I just received further clarification, - the Export Health Certificate from MOEW costs 400 and I can get that from them. I also need to get "Veterinary Certificate for Import of Pet dogs into India" (which will be signed by a Dubai vet) also endorsed by MOEW. Does anyone have any ideas regarding how to do this?

Thankyou for the reply Lovingtsesun. :) I spoke with KHDA and was told that the school would have to initiate the procedure and the KHDA would approve (or not) on a case by case basis. So I guess I'll just have to try based on how which school I enrol him into.

I liked the travel smith inflatable ones, but doubtful if shop and ship can get them to me before I travel. Travel socks will be on my list of things to buy and it will help and maybe pick up 2-3 inflatable pillows so that I could stack them up as required. I just wish inflatable footstools were easy to find here in UAE. Most I found online, requires me to buy an inflatable sofa with it

Thank you Cherpie, we are coming to Dubai this weekend and will surely drop in at Tchibo. Hopefully the sale is still happening this weekend as well. Daza, I guess what we have now, might be adequate if it gets cold in Auckland. So will get more appropriate wear for Queenstown. The snow park does have clothing rental, so will keep that as an option incase what we get from here proves to be inadequate once we are actually there. Mumto2, thanks for the tip about fleece sweater. I was under the impression it wasn’t warm enough, but will keep a look out for that as well, especially for DS. Mannikat & Mommypie2015, Will check out sun & sands at Outlet mall. We do hope to visit the Outlet mall and Tchibo so hopefully will find what we need at good prices.

SamCT & Buddha, Thankyou for your replies. Sorry I didn't get back earlier. While looking for cheap and practical options I came across KiwiComboPass and contacted them for a self drive itinerary highlighting our points of interest. It was just becoming too difficult trying to work it out myself even with google and posting on few other forums to help. So they suggested an itinerary starting morning of 24th July (Auckland) and ending 31st August night (Queenstown). We will land in Auckland on 23rd early morning and return from Queenstown on August 1st noon. They would also help in booking accommodation and car rental for the entire trip and even reservations for each attraction if needed. @SamCT, Yes, its is more of a drive through the whole country to take in the sights and scenery in general. Focussing on DS so we can visit a few things that would interest him and LOTR locations for me. The drive itself is for DH. @Buddha, That sounds a lot like driving in India minus the potholes & pollution :). DH loves driving in India compared to Dubai. He says theres more happening on and around the roads. So hopefully, though slow, it would be an unforgettable experience *positive hopefully* We shortened our points of interest to: Auckland - Butterfly creek (Priority- The Dinosaur kingdom. rest time permitting) - Museum of transport & technology Rotorua - Waitomo caves, Ruakuri Cave, Aranui Cave - Hobitton Tour Wellington -Old St.Pauls -Cable Car -Carter observatory Blenheim -Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre Christchurch -Air Force Museum Christchurch Wanaka -Puzzling world Others -One family horse trek experience en route -One snow field /basic beginner ski experience en route -One lake cruise (optional time and cost permitting) edited by sumi on 26/03/2015

Thanks for the reply Buddha. We have so little time and I want us to see as much as possible in that time. Probably won't manage both North & South, but still want to try. I am trying to persuade DH to let us have 10-12 days if possible, but with the Australia trip we may not have that many days. It would be great if we can drive around, but we are also considering bus or train travel as I do not want DH to exhaust himself driving.

Thanks for the reply SAMCT. :) Yes it is a lot of travelling. :( Trying to see as much of this beautiful country as we can in the short time we have. Im trying to workout a simple trip but if it does not work out, stick to just north island as you said. A user on another forum recommended snow in Ohakune and the Tongariro National Park. And to drive up the mountain approx 20/30 mins for snow.

Thank for the reply buttonmoon. Does the M400 come with an inbuilt him on the watch itself, or does it read the heart rate only with the chest strap? You said this is your third polar HRM... how long did they last on average or did you just upgrade?

