I love living in the Ranches! Prices in Al Reem are more affordable as they are attached townhouses and square footage wise houses are smaller. Other communities are stand alone villas with bigger square footage if you look at the Hattan's for example they are massive.

Same thing happened to me with a carseat, I tried contacting the seller and they wouldn't answer the ph, msgs or email so put the thing in the bin and bought a brand new one. There is nothing you can do unfortunately, just hope the seller didn't know it was broken so they'll give your money back. In my case the seller obviously new the product was faulty.

I get the French chicken from C4-Yummy and they come in decent sizes and much cheaper than Spinneys. They will chop them up and remove the bones for you if you ask. Meat from Spinneys or Waitrose.

Keep an eye out for a deal on living social/cobone/groupon for CNB salon (Christophe Nicholas Biot) in Old town, they often have offers for hair cut, highlights and blow dry for around 350AED. Paula is one of the stylists there, she is british, qualified and has 20 or so years experience, very good hairdresser. Oh Paula just did my hair and it's fab, even after washing it home. She completely changed my colour and I love it! She did exactly what I asked for. My friend did full head highlights cut and blow dry and paid about 650aed. I was more expensive as had to have my previous colour stripped out, then half head highlights and an all over colour in between the highlights, but I tell you it was worth every penny, my hair hasn't looked so good in years!

starsouthern, do you mind if I asked how are your bills averaging now that you've moved into a 3M? so far we've been averaging 1300 including the housing fee, so around about 800-900 without the housing fee.

My husband just did ours, he needed, his passport, our passports, the original labour contract (they wouldn't accept the copy), his salary certificate, attested marriage cert and the birth certs of the kids. He was also told to take our tenancy contract by the PRO but they didn't ask for it on the day but may do.

I've used the wooden flooring from there about 5 years ago it wasn't for a house though. It looked good and I think has lasted well. Even after a massive flood it didn't look too bad, it kinked a bit but straightened out after a while when it completely dried out. edited by starsouthern on 09/11/2011

Yep it's only valid in AD. You need a DXB one if you want to use it here but don't know if your allowed two. You need a NOC letter from AD police to get a DXB license.

(LOL...[u'>massive[/u'> country and I'm hoping she's within a day's drive. ;) ) Both Dr Smylies have gone to Canberra so they're close to their four kids but not in their way  very sad to see them go they were both fab.

We changed from a profit to a non profit school and wish we had done so earlier. I felt the culture in the profit school was very competitive and unfriendly, I felt that the kids in the school were very stressed out and a lot of pressure was put on them. The non profit school is much more relaxed yet I feel the level of work they do is at a higher and better standard, competition is left for the sports field not the play ground or the classroom. I'm finding that this school's culture is about building you up rather than pushing you down (which is what was happening in our old school).

For the OP, perhaps you need to look at living in some of the " compound areas" where there is security and an laid down by laws eg Emaar areas. edited by spongemonkey on 03/11/2011 We lived in one of those areas and our neighbour was terrible. He started partying on weekends and it gradually ended up happening eveery night. Hubby used to go round and they would turn the music down for half an hour then back up again. Security would come round again they would turn it down for a while then up again. Police came several times asked hime to turn it down. One night the police were round four times. Anyway he ended up getting a promotion and moving overseas so it was all nice and quite until we moved out.

The room does get crowded when you deliver, I even had a nurse kneeling next to me on the bed pushing bubs down, which was traumatic. It was very barbaric and very primitive. This point alone sickens me to the core. I can't remember what this technique is called, but it was first used in the 19th century and has since been proved to actually be dangerous to both mother and child, increasing the risk of tearing and uterine abruption for the mum (I read somewhere that this happened in 5 out of 7 cases where the technique is used) (and not least being very painful) and can also result in trauma and shoulder/collarbone dislocation for the baby... why on God's earth are "professionals" still allowed to do it?! Cutting without consent is nothing short of a violation. Full stop. Gawd this kind of story gets me riled! Childbirth shouldn't be a fight and certainly doesn't mean that you're become a passive bit of meat on a table with no feelings or free will. I only had my mother, husband and a nurse when I was delivering my baby at one time, (this was in July) the duty Dr would come in and check me once in a while and then when I was ready to pop him out my Dr came in to catch him. They did tell me that I would have to kick my mother or husband out. I said no way and they let me be. I felt that I was taken very good care of, my baby was put straight on my chest after he came out and I got to hold him for ages they then asked my permission to take him off me to weigh him and clean him up. Which was done right next to me. Apart from the fact that I had to be induced because I was so late, the birth was fantastic.

