Hi. Sorry to hear it. Make sure they do the confirmatory test however as they pool bloods here so if just one person in your "batch" of pooled blood is positive, then you all get notified. Then you have to be tested again without pooling to see who is actually positive. Causes a lot of anxiety for people. Also they are on the brink of a cure from what I can see so I think the good news is you will be cured at some point. However I agree, I don't think you will ever be allowed back here. I am also surprised that your employer did not vaccinate you for Hep B as fairly standard in health care. Just make sure you independently confirm the test to make sure they are correct! Best of luck and indeed , in your lifetime, there will be a cure!

well ok, I understand where you are coming from but, they were not golden years. Maybe 20 years ago they were but we had to have a car loan and the company gave 50,000 interest free to get started. So we paid it off. As for coming debt free, we sold our house so paid off all our debts. I know things are more expensive, I do live here. Look, I do have compassion, the whole thing I have been speaking about is how very unhappy everyone on here seems...no one even looks for a bright side. IfI was wanting to come here after reading all this I also might change my mind. All I was trying to get across is there is another side. Yes the husbands are tired, mine included and because he is in his 60's a lot harder for him. He comes home now and can sleep for 12 hrs and goes to bed after breakfast the next day... yes he is exhausted, we try hard to make what we have work, it is not any easier than anyone else but we are here, we have to live here and we might as well try and find happy somehow. That is all I am saying. Am i judging? Idont think so, I am trying to counteract the negativity and the black cloud. I don't see how people can live with so much unhappiness and not try and change it somehow. My husband also had a 3 year bond. Our first actual summer holiday in 12 years was this past summer! we were stunned to say the least. I can count on him managing 2 actual whole christmas days in 12 years. We often had christmas on the 26th or 27th... I never said anyone was ungrateful. But I cannot understand why no one seems to be able to find a bright side. Right now, it is what it is :(...it cannot be changed but we can change how we deal and look at it. So I am sorry if you looked at it that way but that is not how it was meant. We try hard and have tried hard through the years here, when there were changes in the contracts, when hours were increased, when he was exhausted etc., we would discuss it, settle it in our minds and move along ...because we could not change it we had to change our mindset or we would have been pretty miserable here :( I do hope things change in the next few years for Emirates so things can be scaled back but until they do ......... So back to the poor original poster's question ... which was about the ROSTERS not about benefits or packages or anything else that the wannabes on this forum are obsessing about ... this post sums it up the best I think. On one hand, SueB is painting it all rosy but once pushed a bit she admits that, in TWELVE YEARS her husband has had ONE summer holiday! Also she admits that he sleeps for 12 hours, eats and goes straight back to bed. Great life. This apparently is your answer , OP, regarding the rosters - absolutely exhausting. The package itself is good. But your husband will pay a price. And the other part I fully agree with , is her argument to put up and be supportive. Living with an exhausted and therefore grumpy spouse day in and day out wears thin, but the pilots are the ones doing the endless hours of work and training and dealing with all the politics etc and paying the bills and if couples agree to stay here for the package, the wives need to suck it up and make the best of it. Sadly, there are a lot of jobs in Dubai that men (and women) do that involve ridiculous hours and loss of family life etc, it is not just pilot jobs. The only difference is all the time zone issues and lack of recovery sleep. But it is not a competition as to who has it worst, the OP just wanted to get feedback and every pilot's wife on here, including Sue B has warned her he will be tired. But if the OP is strong, independent, empathetic and willing to run everything in the family , they will survive. One last thing I would like to explain is a lot of people asking, if you don't like it, why not just leave? Most pilots are trapped here because of seniority in the airlines. Whereas an accountant, lawyer etc with many years of experience would be recruited into a new job at a similar or more senior level / pay level, because of his/her experience; in aviation you generally always start at the bottom. Also they spend their first 5-10 years of the career heavily in debt usually, paying a huge amount for training, flight hours, training bonds, then washing planes etc, flying in the bush for minimum wage etc etc and it is only the last 10-20 years of their career where they make any decent money . So to go back to Europe , North America etc and start as a First officer again making 30,000 dollars taxable income a year when they are 50-60 and need retirement money, is just not wise. As well, there are really not many jobs available yet. US is opening up, but only for Americans. UK is starting to open up for first time in many years.

