Good idea on the new thread. My parents ended up contributing more in the end, but we started with the 'whoever you want to invite, you pay for' theory and they were happy with that ;) I had a small church too and according to my calculations, everyone we invited, would have had a seat. Turns out we still had people standing, and up in the choir loft as we had so many people who just came to see the wedding. It was so nice, as the church had a very cosy feel and I felt very fabulous when I turned around and literally saw people leaning on the balcony of the loft! With all that being said I HATE having to stand at a wedding. ;) edited by Stix on 18/12/2014

I thought so - my hubby has the drive at work today to back up onto his PC and I will reformat and start again. Can you please explain what the different formats are - what they're for? And how do I change it? From my googling, I need to be in the disc utility area or something?

There are files on it already. From a PC. Now when I put it in my mac, it seems to be read only? Formatted as NTFS - I think I need to change it - but not sure how or what to? Thanks if you can help!!

Hi Mel, Sorry you're feeling this way. It's hard to give you any advice at this stage, but I can certainly empathise. Depending on what your professional life has been like so far, you may be in a position to know whether this is 'just not right' or whether you still need to settle in. I would suggest that you'll be settling in for some time to come yet. I remember my first month working here. It was TORTURE. Unlike you, I had NOTHING to do and as a result, struggled to make connections with other people in the company, in other departments, and felt like my brain cells were dying by the minute!! The good news: within around 3 to 4 months I was LOVING LIFE! People were gorgeous, so friendly, made some wonderful friends and was really upset to leave the place when it was time to go. Finding a job in this town can be tricky, so I wouldn't just leave as it might be hard to find something else. Depending on where you work, and your sponsorship situation, your current employer can also make it difficult for you to move on.

Yes I did notice the older child had a car seat, but nothing for the baby - most odd this story! The pic is in Emirates 24/7 Poor baby lying on the drivers seat Yeah I know. just lying there - very strange!! Unless she had a car seat emergency? pollydxb - that made me chuckle.... I didn't want to. It's not funny. But that was funny. What a strange way to leave the baby on the seat too? One kick on the seat and he's on the floor!

Would someone do this?? http://www.emirates247.com/news/emirates/mom-leaves-babies-unattended-in-car-on-dubai-afternoon-2014-12-17-1.573671 This should be an offence. Not to mention - there is no car seat for the poor little guy? There are hundreds of families in Pakistan who would desperately like to hold their little people again, and these two darlings are too much of an inconvenience for their mother.

To take this thread in a (hopefully) more respectful direction: I would just like to say I am in Sydney just now and have been very assured by the responses and attitudes of the majority of people here. It is tragic beyond words that two poor hostages lost their lives, that others were hurt and all were no doubt traumatised, but aside from the cordoned off area right at the cafe, the rest of the city seems resilient and going about their business without any hysteria or unnecessary drama and just feel desperately sorry for the families and friends of the victims. As the hours go on myself and others are wondering why on earth this guy was in the community when he was out on bail for being an accessory to his ex-wife's murder and 40 something counts of assault against women. That was another shocking revelation. All in all it is desperately sad but I was confident in the response of the emergency services and the majority of the public here. Its just tragic that we had the opportunity to find out how prepared the emergency services were for this sort of tragedy. edited by 5abum on 16/12/2014 Well said, and good to hear.

Londiamond, my cousin was one of the police officers at the seige, in what capacity we wont know because he doesnt share too much of what goes on with his work. Needless to say I am proud that he was there to assist in the ending of the situation. I find your comments quite offensive and ill informed. Unfortunately the consequences of a hostage situation are tragic and families have lost children, siblings and parents and this is the same for the hostage taker, I am sure his family are filled with guilt. edited by littleone on 16/12/2014 Lolacat took my comment out of context and dramatized it against me... no surprise. My comment was directed at the joke of the hostage-taker. That he was a joke. Not that the police were. All respect for the police as he said there were bombs. The hostage taker had 6 people run to - that he was so bad at what he was doing that it was practically an open door hostage situation. edited by Londiamond on 16/12/2014 Even so, when you say he was a joke, you imply that the hostages and police were jokes too as they were unable to escape/resolve the situation. I will go further to say that he was in fact, no joke. He has brought fear and terror to a Nation. He taken a mother away from her children, and taken the life of a young man. He had the world media trained on a chocolate cafe in Sydney for close to 20 hours. International intelligence sources are analysing the events, Australians are considering their approach to refugees and asylum seekers. So perhaps, not as silly as you might think.