Thankyou BellaUK. I too just read up on the HRM accuracy issue from just the wrist without the chest strap. :( Gaah! Wish there was a way I could get accurate readings without a chest strap. NorthernLights, thank you for the reply and the link to the review. I see the fitbit HR does not sync with the Apple Health app as per that review, but if it syncs with Runkeeper, that would be fine as run keeper in turn syncs with Apple Health. I am a bit confused. - Primarily, I need the HR feedback while Im running, and it would be great to have it on my wrist than having to hold up my phone or wait for audio feedback. - Also I need the battery life and readings on both the watch and the HRM strap to be reliable. That was my biggest issue with the Adidas miCoach as the readings from the HRM strap became erratic within a month of starting to use it on a new battery sometimes. - I had also been considering getting the Apple watch, then decided against it as its first gen and would probably have a lot of issues to iron out. and for probably less than half the price I can get a more sport specific tracker. I am using the runkeeper app now and it says I should be able to use: 'iPhone 6 should work with any Heart Rate Monitors that follow the BTLE standard. Notable HRMs in this group include: Polar H7, Wahoo Blue HR, Mio Link, and Zyphyr.' Also I think most of the wristband trackers will sync with runkeeper too.

I am looking for a daily activity, running and HR tracker and was considering the FitBit Charge HR as it tracks everything direct from the wristband without the need of an additional HR monitor chest strap etc and it would sync with my iPhone. Ideally, I would like to wear it 24/7. Previously I have used the Adidas miCoach, but had issues with the HR monitor battery dying out soon and giving me erratic readings if the chest strap was not properly fit. Also I couldn't wear it the whole day. Anyone has any experience with this particle model of Fitbit Charge HR or any other similarly featured reliable wristband?

Thankyou for the replies Nomad & Fairydust. I don't know about importing, its not something we have considered at all. The most we have talked about along those lines is exporting the dog if we have to leave the country. It is a vicious cycle I guess... people buy then abandon, or breed and sell and those get abandoned. The lucky few get to the shelters and adopted and still few have a lifetime home. We visited a pet shop yesterday. It was terrible! there were mostly cats but there was a young lab and a young maltese there. The maltese looked so hopeful when we walked in, following our every move (inside its glass cage) and as we walked out of the shop if followed us, looked on and then realising we were leaving just flopped down there looking at us. I almost burst into tears and told DH lets just not visit another pet shop again! The place was stinking but 'appeared' clean, if you know what I mean. We are still going to keep looking, if we can find one to adopt it would be perfect, but if we would have to pay 'something' as long as its not over the top, we might consider it. I'll be honest, we will try not to buy from these shops as a few did approach us, but we politely declined. However, by the looks of it, we may end up *buying* eventually, most likely from someone who has an unwanted litter cause they didn't neuter in time or I guess the local breeders whose pups will eventually end up on the selling list anyway. Atleast if we take it, it would be one less puppy living in uncertainty anyway. I contacted pethabitat and they had a 7 month old who had been abandoned by its mothers owners (they did not abandon the mother, just the puppies). It eventually contracted ear infection & skin problems. Pethabitat nursed it back to health along with the other puppies in the litter and are selling them off. We might pay it a visit, but are worried they are slightly larger than the size we are hoping for but we are going to keep our mind open. edited by sumi on 23/10/2014

Does anyone know any proper 'authorised' pet shops we could check out too? How can one tell if a pet shop is authorised to sell pups/dogs or not? Adoption centres don't seem to have any really small dogs, and being in an apartment I don't want to take on a dog who is bigger.

