I recently bought some expensive free range chicken from Waitrose that was within date however when I opened the pack it absolutely stank! Took it back and at least the staff appeared to be mortified (couldn't deny the smell!) and let me exchange....not sure they did anything else though. Have also bought the local Organic milk once (organilicious) and within one day it went off :(

Hi ladies, Can anyone give me some guidance as to the steps we need to take if we are going to sponsor a Filipino maid who is currently sponsored by another family at the end of her existing contract? Her employers are going back to the UK when her contract ends and we will be taking her on. Does she need to exit and re enter Dubai or can we just process everything without her having to do that? Any pointers from anyone who has recently done this would be much appreciated! Thanks :)

Had a phenomenal meal recently for my birthday at Table 9 at the Hilton on the Creek. We did the table 9 chefs degustation but they offer other degustations as well as a vegetarian one. The location is not ideal but the food is well worth travelling for and the chef Darren Velvick is absolutely lovely. We were able to go into the kitchen to observe and chat to the chefs and had a good chat with him too. Lovely touches were some take away chocs and granola with signed menus. Would highly recommend.

My hubby and I were very slow lol....dated for four years before moving in together, largely due to me being younger and very independent and him having been on his own for such a long time, plus I had my own flat etc, lived together for another three years before tying the knot....not sure why it took so long but we never felt a rush or pressure and did things at our own pace. Now married for 7 years so been together a long time and very happy! There are no set rules for these things, do what works for you!!

My 3 year old DS tried to give up his naps about a month or so ago but it was largely because we finally got rid of his dummy and our whole routine went out the window. He previously would run to bed for a nap and sleep for 2.5 hours in the afternoon! With no dummy he just screamed and refused to nap and then became a total tantrumy nightmare all afternoon. We would put him to bed earlier but boy was it difficult. We tried star charts, time out....nothing was working. So I changed things up a bit as I knew that he still needed a nap....we did quiet time on the couch where he could pick a DVD to watch on low volume but he had to lie down with his pillow and blanket. This ensured his body rested even if he didn't sleep and then one day I was sitting with him and said why don't you just close your eyes darling, Mummy is here....offered a small bribe too lol. Now he naps almost every day on the couch for around an hour and is so much the better for it. He always asks me to hold his hand lol but goes to sleep within minutes. Just doesn't want to nap in his room and I am ok with that! He goes to bed around 8ish which works for us as DH often gets home after 7 so they get some time together. Only you know your child and if they still need that sleep....if you think she still needs it maybe just try a different approach. Good luck, it's tough! X

Kiwis, on days we are in the car he absolutely nods off straight away and sometimes transfers....but I really don't want to have to drive him every day! Hard to get a sleeping 16kg out of a car as well when preg! Ah well we shall have to just see how things go.... Kewlzany, our son has always gone to sleep by himself....now Daddy tells him two stories, they say goodnight and he goes off to sleep....not sure what you can try but 15 mins isn't too long....I have friends whose kids are the same and it can take an hour and often they end up falling asleep too!!

Until about two weeks ago my almost 3 year old DS had a great routine of up around 7, nursery a few mornings a week until 12, lunch then nap from about 2-430. Play date or play at home after, dinner at 6ish and in bed by half eight at the latest with bath etc starting around 745. However since we have given his dummy to the tooth fairy he absolutely refuses to nap in the afternoon resulting in a tired and grumpy boy prone to massive tantrums all the way to bed time, which is now between 7-730 :( he definitely still needs a nap but I was getting tired of the fight and ensuing screaming tantrum each day (am 6 mths preg too) so he has quiet time in the living room after lunch either reading or watching a film on TV lying on the couch. After that no more TV for the day and from dinner time we keep things quiet. If anyone has any tips to try and get us back to napping I would really appreciate it!!! Have tried sticker charts, bribery, you name it!!

