Hi ladies It is my first Ramadan ...Any top tips much appreciated. Hi Bongo, a suggestion if you are not an arabic speaker and the pregnancy is not yet showing. Maybe you can keep a handy note (doctor's letter in arabic) with you that explains you are expecting so that if needed (being questioned by someone who may not be an english speaker) you are able to explain to them & they wont be offended or in worst case, you fined for breaking the law. Reason I say this, was during one ramdan, an expecting friend of mine was having a snack in her car and was fined for doing so, even though she tried to explain she was expecting and had to eat. Unfortunately she had the bad luck of having met with a policeman who did not understand her... hence my suggestion.

Angel joy, I too am trying to read up and embrace my naturally curly hair. Spend my whole life till yesterday just combing it with a fine brush and tying it up... boooorrriing! I know :O I do like the round curls look that I've seen women sport, but never had the guts to try them out for myself. Guess its now or never :) Let me know how it works for you. Alismum, thanks, I shall try the gatsby wax... maybe a small container to see how I like it and see if it works. Unfortunately, my latest haircut (which was yesterday) is really short, and DH thinks the curly look makes my already round face look even more round :( I am going to have to give it more length and re-do the styling again in a month or so, as soon as its grown an inch or more. Even though I would like to leave it free like those photos, I would still have to tie it up for a few more weeks though but in the meanwhile, your tips will help me to learn how to keep the curls in my hair as curls and not flat limp hair. :) Guess, with everyones hair being unique, I could use all the tips I can get and find out what works bet for me :) edited by sumi on 28/06/2013

Thanks Alismum, I have seen the Gatsby brand... their gel actually. Is the gel the same as wax? I have used the Gatsby gel before and I am a bit worried that my hair would look kind of too glossy/oily? Alismum, could you tell me what your routine is? Do you apply the gel after a hair wash, towel drying & detangling it? Sorry, the most I have styled my hair by myself, is to comb it and apply gel... when I was in college. Now 15 years later I have no clue as the only thing I do is just comb and tie a ponytail. :( edited by sumi on 28/06/2013

Any idea where there are classes near Bur Dubai where we could go that is not too expensive? Something like 400 for 8-10 classes? Enough to learn basic swimming so as not drown in slightly deep water or hotel pools deep end ?

I have been to two of their branches. I go to the smaller of the Khalidiya branches. Love the atmosphere there & the staff, very friendly and I enjoy going there. Though I would not say the same for the electra branch which is actually closer to my home but the staff is unbelievable & arrogant!

Thanks for the reply Feefmick. Will keep your suggestion of increasing the incline in mind the next time I have a treadmill run. I think I will keep to the outdoors then and maybe when its hot outside and I have long runs, take the treadmill with an incline. Joining running groups will not work for me just yet as I am in abu dhabi and with a school going DS at home, my only time for runs are at 7 in the morning... most have their meetings in the evenings :(

I have a question for endurance runners (those who do 10ks, HM & marathons) regarding your training. 1. Do you train on the treadmill or outdoors most of the time? 2. How many km/miles do you run per week indoors and outdoors? 3. Does running on the treadmill help your training or would you prefer to stick to outdoors only if you could but rather climate and other conditions are the reason you run indoors. 4. Has ANYONE here run a HM or a Marathon after training solely on a treadmill? I for one find I can maintain a sustained amount of energy and pace running on the treadmill, but put me on the pavement outside and a few mins down I would have slowed down to a crawl. An additional question for heavy treadmill users: I may consider getting a treadmill, especially for days when I cant go out and stuff, I am planning on getting it second hand, so what would you check to be sure the treadmill works ok especially in a second hand machine?

