my 7.5 month old sometimes still needs help getting off to sleep during the day (gentle patting on the bottom while he is lying in his cot) and at night starts to fall asleep feeding and is so drowsy by the time he's finished that I can put him down and he'll fall asleep..now that he is old enough to find his dummy (have 2 in the cot attached to loveys/cloths) and pop it back in he sleeps straight through, or at least if he wakes he doesn't bother us (have seen him through the video monitor find his dummy and go back to sleep). In the early morning if he wakes he's quite happy to play for a bit and then often falls back asleep until around 7.30. We did a little bit of sleep training at the 6 month mark (because he was waking every 45 min to an hour through the night and we were at the end of our tether with all the rocking and dummy replacing) which luckily he seemed to "get" straight away and after 20 mins of angry crying the first night, barely woke through the night again, except later when teething /sick/moving and banging head on sides of cot, where we always went to him straight away. So I'm not going to tell you whether or not to sleep train, or co-sleep or anything, but to simply answer your question that yes, from my perspective, my 7 month old is able to self soothe. But on the other hand sometimes he can be left to fall asleep and sometimes he needs a bit of help so we play it by ear...I'm just happy that once he's asleep we're good to go! All babies are different and they all get there eventually Hugs :)

Went to Toro Toro a few weeks back - food was really really delicious although as another poster said, on the pricey side! They specialise in small shared dishes - would highly recommend the corn pancakes with duck and haloumi...delicious! Prob need 2-3 per person depending on how hungry you are and this is where it can get pricey! They also do the typical brazilian churasco (meats carved at table). mmm getting hungry thinking about it! edited by sydneygal on 18/12/2011

Echoing LovingLife - don't beat yourself up... I agree, sounds like the milk/dairy. The same thing happened with my DS when we were giving him normal Aptamil (green mucousy poo and nappy rash), but on Aptamil Comfort he is fine (has MUCH lower % of lactose). Your DS still needs milk, but perhaps switching the formula (unless of course you are BF) and getting back to solids 3 times a day will fix things...but definitely talk to your pediatrician too. You haven't been starving your baby at all but she does need her solids now, especially things like iron/protein etc... Good luck and hugs

I feel for you...that sounds really tough :( have you ever looked at this site - www.thebabysleepsite.com? She has lots of good articles and also does one on one consultations...I was on the verge of contacting her when we saw Cecile... do you think it could also have to do with the fact that you are pregnant? Just a guess here, but maybe your DS also senses another one is coming and is wanting more of your/your DH's attention? really hope you can sort it out soon.

Hi Aussiepup, as JoannaS said, how old is your LO? I have heard the older they are, the more difficult CIO can be but it always depends on the individual. My DS is 6 and a half months old and we did some CIO about a month ago but only let him cry for 20 mins then gave him his dummy and helped him back to sleep. We luckily only had to do it once the first night and he slept through and then occasionally in the weeks after he would wake and we would wait but after about 5-10min he would settle himself. If it ever gets to 20 mins of being awake with any sign of crying or whinging, we always go to him so he knows we always will come, just not immediately. Now if he wakes he tends to just chat and we leave him. I can feel your pain though as listening to them cry is awful, it was hard enough for 20 mins just the few times let alone listening to it for that long!! We used Cecile De Scally during this bit of training - are you using her or just doing it on your own? It can really help to have someone to advise and support you...Also, is your LO going through any teething or anything else that might be upsetting him? Having said all that, if the 10-12noon nap works, why rock the boat? You could always see if he needs a shorter nap or catnap later in the day to get through to 7pm, or put your LO to bed earlier? What time does your LO get up in the morning? We are up with our DS around 7, then he goes down for 45 min to an hour about 9am, then has another 2 hour (sometimes mores, sometimes less) nap around 12-2ish and then he is good to go until bedtime (around 6.30pm). Hope you sort this out soon - I know how difficult it can be with LO that doesn't sleep well!! Hugs.

They were estimating my DS at 4.8kgs at the final ultrasounds...and he ended up being 4.02 :) So they can be way off with these estimates! I ended up with a c-sec due to being 2 weeks over with DS not even descending and a low placenta so can't speak for a natural birth but my sister gave birth to her 4.5kilo DD naturally (2 weeks early) with no issues :)

LOL!! I feel your frustration luv and DS is only 6 months old! All he wants to do is roll over now and grab things (including the nappy) and I'm already switching to pull ups which are easier - can you try those and stand her up? My sis always amazed me - her little girl was always sooo squirmy but she would somehow manage to change her nappy with her on her lap!