Have mainly been to Italy pre kids or while pregnant, but would absolutely recommend a wonderful villa in Tuscany, located near San Gimignano. We went before we had our son but it was very family friendly. Great locations for day trips and staff are fantastic. http://www.ilborghettotuscanholidays.com I also agree with LovelyLilies, the CinqueTerre is gorgeous. We stayed in Monterosso and also did trips all around the neighbouring towns. Depending on how long you are going for, don't try to do too much, Italy is a wonderful place to slowly enjoy and explore. Other parts to consider for a different type if Italian holiday are Sicily and Sardinia :)

We recently moved our toddler into a big bed and bought from PBK, admittedly in the sale which helped. We wanted to invest in a good quality bed that would last him a long time and I believe beds and mattresses are worth investing in since we spend almost a third of our lives in them! The bed is solid, extremely comfortable and he loves it. I also know friends who have bought beds for their kids in Ikea and love them too, so whatever works for you and is in your budget. There are also lots of other choices in between as others have suggested. Good luck! edited by sydneygal on 09/02/2014

I have to strongly disagree SJ1968...I've been involved with Volunteer in UAE very closely for quite some time and can only say good things about their founder, the amount of time and energy she selflessly puts in for others is incredible, for no personal gain. She will always do what she can to help and has tirelessly put in thousands of hours over the years and helped so many in need. I could go on and on about how she has ALWAYS put herself before others....but i don't need to. Kalee, I would encourage you to make up your own mind and see for yourself.

Why don't you change his napoy before you feed him rather than after? Or, if you are breastfeeding, offer one side, change nappy, then other side....that's what I used to do. Or if all else fails, try the double nappy trick. I found the pampers active pull ups were good for leaks as they design for boys vs girls so hold the wee in the right places.

I respect your opinion Mumofmoo, and also maintain mine, as a mum who did circumcise but now regrets it. My own mum is a medical professional who believed it was the right thing to do simply because of how she was trained...doesn't mean it is right.

Hi greengoddess I used Dr Ou for quite some time before I conceived my DS. I am convinced she helped as before I started seeing her my cycles were all over the place and she managed to get me on a 30 day cycle with consistent ovulation around day 14/15. I was charting at the time too and noticed that after seeing her my temperature rise after ovulation was a lot stronger and over 24 hours as it should be rather than a slow, weaker rise over a few days. So she definitely helped I think, although I was also doing a raft of other things too ie taking supplements, eating extremely healthily etc. she is very knowledgeable when it comes to fertility so I would definitely recommend. Good luck!

As for the cleaner and more hygienic reason, frankly that is not true. A circumcised p€his requires more care! skin being pulled back to clean constantly etc compared to an intact one where u just have to wipe it clean. The foreskin also acts as a barrier to faeces and pee for an infant and to protect what's underneath. When they become retractable later it is surely not hard to teach a boy how to keep himself clean. edited by sydneygal on 16/01/2014

Against. Our DS is circumcised and it is my biggest regret. At the time I thought I was doing the right thing for health reasons, so he would "look like dad" (realise how ridiculous that is now) etc etc. unfortunately I only came across information that made me realise we had made the wrong decision way after the fact and as I said it is my biggest regret :( I hope one day he will forgive us and realise we had just done what we thought was best at the time. Please do your research, there is a lot out there. Read about the complications of circumcision, the function of the foreskin both as a baby and adult, watch a video or two about the process. Don't do what I did and just go along with it and then regret it. Of course I realise there are those who do it for religious or cultural reasons, and I'm not judging anyone, I just wish someone had helped me see the other side when I could have made a different decision. As far as our sons circumcision it was done with plastibell at American hospital, he had a fair amount of bleeding which was horrible although it healed fine. He does have some adhesions (a very common problem) however which were caused later as he was so chubby and well the skin wanted to stick back to when it should be, plus no one ever checked him or advised how to care for it properly. We are leaving it for now as it is not causing any problems, and he can decide later for himself if he wants to do anything about it. This is a very emotive subject. All I will say is do you research, look at both sides of the story and make an educated decision. Good luck x

Hi Ladies, Hoping you can give me some feedback...we are planning a trip to the Maldives in my 2nd trimester with our 2.5 yr old toddler in tow. Any thoughts on the following would be much appreciated!! 1. Is it easier to go via seaplane or boat, bearing in mind the toddler and the fact that I will be 20 something weeks pregnant. We hope to find somewhere that's a short trip by whichever form of transport we choose! 2. Any recs on family friendly but still luxurious resorts? I've read a lot about Lily Beach and have a quote already. Any other recommendations or pros/cons to Lily Beach? Thank you!!

