Today has been the type of day I describe verbally, should someone ask, as "peachy"... But said through clenched teeth with a maniacal grin plastered on my face. Now am fed up and tired and hungry and as is normally DH who does fun, weekend food like burgers and chips on Thuirsdays, and as his absence at home at the moment is part of what's made the day so ugh, there's nothing for dinner. So need to order in something good that can be eaten on couch in front of telly - when DD finally falls asleep !!! - to make me feel better! Any and all suggestions welcome. Except Indian. Don't feel like Indian. Or pizza. Hmmm. What else?? Chinese? Middle Eastern?? Other??? I know the kind! What part of town are you in? Mandarin Tree in Barsha does a decent chinese delivery. Mir Amin in Jumeiirah 3 has the brilliant-est... EST... EST... Arabic. And Oregano delivers decent pasta and nibbles. Not their pizza though. Thats pretty poor.

Not directly connected but just wanted to say... Went today for 6 month shots to Al Safa (a bit late because of the flu). Brilliantly handled. In and out in 30 minutes, including a well baby check, brief on what happens next and the making of our next appointment (with the notification bySMS before we reached our car). Once we got past the initial hassle of registering, I find it so convenient and worth it. Huge believer here :D

Hi survive... I did some research on this and found that while its loads cheaper to buy online, the shipping pushed the price up (using shop and ship which i found the only option because most places don't delver larger items here). Primarily because the double pumps come with a lot of accessories and packaging which makes it heavy. In the end it was only slightly less than buying it here. And if you get it on sale then it'll actually be cheaper to buy here than have it shipped. If you want a new one, maybe ask someone to bring it if thats an option or wait for a baby shop sale. They offer 25% off usually. There should be one between now and the summer (summer surprises deals). I finally went the Medela Freestyle way because that was much more portable and easy to use I thought than the pump in style. Same motor, but much smaller. I barely used it though because I wasn't able to feed for very long and didn't go back to work. I have it in perfect condition available for sale if you are interested. You can email me at susanpriyadiaz at gmail dot com if you like

I tried it once at a spa in Thailand. I thought my skin looked great for a few days after. But not sure if that was the holiday or the mask :) I paid much less for it there than the prices charged here, so I probably wouldn't get one here because I didn't think the results were dramatic enough to make it worthwhile.

I went a couple of years ago, and yes at that time it was depressing. Most stores weren't open even. Since then though I've had a few friends go there and tell me its a bit hit and miss but it does have some bargains. The time I went, i did get a couple of suit jackets at Mango quite cheap (though they did pack the wrong one and I had to make the trip back :\:). Also got one of my favorite belts ever at another store. I'd say make a trip and see what you get. Its a 30 minute drive at most and really isn't that bad.

I have come to realise I just don't get a full nights sleep :( last week I had a cold, so took some cold meds, which made me realise that during that time I was actually not waking up in the night like I normally do. This has been going on for a good year, firstly due to my baby ds but he sleeps through the night and has done for several months. So why do I keep waking up in the night at least once or twice? Then feel tired the next day? Any remedies? I've got a similar problem. Take ages falling asleep, then falling back asleep each time. My baby doesn't sleep through the night which compounds issues but even when she does sleep long stretches, I find myself waking up. Tried all the usual - lavender, warm milk, shower, meditation/relaxation techs etc. Even Panadol night. No luck. The only thing that helped a bit was going to visit family for a week - though it was a hectic trip. Slept much better there. And its continued here, though nowhere close to solved, I do get a few hours more than before. Also try to see if you can get a nap somewhere in the day. I nap during my daughters first nap when I can. Not great but it does help with energy to get through the rest of the day. Ive been told to try acupuncture and hypnotherapy but haven't yet. Maybe they're options.

