I am thinking of buying an iPhone in the UK before returning to the UAE. If it breaks down in the UAE, will it still be able to be repaired or serviced even thought it was bought in the UK. I've heard that iPhone 5s can be repaired but iPhone 6 can only be repaired if it's Model A1586. I've also heard that no iPhone bought in the UK can be fixed in the UAE and I would have to post it to a friend in the UK who would then have to take it in to an Apple store and then post it back to me. Anyone have any experience with having their UK-bought iPhone 6 or 5s repaired in the UAE? I don't mean a screen-change, more like a technical malfunction.

Can't help with getting rid of the cut trees, but just wanted to say that unless you have the root system removed they will grow back. They tend to grow back even bigger than before. Thanks Nomad! I know removing the trees is a big job and the roots are the toughest part. The gardeners are coming back in a couple of days to tackle the roots. In the meantime, I need someone to carry away what's been cut so far so that they have room to work on the roots. Anybody else out there who knows who I should contact?

Is this allowed? I have a family member who is very allergic to dogs and cats - gets itchy and swollen and has trouble breathing (asthmatic), so not sure what would happen if there was a dog/cat in the airline cabin with her on a long-haul flight!

Hi, just wanted to get some feedback from American School of Dubai parents regarding what they think of the school. My child has been offered a place for Grade 1 and I wanted to get an idea of how international it feels. My child is currently at a very friendly international school (Dubai American Academy) which she enjoys and feels comfortable in. However, ASD has a great reputation so we are thinking of moving her. We're not American so I wanted to get an idea of how international and friendly ASD feels.

Try Go Sport in Mall of Emirates. I bought one there a few months ago - they might still have them.

One of the main reasons I use Masafi is because I prefer the BPA-free plastic they use - that's also why they're a little more expensive. If they use cheaper plastic, they'll lose quite a lot of their customer base, I think.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one at my wits end. I've gone to their website and placed an order online. Let's see what happens. I hope it doesn't get lost in the system... They used to have really good customer service. I'm really curious to know what's going on.

Is anyone else finding it absolutely impossible to reach Masafi on 8005455? I always used to call them on that number to arrange my water delivery. Went away for the holidays, came back 2 weeks ago and cannot get anyone one the phone at all. I have called their corporate office and they are very unhelpful - they just gave me other numbers to call but no one answers those numbers either. Is anyone else having issues with their Masafi water delivery?

How do you go about setting up the temporary guardianship in Dubai? Is it just a piece of paper with details of who should take care of your child, or is it something more official? And where do you keep the information - with a lawyer or just a friend? Finding this all very confusing.

If it's tiny holes about waist high, it's most likely your clothes getting snagged on the side of your marble kitchen countertop.

Has anyone used a company to clean the top of their villa's roof of bird droppings, etc? I've tried calling a few cleaning companies and pest control companies, but none of them will do it.

In Barsha there is ASD (American School of Dubai) and DAA (Dubai American Academy). DAA has a small Pre-KG group for 3-yr olds, but it seems to mostly be for siblings. They take a larger group of children for KG1 (4 yr olds) so your child can stay in a nursery environment or at home until they are 4 without you having to worry about them missing out on a place. Both ASD and DAA only take applications from around October of the previous year, so for a Sept 2014 application they will only start taking applications in Oct/Nov 2013. Not sure about other American curriculum schools. Hope that helps - I know it can be confusing!

I have been trying to figure out what the huge pylons with loads of wires are which cut across Dubai, straight through Umm Suqeim Rd at the big roundabout and seem to go on forever. Are they telephone wires or electricity wires? And more importantly are they supposed to be safe to live next to??? Do they emit high levels of radiation or electro-magnetic fields?? I've even seen schools close to them, and am trying to work out if it may be best to avoid those. Here's an image of what I'm talking about: http://arabiangazette.com/dubai-defers-power-plant/ Anybody actually know what they are?

It seems that the replies below have all been quite positive. My experience: I hired a full-time live-in through Howdra who was dreadful. Changed her for a new girl after 1 week. The new girl was dreadful as well - barely lasted a month. No training, no motivation, and in both cases I was not entirely sure how stable they were. Terminated the whole contract early, lost money but was relieved not to be associated with the company anymore. Maybe I was unlucky both times, but just be sure you are totally happy with whoever you interview before you hire them. The company may make you feel rushed so you think you have to take the best of a bad lot, but don't get pushed into hiring someone who is not right for your family. It's tough - good luck.

See a nutritionist who can help you with coming up with a diet that adequately replaces the food that you're taking out. A nutritionist can also explain about how to do a rotation diet and whether to use probiotics to rebuild your child's digestive system so that he may be able to start tolerating some of these foods again (maybe within a year). I've seen Belinda Rennie at Cooper Clinic and she gave me some good advice regarding my LO.

Doesn't sound so good. I was hoping to find an ER closer to home than American or City Hospitals (just in case), but I guess it's best just to stick with those two.

ok, that's good to know. does it require some kind of strong adhesive which will leave a mark (we're renting, so that's an issue for us). Ikea (I think) sell an rough edge thing you can stick to the stairs to give it grip. Its in a strip. We have it on all ours and seems to work. (Will prob fall down the stairs this eve)

good suggestion. i'm getting the impression that the main time issue is how far away your villa is from the exit, rather than there being a large backed-up queue at the exit. I've always heard you should drive to and from work/school from a considered location before moving in...but that would mean having to prob take a day off or something...

http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=176263 Thanks Sue62, I had a look at that thread because we're thinking of moving to AR, and that's what actually got me thinking about how long it might take to queue to exit.

Howdra said AED 800 for the first 6 months and then AED 1,000 thereafter, which I think is too low. Explorer said AED 1,500 which is better but I'm not sure if that's correct as it's so different from Howdra. So i just want to double-check with anyone out there who hires through Explorer.

I guess for us it's just going to be really difficult to leave her because she has become such a part of the family and my kids love her. I guess I'll have to see what immigration says - I think they might be tough about it. But I do see your point about her maybe not having many other Philippino maids to socialise with if immigration makes it hard to bring domestic workers from abroad.

I have read mixed reviews about GEMS World Academy. I've taken the school tour and I like the idea of the International curriculum. But quite a few parents in previous posts seem to be not too happy with them. Just wanted to check if things have improved over this year and if there are actually satisfied parents and children at the school?

your LO is still young. mine had the same issue (i think lots of babies do). i didn't follow any special routine. i just made sure that whenever my LO was having a nap in the daytime, i kept the curtains open and often kept my LO in the living room with light everyday noise going on around her (ie. tv, music, chatting, washing dishes,...). then at nighttime, i made sure it was dark in LOs room. eventually my little one self-regulated herself - she was sleeping through the night by 2 months (although waking for 1-2 feeds). hang in there and don't stress - it works itself out.

both maxi cosi and britax are amongst the best in terms of safety. we have maxi-cosi priorifix and tobi - both are great (priorifix is with isofix and tobi is without but feels rock solid when installed). have your LO sit in both to see which is more comfortable - priorifix is more reclined in the original position than the tobi, but tobi has more head-support. Just Kidding is really good for Maxi Cosi and are very knowledgeable. I would also be really happy buying Britax but I couldn't find the one I was after in the shops here.

i would be hesitant to order online from organic food and cafe. i love them, but you have to see what the fruit and veg look like on the day and choose them yourself because sometimes they look pretty 'tired' - at least in the greens, not sure about dubai mall. edited by solaris on 17/03/2011
