Thanks ladies. What we have is the AC1100 too. Paid a small fortune for it even from the US (random aside: its not available here but based on the cost differences on the other models i've reaearched, I wonder how much it's going to cost here when it does arrive!) Maybe I'll try positioning it at the nearest point where it doesn't beep it's silly little head off as you suggest kiwi and see how that works out. It's mainly for day naps and a few hours at night until we go up to bed. Really not keen to buy another and have a similar situ.

Are you sure you don't need your can? Might take you up on it I'd I can't find some soon. Have a couple of weeks of stock for now between cans and tetra packs that I use for going out. So will be in touch.

Hi giggles. Yes it is te sensor one (sensor sound and video). We dont use the sensor anymore really though. How do uou mean position it differently? We've tried it exactly at her bed (the video and sound unit) and take the other handheld around. Is there a different way to do it? Must admit we only skimmed through the manual for basics maybe i should check again. No it's not damaged at all. I use it everyday now but it just won't work if I go beyond a certain range (starts beeping as it's meant to) if I come downstairs. Works in certain bits (room directly below) but the areas I spend my time in are unfortunately not there. Sydneygal I did hear some good reviews on the avent. Do you mind my asking how much it was approximately? And where you bought it from? Eta: duh! Just realized you said mothercare sydneygal! Thanks ladies! edited by susandiaz on 04/11/2011

If you want custom made try either chocoa or the bakery at Radisson Blu Deira. Costs from 450-650 for about 25 people (though they'll say 15 servings) depending on design - which you can give them or choose from their options. They're beautiful though for special ocassions.

I had some spotting @ 11 weeks. Feeding so typing quick. First preg so panicked. Went to emergency coz I hadn't started seeing my hospital doc yet. They did a scan and said all good and nothing to worry about unless it was bright red they did put me on progesterone supplements tho for 2 weeks since it was under the 12 week mark. If worried just go check to put ur mind at ease. But know it's prob nothing to worry about. Good luck. Stay well.

Personally I went the doctor at hospital route to begin with and in month 7 my doctor - Yuliya from city - left and moved to Cooper clinic. After much thought I decided to follow her coz it was late in the game and I was really comfortable with her. She delivered at medcare and all round a decent experience. But friends of mine who'd stayed with the hospital (direct doctors) did seem to have it easier. For example we had to speak to 2 sets of people at the time o delivery. There was paperwork to be sent to hospital and notes that we had to carry. We were unfamiliar with the staff in maternity etc. Not a big deal but extras that could be helpful not to worry about on an already 'big' day. Also most hospitals tend to be direct billing for insurance while a good number of clinics arent so that might be something to think about. Maybe find a couple of doctors you like and then decide. I saw 2 doctors before I found mine.

I've got one you're welcome to borrow. It didnt help me a whole lot during pregnancy because I found it pretty uncomfy till almost the very end (it presses down on your lower tummy unless your bump is very round). And by the end, funnily, I didn't need it. It's a pretty good one that my gyn recommended and I got from life pharmacy. It's a size large I think. Would that work? edited by susandiaz on 12/09/2011

My doula that i used for the birth of my baby in august is Zanny Gandy. She was recommended to me by one if the popular doulas on here because she was on leave at the time. Zanny was absolutely brilliant - long story short, by birth went wrong in pretty much everyway and I had to first be induced then taken in for an emergency C and the baby was in a bit of distress and in NICU for a day. Through all this zanny supported us brilliantly making sure we had the information and help we needed at each stage. She also did all our prenatal sessions and worked with me on breast feeding which really didn't come easy to me those first few days. She's a lovely person - positive and great fun and very very dependable. She constantly went out of her way yo make sure we were comfortable and wasn't strictly by the book. she does postnatal work as well which I didn't use because my mum is here but I did call on her loads for feeding since she is a breastfeeding peer counsellor. Her email is doulazanny at hot mail dot com should you need to contact her In my research I had found quite a few doula recommendations on here as well a couple of whom I met but Zanny was whom I went with and it was one of my better decisions :) Hang in there, I feel your pain and all I can say is that it does get easier as they pick things up. Good luck!

