Congratulations! We had our second boy in September - we've just about adjusted to life with two! Similarly, I had bought everything for no.1 and felt there was nothing I needed for no.2…especially since we were inevitably given gifts of cuddly toys and a few outfits. However, I did buy a couple of new vests and sleep suits (literally 2) so that we had photos of DS2 in different clothes to DS1 - they look so similar as newborns that we wanted DS2 to feel that he was just as special. You take so many photos in the first few days (we've already noticed that we aren't taking as many of DS2 as we did of DS1 at this stage) that a few new things will be nice. DS2 is now solely wearing hand-me-downs! We have a double buggy (Phil & Teds sport with second seat above/below), I feared it wouldn't be needed given DS1 hasn't used a buggy for at least 8 months (he's just turned 3), but he is loving the novelty of sitting under/above his brother and I guess he wants to have the same treatment and attention as the baby. I have to say, it's brilliant to have DS1 under control sitting in the buggy! On the odd occasion that he wants to walk it's a nightmare trying to keep him close to the buggy! Otherwise, I didn't buy anything else for no.2. I did buy no.1 a present from no.2 and vice versa which they exchanged in the hospital when DS1 came to meet his brother, that seemed to help and DS1 has been great with his brother…so far! We have had a few comments along the lines of "I want him to go back to his own house to his own mummy" but they've been rare and usually when I've been feeding and DS1 wants my undivided attention. Good luck! :)

Congratulations Sara K! Hope you're enjoying Mummyhood and lots of cuddles; great to hear you also had a positive City experience. Still waiting this end - due date in 3 days - but given DS was an induction at 42 weeks I'm beginning to think I may be going down the same path but at 41 weeks out here...sigh...so much for no.2 coming early! Can't wait to meet all the new babies very soon... :)

Glad you're both home and had a good experience at City. Did she come naturally or were you induced? Still waiting this end, discussing induction with Dr today but after being induced with DS1 I'm not so keen to go down that route until I have to... So much for no.2 coming early! Can't wait to catch up soon for a coffee and cuddle! :)

Hi, we started from once we got home with DS, we were in hospital for 3 days and simply responded to him as and when in those early days, but I'm pretty sure (hazy memory!) that we started her routine from getting home, or at least by the time he was a week old. We mixed and matched her routine with Tracy Hogg's Baby Whisperer 'EASY routine' (Eat, Activity, Sleep, You time) in the end - I couldn't bring myself to militantly wake DS as strictly as Gina suggests so blended the two women's theories. It worked for us, and we'll be doing the same with no.2 in the coming weeks... Good luck!

The epi-no should only start to be used 3 weeks before EDD, having just dug it out to check I'm now back using it (I thought I'd left it too late to be of any benefit!) with 10 days to EDD! It should then only start to be used a min. of 3 weeks after delivery (once bleeding has stopped and any damage healed) for pelvis floor strengthening. The epi-no is only guaranteed for 2 years and they only recommend you use it for two pregnancies. You need to dedicate about 20min a day to using it in those final few weeks. Here's their UK website: http://www.epi-no.co.uk/ Perineal massage (just checked my NCT notes!) can be started daily from 4-5weeks before EDD but I have read another article that says a couple of times a week from 30weeks... Hope that all helps! :-)

I used epi-no and did perineal massage with my DS three years ago in the UK and whilst I did tear upon delivery (he was a 9lb 7oz baby with a 36cm head!) the midwives reckoned both had prevented more serious damage and the need for an episiotomy. I certainly didn't start as early as 20 weeks and this time round I have only done massage - I will soon find out if that's helped but due to my scar tissue from last time I'm expecting undercarriage damage! Basically, I'm sure they both helped, but other circumstances can still lead to tearing/episiotomy - large baby, epidural, assisted delivery etc.