Thankyou SueB. and its for my son not daughter :D I am trying to take my time in this, cause well, cant make a wrong decision and then turn the poor thing out just because we were not prepared. I had a chance to get a lovely older kitten last week (which was used to kids too) but I had to turn it down cause DS was running a high fever and still is and there was no way to get a new member in the house at a time like that especially considering DS needed all our attention. I am thinking about 6 months and older would be an ideal age for the young cat and would really appreciate any info that I should keep in mind. Have never had a cat & a kid in the house before together so... :)

We have sort of decided on a cat, or an older kitten, so that DS and the kitten can grow together if all is well :). As I had my first kitten well after I turned 20, I would much appreciate any tips from other mums who have young kids and kittens so as to ensure that DS & the kitten gets off on a good start. edited by sumi on 19/01/2013

It would be really hard to get a legitimate copy now as I was in the same situation an year ago and never got it myself. :( Another suggestion would be, if you can borrow a friends system, sign into the app store with your ID and purchase a copy of Mountain Lion. Create a bootable disk out of it and then use that to do a clean install of Mountain Lion on your system. Do remember to check the specs of your system against the sys. requirements for Mountain Lion before you upgrade though, some features are not supported.

Hi LDC & Delighted, Sorry was busy for so long never had the chance to check back. :O Thanks for the replies. I shall check out Hash House Harriers group but for now I have come up with a more portable solution... gravel in a sand box and run in place ;). Well it helps, the rest of my barefoot runs are in the corniche. LDC, There is a cycling track on the corniche too, but its strictly for cyclists :(. Bab al shams is way too far for me so guess that wont do... But thanks all the same :)

Thanks blondie, but I will have to wait till I am there next weekend maybe? :( and Dramaqn, thanks for the tip, I just sent them a message. Hopefully they may have it. On the upside, I have found the book, or rather the e-book at www.pdfbook.co.ke (seems guests can download 1 book per day without signing up) so was surprised. However nothing beats having a book in hand and reading it, as DS has the iPad forever. So while I shall console myself with the e-book for now, I will get the proper book if I find it. :)

...Can you walk away and leave it with them to deal with? I'm afraid not :(. I do not necessarily have to invest in him, but his dad told me that I would have to make the final call. I am the only one in the entire family who is in a field closest related to him. I am in photography. My family is especially close to his dad. His dad is my mum's brother, however my DH and his dad are very very close. So in more ways than one, I am obliged to either say "no" or "yes" since his dad specifically asked me :(.

He also needs to be aware of the legal ramifications of printing certain things and possible law suits. This could wipe out any profits ( LOL) in one sweep. I am almost tempted to ask him to read this entire thread :D but I shall refrain myself.

...Don't pass any of this info on to him, this is what you should expect to see from him and any Business Studies GCSE student could write one. If he really won't quit, take his business plan to a bank and see what they make of it. Business is about tough knocks and it seems he wants to be cushioned by his family's finances as if it all goes wrong there will be no come back on him except for a failed project and a slightly bruised ego. lol... :) Lol :D However, at the moment for me its a 'lesser of two evils' situation... either I call him on the phone and talk to him (or rather he talks, cause the conversation will end up being one sided knowing how these things go :() OR I send him an email, get his reply (which I already know will be of no use based on the overall look of the emails received so far) and then with that tell him straight out, NO.

...The fact you're on a forum asking us women for all HIS research says a lot - he should have approached you with a proper business plan if his idea had any chance of getting off the ground... I agree Dangerous Blonde, his business plan is lacking in anything and everything and right now I am in the process of creating a well researched questionnaire to send him and ask for his concise reply. I am hoping it will stump him and he himself will realize how silly he is being right now trying to do this when he has no clue what he's even talking about. My sisters and I have been discussing these last few days about it and we all agree nothing good is going to come out of this except for a hole in our pockets. His dad has already told him 'no', however his dad wants me to listen to him (as I was his guide sort of in helping him choose his courses) and he wants me to decide if he (the dad) should support him or not.