Jet lagged? Funny, because most of the pilots I know are out on the p*ss all the time - that's why they're flippin' tired. Too much parting - the single ones anyway. Long haul is a drag, but on many flights, they now have heavy crews that rotate during the flight, plus let's face it - autopilot, auto lands etc etc. I know a husband and wife team, both pilots on the A380 fleet, they really are passing planes in the night. Humped and Dumped by a Pilot then! LOL That was a really sh*tty comment to make! Actually my father was a Manager for Emirates for over 10 years!!! I have lots of close pilot friends, so I know well what they get up to. I'm actually married to a military man, if you think pilots have it tough, try not seeing your other half for 3 months at a time and the hellish conditions he has to ut up with, not to mention putting his life on the line. Keep your smutty opinions to yourself and shut the **** up! So you can dish out insults .. basically insinuating that planes fly themselves and pilots do nothing but get ****** all the time, but get your back up when someone has a laugh. And have you mentioned to all your "close pilot friends" your opinion "let's face it- autopilot, auto lands etc..." When the sh*t hits the fan in the air (and it does, not that infrequently I might add,) it is those well trained, constantly tested (on their days "off" ) pilots who save your life, dear. You just don't know it because it is handled and all seems calm in your seat, sipping wine. That comment was highly insulting. If you are going to dish that kind of garbage out, expect to get it back.

If it is that terrible why are those of you who are so miserable still here ? I am sincerely asking as I am unfamiliar with the contracts , etc. Can't you relocate to your home countries ? Asia? Many airlines are hiring. It just does not seem worth it to be so miserable Yes it makes us wonder, seriously. I knew that the EK cabin crew leave a lot to be desired these days but the pilots and families don't like the terms here, like seriously, jog along. Good news is that soon they will replace all expat pilots with Emiratis. I presume this is your attempt at sarcasam? Maroosh is that you under a different user name?? hahahaha, clearly you have NO idea what you are talking about and clearly not a Pilot or married to one. Funniest post I have seen in a long time. No need to go to pprune as this thread is way better! ;)

I always love threads where Emirates staff and spouses roll over each other to complain. They pay half price at most outlets in Dubai, fly cheap, still get housing whereas most of us don't etc. etc. Thanks You SueB for putting it all in perspective! Pay 10-40 % off at a number of outlets, not "half price at most outlets in Dubai"... because of a plan that [b'>they [/b'>pay into monthly. Out of their own pockets. Any large group of people could get together and arrange the same thing.

Just a note on the comment"I have come to understand I cannot work for NGO's in the UAE"- that is not true. Dubai International Humanitarian City has tons of NGO's- including Save the Children and World Vision. You might be able to find jobs there. However, if your husband is not discussing the options with you , I would have issues with that too...it sets a bad precedent for the future- decisions need to be joint.

The MoH form very clearly allows you to [b'>refuse[/b'> permission for the jab, and says that you need to provide a medical report to the school if you choose this option. (A doctor signing a card with details of a vaccination already administered is a medical report). It is mandatory for every child to be vaccinated against mumps, measles and rubella. I have no idea why everyone is saying that the children will be given it regardless of whether or not it's been administered previously - does no-one actually read what they sign anymore? Actually I DID read the form we received and it quite clearly says "regardless of prior vaccination status" and "except those who have [b'>documented medical contraindication[/b'>" - so unless you have a previously documented allergic reaction, according to this form, you cannot refuse, even if you have evidence of proper past immunizations. Perhaps they will accept a record with details of vaccination already administered, but that is NOT what it says on the MOH form we were given.