Hiya, Sorry to put your names on the top, but I saw on another thread that you girls know about Riyadh, and a family friend is in the process of accepting a job there, she's going out on her own and working for a university there, but she's been given a budget of approx 150'000AED per year for accommodation, I saw some of the good compounds mentioned are expensive and with long waiting lists, however would 150'000AED even be enough to get into a decent compound? She said she'd be staying in a hotel apartment in the interim near Al Jazera Compound attached to some mall, will she be safe there? How is it best to get into compounds? put your name on the list before you go there or once you're there go and knock on doors? Her new employer are trying to get her in to Al Jazera Compound, is that any good? Also, is it possible to take pets to Riyadh? She has a cat who she wants to take, but is also worried about whether or not there are pet sitting facilities/catteries for when she goes away on holiday, and whether or not there are any vets. Anyway, if you could please help with those questions it would be much appreciated, I'm a bit worried about her going to Riyadh on her own as its sooo different to the UAE. Thanks :)

Unfortunately, Kingdom is one of the most expensive compounds....right up there with Arizona, Al Hamra, Cordoba, etc. We lived in Villas Rosas Al Waha and we loved it, but I've heard that it's been opened up to the locals since we left. I worked as the Recreation Director for all of the Villas Rosas compounds while I was in KSA, so I had an opportunity to see inside most of the compounds when the monthly Recreation Directors' meeting moved from place to place. Lots of beautiful compounds out there, but most do have really long wait lists and/or are outrageously priced. Eid is a good mid-range compound with nice facilities and a friendly atmosphere. Al Yamama was also nice, although the infrastructure was a bit dated. I totally agree about FAL.....wouldn't go there at all. Dogcatcher: Al Hamra was right across the highway from Cordoba. It was one of the big three that were all bombed simultaneously back in May 2003. Sadly, my friend and employer was killed in that bombing. :-( Gosh thats really scary :( I also have a friend looking into moving to Saudi, their budged for accommodation is AED150k as a single person, is that even enough to get into a compound? If they have to live out of the compound is it safe?

How long can you do a juicing programme? I was thinking of doing this myself just to give my body and organs a proper 'cleanse'. I could also do with weight loss. I heard Jason Vale is good but I dont know which programme to start. There is a 3 day one and a 7 day one, Jason Vale himself says you can't live off just juice. http://www.juicemaster.com/7lbs-in-7-days-super-juice-diet.html you should read the book though, it makes so much more sense. And you definitely do detox the system and lose weight.

You can do 3 7 or 14 days, whatever you can fit in. I recommend starting with Jason Vales "7lbs in 7 Days", though his best book to read is "Slim for Life". If you need any more details Im here with the Juicemaster team - Jason is hopefully going to make an appearance before the week ends! Watch the movie below too. OMG amazing!! The 14 day one isn't actually juice only though... the 3 day and 7 day are ONLY juice, so you have to be committed :)

Yes that is the "tradition" of Ruth Chris. I never have the butter as it is too much for me. I can't stand Seafire as it is like a huge canteen with poor service filled with tourists but that's just me. That's surprising we go to Seafire quite often, it's the place where we take all our visitors, it's never been canteen style more New York style and the service has always been fantastic. Guess we might of been lucky as it's always had a nice mix of people and not too busy.

They cook it in butter but you can request not to have it... I don't mind steak cooked in butter but this was swimming in it, the butter came half way up the steak and because the plate was so hot it was burning as I was eating the steak. The quality of the meat at Ruth Chris was really poor when I went especially for the price you pay. IMO Seafire is by far the best quality steak if you get the Atlantis meat, Asdo is also another favourite for steak and the location is fantastic. edited by starsouthern on 13/10/2011