Dr Yuliya Mikhael from Cooper. She was previously at City. I had an emergency C section with her in the beginning of August. She's brilliant! Can't say enough good things about her in general. I know choosing an obs whose general attitude and bedside mAnner you like is a very personal choice coz people vary so much in what they're looking for. Shes very balanced - between chilled out and cautious. No unnecessary tests and panic. As for the actual procedure shes very talented. I've been up and about since the day after my surgery. Planned to write a proper birth report on the delivery but haven't got around to it! Let me know if you need more info though and I'll give it to you.

Dubizzle as a medium is fine. As Zeynab says due dilligence needs to be done on what you're buying - becuase in the end while most people are legitimately selling a good product, there are the dodgy ones on there. The tone of the ad and the details and language are usually a good indication of whether you should bother calling for a first check at all. We've bought and sold off dubizzle quite successfully in the past. I do have a Jeep Cherokee for sale on there right now. If you're interested, i can send you an email with the details. Yes please! Not sure if you still need suggestions - but i go to Version Francaise in Dubai Marina. Love them. I use a girl called Kate. And Feri is great too. A bit expensive on the cuts depending on the stylist. The salon is owned by Alex and Karine and they cut too and are supposed to be great. Though i'm quite happy with my stylist so have stuck with her. She's changed my style a few times from long to short to the horrid interim phase and kept my hair looking great, so i'm a believer :). Colour there is very reasonable, they charge by the amount you need rather than length of hair and i've never paid more than 250 for full colour for longer hair and 400 for full highlights. Overall if you do a cut, colour, highlights and a blow dry, you'll wind up paying the same as you would in any other bigger salon in Dubai and i find them much better than the ones i've tried. They use Kerastase n Redken and have some fab treatments too.

No luck with that one then :-) how about a recommendation for a tiler? Or where sells nice light fittings? Couple of places on the Karamal/Zabeel stretch for light fittings. We got some from a place called Inara... a few blocks down from the furnitire stores, rivoli etc. There are a few stores earlier on that stretch as well. you can see them from the main road that comes off Makhtoum if you're heading in the Shk Z to AD direction. Also there is one on the road that leads from the Trade Centre spinneys to the GPO - on your right in the service lane perpendicular to babyshop. But, the best place by far if you can stomach the trek and the general experience is Dragon Mart. Tons of lighting at ridiculous prices. like a fourth of what it is in karama. Went there with a brave friend who led me around and found some faboulous deals. you do need to haggle though, even if its tempting to accept the price they offer since its so much less to begin with ;)

i bought the groupon voucher for the cut and dry for my sis and me. we used them a couple of weeks ago. just ok on the cut i'd say. we didnt try anything too adventurous, i just had a minor change to remove the longer ends off a bob and my sister had a length change on the same style. not terribly happy with mine since she put in some layers which really dont suit my length and texture making it stand out a bit which a really good stylist should be able to advice against. my sisters cut was great (she stayed true to the original). the blow dry was fine - and since we both wanted it straight they flat ironed too. wash etc was with good product (redken i think). Bottom line, worth it for the very small price we paid for the voucher. but wouldnt restyle to anything adventurous here based on our 2 experiences.

Wow wow wow all positives that's great. I need to look into the playing chess with cars thing. Thanks again. Are the pools clean? And the shared gyms - good too? Yes very. definately in our block (we were in a complex that had one hotel appartment, so not sure if that made it any better maintained??). Our friends were in another block which was also great though. Gym - basic, but well maintained. So also all common areas - inside and outside. there's lifeguards (open hours) and security on duty - havent seen anyone at the gym (dont take my word for that - prob went twice in 3 years ;)). Didnt realise quite so many people felt the way i do about the greens :D. Still miss living there after over 3 months of moving out!