Check out the rescue organisations: K9, Animal Action Abu Dhabi, Scads, SNiff, Dubai Animal welfare There was an influx of small dogs needing homes not so long a go. Contacted them, but most of them already got back saying that at the moment they don't have any small dogs... :( Anyway no rush, we'll just wait for the right little guy to walk by... and keep looking till he/she does. :) edited by sumi on 22/10/2014

After almost an year+ of deliberating, we have decided that a dog and among dogs, a normal (NOT mini) Yorkshire Terrier would be the ideal new member to our family of 3 living in an apartment and would continue to do so in the long run. Checked out all the usual places online, but most of them have yorkies imported.. meaning most likely puppy mills. If anyone knows of someone needing to provide their young terrier a forever home, please do post here. An older yorkie is fine too as long as its just slightly older. :) Details about us: We live in an apartment and both of us adults have had cats and dogs pretty much throughout our childhood and adult life. So we know the care & work involved. :) Our son, he's 7, is loving and caring and has been asking for a sister specifically, but a brother would do too. ;) The puppy/dog would be home alone maximum for 3 hrs a day (but usually lesser) 5 days a week. weekends he/she would be with us incase we travel around. Ideally would luv to have an opportunity to meet him/her once or twice so that we can be sure he/she is a match for our family as much as we are for him/her. Also this would hopefully make the move to a strange new place less stressful.

hmm, guess its another vacation travelling with the full car seat then. If I can't be sure it will be ok for him or if it will stay inflated no point in getting it just yet. Thanks ladies for your opinions, but I guess I'll just wait a bit more till he is slightly heavier at least.

Mine is about 3 or 4 years old now and it's never deflated. It's true that they do move/slide around...DS is coming up 10...and has done since he was about 6 years old. I did take DS's full car seat onboard once (that was enough!). I have to argue at check-in to get it on the plane (luckily I'd printed off all the relevant pages from the EK website to wave under the check-in staff's noses. The BubbleBum gets deflated when we arrive at the airport and put in a suitcase pocket so it's easily accessible at the other end. Thanks Sanddy_Dogg :) Thats great to hear. I guess it deflating is partly based on luck. Considering the portability when travelling its tempting to buy, but if its one that deflates that I unfortunately get, its going to defeat the purpose. I plan to also contact the local site here to see what they have to say about it. Have you travelled with a booster seat? I will be travelling on etihad and hoping to carry the booster seat as hand baggage. Ideally I would like to use it as soon as we land and board the cab at our destination airport. Suggestions?

I found one thread about the Bubble bum but it was not informative enough. Has anyone used it long term? I mean in terms of over a period of two to three years (on and off that is not daily of course)? I read amazon.com reviews on it and ratings of 1&2 mostly complained of it deflating after two weeks and sliding around in the car when the car turns etc. It had plenty of ratings of 4 & 5 also of course. :) My DS is 6 now and FINALLY 15kg (and 104cm height and yes our entire family is small)and I want to get him this for our vacation this July. I plan to order it from amazon as its half the price of here along with a seatbelt pillow for him to lean his head on. Last question: Forgive my ignorance but I have NEVER seen anyone travel with a car seat on flight. How do you travel with a car seat OR booster seat on flight? Is it hand baggage? do you pack it separately? Last year I carried our car seat in a suitcase just for the vacation. I have heard it can be carried otherwise, but even though I trust our airport here, I was not sure the destination airport staff would treat it well and would probably damage it. This time however since DS is in the right height and weight, was considering carrying the Bubble Bum OR/AND the (detachable) booster seat of our car seat with us for longer drives. edited by sumi on 12/04/2014 edited by sumi on 12/04/2014

Hi brit2texan, I think its best you see a Gynaecologist first as she/he will help to ascertain if yo would need to meet with a fertility specialist. Unfortunately, I can't guide you on a Dr. as I do not know any US/UK Drs here. Hope some of the other ladies on here can help you in that regard. Good luck.

