Thank you summer breeze! Your post is really helpful! Might I ask you when and where one pays for the different fees (inspection fees and import fees)? Can it only be done at the government vet office near DXB terminal 2.I'm asking this because our dog will fly in our plane, rhat means we'll arrive all together. It would have been great if we paid all online.... It's all done online! You will need to register first, then apply for import permit. Here's the link to start the process, which also contains what you need: http://www.moccae.gov.ae/en/our-services/animal-wealth/permits/import-permit-pets.aspx The import permit (500aed per dog) you will need to get no more than 28 days before flight.i would suggest getting it 2 weeks before you plan to fly just in case you have to change flight. You will need to have scanned copies of a few documents (can't T remember exactly but maybe your passport, pet passport). You pay with credit card. The permit will then be available online within a few hours I think. Once you have all the other documents from your vet you then go back online and upload. You then pay the 1000 online as well. It's not as clear where to do this, so you just need to poke around a bit! Email the gov vets if you are stuck! When you arrive you will need a couple of hundred Aed for handling fees and customs. Cash is best for this part. These are paid at the offices in cargo village (near terminal 2) at the same buildings where you will go to the government vet and where you will pick up your dog. The government vets are really helpful. It takes just over an hour from landing to being able to put your pet in your car! Although, if you are arriving on the same flight you will obviously be a bit longer, but rest assured your furbaby will be well looked after in cargo village!

http://www.moew.gov.ae/assets/5064985a/pet-import-permit-dogs-and-cats.aspx This is a link to current requirements for importing pets to UAE. You can submit all paperwork online so when you get to the airport for pickup you just need to supply bill of lading, pay handling fees at dnata office, pay customs fee (all in the same building as government vet office near DXB terminal 2) and then pick up the dog.

Waitrose (margarine, yoghurt, cheeses, milk) do a selection as does Park n Shop (cheddar cheese, milk). There is also a local dairy that makes lactose free milk. It's in a UHT tetra-pac type packaging. It is cows milk but they use a chemical to break down lactose. I found it in Carrefour, Park N Shop and Geant. Most supermarkets sell a variety of non-dairy milks.

I am going to start being being honest. I diont know if the Brexit was the right or wrong thing to do! None of us has the ability to truly know what will happen tomorrow, next week or in 20 years time. All I want to see happen is for the people of the U.K. accept the decision and crack on repairing the country - it's been broken for a long, long time....

Both sides were making very strong arguments nd the result is so close. Good luck to Britain and EU. Weighted voting may become a concept of the future, As expats in this country, does this affect your day to day life in anyway? I am sure the results of it are very unknown at this time though. I wonder how it affects marriages between Brits and non Brits. Well they can envoke article 50 to start the separation process. Then they will have 2 years to decide who gets the toaster, kettle etc. Maybe have a side deal about visiting the dog..... Sorry couldn't resist.

When I was a little girl we went on a family holiday to Spain. Total disaster. I cut my foot open and ended up with 3 stitches, a waiter had an epileptic fit at our table as he was serving us, my dad had to rescue a boy from the swimming pool, myself and sisters got stuck in the lift (what made it worse was we had a chip butty with us and you could see everyone getting the smell of it and looking around to see who had the food) and then on the way to the airport in the coach we got stopped by armed police and 3 young lads made a run for it...... And this was all in a fortnight on the Costa del Sol!

Summer breeze, did you enjoy your trip? I am hoping to visit next year so any feedback would be great. TIA I did a horse riding trip, staying in gers with local families. I did some archery, learned how to cook some Mongolian food. I had a lovely time. It's not for everyone as it's very basic (pit latrines and no proper showers for days on end) but I'm a backpacking type so it didn't bother me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I -think- buying fireworks here is impossible due to safety and all that. I think you also have to have a licence and permission to set them off at home? I think there's lanterns in Dragonmart if you're happy to let something off into the air this evening :D Otherwise check with the golf clubs or even JBR beach, I imagine there'll be a show at one of them. Please, please, please do not get lanterns. They are incredibly dangerous to animals and the environment. There has actually been a call to ban them in the UK due to the dangers.

I would like to dispel the myth that it's difficult and you need lots of paperwork to import animals to the UAE. When I was importing my dogs I kept reading that it's really hard and and you really should get a company to do it. I decided to go it alone anyway and it was really not difficult at all. Most of the process is done online before you even leave your country. And clearing them when they arrived took approximately 1 hour - most of that is because they have to come from the terminal to the freezone! Edited to add: by doing it myself I saved around $3000 for 3 dogs!