Hi We use boots soltan factor 50 for babies, It's excellent and is a lotion for sure. I recently got a 1 tog sleeping bag from just kidding who deliver to your door, I think they do hats too. Try sandypants online pretty sure they do ithem. Hth Sorry to hi-jack: What temperature do you keep the room at? What clothes do you dress your baby in and do you cover with an additional blanket. I have a 1 tog but not sure how to use it. Thanks in advance The thermostat reads 22 but the temp on the monitor says 24. Our pediatrician said between 22 and 24 so thats where we keep it. We use just the 1 tog sleeping bag and a full footed night suit. No blanket, because she can pull it off now (7 months). The way I did it was to feel the back of baby's neck as someone told me. If its a comfortable temperature then you're fine. Either cold or sweaty will tell you which direction to change in. Also its better for baby to be a bit too cold than too warm is what I've been told, so avoid too many layers unless you need them.

That's super helpful, thanks susandiaz! The lady at Latifa told me Umm Suqeim, but I'm not sure if Nad Al Sheba is actually closer to us (we're in Al Waha and the lady at Latifa didn't seem to know where that was!). I guess I'll just have to pop down to Umm Suqeim with all my paperwork and see what happens :D. Good luck!

For your first appointment, you're best off going there to make an appointment because they'll expect proof of residence. It works according to location closest. So take your tenancy contract and passport copies to be on the safe side. If not there'll be a bit of a run around. http://www.dha.gov.ae/EN/Facilities/HealthCenters/Pages/default.aspx If you look on there and choose the clinic closest to you it'll list 'catchment areas' and you can cross check. Once you get your appointment its very organized I found. Remiders and everything. Easy enough to reschedule as well.

Of all the Spinneys I have been to I have to say the big one in Umm Suqeim 3 is the most expensive. Especially with meats. I noticed the big markups immediately. Spinneys Mercato would that one be better? That was the one I went to... I found a can of SMA was AED 10 cheaper than the Umm Suqueim one! :\: The one near The One is cheaper as well. Gosh can't believe I didn't know this. The US one is the one I use for a lot of my stuff because its closest. Shocker! I know Spinneys as a whole is fairly expensive and I only use it for things like meat, bread and baby stuff. But for formula and suchlike I've actually found it the same or slightly less than Choitram's in Al Safa. Oh well. What is positive though is that if you're organized and happy to freeze/store some things, their Market Days are quite useful. Im guessing their prices for that are the same because its published in a flyer. Must check though.

DC... I'd posted on another thread that my next door neighbours were relocating and I'd check if their help was available. Sorry it took a few days... the lot of us have been flu-ed out! Didn't want to spread the germs by popping across and asking! Anyway.... Turns out the lady has already signed on with another family and the transfer is done. Just wanted to let you know so you'd rule that one out. Good luck with the hunt.

My 6.5 month old just got her first tooth yesterday. She's been 'teething' for over 2 months! The crankiness and red cheeks and wanting to chew on EVERYTHING went on for aggessss. I used an amber teething necklace from the time she was 4 months. Also there are the teething powders/tablets (homeopathic) which help. For the actual days of cutting the teeth I used Dentinox teething gel a few times. Not sure if it helped. What did help though was Adol which I was actually giving her because she had the flu and a fever but it seems to have addressed the pain. My daughter is cranky and clingy through the day as well as when she wakes up at night though.

I'd second Lucky's too. Yes they have a lot of India and oriental in general pieces but if you look you'll find a fair few solid wood contemporary ones (we got a centre table - large one - thats solid wood with a plain top and flush solid square legs. The design on the top is just 5 engraved 'stripes' around the edge). They are definitely worth a stop because of the huge difference in price. You'd get a fab table for about 1800-2000. If you want to go let me know, think I have the GPS coordinates for Sharjah saved. I can look it up. Also try United Furniture. Very Home Centre-y but has the odd gem. Its on Shk Z between 2 and 3 interchange.