Agree that its small and v nice. might be a trek though, just for a treatment. we had a treatment there so went early had lunch by the pool, and generally chilled in the pool before treatment so it was a very nice day. treatments themselves were great and the before and after are as you'd expect in any posh spa in dubai. if your friend is there at about 5-6 in the evening, she can see the polo practice. the spa suites overlook the grounds. beautiful horses, if she's into that sort of thing :)

N.Kaye... We lived in the greens for 3 years - still own there and have a tenant in. its great. never had a problem with smells through the vent that i know of (jst once had a neighbour leave something dodgy in the garbage room rather than chuck down the chute and it got a bit strong since it was friday) :\:. We were on the second floor. to the best of my knowledge, there are no villas in phase 1, 2 or 3 (thats street 1-6 and the perpendicular road 7 with the exception of the new higher rise near the school). Maybe the new building has them? or maybe what people are talking about are the larger, enclosed courtyard type 'balconies' on the ground floor that offer direct access to the pool/common areas. These do not offer direct access (as an entrance) to the apartments though since they are french windows with internal locks and also open from a secure internal area that you would not be able to access unless you were coming up from the basement (in which case, it would actually be more complicated to access from the outside than in). Also there appartments are exactly the same size and layout as the ones on higher floors. just a larger outside space. Parking could be a problem in the late evenings depending on which street (obviously the ones closer to the community centre and the other stand alone coffee shops etc can get more crowded). Each appartment has only one allocated parking slot as far as im aware. and security is aware of ur allocated slot and quite strict so you could get fined if you park unauthourised. having said that, we never really faced a problem because you only tended to take one car out mostly post work anyway and even when we took both, we found a space somewhere in a few mins. no more difficult than a mall on a weekday - there are spaces, they just might not be the closest.

Does anyone else find that book depository is much more expensive than amazon? is that just the books i'm looking at or is it an experience that others are having is what im checking... i found that on 5 books, the amzon cost including shipping was slightly less than the cost of just the books in BD. And shipping in Amazon is almost 80% of the cost of books in most cases, just to put that into perspective. Also, another question, do the books actually arrive in the stipulated 5-8 days from BD? the downside for Amazon is that they do take forever to deliver here and if im paying similar amounts (regardless of whether its on shipping or the books themselves, i'd rather use the folks who deliver quicker). Phew... that sounded ramble-y. hopefully someone gets it and has an answer :P :)

Was at my nail place yesterday and saw it advertised so asked. Its Nail Zone btw, the one on Jumeirah Beach road opposite the beach park... The have the 'brazilian blowout' brand and the associated literature (this is the only place i've found where they have the actual brand in dubai, most others have variations on the keratine treatment). They said prices start at 1500 for like chin length hair. Mine is just below shoulder and she said it would be about 2200-2500. Lasts 3-4 months and you have to use thier recommended after care - a brand called Acai. Apparently they have an offer on where the starting price has been lowered to 1200 and you get the aftercare (shampoo n condiitoner free). Maybe call them and check - 043446969.

If you're interested in novelty cakes (seeing as its for a lil girl) the bakery at the Radisson in Deira do them. You just email them a picture of whatever you want and they create it (the last one we did was a manolo blahnik shoe box with a shoe for a shower). It was about 450 for 2.5 kg and i ordered it about 2 days ahead. They also have a huge catalogue of cake designs for different ocassions that they can email. they do any flavour/buttercream filling on the inside. the outside is fondant for the decorating. Bit out of the way since im on the other end of town, but worth it i find.

They often have offers as well for free shipping if you order a certain amount, so be sure to check that out (missed it once :() Further tip... they usually send a discount card with each order for the next order so if you're ordering several items it might make sense to do it in the susbsequent order/s. http://cuff-daddy.commerce-search.net/search?catalog=yhst-36182171232078&query=lego&x=37&y=14 Not sure if that helps at all :)