DS school closes on March 10th and then reopens on April 1st and I have been running from pillar to post trying to find out something I can sign him up for thats just priced reasonably. A few places I tried calling up, the no. does not even work. Other spring break classes are priced at 500Dhs per week! thats 1500 for 3 weeks! I really want him to learn to swim. He loves the water and unfortunately we don't have access to a pool, so as to be able to just get an instructor to teach him swimming, and the places I called up charge 800+ for 10-12 classes and that too they can't say for sure if that would be enough. Its at times like this I wish we were in Dubai, there are so much choices are various price ranges... here it is simply annoying that every things in the 1000+ range and mostly located outside in KCA/Yas areas. Sorry ladies, just so frustrated, had to vent!

Sumi, I sympathize! ...and yes, people do think you are a neurotic when you insist on one. As TB says, seal belts at the back are an 'Extra' that you have to pay for. Only the fully loaded cars come with seat belts. As for all the negative 'oh, how cheap are they posts', please understand that not all countries (and therefore mindsets) are the same as ours...People in India who travel at 10kmph regularly, don't see much need for it. Thanks for the support Scribs & Barsha Lady1, appreciate it. :) Now that you mentioned it, I have to check with MIL about seat belts at the back. I usually travel in the front with MIL holding DS at the back if needed as I get motion sick a lot, so I can't seem to remember. If we don't have belts at the back, this whole discussion is moot. Yes, previously our trips were without the car-seat as there was just no way as even DS wouldn't sit in it happily and I had no voice there. This time the difference is, DS has finally understood the importance of car seats and now he insists on being buckled up (you know how persuasive 6yr olds can be with their grand parents?) so I have more of a chance. Also this time we have a few long road trips on highways and I would rest assured if he were buckled up. And yes, we can very well afford another car seat, but I cannot just go out and buy a second one unless I want to go through another round of disagreement and whatever else (yes typical indian mentality). Unfortunately, besides me no one else considers this a 'necessity'. Its more like an unwanted expense in the middle of the Christmas season with a whole load of other expenses. edited by sumi on 01/12/2013

seems it might work AnonDubai, i just googled a bit more and this link: http://blog.babypinkcollection.com/2010/08/maxi-cosi-priori-xp.html says its suitable for kids 9kg-18kg although age-wise it says upto 3.5 yrs. But DS is only as big as a 4 yr old. The one we have right now is this: http://pinkiblue.com/shop/car-seats/convertible/ferrari-beline-2-seats-in-1 but DS is not heavy enough to use it as a booster seat yet (3rd stage) nor even in 2nd stage as he's not yet 15kg most of the time. Sandfly's suggestion about bubblegum, started me thinking along those lines just now as well and I thought I'd see if I could use the base of our current seat instead. Easy to travel with just that... but seems that won't do either :( at least for now. Though any suggestions along those line would be welcome too. edited by sumi on 01/12/2013 edited by sumi on 01/12/2013

Normally, I am not very charitable, but I sympathize with you, Sumi. I have two extra car seats hanging around and I would be happy to give you one. They are for children ages 1-4. If you would like it, just let me know on here. I am in the Mirdif area. AnonDubai, thankyou, really, really appreciate it :). If one of the spare that you have is suitable for between 13-15kg, I would be so glad to be able to get it. DS is 6yrs old, but small... so I'm not sure if the one you have would suit him...?

I took bubblebums to India, they may not be perfect but they are a lot better than nothing, and they are useful for travelling elsewhere, going in taxis, etc, as well; could be worth looking into unless there really is no chance of persuading your DH.... is he normally this way though? It sounds very controlling for him to be insisting you can't buy something you consider essential for your child's safety. Thankyou for this suggestion Sandfly, didn't know there was such a thing. If I am unable to find a second car seat, I can just take our current one this time and bring it back and then next year when DS goes try to buy this and send it with him. Right now his weight is between 13-15kg.. He's small for his age (as we his parents are small) so I don't think it will be right this month... hopefully in 6 months from now, as the bubblegums start at 15kg and upwards.