Maybe for next time try SensAsia Spa. I used the one on the Palm a few times. Was great. Did the Elemis Facials a few times and the Eve Lom once. Fantastic but expensive. For all the facials, ask them if there is a cheaper version (they do have a 60 min one, or one without a massage etc if you ask for it for much letter but still gives you the benefit of the facial). For instance, the Eve Lom one is about 680 and if you ask for the 60 min one, its 490 i think. Not a regular facial, but a great indulgence every so often :D

Version Francaise in the Marina offers it. I went there for the longest time (still go now and again but haven't colored my hair in a while so only done cuts). They are very reasonable on the color itself - they charge by the amount used. So tube 1 is 150 and 50 for additional or something like that. My long hair would be about 250. The problem though is the additionals. They charge 40 for a wash and condition and about 40 to just use the hair dryer on your hair! They are great though. The last time I did a color there the whole thing was about 350 (again long hair). Still more reasonable that most I thought. And they have specials some days so maybe call and ask?

I suppose cleaning yourself for the time the Maid is on leave (is that 4 weeks?) is not an option? You could save the cash you would have to pay any part time help and it can't be that long that your Maid is on holiday. Other women take care of their own house all year round and manage, so why go through the stress of finding and paying someone for short term? She asked not to be dissed! If she wants a cleaner, then she can have a cleaner! seriously did not mean to diss her, live and let live, I just imagine finding someone, hiring them and risking to be disappointed, just to have someone for a short period, wouldn't be worth it for me.... But I do have to smile just a little at the whole idea of not being able to manage a month or so without the Maid (I am aware that it might not have been meant that way, but it does sound like that to me).... It's not a question of not being ABLE to - it's a question of can't be ***** to ;) and that has included me in the past. Who wants to spend their life cleaning if they don't have to? SM - A woman after my own heart :D! Love it. DC about the full time, I had similar issues and finally took the plunge. We seem to have a good one so far *clutches wood desperately* and its been nearly a year. Its the luck of the draw as with anything else though. I spoke to about 40 and was almost in tears before we nervously picked this one. She does hang around ours a lot because she's bored, I won't lie to you. You do figure out boundaries as it goes along. Also, our next door neighbours are relocating and seem to have had their lady for a while. Do you want me to ask if she's any good, and if she's available? edited by susandiaz on 05/03/2012

I've totally forgotten what DS did at that age :\: but DD is four months and she doesn't stay up more than about two hours at a stretch. Her first nap of the day is usually no more than an hour after her initial wake-up, and her awake periods get longer as the day goes on. I'd say if it's been easy to get her to go to sleep with these gaps up until now, maybe she's not tired enough and might be able to cope with a little longer awake? But I do remember DS only ever stayed up 1 to 1.5 hours after his first wake-up, so maybe if she's tired and goes to sleep too late for her first nap, she might then be cranky because she's overtired for the rest of the day? Sleep is such a complicated issue, and so hard to get right, and I feel like I'm always getting it wrong. I guess the best thing for you to do is try keeping her up a bit longer and see how it goes, then if that doesn't make any difference try putting her back to bed sooner for her first nap? Or the other way around :). Thanks DC. Trying the shorter awake time before first nap. Things are really messy right now because she has a horrid cold as well, so I just rush her off to bed when there's any sort of sign and hope she'll go to sleep. Will keep with the earlier first nap and stretch out the rest and see how it goes once she's a bit better.

When you find you have the same maid every time, you realize pdq it's because they're not v good and nobody else wants them. I think you might be right. I have agency maids twice a week and it's always the same lady with another, different, lady. The same lady is an arrogant little pest with a right attitude problem! I had a couple of fixed days in the week/time and had requested the same lady, which they accommodated since they knew in advance and could book it in. Did this after trying out a few ladies though. Saved a ton of time because I didn't have to explain where everything was and what needed to be done over and over; and she was reasonably competent.

When I didn't have a maid, I had an agency maid come in once a week and I did the rest by myself the other days. It is very expensive to have an agency maid everyday so you may just have to do things yourself while she's gone. Need a few times a week Anon, probably for a few hours each time. Have had loads of offers from the other maids in the compound as soon as they found out she was going, but don't want to go that way at all. The part time agency I used before for ages would give me a fixed rate a month (slightly lower cost than the per hour rate x number of hours). Probably only because I used them regularly though. Is the hourly rate around 30 still, would you know? Called a couple and thats what they had so just checking :)

Will try again (tried before but don't follow through, i just go in and knock her out because i usually think thats easier to deal with than cranky crying child who'll take twice as long to put to bed). If she just keeps playing in her crib, how long do you think I should just let her be? As long as it takes?