PS - already been to Shimmers, Pai Thai/most Madinat restaurants, loved Asado at Palace Hotel...so maybe something along those lines? Any recommendations for any of the restaurants in the Zabeel Saray on the Palm? Thanks!

hi Kie, as nutty said do you notice any tired cues (sneezing, hiccups, rubbing eyes, yawning etc) and do you notice that they happen at a specific time...for example, my DS at that age could only stay awake for about an hour and a half at a time (now at 6 months its 2 hours plus or more in the afternoon). I'd imagine that if she slept today from 1.10pm to 2pm that she wouldn't be ready for a nap by 3pm which is perhaps why she protested? And then it could be that by 4/4.30 she was probably too overtired to settle? As for rocking to sleep - if you don't have to I'd try and avoid that (speaking from experience of having to rock to sleep for quite some time!)....you could try putting her on her side, patting her back and shhing softly. I think fixed nap times are a good idea, but also be flexible depending on her wake up times and how long she can stay awake for. I find that if my DS hasn't slept well at lunchtime (on a good day 2 hours) then I'll take him for a walk in the pram in the afternoon for a 20 min nap around 3.30/4pm. It is nice to get out, he falls asleep without too much hassle and then we're good to go until bedtime. Perhaps you could try doing this for the last short nap if it's easier than just putting her down in her cot again? And then even if she doesn't sleep she'll at least have rested and not be too overstimulated and you'll be less stressed. As for any sleep training, as kiwi said you need to think about what you are comfortable with. We did a bit of training with DS around that age (as he was waking up to every hour through the night!!) where we left him for at least 20 mins before going to him and very quickly he learnt to resettle himself. We have a video monitor though so at least we could watch to see that he was OK while he protested. However this was at night as his naps were OK....these days he still wakes up occasionally during his naps and I'll leave him for a little while (as generally he is just mucking around and playing, not crying) to see if he'll resettle but if he doesn't I'll go and pat/shush him and offer dummy and then if he STILL won't sleep I'll go out of the room and come back in and cheerfully announce it's time to wake up and get him up and try again later (often in pram as mentioned above). Hope this helps :) PS - solids aren't necessarily the answer to sleep issues, but I'm sure you know that.

also in terms of feeding times, perhaps you can make these shorter as the day goes by to get her to bed earlier? Our schedule for example is 7am milk/solids, 11am milk/solids, 2.30pm milk, 4.30pm offer water, 5pm solids, 6.15 milk - then 11pm dreamfeed...

Hi M, Glad things are generally going well for you :) I think every baby is different, but DS has started sleeping 11-12 hours at night finally. He does wake sometimes and go back to sleep (or he may need help occasionally) but generally goes down about 6.30pm and is up anywhere between 6-7am. With your LO's last feed, do you do this in her room in semi darkness? DS also goes a bit hyper after his bath although I often think its because he's getting quite tired by then, but after his massage I turn the lights down super low to feed him. He's also on solids already but I do split this and give him his solids around 5 and milk at 6.15 - if he had his solids at 6.15 too he'd be too hyper (and messy!!) to go straight to sleep. DS also had an internal clock waking him at 5.45 for a while there, but now that he's working out how to sleep on his tummy this is starting to resolve....not sure if tummy sleeping is something your LO is already doing. As for the night feed, whether it would help or not I'm not sure but could be worth trying. DS is still having a dreamfeed and he is 6 months old now and eating solids 3 times a day (am starting to slowly reduce the amount though) Hope you can work things out - I did find personally that moving his bedtime earlier made a huge amount of difference - is there anyway you can tweak your schedule to get her fed earlier and to be earlier? Also having more structured naps during the day (he has morning nap, lunchtime longer nap, and often then is fine until bedtime although occasionally has a 20 min catnap in the afternoon) helped us. :)

thanks for your support as always :) I know I'm doing the right thing for me but it's still hard to not feel a bit guilty...still though I'm glad we got to breastfeed until now as there were so many times in the first painful 7-8 weeks when I almost gave up! Well just got him down for a nap - it's a struggle these days as all he wants to do is flip onto his tummy and can't work out how to put his head down during the day...I was thinking of you training your DS! Yesterday I tried for AGES to get his little head down during a nap and as soon as I would step away, up it would pop! Last night though he slept from about 4am on his tummy - was prob too tired to fight it then :)

yeah I've tried that as he definitely seems to have a preference for the right side...these days on the left he only takes a little bit and then starts blowing raspberries as if he's not impressed by the flow anymore LOL! It's hard...I do feel a bit sad to be weaning (he doesn't seem to be though...no loyalty to mum's milk!!) although I know I need to get my own body sorted...feels like he's growing way too quickly... :(

He's a hungry munchkin. :) Offered some top up today after his 2.30 feed (only 60ml as experiment) and that was gone instantly so perhaps I need to offer more...it's hard to tell how much he's getting from the breastfeeds now, I never really feel very full anymore... any other advice welcome :)

well after that last poo yesterday there were no more until this morning...and so far he has done 2 very healthy looking normal poos (sweet potato colour LOL after dinner last night). Didn't hear back from the doc so I called the clinic this morning and she is away for 3 days....so may just keep an eye on it and monitor him. We used the Comfort formula last night so perhaps that helped and will stick to food he is OK with for a few days before introducing anything new. Think I will stay away from the sachets for a while as well...