Unfortunately, this is not exclusive to that company. So are you really any safer with a taxi than these? Who knows. What the real issue is that women need to be treated with greater respect and seen as equals to men. And men should be raised in a way that they value women. Stop outdated customs of dowries, arranged marriages, fgm etc. Rape is a terrible act of violence against women that has very very very little to do with what you call outdated practices. In the western world where women are considered your definition of equal the same act of violence is commited against women. And FGM is a totally different discussion that again has nothing to do with rape. All over the world this happens to women. If you read what I wrote I stated that women should be treated with respect and as equals. Forcing a woman to marry someone she doesn't know, mutilating her etc does not set a tone of equality. It does not set the tone for men to see women as anything but lower than them. And no where did I say western women are seen as equals.

I know this doesn't answer your question per se but maybe get a chauffeur service to pick her up. If you use the Marhaba service you can add that on for about 145aed. You also get the benefit of a speedy service through the airport for her and you can just wait at home and not worry about getting to the airport and back!

For fat burning - high intensity interval training. Can be done on a treadmill, cross trainer or bike. Just do 1 minute at a steady pace then 40 seconds at a high speed. For toning exercises that use your own body weight are good. Eg sit ups, press ups, squats, walking lunges, burpies, Turkish get ups. The absolute best thing that I have found is kettle bells. They combine cardio with strength training. You can find videos on You Tube. I got my kettle bells in Decathlon in Mirdif City Centre.

OP the best thing to do is talk to your child to confirm what they have said. Then speak to the teacher personally. If that fails then go higher up int he school, maybe a deputy head or head teacher. That should resolve the issue. Going to the head straight away is an over reaction and as for going to MOE and KHDA that is a TOTAL over reaction. The teacher should be given a chance to give their side of the story &/or modify what they are doing, similarly if it takes intervention/support from senior management. I think some people do go a little over the top with their suggestions!

They had some in Spinneys Uptown this morning. Yes if only Park and Shop could have told us this morning that they were going to fail our order, as we too have seen geese everywhere the last few days but we wanted to honour the order we had with park and shop. They just had to leave it until the very last minute to inform us they could not deliver this is the most frustrating thing. This is on top of the failed Christmas tree order whereby Waitrose called to say they had a tree, then whilst we were driving to collect it and were a few minutes away called again to say they were mistaken and had sold it. Then the tree lights I bought from Carrefour that blew after just a few days, which isn't a major issue except it meant having to pretty much take everything off the tree to get the broken lights off and put it all back on again. Then there was the roasting tin ordered into Tavola that was assured to arrive on Sunday, then Monday, then we had to make two trips there today as it hadn't even left the warehouse yet. Oh and we have a new maid service who cannot wash dishes, mop floors, hoover or iron and will only load the dishwasher when it's mid way through a self cleaning cycle with Japanese wood handled knives and crystal wine glasses. She actually creates more work, and is only here for two hours twice a week, but yet I still bought her a Christmas gift and gave her some money because I feel bad not doing it. I only have to question is she daft or is she taking us for a ride? Oh yes and in the last month the garden company finally managed to send their new 'Engineer' who confirmed the grass is no more it is just weed. Then offered to replace it for AED 3000 which was jolly nice since his gardeners started killing the lawn early this year and we spoke to his predecessor three times about it and were promised it would be put right. Admittedly with Waitrose, Tavola and now the Garden Centre after me going absolutely crazy they managed to put things right but really should life be like that? Should you have to get angry and shout at people all the time to get a basic service?! It's not something I like to do but over the last month it seems trying to be polite results in nothing but one disaster after another. So now it's after 10pm and I have only just started preparing for lunch tomorrow after having been driving too and fro to places the entire day and I have morning sickness so feel rubbish and frankly the last thing I want tomorrow is Christmas. But hope all you ladies have a lovely Christmas in any case. This year for reasons I won't divulge, we are unable to celebrate Christmas. There will be no turkey/goose, no presents, not even decorations. But this morning I have woken up happy and not bothered. Why? Because I have the people I care about here with me today. In fact I think this may become a regular thing! So don't fret about what what you don't have, focus on what you do have. Christmas is not about gifts and lunches. It's about spending quality time with those you care about. Have a lovely day.