[b'>Did anyone read how the female victim ended up being shot?[/b'> I read that the male victim lost his life as he tried to overpower the hostage-taker, so go shot in the fight. But, I did not read any claim that the hostage-taker shot the female, only that she had been killed. Was it a case of police going in shooting, and she was hit in the crossfire? As it said they went in shooting, throwing brandades. The entire siege was farcical on the hostage-takers behalf. 6 people escaped, he took the wrong flag so one of his negotiation requests was for the ISIS flag... come on. The police could have walked in at 10am or snuck in in free clothes, armed, (apparently there was an easy entry/exit point if 6 people broke free) and taken him down. The #illridewithyou hashtag is a very lovely thing for the public to do. Just read that the poor woman died in hospital of a heart attack. No mention of her being shot. I've read that she was killed trying to protect her pregnant friend.

Quite easily. A knee jerk reaction and based on the eveidence so far this was one lone fuitcase known to authorities, not an organised terror plot. How does that change the fact that every day Australians want to ensure the muslim community feel safe? In a time where they may be feeling vulnerable and scared?

I know this thread is a little dated, but the 'tap on/tap off' is a very familiar concept to some of us, no need for turnstiles. I was on the other night and there was an inspector checking nol cards. So while technically you could have a free ride - you do run the risk of being caught.

Hi Steph, Wow - that's some experience you have there! The question might be how much do you expect to earn. There are many (unqualified) people willing to work as nannies here for a very (very) basic salary. Plenty of them seem to get jobs! It sounds like you would be an absolute dream for a family, and they should pay you what you're worth, but when there are people who will do the job for much less than I'm sure you expect, that's where you will run into problems. Why not work as a teacher?

Our rent is paid for - so I would rather pay off a mortgage in my home country (and have renters in it to help out!). That totally changes our view on things. Even with that being said, my DH and I have discussed whether we would ever buy property here, and after what we saw in 2008, there is no way. I know that crash was global - but it certainly didn't affect the housing market in my home country in the same way it did in Dubai. Any investment is a risk, however I think the oversupply issue raised above is a valid one to consider.

10 hours is on the lower end of what they're expected to get at that age but it's not too bad. I would bring the bedtime back by 5 minutes or so every couple of days. At that age, they're ready to go pretty early - so I think you can probably have more success bringing bedtime earlier, rather than getting her to sleep longer in the morning. However, if you think it's connected to your dietary changes, maybe just leave it another week or so and see how it settles down.

Firstly, I would save all communications from her as a record. Then I think you need to be clear. Explain that you are unable to meet up with her, or whatever she is after, and ask that she stop sending you messages, turning up unannounced etc. Keep a record of this if you do it by text or email. That way - if you do go to the police in the future, you can tell them that you have asked her to stop. Stalking is persistent, unwanted attention. She needs to know it's unwanted. Although it would be clear to most of us, perhaps you can't be too clear in this situation.