Thanks Kiwi (can always rely on you for a detailed and helpful reply :) ) he hasn't got a fever and seems perfectly happy and full of energy. Tonight might stick to some sweet potato again then...was going to try some butternut squash and potato but maybe not a good idea (they don't seem allergenic)? His last poo was pretty normal looking. Have put the mucousy poos in the fridge (tightly wrapped!!) to take in for analysis, hopefully tomorrow. re: feeding on demand at night, he's not really waking in the night at all (until 5-6am which is the dummy issue!) - I wake him for the dreamfeed. Was going to just give the Aptamil comfort tonight rather than the No.1 in case the extra lactose in that is the problem.

will do, although I doubt it is the vegies...? Thinking more about the formula perhaps being the issue, hmmm. Still waiting to hear back from his doc. Just tried to take his poo sample to the docs downstairs in JBR where he has been before but unfortunately they are closed. He just had another poo which was slightly green but no mucous.

I know...hence the call in to the doc this morning (well I sent a text to her) but I haven't heard a reply yet. Will try and call soon if I don't hear back... No external source. His poo since that one with blood (which I've kept) has just been mucousy without blood (kept that too). I'm thinking if it's an intolerance it must be the formula as it seems weird that he'd be intolerant to fruit/veg, or am I wrong in thinking that? Could a baby be allergic to stone fruits? The spate with the raw bum occured shortly after I gave some pear/apricot from a sachet, and then this mucous now after a banana/peach sachet? Just to be clear, 99% of what he's been eating has been homecooked, these were just trials...?

thanks for the link Greenish....his last poo earlier was a bit like picture 11, though perhaps not that much mucous. I also heard it at the time and it was slightly explosive sounding...eek! Just been reading about lactase overload, perhaps this could be the issue too as he did drink quite alot of formula last night?

ok so now wondering, could it be lactose that is the problem? We'd been giving him Aptamil Comfort for the FF he has during the day and had been giving him Aptamil 1 at his 6.30pm feed as it was higher in calorie content (on the advice of someone we had been seeing). We had no issues with this, and he was being BF at 11pm (taking both sides). Last night was the first night he had Aptamil 1 at 6.30pm (240ml) and also at 11pm (180ml). I've just checked the cans and Comfort is 19.7g lactose in 100g, whereas Aptamil 1 is 51g! Will just give him the Comfort tonight for the evening feeds to see if that helps and hopefully will hear from doc in the meantime...any thoughts would be very welcome... PS - I was lactose intolerant as a baby and had goats milk, and weaned off any milk by about 7 months!

kiwi...how did you teach your one to tummy sleep? Mine doesnt know how to put his head down either when on his tummy...for the most part he sleeps on side and on back but I think eventually he might tummy sleep if he can work it out! I agree with you re: props and also about tweaking sleep timings. Getting him to bed earlier (6.30 instead of 7-7.30) definitely has helped DS, as well as more structured naptimes (in our case GF timings work, but generally he gets tired 2 hours after being up).

hey twinbutterfly...sorry to hear you are going through a rough patch with you LO...i know what that's like. My DS was a fab sleeper from birth to about 6-8 weeks when it all started going downhill and only in the past few weeks has he finally settled down. I think alot of his waking was due to various things at different times in our particular case - the dummy, me being in the same room and attending to him way too quickly, growth and developmental spurts etc... I hear you on Gina Ford books, I ended up buying 2 as well and actually am now following a loose Gina plan during the day which seems to work for him. He is basically up between 630 and 7, feeds at 7 (breastfeed) followed by small amount of fruit/porridge, sleeps 2 hours after his initial waking for about 45min to 1 hour and a half depending, feeds again at 11am (bottle plus solids, maybe 2 cubes), asleep again after 2 hours of waking and sleeps from 1 hour and a half to 2 hours. He still wakes from naps often but I get him back to sleep again. Feeds again (bf) around 2.30pm and then we usually go for a walk and spend time outside, he might nap for 20 mins or so in the pram around 4ish. Solids at 5pm (biggest meal, 2-3 cubes) and then bath by 6pm at latest, feed of bottle (240ml) and in bed by 6.30-6.45. I then wake him to DF at around 11pm. Don't underestimate the jetlag, travelling to Oz was a nightmare for us, especially going that way and he too was waking every 30 min to an hour and I too gave up and had him in bed with me! We went to see Cecile when we got back and I had visions of her making us go cold turkey on the dummy but actually she said it was fine to keep to get to sleep as long as he knew that he had to go back to sleep in the night without it. So first night we had to leave him for 20 min and he cried, but then after we went back to settle him (were allowed to give dummy after 20 min) he slept through! Since then it's been much better, he still occasionally wakes and may cry 5-10 mins but usually now goes back to sleep by himself. I moved out of the room too which I also think has helped. The other thing I do is use Limeflower tea (Linden) which I got at the organic to make up his last bottle and also give him some with his solids just as the tea. A naturopath friend recommended it in Oz as it is supposed to be fab to help babies sleep and I thought why not try it. Since I started using it he has really settled down so I have to say in his case it does work. He also seems to be sleeping better since starting solids - whether this is a contributing factor or just lucky timing I'm not sure. Lastly, he does wear an amber necklace for teething wihch I put on his ankle at night (with a sock so he doesn't kick it off)... hope some of this helps...any q's just let me know... x
