I think you have to try other IB or US curriculum schools as British curriculum cut off dates are September. When my son started shook he turned 3 in Jan and started FS1 the September after so he was 3.75 years old when he started FS1, 4.75 FS2 and 5.75 years old year 1.

Because they cap the class sizes and each class has a teacher and a TA. My son went there and we liked the school however in his last year there he was the only native English speaker in his class which became a slight issue for us. Teachers are lovely and Mr Spaans the head is great.

You have 30 days to register the birth. 120 days to get a visa here is a link with info from government website. I second baby steps. You could take a copy of your passport now with your valid visa and use that for registration. . On the growth charts the weight and height should be in the same percentile and should gain as per the chart. So if your baby's height is in the 60th percentile (which means your baby is taller than 60% of babies it's age) then the weight should also be in the 60th percentile, or thereabouts. You worry when say the height is in the 30th percentile and the weight in the 70th percentile. . I'm sorry but this really isn't true, I hope your Dr didn't tell you it was! The percentiles absolutely DO NOT need to "match" at all, think about it, people come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and the same is true for babies. My baby for example is a tall slim build (like myself and my husband) so although he has always been in the 98th percentile for length as a baby he was between the 50th and 75th percentiles. This was not a problem at all! It would also be quite normal for a "short" baby to always be in the 70th for weight but say the 30th for length etc. Can you imagine if say their was one specific weight that a 170cm tall women "should" be. The point of the charts is not at all to compare the height and weight against each other, its to see that your baby has a steady "normal" pattern of growth within each variable (although length and head circumference are more important than weight usually). You don't need to follow a chart exactly, but when you plot it over a period of weeks or months most babies will very loosely follow the same sort of pattern. So if your baby was in the 50th and then went up to the 75th then next week but didn't gain the week after and dropped back down to the 50th etc, that would be fine (because you are looking at an average pattern and there will always be growth spurts etc to factor in) vs a steady drop down from the 75th to the 30th over a period of a month or 2 would could suggest they are not gaining as well as they could be. Basically the "average" baby will stay within their centile (or wiggle in and out of the ones directly above and below) but the centiles of height weight and head size are not related, its the pattern within each centile that is what your Dr will look at. Also keep in mind that it is not a "test", where you aim for as high a percentile as possible or want to be bang on the 50th. My son is in the 98th for heigh which simply means that only 2 percent of babies are taller than him, so he is taller than average. If he was at the 50th it would mean that 50 percent were taller than him and 50 percent shorter, so he'd be "average" but if he had always been in the 25th and stayed there, he'd be showing a normal healthy pattern of growth, he'd just be on the shorter side of average. VarRaj, if you are breastfeeding, make sure your Dr uses the WHO charts for breastfed babies as its normal that they show a slightly different pattern than the formula-fed ones. You can buy your own baby scales and plot your babies growth yourself but if you do this, be sure not to weigh more than once a week at the most, because the gains are so small day by day that things like whether the bladder/bowel are empty/full make too much difference and you can worry over nothing. I did find it reassuring to weigh my baby once a week for around the first 9 week and then once a month for the next few months. So true my first son was off the chart height wise but only on the 75th percentile for weight. My daughter was always on the 75th percentile for hight but 50th percentile for weight. My son now at 7 months is 98th pecentile height and 50 percentile weight. No two babies are the same.

We've been a GEMS family both student and employee now we're not. I think both you and your friend are correct. As the years have gone by GEMS have become more corporate however they do have a reputation to uphold so level of education does have to be good. We were happy at GEMS and only moved for a better opportunity. We do notice a difference for the better in our child's education at the non profit school, and our child seems a lot more confident and happier.

What a great thing to hear!!! I just wish they spoke about freelancers who are one man shows. People like those at the craft fairs who do not have employees etc but may have something that businesses in Dubai wish to sell or buy for their own reasons. This is a third option. This man only addressed companies and branches. I did forward your link to the interview over to a woman at the freezone to ask her to listen and tell me what this means about freelancers. So many of us ladies make our own little things here and I am hoping we could continue to do so with this freezone permit. Otherwise, like he said, why bother getting one from a freezone at all? They cost 19,000dhs a year Just go straight to the DED and get a trade license and that little 200 square foot space for 24 months he mentioned. The price is almost the same (about 25,000 a year.) I will post back for sure! I understood it as any free zone lisence holder company or consultant can not do business within Dubai without getting permission from the DED and the Ministry of Economy.