Not fun, been there, done that! You have to get the constipation sorted out first or the piles will just return after surgery. Exercise (brisk walking or running) really helps, as well as 1 glass of prune juice every day and psyllium husks from the chemist. Drink lots of water. Warm water stimulates the bowels. Don't eat any rice as really constipating! Once you solve that problem, if still a problem, get surgery. I had mine done in the US so can't advise on a surgery. Good luck.

It is sad sometimes to think the sacrifices they make (kids grow up back home without them etc)- so I make sure to tip well and be nice. I always feel for the poor take out food motorcycle drivers - driving in heat, fumes and dangerous conditions. I always tip them very well. It doesn't bankrupt me and it makes a huge difference for them! I know a number of people who keep their longtime maids long after they need them, or even if they have gotten older and not as able to complete all of their previous duties- it is the decent thing to do- as they need a job and likely a whole community back home relies on them. A 50 + maid with a bad back is going to go home with little money saved and a whole lot of expectations and work thrown at them more often then not. Giving them a bit of job security for a while is a nice thing to do. They don't have the security networks a lot of us do.

I have seen rollerbladers at Kite Beach ( Jumeriah Beach Road) Sadly I have seen rollerbladers and cyclists ticketed by police at Kite Beach. They have an amazing long track but only for running, and a massive boardwalk that is only for walking. No bikes or rollerblades. What a wasted opportunity!

I would be happy to pay Western rates for a competent electrician. You call them once, they tell you what is wrong, they fix it, you pay the union rates, and you never have to call them again for the same problem. Imagine that! Here,it is endless incompetence or the old Spinneys bag and a wrench, or the standard "no problem Madam"- like if there is no problem then why the Heck am I calling you ?!! Sooo frustrating!! But I will try Musthavemaintanence- thanks GB. Fingers crossed...

Unfortunately most post never arrives. I get about 1/2 of my magazine subscription, have had many small parcels magically disappear. So it is not just medicine. Don't bother trying to track it . Always have things sent by courier. Make sure for medications that a copy of the original prescription is in the box. This method, about 80 % of the time you will get it. No rhyme or reason, rules, accountability.

Great summary Tallybalt! I have to add that I do all my produce shopping at Co-op now (but the one behind the Shangri la hotel as I am close to Dubai Mall)- if the one in Barsha is the same, then the produce quality and variety has expanded massively in the last year or two. I can get everything I can get at Spinneys including berries, and ripe avocados. The only thing missing is the packaged baby spinach and foreign romaine lettuce. They have a very large selection of organic , good quality produce too. The Australian sweet potato and pumpkin is literally 1/2 the price of Spinneys!. They have European yellow fleshed potatoes (last week at least) for less than Spinneys sells the bland white fleshed Saudi potatoes. If I wanted to, I could fill my trolley with produce of very good quality, for under 300 dhs- the equivalent in Spinneys would be well over 1000 dhs. Also the fish counter and the meat counters are excellent- they have australian filet etc. When you shop there you realize how ridiculous the markups at Spinneys are- it should be illegal. Note I still have to go to Spinneys or Parkinshop for Bread, Pork, cereal and a few specialty items. Also the COOP by Safa park is terrible- if that is anyone's only experience with Co-op, try the new ones! Welcome to Dubai, where it is impossible to shop at just one Supermarket lol! edited by Sue on 15/03/2015

Yes to clarify the Antique Museum does mostly tourist junk, but , 8 years ago anyway, way in the back (just wander around the recesses) they did have the traditional handmade ones, not in mass production. They also had the tourist junk knives too , but they did have a nice selection of handmade knives and some were old and used (in a good way if you know what I mean). Quite awesome actually. But 8 years later, who knows. And yes, Antique museum is a bit of a misnomer lol. Mostly tourist stuff (but at cheaper prices). Best of luck. Sue