It is a very competitive market and almost saturated in some countries. This is going to be in India, and he plans to get the first publication out in jan 2013, and pay us back in 5-6 months or so he says...:( Most magazines that get past the first year barely make it and fewer get through the second year... ...[b'>[u'> his idea for the magazine is unique, [/u'>[/b'>... Did you say what it was? he want to make a ... "Point taken which is why i didnt mention it at first... So removing it :) " sigh... I am trying to be very tactful in telling him this is NOT going to work as he has no clue! But he keeps insisting that all the faculty in his college & friends say it will. It even makes me think, are they saying it because he has a dad who's "working in the gulf" so is a rich kid or something kind of impression... I'm not sure. However how much I tell him he keeps saying everyone else thinks its a good idea and its driving me nuts trying to convince him cause he's trying to do the same to me... aarrgh!!! But I dont buy it, I cant' buy it... at the very most I can say is "go do a digital magazine and if it clicks after maybe 2 years we'll think about it."... edited by sumi on 18/09/2012 edited by sumi on 18/09/2012

And if you still insist, do a digital magazine first and then if that starts to click think about the print..." sigh...:( edited by sumi on 18/09/2012

Hope it works. Otherwise my second option I guess would be ADCB and Emirates NBD. Thanks again :D

yes, we got ours from dragon mart.. I think the shop no. was GAK01. 14 We bought the HDF panels, transported it ourselves to abu dhabi (where we stay) and got another party to set it up for us (big mistake). However remember to buy the skirting and let the panels have space at the edges, cause if you do not leave space, during summer its going to expand and you would feel as though your flooring is floating in places. Not nice at all. :( So buy them and get them set up by the same company. Even though we are happy with the panels themselves and the shop we purchased them from, the other company crew who set it up ruined it. As we are in abudhabi, getting the shop to transport it and install it was working out to be very expensive so decided with the other crew whose contact we got from Dubizzle.com... an abdul karim and his team... dont use them.

...Also at 800 Dhms a time they would have to work miracles. ouch! thats super expensive. I have just about managed to convince DH to shell out about 500+ for asics or saucony... if I were to ask him for another 300 more, think he would have a faint! Maybe next year (2014) when I have perfected the art of running :) A lot of people buy the barefoot shoes but still heelstrike, which can cause even more, and sometimes worse injury. A good book to read is Born To Run by Christopher McDougall. :) I saw the video based on the book in youtube a few months ago and its really mind blowing! I have been trying to do a forefoot strike, but do end up feeling like a horse... (the scene in the movie, Black Beauty, just after beauty wears the saddle for the first time, and is taken to ride, you see him stepping out one foot at a time, thats the feeling :) ) I did notice that trying an all out run in a forefoot strike does not get me anywhere... however trying to jog and then increase the number of steps and speed from the jog helps to keep in forefoot mode longer... still figuring it out though... *hope I made some sense*

After getting your gait analysis, why not think about getting either a pair of Vibram Five Fingers or Newton's which are for 'barefoot' running. This should help with your plantar fascitis as you don't land on your heel. VFF's are available at Athlete's Foot and Newton's at Adventure HQ in Times Square. Good luck with your training! Thanks Bundles, but I heard somewhere that I should avoid barefoot due to the plantar fascists? Not sure though... :( I was even initially misdiagnosed with tendonitis by one doc and then as I had no relief after almost a week got a second opinion and told it was plantar fascitis and maybe a bit of tendonitis... and given silicone insoles to walk with. I am open to trying anything thats good and comfortable for my feet and in helping me complete my training and the half marathon... but just dont want to make a wrong choice... Have you had any personal experience or someone you know might have had? regarding this please? Would love to know more... edited by sumi on 09/09/2012

It's just too bad all the sales have ended :( Asics had a sale during ramdan just before I left on vacation, but I didn't know what shoes to buy and DH felt it was an unnecessary expense as I already had my Adidas duramo... Anyway havng watched me limp in pain with plantar fascitis and now with me signing up for a 10k & a half marathon, DH seems to be convinced though he was still shocked at the price. Now I feel like crying... Aarrgh!

The other thing you could do (not sure how ethical it is) is get Athlete's Foot to diagnose your gait (that's if you trust them to do that!) and recommend a shoe and a price, then come home and research on the net to check that: a. they are recommending the right shoe for your needs b. Look for an alternative Asics for your gait. Lol! :) considering the price we are paying, I guess we could be excused for that.. though I would have to leave DH outside the store as he does not like to inconvenience the sales people and then walk out without buying. But knowing the "knowledgable staff here" we cant be blamed.