We are thinking of putting our kids in Choueifat next year. I have heard academically it is GREAT but I have heard some not so good things about the character of the kids that go there. Does anyone on here have any first hand experience with Choueifat Sharjah? Please let me know your opinions! Thanks! Choueifat get good grades in their own syllabus. They put a lot of pressure on children, and it's more of a rote learning system. They are tough but also don't higher qualified teachers. To teach there you need a degree and you may not teach the subject in which you have graduated. I know a lot of people who have taught there and have said it's not a good environment.

....SO!!! All GEMS schools are UK curriculum, which I have no idea about!! "where is the desperate emoticon when you need it!!!" I am an American curriculum student, familiar with the international and have high recommendations for the IB.. but no idea about the UK curriculum! any other ideas? No not all GEMS Schools are UK Curriculum, but the better priced ones are. I think US curriculum schools on the cheap here aren't very good but know nothing about it really. Here is a link to a list of all GEMS schools so you can look at curriculum and prices [url=http://www.gemseducation.com/MENASA/parents/contents.php?pageid=54&expandable=1&parentid=2#United_Arab_Emirates'>link[/url'> Personally I would put my child in a British Curriculum school with a good rating than a US one with acceptable rating. They all do maths, science, english, social studies etc. This school is US Curriculum that received good I've never heard of it but fees look in your budget [url=http://www.daralmarefa.ae'>link[/url'> and another one [url=http://www.ppsdubai.org/index.php?v=fees'>link[/url'> <em>edited by starsouthern on 29/01/2012</em>

ISAS fees are 27 000 DHS for KG1, which next year with the girl joining school will be more than 60000 DHS school fees only! so in a couple of years plan, we will need million of DHS to afford their primary learning!!!!!! "this is not making any sense to me...since I started the search- like a year ago!!" and this is for an acceptable rated school.... We live in DSO, Willington is next door! but guess what?! they take 52000 DHS fees for KG 1 !! 60 000 for Gr1!!! and more than 96 000 for G12!!! Am I the only one that finds this ridiculous!!! before this weekend we were planing to go see nibras in DIP.... but its on the other side of the world! couldn't collect any good recommendation about the school. it was somewhere between "mmmmm" and "not so bad!!!!" Wellington DSO charge 31,000 for FS1 and 38,500 for FS2-Y6, 62,000 for years 7-9. I think the fees you are refering to are GEMS World Academy. Here is a link to their fees online. I bought mine in Spinneys but find that the second section doesn't always toast well. We had a kenwood one but that burnt one side and left the other side stale.

is this taking shoes off a cultural thing ? '>? It is also cultural I think... from memory, when growing up we always took our shoes off when visiting guests and they too when visiting our home, I still ask if people want me to remove my shoes, but don't care if people keep their shoes on in my house, and don't ask them to remove them either, if they want to though thats fine too... Where did you grow up, SAS? Hey simpleasabc! how are you? NZ but my father and many of his friends are eastern european. I'm OK, though, as you know, totally unsatisfactory :( Huge family problems so have to go to London for a bit. Hopefully won't need to return via a funeral in Athens.. And you? Did you go home for the hols? Ah, so we're thinking it may be Eastern European as well as Asian? No it's a Kiwi thing too. In the Maori culture you don't wear shoes inside. At school you used to be asked to take your shoes off before going on to carpeted areas. My husband wears his shoes in our house, it drives me crazy but for him culturally he thinks it's rude to be asked to take them off.

Congratulations! Must haves are lots of baby grows with and without feet, they are the most comfortable for bubs and easiest to get on and off. After 3 babies I've learnt not to buy too many clothes before they are born as their size isn't guaranteed? A cute going home outfit is nice for pics, With all three I couldn't live without my plastic changer that has a baby bath and shelves for nappies, clothes soaps etc. I bought it from baby shop. A good car seat. I take my babies everywhere so wanted a pram that my car seat would clip into. Cot I like the cot beds from mother care either with the cheapest mattress or a mattress from baby shop as the expensive one I think is too soft and makes noise when baby moves around. Labour: as hard as it maybe try to relax and don't forget to breathe. Have someone with you who will support you. Have a plan but come to terms with the fact that those plans could change. As long as you and baby are healthy it doesn't really matter how baby came out. Get lots of rest and sleep now as you'll never be able to sleep the same again no matter how good a sleeper baby is.

It took them an hour to get to us and it was the ambulance stationed in Emirates Living so it covered the springs, meadows, lakes, hills and greens area! When they did get there all they had was a stretcher and a thermal blanket with them no meds or other equipment for resuscitation! Thank god the life guard was so quick and one of the ladies at the pool was a nurse otherwise it would've been a tragedy!