I need to get a good firm but cheap mattress (not Ikea) - where is the best place? Was going to take a trip to Homecentre - are there any other good places that are cheap...... TIA Karama/Zabeel, the bit opposite Zabeel park (i.e. if you're coming from the garhoud direction, you'd pass lamcy etc and take the karama exit that brings you over a 'bridge' and you turn right at 'Al Adil Supermarket' and what used to be choitrams). On your left, down that road, there are atleast 5 stores for mattresses. They all do orthopaedic and spring mattresses and some even have the new memory foam ones. They make it to measure as well. We got a king (approx) orthopaedic with a pillow top for about 600 or 650 for the guest room. Its great. They deliver and everything. Have only ever got my mattresses from this area for the last 6-7 years. Never had a problem. Pick the cheapest and go with it, theyre all more or less the same. Also, haggle a bit :D

I have a load of organic tomatoes that only have about a day left in them before they go bad - any suggestions for something to make with them? TIA. Maybe try oven drying them? (cut in half and put on a wire rack - with a pan under to catch juices, cut side up - can season with a lil salt pepper olive oil and herbs if you like, but very lil coz it concentrates. some people like to remove seeds n pulp so it makes things quicker but id leave them in - seems a waste. Leave in a 100C oven or the lowest setting you have for between 2-8 hours depending on the size of your tomatoes. Check every hour or so after the first 2-3 to remove the done ones if they are of diff sizes.) and put them in olive oil to preserve with some dried herbs to have your own batch of 'sundried tomatoes'. A bit of a time intensive process but not hard cos it just sits in the oven.

Hi TruBlu, timing depends on when their next batch of maids is due in. We waited about 3 weeks from enquiry to maid in our house and I understand this was quick. This may have changed. When the maids arrive they stay at the Howdra house for about a week for some training and attend interviews during this time too. From what I know they only deal with maids from the Philippines. Contracts are for 2yrs. Costs 2300AED per month, around 2000AED once off finder fee plus they keep at 5000AED security cheque of sorts. You supply all the post dated cheques upfront and they are cashed each month. Howdra pay for the flight home at the end of the 2 years and everything else really. We have paid nothing else. We signed a contract with Howdra, but no other sponsorship papers etc and have paid no other money to anyone. Happy to answer more questions. You can email me at dingdubai at hotmail.com Hi Ding... is it still ok to email you with some questions on this? Thinking of going this route from sheer desperation! Got some paperwork through from them and had a few questions and thought it'd be good to hear from someone with experience. Let me know. PS: for everyone's information, the price seems to have increased. Its now 2500 per month at both Howdra and Explorer (the finders/admin/service fee is 2500 + a 5000 security cheque - not cashed). The short term is 4000 at the former and 3000 at the other (1-3 months. No admin/service fee.)

Ugggg... that sucks! I've had it since the end-ish of my first trimester and it just won't stop (week 31 now). In the beginning (till after the 12 week mark) i wasnt given anything... had to manage with 'natural'. Maybe try inhaling steam - it clears the airways. Either with nothing in it or with vicks/ecalyptus in it. A hot steam humidifier in your room can help too. havent got around to trying that, but my doctor recommended it. Also, you can get saline nasal rinses/sprays at the pharmacy which can help - i tried that one, helps temporarily. Lately i've been given Flixonase (its a spray - corticosteriod, and has been cleared by both my GP and Obs for use past first trimester because the absorption is minimal and they say its safer than a panadol). I was asked to use it twice a day for 4 days and then taper it off to once for another 6 days. Havent used it that much.. tend to stop after a couple of days (since it helps quite quickly and i feel better not using meds unless its dire). Maybe its not ideal... since i've had to go in for a couple of sprays since then on several ocassions... but hey i'm more comfortable having a few puffs than staying on it for weeks. Maybe ask you Obs about this or something similar at your next visit? good luck... and i hope the steam etc work for you in the meanwhile.

Ladies... any advice for me on which one to spring for? Was looking to get a dual electric. Saw these 2 and they seem to be similarly priced (although they do come packaged with a whole lot of non essential extras to justify the higher price tag!). They said at the store that the Medela Freestyle was the Swing with a dual pump and can be used hands free. 1. Has anyone used either and would you recommend it? 2. Whats the difference between getting a double and 2 singles (sorry if that sounds silly - but as i said there is a good difference - 500-700 AED - between 2 singles and a double because of all the extras - like ice packs and carry bags and the like, which i really don't want...). Would appreciate your thoughts.

