[b'>"If you have a well paid job you can afford to use driver service to pick your kids up from school, parent does drop off, maid looks after children for 3 hrs in afternoon till patent gets home. Parent then supervises homework and reading."[/b'> You are supposing that a well paid job is an option open to all! But many don't have one that pays for the luxury like you to employ a driver, a maid and a tutor, and telling them to go get a better paid job is like Queen Antoinette telling people who could not find bread "to just eat cake"! But that is her point. You should not think of the western expat life concept as an entitlement. Learn to accept that if you do not have a high ranking, well paid job, there's a good chance you cannot have these things. And simply be happy ith what you do have. edited by EmmaRitz on 13/01/2015 High ranking and well paid are relative terms. As is the term 'career woman' which has been referred to many times. What does that mean? What is 'well paid'? What is 'expat lifestyle'? I don't believe that having an investment at home means I am part of the 'expat lifestyle'? It was an investment when I lived at home too? How does that change matters? The point is that the cost of living is rising - we are allowed to lament that. We are allowed to think it's sad that things cost so much, and people have to work so hard to maintain a *relative* standard of living. That is allowed.

If you want to save good money whilst in Dubai, watch your outgoings, and have two incomes - and not a non existent TA salary, get a well paid second job. For child care use your maid and use your evenings / weekends wisely for homework and reading support. So many western women come over here and just stop working - you wouldn't do that in your home country, unless very wealthy, so why on earth would you do it here and still expect to save. Fine not to work and and put your priorities elsewhere but don't complain about lack of savings and life getting more expensive. Majority of countries in 'developed' societies rely on two wages coming in for people to attain the material life they want and save for the level of comfort they want in old age. Ladies - step up, re start your career with some proper personal and monetary ambition. Oh - this makes me cranky. I am stepping up. I am raising my child. I am sacrificing my own professional ambitions to do what I feel is best for our family. There are financial consequences for this, and there are huge advantages for my daughter - as I see it. In my home country, I would be considered a 'well paid professional'. Here, they'll place people in my job who are prepared to work for peanuts. No thanks. I also consider myself fortunate to be in a position to stay at home. Takes a brave woman to judge those who stay home, and equally, those who don't. Why can't women just go easy on one another. Every individual makes THE BEST decision they can for their family according to their priorities and goals. Just leave people be.

We don't get paid in the UAE. 'Our salary' (hahahaha - my husband's!) gets paid into a bank account in our home country. So we always have to think carefully about how much to transfer here to live off. We don't 'save' per se. We put all our money into our debt at home, and transfer lump sums here for spending and expenses. So I suppose for us, we just keep an eye on how long our latest transfer lasts.... depends on so many variables, visitors, festive season, etc. Being a grown up is tricky business isn't it!

The Rubella vaccine, produced by Merck & Company was taken from an aborted baby during the 1964 rubella epidemic when some mothers were advised to have abortions, rather than risk their child being born with Congenital Rubella Syndrome. It was from the 27th baby aborted and immediately dissected that the active rubella virus was finally found. It was commonly referred to as RA27/3, where R=Rubella, A=Abortus, 27=27th fetus, 3=third tissue culture explant. The abortionist collaborated with the Wistar Institute to collect the aborted babies in order to isolate the virus. The vaccine virus was then cultivated in the lung tissue of another aborted female baby, approximately 3 months gestation. Yep - no doubt about it. This is a stark reality. It's also confronting. The virus that was cultivated, has been used to develop the vaccine. Those abortions were legal. And the families would have consented to the study. They have also saved hundreds of thousands of lives. Brave pioneers. A little more to it than the original statement you dumped at the beginning of the thread.

Is it simply that more statistics are being done? Are there more diagnoses these days, whereas in our era, there was no autism spectrum, per say? I'd say yes - that's exactly the answer.

Here is some thoughts from an immunologist on the debate......*warning* it contains strong language. http://www.mamamia.com.au/news/anti-vaccination-advocate-takedown/ Mamamia has been full of anti-vacc stories today - that's where I got the inspiration for the post! Tallybalt - in Australia some day care centres won't offer places for kids that aren't fully vaccinated. That's the first place I'd be sending my little people! I also get frustrated by the 'vaccinations don't always work' argument. Yes, I know that factually it's a true statement. However, you can't report on the number of times you haven't contracted polio/tetanus/TB/measles etc now can you??

When I was in hospital after having DD I asked EVERY doctor who came into my room, what their thoughts were. No nonsense, no debate, just do it. Sorry - but I do agree that whatever point of view you want to support, you'll find support for it on the internet. But basing your opinions on 'celebrity mums' 'heaps of stories' or defunct, disproven studies written by deregistered doctors is bs.