ok, I know this sounds very strange to all of you and I really prefer to not start a discussion on how to convince /why I put up with etc on DH not considering car seats important. Trust me I have tried. (Yes, I am subscribed to Buckle up in the back on fb and hope someday one of its updates will have a positive effect on DH). Also to help you understand better, I (or my DS) is the ONLY child among all our family & friends who has even used a car seat since he was a baby and still is using it now. I have yet to meet another family (in india especially) who uses a car seat for babies, let alone toddlers or even older kids. I am the laughing stock of all family and friends when they see me *insist* on DS being buckled up.. so much that there are times I do hope we actually have an accident and DS is safe ONLY cause he was buckled up! Yes this seems a harsh thing for me as a mum to hope for, but it does pass my mind sometimes :( Its a battle for me at every (large) family trip, when I insist DS & I travel only if DS is buckled up especially if that means we take an extra vehicle. Once I sent an email to close family (with little kids) that showed video crash tests of what happens to kids not buckled up or improperly buckled up in the back in a hope that would persuade them. The response of one of my (male) cousins? "Now the option is with them (wife and kids)... to stay at home or not..." Dh and I almost ended in a fight the last time I discussed getting a second car seat and I just let the matter go. Which is why (despite the fact I am sounding like I am begging, which I am) I decided to ask here with the hope maybe I might be lucky enough to find someone who might have kids that just outgrew theirs. and yes, DH and a lot of others I know would rather spend 150Dhs on food than on safety. :'( ---- What eventually worked with DS, was me showing a youtube video of a crash where a (real) child was thrown out of the car and ALMOST landed near a truck but miraculously escaped along with a few other videos on how the child (crash test dummies) body reacts to crashes where its not buckled up properly. Yes, its too intense a video to show a 5yr old. But that stopped me having to fight with at least DS. edited by sumi on 01/12/2013

Thanks for the reply, Cornish Pixie. Unfortunately, buying one just won't happen. As I said Dh and I don't see eye to eye in the matter of car seats. So he has flatly refused to buy (another) one, even though I did see some lovely low priced ones on Dubizzle :(. By the look of things I may just have to take what I have now and arrange to get it back cause he always uses it here :( If I do find another one, I'll take it instead and leave it there so that DS can use it while he's there during summer vacation next year...

We are travelling this weekend to india for a month, and I would really like to have a car seat in the car for DS to sit in (while there). Due to weight restrictions and other issues, its not possible for us to take the one we have and then bring it back... we would need to leave it there. So was wondering if anyone had a car seat that they dont need (kids grown out of) and I could take it? DH is unfortunately not keen on buying another one... brand new or second hand... as he is not 'convinced' about these things, especially in India (dont ask.. its a typical indian mentality... I am just grateful I could convince him to buy the one we are using now here in UAE). Here I am the one who insisted on a carseat and DS has sort of understood that its important and has now developed the habit of buckling himself in the moment he's in the car. A habit I spent the last 4 years trying to ingrain into him as I didn't really have the support of DH and have FINALLY succeeded. DS is now 104cm and 13-15kg (range) and if I could get a seat that can last atleast for another 1-2 years it would be great... as there is no way I would be able to buy one. Please do post here Thanks edited by sumi on 03/12/2013

I did try online, but the description is not clear regarding the size in terms of length... just gives the scale which I have no idea about. Also the 340 online seems to be made of plastic and not die-cast...

I would like to get DS an A380 & an A340 of Emirates, die-cast. Not the larger sizes... something similar to the A380 Etihad that he already has, about 4.5 inches in length. Does anyone know where I can find them and how much they would cost? Thanks in advance! edited by sumi on 23/11/2013

Thanks horizonmum2, I doubt we can look into DPS at sharjah :( I went through a list of schools I found and shortlisted these: Gems new millennium Al khail Rajgiri International school DPS dubai Springdales dubai The websites of these schools do mention activities but do not mention from which grade they start with them or if parents have a choice of enrolling kids into it if interested. :(