Im 28 along and still wear a regular tankini. it seems quite roomy and looks like it might last another couple of months (although my bump seems to be on a determined growth mission at the mo :D). I got mine at marks and spencer. they sell seperates and i got a regular size bottom with a larger size top. that way i figure if it gets ruined i can replace the top for much later (figure it'll work even post partum till i'm back to size). I didnt find it easy to get maternity swimwear here, hence this route.

Didn't really see at doctor at FMC becuase it was just a blood test. Went in immediately after my NT scan at City and they'd said the lab tech wasnt available that day. Called the nurse at City and she worked her magic and got them to take the blood anyway. Was a bit worried because the nurse at FMC who finally took the blood was clearly not the person who usually did this. But it worked out ok... hey we've done enough blood tests in this part of the world anyway - and i've had some pretty painful pricks from some incompetent people! The good thing is they are quite quick and you find out your results in a couple of days max which is what you want in these screening situations. The agony of waiting weeks for a hospital to let you know would've probably killed me! I'm 25 weeks along YJB! Can't wait. Good luck with your scans. I've heard good things about FMC in general. Some friends did their antenatal classes with them as well and were very happy. So thats something to think about for later.

YJB... i think it depends on the doctor at City Hospital. I am with Dr Yuliya and had both my NT scan at 12 weeks as well as Anomaly (morphology they call it) scan at 20 weeks at city. For the bloodwork however, i was sent to Fetal Medicine (though i was given a choice the recommendation was clear :D). The results from there were sent directly to the doctor who then did the calculatations and gave me a result. For me, they said the screening tests would be payable seperately, but the 12 week scan wound up being covered (they had said AED 750) while for the 20 week one it was AED 1200 (the lady ahead of me asked for a discount and got a 10% so i pitched in with a request for what it was worth and got it!). Good luck.

What i did want to tell you though was about Dr. Yuliya at City whom i know you were looking at. I saw her last week and wanted to update you... yes its confirmed that she is leaving City. She will however be staying in Dubai at a clinic with birth privileges at the major hospitals she said. She will confirm the details at my next appointment since i think its a bit early yet - she's leaving in the middle of May she said. will update you next month if you're still keen. Cheers

Have my next appointment with her this Thursday (after a month). Had no idea. Do you know when she's leaving maariyah?

Ginger ale in small quantities worked for me. As did eating a cracker every hour or so between meals (or what you can keep down). Spinney's has some decent flavours of the gourmet cheese crackers so maybe you can see if some of those work to replace the ginger biscuits?

I changed from Dr. Amala as well. Too much meds. Wanted me to take Duphaton straight off, with no indication that it was required. Then wanted me to take Glucophage to 'correct any possible hormone surges' and gave me 10mg of Folic acid (as against 400microgram recommended as my new doctor told me, apparently such large does, while not harmful, are unnecssary unless you epilepsy etc). Maybe some people like the cautious, lets make sure nothing goes wrong approach. It was not for me though. If your insurance covers it (which most do these days) try City. 2 of the doctors there come highly recommended Dr. Elsa and Dr. Yuliya. Appoitments take a while, the latter being a bit easier to get an appt with. Good luck.

There is a company in Dubai that can get it from Kuwait on request. The contact is Ahmed Ferra - Choice Trading Company FZE, Tel. +9714-2088469, Mobile +971503698450 I had got in touch with them, but eventually got it when i travelled so didn't follow it up. He was pretty helpful when i got in touch, so give that a try maybe if no one else can help? Good luck!

I'm going to Lauren at the Dubai Osteopathic Health Centre as well. Been to her previously and she's great. You could also try Malcolm Gregory at the same place. Think he's the head of the centre. Very experienced. Think sessions with him are a little more expensive though, from what i remeber. You'd need to check. Lauren seems to be experienced with women's issues and kids from what i've read.