Antique museum used to have a really good collection of proper Arabic knives etc way in the back near where they did repairs. Smelled heavily of contact cement/glue back there so think it probably fried a few of my brain cells looking around there. Last time I was there was over 8 years ago so might have changed. But worth a look. Google it for directions- in Al Quoz.

purchase on itunes on your computer. Then turn on your apple tv- make sure it is using the same wifi as your laptop. on iTunes on your computer, click on file- home sharing-turn on home sharing. then on your apple tv from the menu click look for your computer - it should show up- click on it and then you will see your entire iTunes menu from your laptop. Then play. I think you may need to make sure home sharing is "on' on the apple tv too- I can't remember if that is needed but check in the menu for that option on the apple tv menu. Note laptop must stay on and open or the feed will die. My kids kill me because we will be in the middle of a movie and I forget and close my laptop and have to start again. Note the movie plays on the tv, not on the laptop. Do not click on the movie on your laptop or it will play on your laptop- you just need to access your laptop iTunes menu on the apple tv and click play from there.(as above). good luck! ps we have MacBooks so it is seamless - not sure about PC's.

7 is the perfect age, she will love it. We have been twice, the second time we stayed at the Cabins at Wilderness area- it was a great area as surrounded by pine trees, camp sites, a great petting zoo, pony rides etc- was a nice peaceful relief after the busy days at Disney. I don't remember it being that much but looking online looks pricey. Even if you don't stay there, you MUST do the Hoop- de -Doo review one night- it is a dinner with a big western style show that gets the audience involved and my kids loved it so much we did it twice. You don't have to stay there to go to the review, and there is transport between all the hotels. Book the review online (now as it gets really booked up). You won't regret it. The best way to tackle Disney is get there early in am , preferably when gates open, stay till around 1 pm, go to hotel for a swim/nap/relax then go back later on for parades and fireworks etc. The thing that is the killer is if she wants autographs of the characters- the line ups can be crazy- especially if in the summer heat. Hopefully that is not high on her list. Definitely use the fast track option- it makes a huge difference. Disney is awesome, have fun. PS Universal studios is nearby and has the Harry Potter world if she is into that- but I must say it is not run as well as Disney- lots of broken rides etc. The Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey ride is the most realistic, best ride we have ever been on- but she has to be over 48 inches to ride Have fun!

I think the answer depends on how much money you have, if you are working, and it you love shopping and nightlife and bling. I prefer it 10 years ago. Traffic was much better, people friendlier, skies cleaner (no construction), affordable, enough restaurants to keep everyone happy, water was clear , view from beach was unobstructed and stunning, simple cheap and cheerful venues for families, food and fun like the country club, Jebel ali sailing club etc. You could camp on the beach in Jebel Ali, surf, kayak, windsurf anywhere without breaking the "rules". Your money went a lot further. The only thing I like better now is finally a lot of govt processes are becoming more streamlined, online, and efficient etc.

Boffin - for scientist- 7 days loves it for some reason. Panties - nasty. "helper" when people are referring to their maid. It is like they cannot admit they have a maid. Everyone does so who cares? It would be like describing your dentist as your tooth fixer or your accountant as a "money manager". Her job is a maid. Nothing wrong with that.

I was disgusted by this ad too. To suggest that everyone who dies , dies because it is their fault, is appalling. Also to suggest that their (very expensive) "screening" can prevent death in every case, is malpractice. I wasn't at all surprised however to see who put the ad on; this clinic offered my friend a bag full of "anti-aging " hormones, but couldn't provide any reliable information on long-term safety. The ad is an insult to those who have passed on, and hurtful to their surviving families.