Hi ummzarinah, poor you, that's awful. You shouldn't be being pressurised into a planned c-section at 40 weeks. I was induced with my first son in the UK at 42 weeks - they offered from 41 but I wanted to wait as long as possible because he wasn't engaged and I wanted a natural birth, in the end I had to be induced but I felt I'd given him a chance and my wishes had been accepted. I am with an obgyn at American Hospital (I'm 38 weeks) and she has said I can go to 41 before being induced. Not once has she suggested a c-section, when I said I only wanted one as a life/death option she said that was great. She is willing to induce me as of next week, but only if I want to be induced, she is happy to let me wait until 41. No.2 is not engaged and, if anything like no.1, won't until I go into labour, naturally or induced. If you don't want a c-section then I agree with KenzaB that you should consider switching obgyn, if not hospital too. I'm shocked and feel so bad for you - I'd only ever heard people rave about Dr Elsa so I'm surprised too. It's your body and unless medically necessary you shouldn't have to undergo major surgery and 'why put yourself through the discomfort'?! A c-section is discomfort on a whole new scale!! Good luck, I hope you find a resolution that you're happy with and I look forward to hearing about your little one's safe arrival... :-)

Dr Branch is my obgyn - I'm due in a couple of weeks - and I think she's great. Not overly chatty, in fact she was pretty terse in early appointments, but I prefer the no nonsense, straight talking, lack of flannel approach. She answers my questions clearly and honestly (this is my second time so I am aware of what I want/need) and she has been nothing but great in my opinion. :)

Congratulations KenzaB, I'm so sorry to hear it wasn't a great experience, if you want to vent or get it off your chest fully then do, it's actually the best way to process what happened - feel free to PM me if that helps? Sending positive vibes...hope she and you are doing well :) No.2 seems to be making no attempt to appear this end, given no.1 was induced at two weeks over I'm resigned to a wait...sigh... Good luck everyone else who's waiting to pop!

Come on early September babies! Still not ready for no.2, have washed no.1's clothes and put cot up, but that's about it! Finally packed hospital bag today to end the denial! Guess he will make his appearance when he's ready, just not during a lesson hopefully! Am upping the raspberry leaf in the hope it might encourage him...I was induced with no.1 so really want to avoid having to go through that again. Looking forward to hearing about the first arrival... Good luck everyone! x x x

Hi everyone Just checking back in after returning from the UK, I'm sure some bumps are almost fully cooked by now and ready to appear - good luck! I've got 4 weeks to go until EDD (Sept 24th), but no.1 was two weeks late so I'm not getting too excited yet! Just starting to sort out clothes and baby items before returning to work next week once term starts... Hope everyone is well and coping in the heat and humidity; I look forward to catching up with familiar faces and meeting new ones at coffee mornings soon with new additions! :)

Really recommend Lansinoh nipple cream, it comes in a purple tube and is a miracle cure a week or so in when breast feeding hurts and you can't face it! Not sure if you can get it out here (brought mine back from UK) but you could order it online through amazon and pay shipping if you get a few other things to make it more worthwhile. I used washable Avent breast pads initially but actually found the disposable ones to be just as good and more convenient when big leaks happened due to the waterproof backing! Good luck! Relax, it's amazing how naturally it will all come. That said, I'm having minor panics about no.2s imminent arrival! :)

My Sister in Law is a dentist and says the earlier you start brushing, the better - she often has to remove children's milk teeth because they are given too much juice and their teeth aren't brushed so they have decayed :( She says that if possible, only use mint toothpaste rather other flavours so that they get used to it from the word go and won't reject 'normal' toothpaste when they're older. I use the Colgate Smiles 0-3 children's paste for my 2 year old and he happily brushes away!

Hi Everybody :) I have just moved to Dubai from England 10 days ago so trying to reach out and make some friends as I am 27 weeks pregnant (due 6 September). I already have a daughter who is nearly 11 and have been working hard trying to get her into a school which appears to be a huge task! I am completely clueless about hospitals so any advice there would be great. I have just purchased a 28wk plus package and have my scan on Saturday and then my first consultation on Monday. Don't really know what I should be expecting to happen! If anyone has some spare time and would like to befriend me please get in touch. Hi zerotrace - hope you're feeling more settled and happy with the setup? Where are you planning on delivering? I don't attend the coffee mornings midweek beacuse I'm at work - we keep asking for a Saturday one, but no luck yet! :)

Hi Sara I'm due end of September too - I'm flying back to the UK next week (with a letter saying I'm 27+3 because I'm carrying big too) and will fly back August 26th when I'm 35-+3, with a new letter from my GP issued the week before. BA are happy up to 36 weeks with a letter once you're after 28 weeks (or if you look big and you think they'll question you!). I flew around the same time when I was pregnant with no.1 on a longer flight to the US and was fine - as previous posters have said, get some compression socks, drink lots of water and get up and walk about. Totally depends how you are feeling at the time, but it's fine so long as you're comfortable. Hope that helps?