The hospital he worked in had had a chicken pox epidemic and 2 weeks later my son ws covered in spots. None of us knew that he had been exposed.

I agree with Starsouthern and Chocs01. Really? You think it is ok to deliberately expose people to a disease without telling them? You all are clearly living on a different ethical planet than I am! australiajudy deliberately exposed her son to CP, she does not say that she deliberately exposed other people to CP. It could've been the original carrier that gave CP to everyone in the class. CP is most contagious before the spots come up so most people don't know if their children have it or if they have been exposed. The reason people expose thier own children to CP or have CP parties is because CP is a disease that is safer to have as a child. And just because someone has been vaccined against CP it doesn't mean that they can not be a carrier of the disease or not contagious to people who have not been exposed to the disease. The vaccine protects the person who has had it not everyone else. With CP the vaccine is only 80-90% effective hence why people who are vaccined can still get it just not as severely and they too can pass it on. Saying that you are on a different ethical plain to the rest of us is a bit extreme and highly jugemental. <em>edited by starsouthern on 26/01/2012</em>

My DD cried continuously for ONE YEAR! The first year of her life I was suffering, she would just cry, eat, fall asleep, wake up minutes later crying again, eat, scream... It was a painful year for both myself and my son. After she turned one she began to stop it, still high maintenance but better. I put it down to it being her personality as even now sh is very dramatic. At the time I considered: - she was not getting enough milk from me; - transferred stress (I was very stressed out, in a very tough place, I thought she was picking that up); - not enough interaction with others Best of luck to your sister - I know how stressful this can be, but it does get better. Snap it's like you had my little girls twin! She's a litlte angel now but my hubby and I still don't know how we survived that first year :)

Well until she answers you don't know do you? So don't pass judgement until that time. edited by Chocs01 on 26/01/2012 Fine, I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. That she didn't expose her child to some other kid with CP, and then before her kid starting acting sick, she didn't send him to school thinking maybe he didn't get it - and then low and behold, the whole class got it along with her kid. Also by the time the spots come out it's too late anyway as the carrier has been contagious for about two weeks before the evidence shows. Do you lock your children up the minute they get a runny nose? Maybe you should as you maybe exposing pregnant women to a disease that they may not be vaccinated against. Immunity to chicken pox is not checked in prenatal tests as it isn't really a huge issue, rubella on the other hand is and immunity to it is checked. Most adults have been exposed to chicken pox at some stage no matter where they come from. <em>edited by starsouthern on 26/01/2012</em>

Not to mention if her kid exposed some poor pregnant mom going to pick up her child. How can you all be so blase about this? Aside from causing encephalitis in a significant number of children, pregnancy complications can result as a side effect of chickenpox. Babycenter.com says that contracting the chickenpox during the first or second trimester of pregnancy puts the pregnant woman at risk of miscarriage and puts the fetus at a small risk of developing congenital varicella syndrome, or CVS. This condition causes birth defects like skin scarring, malformed limbs, an atypically small head and vision problems. CVS-infected fetuses may see poor growth and may have seizures and physical and mental developmental disabilities after birth. Yes but it is rare as most adults have either had chicken pox as a child or have been vaccined.

Definately! My DS got chicken pox last year (unvaccinated by choice and deliberately exposed). Over half of his class subsequently got it...all of whom (except 1) were vaccinated. Some got it mild, some bad. In australia the vaccine is only given once at 18 months. It is a very, very ineffective vaccine. Getting a real dose as a young child offers much better lifelong immunity against CP. And getting it as an adult is ****! Did you really just post this? You deliberately exposed your DS to chicken pox and then allowed the rest of the class to be exposed too??? Have you lost your mind? If you were a parent in my child's class, I would be positively livid! Especially if mine were one that got it bad - you know chicken pox can cause lasting damage, right? edited by glenfiddich on 26/01/2012 Chicken pox isn't a big deal if you get it as a child, that's why people expose their kids to it. It becomes a problem when you get it as a teen or an adult. My kids Dr will only vaccinate for chicken pox at the age of 12 because he says it is much better to get the disease naturally before then. To the OP yes you can get CP if you have been vaccined just not as severe.

and you need adapters to fit the Quinny, not sure if they are sold with the pram or with the seat. If bought new they come with the pram but if bought second hand sometimes the adapters get lost, you can buy the adapters from just kidding but I think they order them in and are pricey. I bought them on ebay when I had a Quinny 3 but hated the pram so sold it.
