I agree with Derien. I have to admit that I will "feel" a baguette that I buy in the supermarket as sometimes they are bone dry but always touch the bit that is covered in the paper bag. Also if the bread is wrapped in plastic it will go all soft, not nice :(

I've only made friends so far that have toddlers too. I should start seeking out parents to teenagers next by the sounds of things :D I'm not sure how I feel about using agency maids, I guess I just worry how DD would react if she woke up (which she very rarely does but you know if it's going to happen it will be when we decide to go out). I was just spoiled at home having grandparents and a sister who would happily babysit at the drop of a hat What about starting a babysitting circle with your friends who have a toddler so you can each go out with respective DHs in turn. Or organise for the DHs to meet and get them all to babysit together on Friday and go out with the mums for brunch

All my simpathy to you and your family Izsy. I think funerals are for the living to commemorate the dead. Think long and hard about whether you want to go and the reasons why. When my step dad passed, I thought I was going to the funeral to support my mum and be there for her, it is only afterwards that I realised I needed to be there for myself too especially since I didn't get to say good bye before he died as I was living abroad.

Met my DH on holidays in Jordan just over 5 years ago. He left everything to follow me on my already planned round the world trip and then to Switzerland. 4 years and a baby later we finally got married and I left everything to follow him to Dubai and I don't think either of us regret anything.

I only know Fun City at Ibn Battuta and it's good and not too expensive however it can get quite nois with all the game machines in there.. There is a new play area that has opened in the new Al Barsha Mall called Cheeky Monkey. I tried it on Thursday and it's good fun. AED45 for an hour but I think they have a special offer on at mo.

You seem to have all the replies you need but as a last resort there is also Hilli park which has a shaded play area. My 2 yo DS enjoyed playing there and I think that and eating ice cream at the Hotel where his favourite bits, never mind about the Heritage Village or the Hatta Pools which had him interested but only so much.... Have a great trip!

Hey Khatoon, glad that you are alright, such a traumatic experience. When I lost my step dad a few years ago and my life was not going well I was in a similar frame of mind. Life is too short. You have to find what "rocks your boat" though. For me it was travelling and seeing new places so that is exactly what I did, packed everything I owned and put in storage and travelled for 6 months and I never looked back, from the moment I made the descision everything seemed to fit into place! But for you it might something simple like learning a new language or skill or going somewhere you'd always dreamed off on holidays. Don't let others tell you what it should be, you need to find it inside you!

I've been doing Boogie Babies with DS since he was 18 month old and he loves it. He doesn't always participate in the class but will do the moves and sing the songs once we are back home so he is def getting something out of it. Saying that the class can be good or bad and will depend on the teacher as well as the other parents/kids attending. You could always do a trial class and see if you enjoy it.

Great morning I'm having, first my iron stopped working just when the agency maid is here to do the ironing and then when I decide to hoover my floors whilst she is busy I discover there are little maggots like creature living in my Dyson and it stinks when I put it on (didn't notice them straight away). Any tips on cleaning it? I do feel like throwing it away but it is not exactly a cheap one.... ETA the maggots seem to only bit in the bit that holds the dust. edited by Swiss Sandy on 04/04/2012

Hi notheragain, just over a year ago I was just like you, my DS was a bit older but not much. I'm very shy so I took small steps to try and meet people. We started by going to our community pool on a regular basis, you do end up meeting other mums there and even if it is once in a while always nice to have a chat with an adult :), then we started Boogie Babies and DS did all the hard work and made a good friend there so I "had" to befriend the mum too... We also started going to EW Coffee morning every week and at first only made one friend. Now I know a lot of the ladies going there, it is quite good fun. DS is now in nursery 2 mornings a week so I finally started doing things for myself like going to the gym, for a proper swim, etc. I also try once a month to go do something Dubai on my own just because I like taking photos of things and with an active 2 yo it's a bit complicated. Like others have said there is a lot to do in Dubai and the great thing is it does not even have to cost you lots of money!

Until you manage to change her routine EW has a mums and tots meet up in the afternoon. I know she is not a tot yet but lots of mums with younger ones go to those meetings anyway and it'll get you out the house and meet new people.

I've never hired a mini bus but we did hire a van from UK to Switzerland and the main problem we had is that we wanted a one way hire which proved to be impossible. We ended up doing a return trip with the van so technically as long as you then drive it back to the UK it should not be a problem. Also it should not be a problem taking any vehicule from any of the major hire companies on to the continent.

You could visit the wat with the reclining Buddha, so big even children should be impressed. A ride on the metro, tuk tuks or on the klongs (or if closed on the river itself) If you need to get away from the hustle and bustle for a few hours I'd recommend Jim Thomson's house, nice peaceful spot in the heart of Bangkok and interesting as well.

If it's just a playground you want the Lakes Club has a playground outside by the restaurant's terrace. If you need somewhere where you can leave your child then the Fitness First (Ex-Hayya) in the Meadows has a daycare next to it (run by Jebel Ali nursery I think). HTH

We are a bilingual household and 2 yo DS just started nursery in English as the most practical choice for us. Before he started he was perfectly bilingual but now he speaks a lot more English so I know that when he goes to school (most likely one with a British curriculum as there is a high chance we might go live in Britain one day) I'll have to do more formal French teaching myself and eventually find a tutor as I want him to be perfectly bilingual. Saying that we made that decision because the French curriculum doesn't suit us since if DS goes to French speaking school it will be in Switzerland. It was a hard decision to make but I'm happy with it. Whichever solution you choose I think once you've made the decision you'll have to stick with it as long as you are in Dubai and help you children with the other language and lefs face it for them it's win/win as one way or another they will learn more than one language

I went there many moons ago as a kid in July and I remember having lots of fun but also remember that by early afternoon we suffering from the heat and it made watching the parade a bit uncomfortable (very few shady spots) I also had a heatstroke while at Epcot but saying that I was not used to the heat and humidity and certainly not used to be out in full sun in the middle of the day. edited by Swiss Sandy on 23/03/2012