We registered our son for nursery from the UK prior to arriving - I scanned and emailed copies of his Red Book vaccination page, passport photo page etc and transferred the money. On arrival they then needed the copies of our visas etc, but it was all very straightforward... Hope that helps? :)

Or any other mall? I second MRSCB's request on behalf of many of us on the September 2013 Due date board who work and want to meet other pregnant mums but can't because we're not allowed to make arrangements for a Saturday coffee morning on this forum. Please help us - you provide a great forum which puts us all in contact, but then we can't meet up! Thank you :)

If you mean a rail to stop a toddler rolling out, we got a relatively cheap one from Babyshop in CentrePoint MOE. It adjusts a little to be as long or as short as you need and has three 'feet' which go under the matress. It's basic and plastic, but has done the job perfectly for us with a boistrous boy! Hope that helps? :)

Hi bananas I was under the impression that you can't take the Maxi Cosi Priori on board - we check ours into the hold - due to the fact it requires a normal seatbelt (i.e. with diagonal strap as well as lap) to secure it, it isn't designed for just a lap belt i.e. a plane seat belt. Here's what Emirates say: 'The car seat must be the forward facing type only and one that can be secured to the seat by the use of the lap seatbelt, and not a shoulder harness (2-point seatbelt) as per car vehicles.' http://www.emirates.com/english/plan_book/essential_information/travelling_with_infants.aspx Ring and check, but as I say we've always had ours checked into the hold... Hope this helps?

Hi I totally agree with Perkynana - shop early whilst you have the energy (and there are sales - Toys R Us/Babies R Us?)... My votes... 1. We bought a Phil & Teds Sport buggy (we were living in the UK countryside so 3 wheels and being able to go off-road if necessary was important) because we hoped to have our second sooner and it converts to a double buggy with a seat that goes either underneath or above the main seat area. It converts to lie the baby fully flat, inclined or upright. We were given a barely used Maxicosi baby car seat for which we bought the adapter frame to clip it onto the P&T buggy. We also got the P&T bassinet which clips onto the buggy to make it a 'pram' when DS was little and it doubled up as his moses basket too. I'm a big P&T fan - they're VERY robust, very durable (ours has flown all over the place, been off road a lot and 2.5 years on it's still going strong ready for no.2.) I was strongly recommended getting a P&T buggy by three different people who had two kiddies and wished they'd bought one from the outset. Negatives: it isn't that light, it's quite big/bulky (no slim umbrella folding) but airlines accept it at the door so it does go flat and the wheels all detach (you can get a travel bag to put it all in). 2. We didn't have a monitor for DS because we were in a flat and he was next door to us. I'm thinking about getting one this time round, definitely with video/image screen and perhaps the iPad linked one so it can work on the wireless...our villa is equally bunker-esque! I would love other people's opinions and views on the ipad linked monitor or other video monitors myself! 3. I used an Avent single electric pump with DS - it can be mains or battery - and it was great. I expressed for months and whilst a double pump would have been useful, a single electric one was fine given cost and the fact it would only be used for 6 months or so x 2. If you can hire one then get a double, if you're buying then a good single one made more sense to me. Hope that helps? There's such a range out there for everything and everyone has their own preferences so have a good look, read feedback and happy shopping! :)

Hi Grateful I'm at American Hospital - heard great things about Dr Braithwaite, I'm with Dr Branch there who is nice, if a little no nonsense and stoic at times! I quite like her blunt manner, especially given I know what to expect etc second time round. We couldn't choose between City and AH and only ended up at American because at the time our insurance company were in dispute with Mediclinic (City) so they suggested we went to AH. All resolved now, but we've decided to stay put. Two friends delivered there and can't praise it enough - City equally great from reviews - every hospital will have good/bad reviews because everyone is different and has different expectations. Coming from the NHS it's all fab! Best to check them both out yourself and go with your instinct. I'm 21+3, got my anatomy scan this afternoon so hopefully we'll find out what we're having - DS was a surprise but from a practical point of view we're finding out this time round, plus DH wants pink as does DS so if it's blue they have a few months to get used to the idea!!