I. I have three close friends in Australia who had sons within the same 5 year period as I did. ALL have ASD. Four people giving birth in the same area around the same period to boys with ASD is not a 'normal' occurrence. And this is the argument Jenny McCartney makes against immunization, that it is creating something that is causing or acting as ASD in children. I personally, having spent hour and hours studying all of this stuff, feel that there is far more to it than that. I think there will be far more contributing factors than simple immunization and that we are many years away from finding out what they are and many of the people they need to study (mothers, fathers, grandparents) will be deceased by the time they get a step further. So rather than searching for a cause (immunization), they need to focus on a cure. I'm glad you're doing your own research - but I think there are too many people listening to Jenny McCarthy - who is no expert. Plus plenty of studies have dismissed the original claim that links ASD to immunisations. I don't think four boys with ASD in a five year period is unusual at all though. It is a spectrum disorder, and many many more people are being diagnosed as we know so much more about it now. Many adults would probably fit on the spectrum somewhere but have never been assessed. I've often wondered about my boss....;) I'm a teacher and it wouldn't be unusual to have 3-4 kids diagnosed somewhere on the spectrum in each class. It's also more common in boys, but I digress.

Def a controversial topic but I think you should do what you think is right for you and your family. edited by twin_butterfly on 06/01/2015 You're absolutely right - unfortunately immunisation is a little bit like a team sport. If everyone is on board, it's more effective.

I've vaccinated DD but I've read far too many stories from parents about their normal babies who reacted badly to vaccines and ended up with lifelong disabilities. [b'>I also personally know many people who had ben vaccinated but still got the disease (Measles, Chicken Pox) so vaccines are not always effective anyways[/b'>. This is a topic many parents feel strongly about so you might get some really heated arguments here! This is very true - but does that mean people believe it's worth exposing their children to far more serious diseases? Also, if more people vaccinated, fewer people would get it. Sourskittleashnut - you've read the stories, but still decided to vaccinate. I guess I want to understand the people who are willing to actually not go through with it.

For me it's this quote: "At the end of your life, all you have, all that IS important is family. And just because things might be hard for a little bit, just because I might get bleeding ni$$les, be exhausted, not get sleep for another 5 years, you get this whole PERSON that is another part of your family. That’s worth anything right?" From Australian blogger BabyMac. She summarises my feelings beautifully. A whole extra person to love and be a part of your family!

We are starting to think about whether 2015 will mean baby number two for us too! One thing I do know, is that my first pregnancy, like yours, was rough! I had an elective C section in the end. I am prepared to endure a rough pregnancy and another C section in order to add to our beautiful family. We agonised over the first, so I understand all the ideas that are swimming around in your head. I too, had issues with employment etc, that I wanted sorted out before we had baby number one. But surely now, with one child already, you can see that really, they come first. All the other stuff doesn't matter. I thought it was a big deal before I had our first, but now I can see that all that stuff does sort itself out. At the end of the day: is your fear greater than your desire to have another baby? Probably not ;) Will it be difficult? Probably. Will it be difficult from a financial point of view? Probably. Will your childcare/work juggle be tricky? Probably. But you know all that already! Mums are pretty amazing don't you know? You'll be fine.

Alismum - thank you. I'll certainly be taking your research to the RTA when I (inevitably) have to call them again. If you're interested in placing a call the RTA number is 800 9090 and the EMAAR number is 800 36227. I am interested in pestering EMAAR so they go to the RTA. Further to all of that - yes, it seems to be in response to the idiot who ran into the tram. Let's focus, not on the fact that he hit a tram, but that he obviously ignored some other road rule in order for that to happen. People ignore the road rules every day in Dubai with no consequences! And finally - the light sequences are adding to the issue, traffic unable to travel north and south on the same green light. When there are no left turns allowed, I can't see why this is still an issue? edited by Stix on 31/12/2014

I second everything already said. I find it especially frustrating not being "allowed" to share personal details, whether it be through PM or whatever. EW's answer to "I've just moved here, does anyone want to meet up?" is always "go to a coffee morning, everyone is really lovely, your host will make you feel at home". Sorry - that has NOT been my experience. I've tried multiple times, and each time I'm reminded about why I vow not to go back. One of the greatest mates I've ever met here in Dubai was through a sordid, illicit, nasty little email share and then the sneaky delete. I understand safety concerns etc, but all you are doing is pushing people onto their community Facebook pages instead. If people don't come to the forum, they don't come to events, they don't visit the site, advertising isn't effective and then the writing is on the wall for EW unfortunately.
