long stay car park. Boys/men over 18 DO need an exit visa from their sponsor. My son was here studying until he was 19 and I, as his sponsor always had to get him one issued. I am assuming son's are on family sponsorship so husbands/dads will get one as above like I did, from immigration.

How about trying Merzam Bin Mahmoud, near Ramada. Good for access to airport and central to most places. Good accomodation and well managed. Gym, indoor pool, lots with balconies, I can recommend.

We went in August last year - booked also with Atoll Paradise (who were magnificient and will find you what you want and then negotiate a better price!) We went to Felithiyo - northern Atol - breathtaking and the most perfect holiday from start to finish. Yes, I would recommend all inclusive and whilst there you can negotiate a room upgrade also - we did again for a good price so stayed in a delux villa on stillts on water. Enjoy. We are going to return this year - bliss

As I see it Qatar holdings would want to secure the right venue for both Hamleys and indeed Harrods - hence there is a real chance they will be included in this prime development site. I understood the competition was to shortlist 10 suitable venues for the project and that all the shortlisted entries I am assuming will be invited to tender for retail space. The competition was surely purely to raise the profile of Msherieb properties as they are offering such good prizes. IPADS for votes for whoever you decide to vote for (if indeed you do) I personally have given every shortlisted entry my vote...

I agree! I think any good book store would be a welcome asset to this country. I am under the impression that all the shortlisted entries will be looked at as possible retail outlets in Downtown Doha and not just the one that wins (I think that is just a huge advertising thing to bring awareness to the project.) I actually suggested several retail outlets including a leading competitor bookshop Waterstones. Just so happens that the Hamleys entry was shortlisted. I just am in support of any good and different outlets other than fast food - although a place there is already so much of that.

I agree that Hamleys in Dubai is no where near as good as the London flag ship store. (by the way I am a teacher and in no way linked to Hamleys!) From a teachers perspective I wanted to suggest a retail outlet that catered for children (and the London store has events/competitions and free entertainment), I think in Qatar it is a struggle to find good quality toys/games for children which also have an educational value. ELC does it but with also minimum stock and retail space. Mshereib are currently in the development phase of what should be a great asset in Downtown Doha and as they invited people to recommend stores they would like to see (and I was doing very 'blue sky thinking' when I entered!) Maybe they will strive to make it bigger and better in Qatar and put Hamleys firmly leading in the Middle East in Qatar... I would welcome yours and anyone elses vote. Also please do go and vote for Discover Children's Story Center by A. Sukri - that sounds like an amazing thing to include there also... Help shape Downtown Doha. Thanks

You got my vote (and many of my friends also ...) My suggestion was Hamleys and currently I am in the lead. I think there is a place for both outlets in Downtown Doha and not just more places to eat. I wish him well!

The Msherieb development project in downtown Doha is now looking for retail outlets to put there. As there is a real lack in good quality toy stores I decided to enter a competition to persuade the developers to include the iconic store Hamleys here in Doha. News is I have been shortlisted. For those not familiar with this iconic British Store it would be a huge asset in Doha. Retails all the best in educational, electronic, current trends, you name it take a look and see for yourself http://www.hamleys.com Definitely a place to while away the hours with children and adults alike and a great attraction for Doha. Now if you would like to see this store here in Doha PLEASE would you give me your online vote. If you join in you could also win one of three IPAD's so worth just helping for that. For Facebook and tweets follow http://apps.facebook.com/mdd-app/ This is the Tweet address - Shape #DowntownDoha, vote for this retail outlet Click here: http://bit.ly/GYe8yM Please help to get the stores we really would like to see here in Doha Vote Hamleys Elizabeth Holloway Thank you so much for your support. Don't forget there are IPADS up for grabs for just voting!!! (and I stand to win a great prize too!!!!) :):):) edited by Sleepless50 on 20/04/2012 edited by Sleepless50 on 20/04/2012

MIne is a perfect fit! I have had one made in the UK previously which I always woke up having spit it out in the night. For me it is his understanding of sorting out my grinding which is not just responsible for wrecking your teeth but also eentually locking your jaw and in my case causin headaches and jaw pain! I feel almost cured!

Admirals have stopped doing their buffet breakfast which used to be really nice. last time we went there before Chrfistmas the service was terrible and I complained! I think it was 120 ryals which was supposed to include a hot choice breakfast, a bread basket, fruit juice and hot beverages. Unless they have got their act together then I would not recommend. Good cheap place which is casual and relaxed in Rik's Diner (American style) and also the Sandwich Bar (British style) La Cigale do a buffet breakfast but it is also nice to sit outside and watch people (alas on the side of the C ring road but lots of nice cars pull in!) drink coffee and eat a light breakfast.

No, perhaps I did not word it correctly. It is 1,500 QR per month and for that you get 3 x 1 hr work outs per week and a 5 day written programme. So that would be 12 x1 hour sessions with trainer and then 2 where he monitors your progress, writes and evaluates your programme and advises. I think it is a great personal investment. He is ery good at motivation and most sessions exceed an hour to which he doesnt make additional charges,

Ok this is the deal for the trainer (and i can personally endorse him) QR 1,500 per month for 3 x 1hr workouts one on one and programme to include another 2 work outs independently. I have used this guy for 3 years and have had substantial results and improvement. Email me and I will send his details [email protected]

Hi, I have usedd Hamad Medical Dentist at Al KHor Medical centre using my Hamad medical card (although not admittedly in the last year as I moved into Doha) You just went with Hamad card and I think I paid 50 ryals. Service was quick, meticulously clean and the treatment very good (although I only had a check up and cleaning done) I was very happy with the service. Now on a different medicall insurance I use Qatar Lebanese Dentist Dr George or Dr Hobach. Excellent service (although not cheap my insurance pays) I could definitely recommend these dentists. Fully endorsed,