Hi ladies I'm due 27th Sept and am currently seeing Dr Branch at American, but I might change to a Dr at a clinic nearer to where I live who delivers at City. Weighing up the hassle of getting notes and switching against driving to AH for appointments... Kellyjane & Trinity21 I teach too, and am with BUPA/Oman Insurance...not in a sparkly school though!

I took Pregnacare plus Omega and Osteocare before, throughout and whilst breastfeeding my first child, I'm currently taking Pregnacare (normal), Osteocare and a Pregnancy Omega 3 supplement for pregnancy no.2. As previous posts have said, the important thing in trimester 1 is folic acid and anything else is a bonus. Yes, you should try to get all of your vitamins from food, that's the ideal, but if you have bad nausea and sickness then a supplement helps. I decided that a healthy diet + supplement = a guaranteed way of gtting your RDA of everything either via food or pill. Everyone is different though, but as long as you take Folic Acid for trimester 1 BacktoBlonde then you'll be fine! :)

Hi Luvsherbear (& KH) I didn't get any answers to my initial post (thanks KH for yours!), but I decided to tell a couple of colleagues early so that I could quiz them about their experiences with our insurance company! Both had seen local ob/gyns at clinics (and then direct billed hospital delivery packages) so they weren't offered an antenatal package, but after talking to them about claiming back we have decided to pay the 20% at each appointment/scan/test at AH (the rest being direct billed) and then submit claim forms every month to try to get the 20% back because maternity is technically fully covered. It's worth a shot, if we get money back (which they did) then that's fab, if we don't then it's probably still better than the risk of being left with the full cost of a package at the end beacause we have a 6 month deadline for claims. Hope that helps? :)

Hello ladies! Congratulations everyone - it's great to hear everyone's different situation and concerns. I'm 12 weeks now with no.2 (due Sept 27th), DS is 28months, and due to have my scan and tests next week at City Hospital. I'm registered with Dr Branch and we saw her at 8 weeks and were happy with her no nonsense attitude and pro-natural birth approach. Currently having issues regarding insurance (I posted earlier on th emain board), but otherwise everything is straight forward. I find the whole system out here crazy - back in the UK I simply went to my local midwife unit for check-ups and then to the nearest hospital for birth where we met the midwife delivering DS at the moment of birth. None of this pressure to select a hospital and choose a doctor - choice is great, but sometimes no choice is easier! Also concerned about extra costs - I'm rhesus negative - which again wasn't an issue in the UK. I'm hopefully over the nausea, had a rough few weeks when the thought of food made me retch and nibbling gingernuts was the only way forward, and I now can't wait for the scan so that we can start telling people that all is well and so that I can stop trying to hide my mini-bump! I work so the tiredness has been difficult, especially with a busy toddler to chase after, so I can't wait for the 'blooming' phase to start! Clothes are just about fitting but I definitely have an obvious tummy already - DS was a whopper so I fear no.2 is following in his footsteps already! Hope you are all well and managing to deal with the sickness and fatigue - looking forward to sharing the coming months with you all and perhaps meeting up further down the line? :)

Thanks jojobaaklini, I'll tell her and she can see if her husband can get some when he goes back to the UK at half term, I think she was worried about them looking 'dodgy' in luggage (white powder in wraps!), plus I then saw they were no longer being produced. Looking at the other thread people have brought them in without issues it would seem. Fingers crossed he can get some! I used Bickiepegs with my son when he teethed and they were great; her son hated them before we all moved out here in the summer! Good recommendation for others to use though. edited by Slurp81 on 06/02/2013 edited by Slurp81 on 06/02/2013

I'm newly pregnant with my second child and we've just had an email through from our insurance provider saying that Mediclinic (i.e. City Hospital) is now doing direct billing again - the dispute has been resolved. Our insurance provider suggested we re-book elsewhere so we had gone to American as a result of the initial dispute but are now wondering whether to switch back to City. I would really appreciate feedback as to which one people prefer. We're booked to see Dr Branch (just checked, DH made appointment after talking to Insurance provider) at AH and Dr Philip at City - I need to cancel one of them, but am feeling very clueless! edited by Slurp81 on 03/02/2013
