Pikachu - for many of us the only way we CAN fly with family is to use cheaper, budget airlines and TBH even if I were in a situation I could afford more expensive flights I think I would prefer to save the money and use it to help others less fortunate. It's great for kids to have to rough and slum it, even when really little. I had a friend when I lived in China who was CEO of Proctor and Gamble - oodles of money but he flew his teenage/ university kids everywhere in Economy even though his company would have paid for them to upgrade. That's as maybe but a 7 hour flight (plus the experience either side) isn't exactly a picnic for many people, especially children and I would prefer mine to "slum it" and learn their life lessons in other ways...Personally i'm not in the habit of inflicting hardship on to my children when it's not necessary.... all I said was 20 kgs is not a good baggage allowance in my opinion and we would struggle if that was all we had...obviously if we had no choice we would put up with it... I did a gap year many years ago - 12Kg including sleeping bag and roll mat. Nowdays, I try to take just had bagage so less than 8kg. Does me just fine.

Need to change my user name to Summer "cheapskate' Breeze. (although I prefer not to be refered to as overflowing and sweaty if you don't mind). I always fly cheapest that I can (with exception of a few airlines eg Aeroflot). If you look at the budget airlines, thier fleets are fairly new (fly dubai, air arabia, ryan air, air asia, easyjet etc). Not paying over the odds for surly service appeals. edited by summer breeze on 08/05/2013

the issue I believe is that this woman says she was coerced; she was threatened that her kids would be harmed if she didn't do it. now I do not know what her situation was when this threat happened, and why she could not have gone to the police at that stage. Also has she described the people that made her carry the drugs????? some things seem unbelievable really...most people know that this country,Thailand and Singapore are the worst for punishment of this type of crime I'm sure I read somewhere that she had a bit of a dodgy past long before this but dont quote me on that. She apparently was smuggling hash from India. If so then it kind of puts a different slant on the story. edited by summer breeze on 08/05/2013

One of the best things you can do for your skin is drink plenty of water throughout the day. I've never been one for expensive skin care treatment. A good old fashioned wash with soap and water and a bit of baby cream to moisturise. I'm fairly old but people always put me at least 10 years younger as I have barely any wrinkles....

Wouldn't it be good if the organisers would fine them a percentage of the revenue if they are late? You could give them a 30min grace period and then start hitting them in the pockets! Watch the divas change their tune then.

Good ideas, But what is really missing? plenty of coffee shops here but i never found a good fresh sandwich ..... I'm still asking! what is Dubai missing? what about a meditation / coffee shop? Bit of an oxymoron. Go and chill out by meditating and then hype yourself up with a double espresso. And clearly no something that EWers ave spring to mind... Yes, he's just a kid and the fame and money is too much too soon for him. How many times on here have people complained how people change when they get to Dubai and start to think they are "special" and that's adults. JWell B has had a massive change in circumstances in a short period of time and he's probably surrounded by a group of "yes" people. What he needs is a good manager who cares about him and his fans but I'm sure they are scarce in the music industry. I've massive respect for Britney Spear's dad who stepped in and pulled her back from the brink a couple of years ago. I just wish him all the best. Too many talented people die too young or end up miserable and alone - Elvis, Amy Winehouse etc He should have had a support act as most major names come on late. If he's having a hard time dealing with all his money he can send a large share to me.....He can keep the fame bit...

I'm not sure - possibly because the nursery is unavoidable and they are professionals who know CPR etc and I think he feels guilty that I have to work so we should be around all the remaining time. A date at home could work altho he will sit in his trackies and eat on the couch. Maybe if I light some candles and lay the table instead! Sorry for losing it but I'm sick of people making me feel guilty for working and wanting a life. I even get disapproving looks from the other mums at nursery whose kids go there for fun, not necessary childcare. I am setting a good example to my DD that women can be high achievers and she has no abandonment issues and is generally an extremely happy baby. We absolutely dote on her. I would love to know how those who can't bear to be parted from their children would feel if hubby lost his job and the burden was on them to go out to work. You make it work, you cope, you do your best and you don't judge others. Unfortunately some people get caught up in the fake aspect of Dubai. Most people back home have to work and people here forget that. Several people I know who had to go back to the UK during the bad times ended up divorced because they couldn't cope bringing up the kids (without a maid!!) and both parents having to work.... I think you are trying to achieve a balance in life and bring your DD with a realistic outlook on life and one where women have a legitimate ability and right to have a career and a family!

