To be fair, they actually said arrive between 12-2pm because the roads would be closed from 2pm. The actual start was advertised to be 2:30pm. Edited to add, that I can't actually find where I read that it started at 2:30pm...so no wonder it wasn't well known! But my son went and said it was very boring, they only saw the car go past once at 2:40pm (he could have got the time wrong though). They waited another 20-30 minutes and there was no more action so they left. :( edited by Tania on 22/01/2012

Someone I know mentioned to me a while back about the new hospital that the Sheikha is building in education city. Apparently, they said that a lot of the existing nurses wont be qualified enough to work in the new hospital....maybe there will be some jobs there for expats when it opens? I found this link http://www.hziegler.com/employers/sidra-medical-and-research-center.html

The only problem I've had with a non-UK credit card not being accepted is Karen Millen, which is really annoying since their stuff is marked up over 60% in the shops here :(

That's what I thought as well, but the immigration guys at dh's work said that it is legal for a Qatari (only) to sponsor a maid and let her work (and live in ) for someone else .. they just have to provide a letter saying that they are letting the maid work for someone else(which has to be renewed every 6 months).

My six year old son thinks that 99% of the drivers on the road are w*nkers....wonder where he got that from! :) I do always say that when I leave this country I'm going to buy a cr*ppy old car for the last day and just ram into anyone who beeps me unnecessarily, cuts me off etc etc. Then I'm going to drive straight to the airport with my hand out the window giving them all a friendly one fingered parting gesture! :) Hahaha sounds like a good plan GinaM :) Unfotunately my children have the same idea...with a few other expletives as well. But I have to admit, I don't mind driving... it's a bit like an adrenalin sport.

I used to use them but mine are all out of nappies now. Basically, I was never able to find any decent nappies here so I used to buy on the internet and ship them. I liked the pocket cloth nappies though. It has been over 2 years since I looked at the baby shops, but I'd be surprised if there was much of a choice.

Shaniqua, this is a Qatar thread. Does anyone know any salon that uses hot wax for legs? I really hate the strip wax and so far have found no one here that uses anything else. Got a great waxing place back in Australia, but unfortunately its a bit long to wait in between waxes for that.:\:

I got locked out also. We arrived about 17:20 at the stadium, my dh and son joined the queues to get in but from the past matches I knew I had to find the ladies queue (which is never marked btw and you can't tell from looking at the queues because the men alway join them and then get told at the last minute that it's a ladies queue- but that's another issue!) So my dh and son and his friend were inside already by the time I got to the front of the queue and they shut the gates, no explanation, nothing. After about ten minutes people started getting really angry but they were just shouting and chanting, so out came the riot police. They entered one of the queue 'cages' and started hitting people to make them fall back. More and more people were joining the queue and some started to push, I was stuck at the front of the gate with nowhere to go. It was seriously scary and the security were laughing. Fortunately after waiting for about 30 minutes for some unknown reason they let a few us in, so I was lucky! When we got into the stadium (no one checked our tickets) their were people in our 4 seats, the volunteer told us to go and find other seats but I was pretty riled by now so we got our seats. It was disgraceful, they were lucky the fans were on the whole placid and the worst that they did was shout because there would have been a lot of serious injuries. Qatar should be ashamed.

Rachel it obviously depends on who you work for in government. My hubby works for the Diwan and because of the nature of his job he does not get any public holidays (including Eid) and is not compenstated in any way for that. Also, our best friends just left who also worked for the Diwan and they were not given any end of service gratuity whatsever and there was nothing they could do about it.

It does depend on where you work. Unfortunately, the labour laws don't apply to government employees.