My daughter was similar in the early days. Didn't sleep for longer till past for 4 month mark. Now she does approx 1 hour, 2 hours and a 30 min catnap at 6+ months. It could work itself out. What i did was go in (sometimes with some milk) and put her back to sleep when she woke up. Eventually she slept through. Still wakes up sometimes but more often than not has her naps *knocks wood furiously* She is a **** night sleeper tho :(. Has been since around the same time that she became a good day sleeper. Don't know if theres any connection or if that helps you at all :\:

I'd agree that you should have it checked. The scar area itself stopped having any sort of pain after a few weeks for me. Only the occasional twinge if my baby steps on it. I do have some general loss of flexibility - not as agile as I was before but I suspect thats more because I've been lazy than the surgery. My doctor did say that complete healing can take up to six months.

I did my daughter's shots a few days before she turned 5 months. And now will be doing her 6 month shots just shy of 7 months. Don't think there are any issues. And as said below, ideally don't vaccinate before a trip because you don't want the added issues of these after effects alongside travel crankies. Enjoy your trip.

Sorry to hijack, but can anyone recommend a good waxing salon near the marina? I had an excellent wax when I was in holiday in Majorca - stayed smooth for ages, no ingrowing hairs, hygenic methods, etc - anywhere in dubai offering the same standard? Diki at Nail Beautique in Umm Suqueim. Best i've been to here. Particularly for a bikini wax. They use that wax you can pull off (not sure what its called) for sensitive areas. And no double dipping. She takes her time and is as gentle as can be expected. Haven't gone in a few months though hopefully she's still there.

Hi ladies, Our fridge broke yesterday, and the guys from Ariston quoted 1000 AED for the new compressor and it takes 5 days. So, it really doesn't worth it, cause I can buy a new fridge with 1200 AED. Since we bought so much groceries yesterday morning, and the fridge is full now, we have to act quick and buy a new one today. Just want to check with you guys, where do I have to call to give away my old fridge? TIA When we changed our fridge, we meant to call someone to pick it up, but when the delivery people from the new fridge company came by, we asked them if they could get rid of it, and they said yes. Was convenient so thats what we did.

Thanks Dubai Blue Moon. Positive vibes to you. My lil girl is 6.5 months old and we started weaning about 3 weeks ago. She isn't loving it. Doing fruit and veg for the moment. Some she'll have a bit but most she just shakes her head at. Just giving her some time on that and hoping for the best. We use SMA so got some of the ready to feed cartons and tried them today. She seems to not find a difference in the taste at least so I'll just keep trying. Will probably have to use both for a bit because I have stock (SMA goes out of stock now and again and I tend to hoard :P).

Depends how far you want to drive really. We like some spots on the coastal road that goes from Quriat to Sur. there's the white sand beach that's quite popular. Several other stunning and more secluded spots along the way too. There's also the turtle beach which has an equipped camping ground with toilets, barbecue pits etc Let me know if you need more details and I'll post my email.

There's a salon called Nail Beautique on al wasl (near manara). Ask for a lady called diki (I think that's how it's spelled). She's good. No double dipping either! Not painfree by any means but definitely the least painful I've tried here.

Try Amara Spa. At the Park Hyatt. They have lovely couples rooms with an outdoor shower and chilling area. You don't have to get any of the soppy packages if you don't want to here either. They offer just massages at the same time, or any 2 treatments really. The setting is lovely. And you can also use the facilities for the day if you like. A few of the hotels here offer all of these (We've tried Grosvenor House, the one that was the Royal Meridien and a couple of others. We liked this one best for overall experience). The Lime Spa at Desert Palm is also nice but a bit far out.

I got the same one from LIFE as well. The branch on Al Wasl had quite a few (next to Emirates NBD). They didn't have my size though so they sent me to the one on Mankhool road next to Standard Chartered and they'd kept one on hold for me there. I got another one at Supercare as well previously, it didn't work at all. Not as much support.