What do you mean poor thing?? I work FT hence she is a very happy baby in nursery. I spend all weekend with her, take her swimming, play with other babies and am with her from the minute she opens her eyes to the minute she sleeps. I am talking about a [b'>monthly [/b'>evening with my husband when my baby is ASLEEP - she wouldn't even know. I am of the opinion that my marriage is still important and we don't neglect each other, and are still husband and wife not mum and dad. Why do people feel the need to make rude and patronising comments about working mums, when if I said the same about non working mums I would be banned! Poor thing indeed. You asked for opinions and I gave you mine. You work full time, your baby in in nursery all day - which I fully understand as I worked fulltime when my son was little - and you still want to go out in the evenings. I think your husband has priorities right and your baby is lucky he has such a good daddy. Many men often complain that after the birth of a baby that they are 'left out', the mother spends too much time with baby/doing baby related things. Perhaps TDB is trying to avert that and keep her marriage 'alive' (not that I'm saying that there are any issues) for both her and DHs sake. I really don't think that people should be made to feel bad if they want a night out if they have arranged appropriate care. Just because you give birth does not mean you sign your entire life away when you sign the birth certificate. And what's right for one person is not right for another. TDB maybe as other posters have said, have an at home date night to start, with the aim of building up to nights out i the future (even arrange for a sitter whilst you are there).

I am little confused what the legal notice period is. How many days my landlord has to give? Anyone can help? My contract says it is 90 days before expiration of the lease contract. However, I have heard from many people that it has to be 1 year if the landlord wants to terminate the contract. This one year notice cannot be given to you at any time of the year. It must be given to you at the beginning of your contract. Thanks. I think the one yer rule is only when they sell the property or if they want to move them/family in. 90 days if they decide not to renew. However, you need to suck up the fact that you have broken the law rendering the contract nul and void. Just get over it and move. How many more ways can it be explained to you? How many more threads do you need to start before it sinks in? You really have no leg to stand on.

I can deal with the road signs, these are not claiming to be some kind of amazing posh thing but AT.MOSPHERE clearly consider themselves some kind of upmarket bar/restaurant in Dubai. So I find their dress code quite amusing: Dinner Jackets with smart jeans and closed shoes for men. I assume they mean sports coat/jacket as a dinner jacket would look quite ridiculous with jeans. Of course dinner jacket actually refers to an entire suit so wearing it with jeans could also be considered very tricky. Sorry I couldn't resist. As for the capitalisation, no idea. Any jeans/jacket is wrong. Men either look like they are going through a midlife crisis or they look like Jeremy Clarkson. Fashion police needed. edited by summer breeze on 30/04/2013

Our landlord gave us 12 months to vacate as he intended to sell our apartment. however the 12 months is nearly up and he has not sold the property, nor have any prospective purchaser viewed it. It is fairly clear that notice was given simply so he can increase the rent to new tenants. Do we have any rights in this situation? I don't mean to sound harsh, and I sympathise with you having to look for a new place to live, but does it really matter if he is selling/ has sold the apartment? It is his apartment and he has given you 12 months notice to vacate it. If he subsequently chooses to let it again for a higher rent, surely that is within his right, as he OWNS the apartment and has not turfed you out at a moment's notice? You could always offer to pay a higher (market) rent to stay for another 12 months? Tenant's rights in Dubai seem to be much stronger than in other parts of the 'developed' world; in the UK, you only need to give 2 months notice (and no reason!) to evict tenants. What you choose to do with your property after the tenants have moved out is none of their business. For what it's worth, I am not a landlord in Dubai, I rent and have moved when my rental contract has expired without being renewed. I usually look around at the going rate for similar rentals three months before the end of the contract, and work out if it's more cost effective for me to negotiate to pay a higher rent with my current landlord or to move. usually, I have managed to come to an agreement with the landlord on the next year's rent that is acceptable both to LL and to us. In other parts of the "developed " world you are not expected to cough up a years rent in advance or in 2/3/4 cheques - you pay monthly. In addition, many rental agreements allow the tenant a notice period without penalty.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the fees cannot automatically go up this year. They have to get permission from KHDA, which a few probably will....