, and should remember it is only expensive compared to the relatively low rents over the last three years. . One can also say the 2007/2008 rents were relatively high; 100k for a small 1 bedrom apt anyone ? The main thing that drives rental prices apart from supply is income. The vast majority of the city, and I am talking about white collar workers with families, do not earn enough to be able to afford a 100k 1 bedroom apt or a 130k 2 bedroom apt which is what rents were like in the summer of 2008. In the short run, people will take loans or use savings to not move for a year or 2 due to children's schools etc., but in the long run, it is not sustainable to have a city where the average 2 bed in non-prime locations costs 50 - 70% of the income of a white collar worker The same could be said of any major city, but it is sustained because only the top earners or those with living costs supplemented by company or family live centrally. Or buy if they can afford, to protect themselves from spiralling rents... Which is what many people did, but the market dropped... Markets are circular and rents, wages, interest rates, property prices etc will all correct themselves - of course there will be another recession at some point in the future, but it is not only tenants that need consideration, perhaps property investors more-so. Why do you say "investors more so"? Investors primary purpose is to make money, but the risk is there that investments can go down as well us up. It's not the tenants issue that some people over stretched themselves and bought properties at silly prices with stupid interest rates and now face having to cover the shortfall. I have properties in the UK and in over 10 years the rental price has increased by 12%. Here prices go up by more than that overnight, creating instability. Landlords want top dollar, companies are no longer providing the benefits or wages to sustain paying top dollar rents, people leave, landlords don't get tenants... Reminiscent of 2008/2009?

Like I wrote before, to much mockery on here, you can't expect people to invest in Dubai and then limit the return on investment. Of course you can, otherwse it will be like capitalism on steroids where all that matters is whether investors can extract their pound of flesh regardless of what happens to the majority of residents. The new decree is a very fair one and it "limits return on investment" to a certain extent. Without a limit Dubai will again see a mass exodus. A fair number of people I know are leaving at the end of the academic year as they are struggling with school fees and high rents. I've already informed my landlord that I'm leaving at the end of the contract. His new rental price is now 1.5 times what I am paying. Places with a more mature housing market have found their level. Unfortunately, Dubai's property market is still in its infancy and needs nurturing. Without these laws there is a chance that there wouldn't be any people left to rent your property....

Build more higher rise buildings because they only have 20 in the top 100. Build more shopping malls as there is always room for more. Build a new Crystal Palace out of Swarovski crystals... Because we can. Forget the Chrysler building. We need a Toyota Landcruiser Tower. The Petrol Towers, as opposed to the Petronas Towers. Move over Lloyds Building, we need a PIC/Holborn Building. Mustn't forget a Falafel Cathedral modelled on St Basil's. And for those of you who used to watch Blue Peter, instead of Petra we should have a Shep!

You bought a car where indicators are optional extras and you didn't want to waste your money. If you do use indicators, it means that you are moving over NOW not that you intend to move over once it is safe. Every time there is a traffic jam the shoulders turn onto your own private driving lane. Someone overtakes you and you feel that that is a personal insult so you have to try to either stay up with the overtaking car thus not allowing them to move over a lane or you just undertake. You realise at the last minute that you are just about to miss your exit so suddenly brake and cut right 3 lanes without any form of consideration for anyone else on the road. You bought a Nissan Sunny or a Toyota Corolla and forget to get the 80kmph limiter switched off. You genuinely think that the overtaking lane is the fast lane. You think that the stopping distance for 120kmph is the width of a fag packet. You don't understand why the car you are flashing at doesnt move over a lane, despite them being in the midst of overtaking another vehicle. No doubt I will have more... edited by summer breeze on 04/12/2013

It is a shame as DH is a qualified CFA yet there is no way he would ever work for these "wealth management" companies who employ spotty 22 year olds with no experience to do a hard sell with no understanding of the implications of the products they sell. They are targeted on call times, number of "appointments" they fix up and then commissions based on what they sell. It is all marketed as "free advice" however we all know that is not the case. When I was interested in a mortgage here, the lady was ever so forceful in me agreeing to meet her, but I insisted she just email me all the info after I had filled out endless forms. She then stopped answering any questions until I paid her a fee. The other line I give them is that my husband is the one who makes all our financial decisions and then they ask for his number - of course I don't give it to them, but might give them Pizza Hut's next time :) Or, if you could get it, the CEO of the company's mobile number so they could realise how annoying it is.