This is so tricky - I do feel for you. I have sleep trained my LO and it didn't take 4-5 weeks I have to be honest. So they must be really struggling, as I'm sure are you! Do you have a relationship with them already? Sounds like you might. As a new mum I just know I would die quietly on the inside if someone spoke to me about the noise my LO made, regardless of how nice they were about it. You really are in a jam here. Any chance they (or you) are going away for the festive season and can get a break? Is there any way you could go in for a coffee and mention that you are able to hear they are struggling with sleep time and have a nice 'mum to mum' conversation about how you managed with your children? That is - come at it from a constructive, helpful point of view, be her sounding board, rather than even mentioning the specifics of having your whole family up, hearing it through your wall as well as the kids etc. I'm sure she will be able to work that part out for herself. edited by Stix on 08/12/2014

Sometimes ignorance is bliss[/b'>. haha,,, i was going to say that... occasional Mc Donalds is bad enough... why would anyone want to order it when home... i suppose people r tired of hearing this... but it has to be said... Mc Donalds is NOT REAL FOOD... !! People will always make their own food choices. I find adults telling other adults what they should and shouldn't eat, especially when the advice is not solicited, very strange. PLUS - there are some times in life when only a cheeseburger will do ;)

If a baby hasn't burped after about 5 mins, they probably won't. The valve at top of the stomach closes after this time, and whatever is in there is trapped, it may open again, but who knows how long you might have to wait. Once it's trapped it now has to work its way out the other end. I've got an unopened bottle of Infant's Friend from Australia if you want to give that a try. I'm pretty sure that's to help bubba expel gas in the intestines. Expires early 2015 anyway and my little one is past that stuff I think.... I hope.... I'm in the Marina.

Londiamond that was helpful! And I am amazed the way you observe things but I understand it is your passion:) So I am throwing another question: Do you know a place where I can buy meat which has never been frozen? So that I can freeze it in my home. Cause the ones that I saw were all coming a loooong way from all over the world, I need fresh meat that I can be the first hand to freeze and defreeze it myself:) Even if meat is coming from a long way away - it was probably exported here live. I shop with a youngster - I go for the 'grab it quickly and get home before she loses the plot' shopping strategy. I always forget something, or look at the receipt when I get home and think? Oh dear, I spent 40 dhs on a roll of wrapping paper.... and don't get me started on the sweet potato incident we had this week ;) edited by Stix on 03/12/2014

Interviewers use a 'pause' strategy. They don't jump in once you've answered to move on to the next question. They will just pause and wait to see if you add anything. That's where I normally start blabbing to fill the silence. So I now conclude my responses with "I hope that has answered your question" or "would you like me to provide another example" or something like that in order to send them the message - I'm finished responding.

What is he charged with? OP may not want to reveal what DH is charged with.Does that affect her situation? Of course it does...... Depending on what he has done, affects whether people are willing to help. And sorry OP, i doubt your husband has done nothing wrong if he has been held for a year. What is is ALLEGED to have done. Advocacy is still important, regardless of how long someone has been held. It is important that people are informed of their rights, that due process is followed etc. The OP may have a language barrier that prevents her from understanding what is going on. She may not understand the charges against her husband. None of this relates to his guilt or innocence. To the OP, we don't really know what you need help with. You will need to be more specific.

Sleep Aids come in two types - muscle relaxants - that help you relax, stop the fidgeting and help you fall asleep more easily, then - 'the ones that actually affect the brain' (sorry I'm sure this isn't the technical explanation!). In order to wake up fresh, you'll want a muscle relaxant.

Inside, living in an apartment, I don't find dust to be much of an issue. Obviously, if you have your windows wide open that will be a problem. I see the air purifier as more of an issue in terms of getting the nasties out of the air if your a/c is dodgy, or there is illness etc. I would leave it till you get here. Plenty of places sell them.

I loved Di@DXB's comments the other day about when she first arrived in Dubai, in the late 70's early 80's. I would love to hear from other people who were around here at that time, or more from Di! When I first moved here in '08 my family and friends knew nothing about Dubai. There were so many misconceptions. I can only imagine what people must have thought about those early expats! I worked for a firm that opened in Dubai in the 70's and I remember thinking that the man who started the company must have been a pioneer!! I've heard about the families that left during the first gulf war, and then their return after. I find it all so interesting! Please, tell us what it was like!