I've flown with them a few times. They are fine, as long as you accept they are a low cost carrier and you pay for extras. You also have fly Dubai as another lower cost airline. All the schools I have worked at and have friends at (these are mostly British schools) have required a degree and PGCE or teaching degree (BEd or equiv). Alo the good schools have required 2 years experince. Remember that there is a lot more to PE teaching than just sports lessons. There is a fair bit or Biology and Physiology as well in exam years.

I'm not surprised she wanted to leave. OP regarding her day off you say 'When I finally gave it to her' - so how long did she have to wait for a day off????? Friday is the usual day to give as a day off - they get to meet up with their friends/family and go to church together. As others have said - she would feel lonely and isolated if she had a day off different to her friends. If we had something on and needed our housemaid on a Friday I would give her plenty of notice and often her cousin would come to our villa so they could still spend time together. If she worked part of a Friday (very rare) I would either pay her extra or give her extra time off. As it was a rare occurance she often chose the more money route. In my house/family there's only two people who have Fridays off and thats my daughters who work in a school. Everyone else because of the nature of their job works a Friday if the have to, and they have to. That includes sons, sons in law, daughter in law, who are all in the airline industry, my medical student son in law, carers, maids, and my right hand man. Its part of their job and whilst efforts are made to ensure anyone who works in my house has one definite Friday off per month ....if it cant be done then it doesnt happen and they have another day instead. No one seems isolated and its quite simply life and the job they are doing. However I really do believe its something that should be made up for in other ways even if its just by way of appreciating the person and the job they are doing - at the very least. Times change and we're long past the days of life coming to a halt just because its a certain day of the week. edited by DesertRose1958 on 20/04/2013 I assume tho that their friendship groups would also have the same erratic scheduling. Whereas most maids do get Fridays off - creating a potentially isolating scenario if she gets a different day off. Also, we have to remember that maids here are not surrounded by family which is different to your situation. That in itself can cause isolation.

This isn't a direct answer to your question, but it is difficult to get a buy to let mortgage in the uk for expats. Personally I would, however, get a uk or offshore mortgage as opposed to UAE one. A broker may well be a good option as they know who offers these.

TBH - unless your house is paid for and you are happy to live with no car, no social life and eat REALLY frugally the state pension is nowwhere near sufficient. It is quite scary how unprepared many of us are for retirement and scarier still how savings schemes/pension plans have been eroded in recent years. Last night, pensions minister Steve Webb said the report was ‘a startling reminder of the problems we are facing by failing to save for our retirement’. My parents saved for retirement and invested in pensions. They are the ones who paid in and are being told that they will get cuts in their 'benefits' left, right and centre! Too many people taking out and not enough putting into the UK at the moment. That's why I assume I will get nothing even after paying in for years and making my own provisions elsewhere.

I suppose it is all about time and money and how much time you have to spare and what you think your time is worth as opposed to what 29dhs means to you and then you have to factor in e.g. the time to stand in the queue then put that against the time you would spend coming to buy a tube of toothpaste the next time you need one - the petrol, the use of your car,the use of your shoe leather, the metro etc and then that's without thinking about the interest that that 29 dhs will be earning in your purse for that extra week or two plus the time you have taken out of your busy day to do this, not forgetting the waste of time of the person at the desk who is being harrassed by the man with the broken sewing machine versus the time you will stand next time at the checkout but at least someone is getting a job taking back your toothpaste ( so that's a really good thing) and putting it back on the shelf so all in all it is really a great act of humanitarian kindness and it is much much better than shooting animals........ edited by spongemonkey on 26/03/2013 But what about if you need that 29dhs now to buy food so you won't go hungry? They may be able to wait for new toothbrush/toothpaste until next pay day...