Hi mssassy.....solids on the whole are going to be new to her digestive system, but I would avoid those particular fruits and veg for now as they are all quite constipating. You would be better trying some ripe pear, peach or apricot, but it could be an idea to go back to just breast milk for a day or so to help things settle.

My two cents worth, I would say contact her, well you already have. I had a similar situation years ago when I got married at home, one of my closest friends suddenly went cold after my wedding and we didn't speak for a long time and I'd always wondered why. About a year later we had made the decision to come to Dubai so I wanted to say goodbye and clear the air so I called her. It turned out it was something as silly as the fact that she hadn't been my bridesmaid and one of my other bridesmaids had said something catty to her without my knowledge (I had chosen my two single girlfriends to be bridesmaids, so even my sister wasn't one lol). It was so great to be friends again and sad too as we both realised we had been through tough times in the past year (both had miscarriages) and we could have supported each other. But it wasn't too late and it never is if it's me true friendship. People went perfect and sometimes the smallest things can be blown out of proportion and grudges held too long. Life is short, I'm glad you have been the bigger person and are contacting her. If it doesn't work out, at least you tried. Good luck.

Hi Ladies :) zaika854, my OB is Dr Rosalie Sant who works out of Primavera Medical Clinic at Healthcare City. She operates out of City, American and Welcare. I had my first with her at American as at the time City was quite understaffed and undergoing some big changes. A friend recently delivered with Dr Sant at City as she currently believes thats the best of the 3. I'll be delivering wherever she recommends as totally trust her judgement. Eajla - wow your 4th!! Would also recommend Dr Sant for you too if you are looking, she specialises in high risk pregnancies and was great with my first CS. Hope everyone is feeling well. Another vote for Family and Friends. My DS goes there and absolutely loves it, and adores Joanne, who is so wonderful. She genuinely loves every single kid and they know it. He did a term at Kidville but despite all the extra facilities etc, he never liked it the way he loves going to &F. He literally runs in every day. They have a good indoor play area and it hasn't made a difference to us that there is no outdoor area. We also originally wanted to go to Toddlertown but I'm so happy we ended up at F&F. The love and care they get there is second to none and you really feel like part of a family, rather than just a number compared to some of the bigger nurseries. Jo always has time for a chat too. :)

I would also recommend looking into PIDDDS and dorn therapy which is a extremely effective and gentle spinal alignment method. I was amazed how a few simple exercises fixed my leg length discrepancies. http://www.piddds.com/dubai I know Jose is always booked out way in advance but if you explain your situation she may be able to see your son sooner...however as you can see on the link there are a lot of other practitioners of this method. Definitely worth a try...

My DS seems to get more chesty coughs etc since being in nursery and we use manuka honey and lots of pure vitamin c. The vit c powder mixed in a little juice (it's very sour) is amazing....last night he was coughing, gave him a dose and a teaspoon of honey and we didn't hear a peep for the rest of the night. Also give him lots of fresh juices during coughs/colds....carrot/orange/ginger is a favourite and use extra garlic in his food and reduce dairy. Hope your DD gets better soon. We also use Vicks on back and soles of feet at night.

Definitely drop me an email anytime, I'd be happy to chat about this further. It might be worth seeing Dr Darwish anyway and discussing your daughters history to get his initial feedback and then you can plan a course of action for her next fever. We did this and he agreed with our diagnosis (saying often the parents are the ones who make the right diagnosis!) and we agreed to do further bloods during the next fever. However following our meeting we started our own natural therapies and it was three whole months before he got another fever...and it seemed so mild we didn't contact him right away thinking perhaps this time it was just a virus. I emailed him and he said to bring him in the next day, but by then the fever had gone. :) I did a lot of research on PFAPA and found a support group on yahoo of parents who were trying natural alternatives to the typical steroid treatments and the other main option being tonsillectomy which some have had success with. As our son is only two we had no desire to go down either of those routes and have found using natural therapies to be very beneficial. Dr Darwish was great in that he also didn't want to use any steroids etc and said if we could manage it using natural remedies and Panadol that was preferable. It was so great to talk to someone who knew about periodic fever syndromes....our pediatrician and GP both hadn't heard of it and were very reluctant to think it was anything except recurring viruses or infections. Edited to add that I know nothing about malaria but you should investigate all possibilities. When I read your OP however it just brought me back to how I was feeling and reminded me of our case. edited by sydneygal on 07/09/2013