I am shopping for a pair of good running shoes that I hope to use in my daily walk/jog learn to run routine. Plan to do a 10k in November and a half marathon in feb. I already have an adidas that is ok, but I think I need a dedicated pair of running only shoes for my feet. 4 months ago injured my left foot, plantar fascitis... so dont want a replay of that and really need to find the right shoes to help. I am considering asics or saucony shoes as from what I read they seem to be the topper in running shoes. So even though the investment is a bit steep, having already suffered a foot injury, prefer to get the best for my dear feet. [i'>Anyone knows of any store in dubai that actually [u'>'KNOWS'[/u'> how to check the feet and will put some effort into helping me find the right kind of shoes for my feet and stride and not just overwhelm me with sales talk? :( [/i'> What are your experiences ladies please, runners especially? edited by sumi on 09/09/2012

Anyone interested to join the Rak half marathon (21k) on Feb 15th and looking to train with a buddy? I am located within the main city limits, and take the corniche as my training route. As I work and have a 4 yr DS, I schedule my runs in the mornings after 6:15 am (DS leaves for school) till 8:15 am (need to be at work at 8:30). I am more of a jogger / walker and hope to up my fitness by feb 15th with a 4 days a week training plan. I am also hoping to run the abu dhabi striders 10k OR the 10K dubai women's run on Nov 9th too. So if anyones interested please post here and we'll see how we can contact each other and plan this out... edited by sumi on 06/09/2012

Thanks for the headsup :) I guess with the right mindset and proper training I can do it. I have a good pair of crosstraining shoes from adidas, but would get myself more proper running shoes in November once I am more comfortable. But I am doing this...atleast I feel less nervous now and besides there is 4 hours so if not run, I can surely walk and cover the distance and finish it. I think my priority is not to finish the race within the cut off time than to get better timing. I will go for better timings in my next half marathon :)

I am really worried about being the slowest and last person to finish... I hope I am not sounding like an idiot, but the RAK marathon starts at 7am and the cut off time is 11am. I know I can for sure complete 21k in 4 hours walking, but I am trying to do a combo of speed walk/jogs/short runs to try to finish faster... hopefully in 3 hours with the 5 months training time I have? For sure I wont be able to run the whole 21k. :O I feel a bit intimidated looking at previous years marathon photos, all those really fit and conditioned athletes... Hope I wont stick out like a sore thumb :O. But I really want to do this. Anyone ever felt this way before training for a half marathon? Or am I just panicking unnecessarily?

Hi michamen, Thanks for your reply. I did a quick google on the miCoach zone after your post but decided that the HRM with dongle for my phone was better for me as I want the continuous audio training and feedback, more than visual feedback. Well so I finally purchased it this evening. The miCoach ANT+ HRM and the miCoach CONNECT for iPhone (180Dhs + 180 Dhs= 360). Got home and I was really nervous as I set it up. (You know the feeling... till it works you are afraid maybe one of the components that you picked up might be wrong or something). So finally set it up and YAY! it worked! I guess I was so excited/nervous that my heart rate was 100! (usually my resting rate is about 80-90, if I remember correctly.) So tomorrow I am starting the assessment workout and starting the 5K plan as per the miCoach website plan. really excited. :D edited by sumi on 25/03/2012

Hi everyone, thanks for the feedback. I have almost made a decision to go with the miCoach as it seems the most feasible financially. Really can't stretch my budget :( I also went to a store selling Polar and Adidas and checked out what they had. If not for my budget, polar would have been it. However still have not been able to convince DH why I need a HRM to workout... Or rather why spend 500 on something that measures my heartbeat... He would rather I go to a gym for a month for that amount :D Anyways, he has sort of agreed, because of my relentless efforts, to go upto 400. On the upside, read a lot of great reviews about the micoach and even wrote to the Adidas micoach support about my needs. And they replied (*plesantly surprised*) :). Since I have the iPhone, I need actually to only buy the heart rate monitor and the additional dongle (micoach Connect) to connect the phone to the HRM and I am good to go with almost the same functionality as the micoach pacer bundle. Cost: 360dhs. So DH is happy and I too am happy :) Going to the store this evening to pick it up. Will let u know how it goes. :) edited by sumi on 25/03/2012
