Wait they haven't got the land yet? And it's about to get hot... How are they going to build something big enough for 670 pupils (and pass civil defence etc) by September?!?!

What about a nice box from the souq? There are a few places near the pashmina section that have really nice boxes... Or Ted Baker at the Gate might be a long shot...

Yes it is close but they are digging up the road between the Pearl and West Bay - construction will be ongoing for a number of years to build the Lusail Expressway. The best thing to do would be to come over again for another look - while I wouldn't be happy to sit in that traffic with 3 kids, you might be...

Al Jazi Gardens and Al Messilah come to mind - two of the oldest compounds but well maintained with lots of kids around, and in that price range. Think they both have waiting lists at the moment. There are quite a lot of families on the Pearl now and several playgrounds, but I wouldn't want to do that school run with the roadworks...

Morston Hall in Norfolk. It's owned by celebrity chef Galton Blackiston, the rooms are gorgeous and the food is Michelin starred!

Probably mostly from Dubai people! I don't have kids there but friends that do are very happy with the school. The best area to live in would be Ain Khaled or Abu Hamour to avoid crossing Salwa Road.

What about a bumbo chair (or similar) with a tray. Then you could put books/toys on the tray to for her to look at. Also at that age doing more tummy time will help strengthen her back & neck

Will your insurance cover maternity? If so, most expats go to Al Ahli or Doha Clinic. There are quite a lot of threads on this is you do a search. If no insurance, Hamad (govt hospital) is supposed to be quite good, although men are not allowed. Paediatrician depends on where you live. Many people like Future Medical near villagio. I take my baby to Al Ahli as it's closer for us and covered on our insurance. Al Esraa is also supposed to have good paediatricians. Again, there is loads of info if you search. Some newer compounds within that budget include Y village and Al Jazi Village 2. What area are you looking at? Sorry can't help with schools. Good luck with your move!

Mrs Abdalla in an ideal world you would have a birth plan that you would discuss with your OBGYN prior to the big day... However be aware that not everything goes to plan when you're in there!! I had an epidural here in Doha for a c-sec, couldn't feel my legs for a few hours afterwards, and had intermittent back pain for a few weeks afterwards. The worst part was trying to keep still with a major needle phobia.

Doha is a lot more conservative - I would say no holding hands or pecks on cheeks at any time in Qatar, and most people cover up in malls here anyway. Anyway as Louise mentioned, you cannot eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public for the whole month. (Pregnant women and children have an exception but you still do not see it). Many shops are closed during the day but are open late at night. The traffic is relatively quiet, so it's a good time to get used to driving, however you want to avoid being on the roads around sunset as everyone races home for iftar (breaking of the fast).

Try and buy local products where you can - eg a cucumber from Spain costs qr 40/kg but one grown in Saudi is qr 7/kg. Also double check the prices of products you automatically reach for - DH bought some Birds Eye peas at Megamart, not realising they were QR 40!!! You can get Watties frozen peas (from NZ) or local ones for around QR 12!

There are quite often expat-owned cars advertised on the FB group Buy It Sell It Swap It Qatar. Also, in my experience, many cars advertised on QL are not actually in the country, so please be careful.

You should check if your husband's company get corporate rates anywhere. How long are you staying for? An apartment at the new Marriott might be a better option with kids... (SIL managed to get an amazing rate on a suite at the Hilton last year, slept 4 comfortably and I reckon you could get 5 in...)

Personally I would research the same way as here - find suitable schools first, then look at the commuting distance. I have friends with primary school aged children in Cobham, and they love it.

If your company is paying for shipping, bring everything you can possibly think of. Furniture choices here are limited and expensive, and who knows when Ikea will open... Other things I suggest bringing are birthday cards, craft supplies if you're into that kind of thing, and natural food colouring for birthday cakes/baking.

Generally speaking you pay QR1,000/pcm more for furnished accommodation, ie the same villa might be 12k s/f and 13k f/f. Some compounds only provide semi furnished (includes white goods) while others provide only fully furnished and can be reluctant to remove furniture! Just be aware that there is not a huge range of choice of furniture here, and what is available may not be to your taste or budget (see all the Ikea threads...)