You have to learn not to take it personally. They are completely unpredictable. Trying to sit down and chat doesn't work. Chatting while doing something really helps- just the two of you- either a long drive somewhere or having lunch together etc. But if you specifically ask what is wrong they clam up. 17 is a bit late for all this though so I would just keep an eye out for signs of Depression or school /friend issues/ substance abuse etc. If she always seems miserable then maybe ask teachers at school how she is behaving etc. If it is just saved for you- it is typical teenager syndrome. Don't put up with outright rudeness and disrespect, but give up trying to fix the grumpiness. It will pass. Generally they will hide out in their bedrooms - probably best for all of us lol. I love the quote below " she bares the burden of being the only intelligent human in a family thats only aim is to make her life miserable"- brilliant!

it is presales but it directs you to a specific ticket master site as part of the process. Maybe that is the only way you can access that tickemaster section- I don't know, but it worked. Just looked at my tickets and they are from ticket master.ae. Actually that was the great thing about Open Beach. Tons of Emirati families at beach early in the morning; groups of local kids playing football, elderly Emiratis going for morning walks. And all the rest Filipinos, Indians having a really great time playing football, Volleyball, picnicking etc, on their only day off . Hardly any tourists. That walking track is heavily used on the weekends and in the early morning hours. A true beach for "locals"- Emirati and non Emirati.

Sue do you mean the beach next to marine beach resort is going? There is a small cycle path there too? I thought the new corniche was going to run from the flagpole to burj... It's all so confusing and so sad.. Noticed a lot of work going on at various points along the beach. Adding sand and protecting the beach. Is this all the palm/new islands that are causing more beach erosion? Yes, the beach next to marine beach resort. If you look at the plans and if you go down there and see where the boards are quickly going up, it looks like the entire length of the cycle path is going to be gone. Now maybe they will keep the cycle and running path- hard to say , but if you look at the plans it is all commercial. And the boardings are going up between the road/houses and the cycle path so access is going to be cut off soon it would appear. I cannot imagine the locals with ocean facing homes are going to be thrilled, boardings going up right in front of them too. It is very sad. Greed. Harder for those of us who remembered it before any developments on the beach. The remaining beaches are going to be terribly overcrowded with Jumeirah open beach and Jumeirah beach park closing. And most have no showers or toilets either. In fact, I am not sure if Dubai Marine Beach Resort will survive this either, hard to tell from the plans, but it is in between the Pearl and the new development, so I suspect it's days are numbered too. edited by Sue on 13/10/2014 edited by Sue on 13/10/2014

Speaking of beaches, anyone know what they are doing to JBR beach? We were at Royal Meridien yesterday and half their beach plus adjoining beach in front of Ritz were blocked off and sand was being dredged and taken away by barge. Notice on barricades said redevelopment of entire JBR beach is being undertaken but no details. http://arabianindustry.com/hospitality/news/2014/sep/21/meraas-launches-mixed-use-dubai-beach-development-4822558/#.VDp6W1IcS1s There is one above too but I don't know where the Pearl will be? The Pearl is being built right beside the port down by Jumeirah Mosque. The Meraas project is going to take away the entire open beach and the running and cycling track- from the One all the way to across from the Zoo. They are boarding it up as we speak. Besides this going and Jumeirah Beach park going there is going to be so little left for the people who work to make Dubai what it is . Both these places are busy on Friday and Saturday am's - as early as 530 am with people running, swimming, having picnics- people that cannot afford beach clubs or to drive anywhere. The running and cycling track is popular too with a lot of Emiratis as well. All of this, along with the upcoming loss of sunset beach surfing is so upsetting. It reminds me every day I am down there lately of that line in that song that goes "they pave paradise and put up a parking lot". Dubai is so horrible compared to 10 years ago. edited by Sue on 12/10/2014 edited by Sue on 12/10/2014

Check American school of Dubai's website too. My understanding is that they generally pay better than most schools here.

Run as far as you can from AXA !! They used to be good but in the last year they question everything and pay nothing. Everyone I know with AXA is fed up. Saico, Aetna and Bupa are good. You get what you pay for. Now perhaps if you have premium, things get covered with Axa- but then I suspect the costs end up being the same as Bupa etc... edited by Sue on 07/10/2014