Hi BintNizam Have you tried looking into periodic fever syndromes? My toddler started getting monthly fevers that would last anywhere between 3-6 days with no major symptoms the doctors could put their fingers on, although occasionally he would get swollen lymph glands, a mouth sore or two and a red throat. We also were put on different antibiotics which never worked so I started keeping track of the times be would get sick. I then started googling and came across the different periodic fever syndromes, and one in particular called PFAPA sounded exactly like what we were dealing with. This particular periodic fever syndrome is completely benign and they grow out of it but its not much fun in the meantime. Have u ever had bloods done during a fever episodes? We noticed his c reactive protein level was sky high (a measure of inflammation) during an episode which also supported a PFAPA diagnosis, although a high result can mean many things as it just measures inflammation in the body. Anyway, we ended up seeing a rheumatologist, Dr Bassel Darwish, who agreed with us that it was most likely PFAPA. I was against the typical treatment for PFAPA which is steroid based, and Dr Darwish supported us in trying whatever natural remedies we wanted to try. After more of my own research we started a regime of upper cervical chiropractic treatments, cod liver oil, higher dosage vitamin c and tart cherry concentrate and made some minor adjustments to his already healthy diet....and now when we do get an episode (every few months or so compared to monthly) it may only last a day or two and we barely have to give any Panadol and can keep the fever at bay with our other natural therapies. Compared to 5-6 day fevers where we were alternating Panadol and nurofen every 4-6 hours it is a huge improvement. I do notice that eating too much of the wrong things can trigger an episode, especially if we have had too many birthday parties for example! Anyway I digress but wanted to let you know what we had been through. Perhaps do some research on the different periodic syndromes to see if anything rings a bell, and I would also recommend seeing Dr Darwish, or perhaps even an immunologist. I believe Dr Loubser also comes very highly recommended. Good luck and if you want to chat further off line you can reach me on caterina underscore strano at yahoo dot com dot au Edited to add that besides these fevers my son is super healthy....barely ever gets anything like a cold for example....so it did seem like such a mystery! I hope this as helped and you get to the bottom of it....I know how worrying it can be. Now when we get a fever I feel much more in control and know how to manage it. edited by sydneygal on 06/09/2013

We just potty trained our DS who is the same age a few weeks back. Started casually whilst in UK with nappy off while home and nappy on while out for a few days, and tried for pees at times that we thought we would have more success like first thing in morning, before and after nap and before bath. About two days in he did his first poo in the potty so we removed nappies altogether (except for sleep). We told him he was a big boy now and we didn't wear nappies anymore and got some cute character undies which he was excited about. Stayed home for about three days, lots of hits and misses, especially with pee, it took a while for the awareness to go from "I'm peeing" to "I need to pee" and just when I thought I was going to give up, he just got it. We were also lucky in that he's a real camel and only pees every 3-5 hours so when we first started going out we would head out straight after a pee and know we were good for a few hours. I didn't reward as in my mind learning how to use the potty/toilet is just another milestone like learning how to crawl or walk and we don't reward those! He was more excited about how proud we were and was proud of himself as a big boy and loved carrying the potty bowl to the loo to dump and flush. Good luck and keep perservering! I would also recommend an Ebook called "oh cr*p potty training" which is downloadable and I found super helpful and in line with my own thinking. You can google it or its author Jamie Glowacki ;)

I am currently in the UK... Messaged her yesterday to say we would buy her a ticket home to help her but haven't heard back from her yet. We don't need a maid at present so can't sponsor her....originally we were going to hire her next year when her contract with the cleaning company was up as that timing suited us, but she ended up leaving early to work for this other family which we could understand her doing as she was on such a low salary and we weren't in the position to hire her until next year. The irony now is that she wishes she had just worked out her contract and waited!

Hi ladies.... She tried to find another employer but the family tricked her into believing again that they would sort out her visa....foolish on her part unfortunately. to cut a long story short, the family have left her in the lurch with no visa and are now refusing to help her, and she has two days to show her old company a new visa or ticket otherwise she may get deported or go to jail. Does anyone know if it is possible and legal for her to exit and re-enter on a visit visa through Kish or somewhere similar to buy her more time to find a new job? Thanks!
