You are quite the map maven, GM! I have no idea... Is it the HQ of the evil scientist who caused the earth tremors? PS: If you zoom back out to a medium zoom, crop circles seem to appear in the surrounding sand... <em>edited by Tartiflette on 23/06/2012</em>

If you have the patience I can actually create a group of pins and posters can relocate one pin at a time to a relevant position. (One poster relocates one pin, saves the map.. next poster continues from the last map repeating the same action.) I'm game if others are... I want to see if an image appears when we connect the pins-- EW logo? Face of Elvis?

In any case, with your location added, the 3 pins run alongside the west side of SZR. Metro red line hitting the speed of sound?

I would have pinned my own pin on the map but didn't see a way to do it-- if there is such a function it would encourage people as it would be more anonymous... <em>edited by Tartiflette on 20/06/2012</em>

I looked on a real-time earthquake map and nothing around here except a 4.3 magnitude quake on 16 June, near Akbarabad, Iran... Very mysterious!

i took something from bloomingdale's and it was 175 dhs when i go to pay the lady told me 200 dhs and i say why on the price tag is 175 she said on the system is 200..always the same excuse. i always ask now for the price on the cash counter before.. That happened to me today at Bloomingdale's-- I insisted that they honour the price as marked on the tag, and they got a manager over and they did. So it may be worth arguing there, even if it doesn't work at other shops.

We had 3 sets of shakes! The first was just before 7:30-- we thought it was someone pounding on our floor-to-ceiling kitchen windows, which freaked us out! Then it happened again after a few minutes-- REALLY freaking us out-- then again after another 20! My husband was home by then, he dashed outside to chase what he thought were stray cats launching themselves at the windows (or fighting in front of the window?) but nothing to be seen... Very strange indeed! Would love to hear any explanations... Was just reading thread about fault lines so it did cross my mind. But it seemed to be just the windows rather than a general tremor (maybe they are the weakest link?). We are in Jumeirah 1, near the zoo.

I haven't flown with them but use Skytrax to check out airlines... They do have some reviews of Aerosvit (score 2/10 based on 112 reviews)-- you can read what passengers have to say... Often some routes score better than others depending on aircraft used and other factors. http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/aerosvit.htm

It's just opposite Jumeira Beach Park, in that mall that's mainly restaurants (Circle, Sapne, Starbucks, etc.). Edited to add: Mall is called Beach Park Plaza. <em>edited by Tartiflette on 13/06/2012</em>

Hi, that does sound very young... I am not an expert but I have had a 3.5-year-old, and I have been wearing lenses for 29 years, and I must say I think it would be very difficult. What has the doctor said about it? Have they had other patients that age wearing lenses? Would they be disposable or would you have a complex daily cleaning regimen? Have you had a second opinion? For any ophthalmological issues I would highly recommend Dr Millicent Grim at the Gulf Eye Center in the Fairmont Hotel office tower on SZR. She is extremely competent and well regarded.

Just to add to the chorus. Groupon did eventually "refund" the amount I paid for 2 massage vouchers at a spa that conveniently went out of business shortly after selling the deal, BUT only into a Groupon account. So now I am trying to see how I can spend the amount on things that won't be too disappointing/fraudulent/horrid. I used some of the credit to buy frozen yogurt vouchers (figuring, how wrong can you go with that?) but the yogurt was awful and we were showered with sparks from a faulty lightbulb. Can't wait to spend the credit and UNSUBSCRIBE forever. I bought the vouchers shortly after moving here and wish I had read the warnings... Newbies take note!

I was a regular at the Dubai Mall Dermalogica branch having used their products for years and years. However, since opening, they have had a massive turn over in staff. The last time i went i had someone who had done 3 weeks training and i knew more than she did. There is a thread on here somewhere with other peoples experiences too. I would love to go back there but word of warning...if you call to make an appointment, ask them how long the therapist has been there or has been trained because i wouldn't wish my last experience on anyone. Agree that Dubai Mall Dermalogica does not necessarily do a good Dermalogica facial... I tried it once (a few months ago) and was not very impressed with the experience.

DH has told me you are supposed to get 10minutes grace between parking and putting a ticket on. Obviously not in reality! this place can be the pits sometimes no i think you will find its at the end of the hour period, not before as how do they know how long your car has been there. It's definitely not at the end of the period-- a friend of mine recently got a ticket the moment her ticket expired, the guy was standing there waiting! She walked out as he was writing it, it was 1 minute past expiry. (If you pay by SMS, it reminds you well before so that you have time to renew.)

May be worth a visit to judge for yourself, but I was quite disappointed on my first visit (for lunch)-- pushy staff trying to up-sell (why are you having only this drink? why not try this drink? are you sure that's all you want to eat, you will be hungry, you should order more), mixed-quality food (nice Caesar salad but the accompanying chicken was unappetizingly pale and greasy), not very good value (dips served with very few accompanying bread items for dipping, additional bread to be charged). I recently gave them a second chance as I found the space attractive (despite lack of view) and the menu interesting, but found the staff still pushy although the food (I stayed vegetarian this time) was better. Let us know if you liked it and what day of teh week you went! Maybe I have just been unlucky?

Hi Cheeky, My in-laws say: "Any of the Rani Resorts are really stunning. Bazaruto Island is gorgeous. Google either of these, and I’m sure she’ll find something nice. When does she plan to go? Just FYI, Nov, Dec, Jan and Feb are unbelievably hot and can rain a lot!" Hope this helps! Tartiflette

Sorry to gate crash , has anyone had the family brunch there on a Friday? Is it nice for kids there to stay or is it more adult place Tia It's a great place for kids, the pool is fantastic and they have a little kids' club depending on the age of your kids. When we were there they had camel rides, badminton, horseshoes, kite flying, archery etc. for kids although it was Eid so they may not be usual activities on normal weekends. Generally a kid-friendly place though.

I stayed at home, mostly hanging out in the garden but there in case of any issues and just for general supervision (especially when putting furniture and rugs back into place). The took the full day at my place, it depends on how many units/vents you have. They are very thorough and it is a multi-stage process so it takes a while. HTH

Your DH is correct, that's how it works. It is generally the tenant who pays, not the landlord. I have heard that it can sometimes take a while for a new tenancy to get registered, so you may not see the charge on your first bill-- have you just moved? I think some free zones (like Silicon Oasis) may be exempt from this, so that could be a factor...

Any votes on who would have the best info for individual situations? Perhaps not airlines, as Melba points out (although they have experience dealing with the situation)... UAE consulate in country of traveller? DNRD in Dubai? Consulate of traveller's country, in UAE? Or just try it and spend 1 night in the airport hotel in worst-case scenario?

Gege, was that person flying Emirates? I wonder if the rules are the same no matter what airline is used... I have a family member on Canadian passport arriving in Dubai for 3 days (I will apply for tourist visa), then out for 10 days and back for around 30 hours. He will be leaving and re-entering Dubai with EK but his onward trip out of DXB is not with EK. Travel agent advised that he would be eligible for a transit visa on the way home but now I am not so sure! If 30-day rule applies he will be stuck in the airport! Does anyone have a solid Immigration contact? Apparently the answers to these questions vary depending on who answers the phone, which is only helpful if that person hs the same info as the person who is on duty when you turn up at the airport!

I can highly recommend Dr Millicent Grim at the Gulf Eye Centre (in the Fairmont Hotel office tower on SZR), she is an ophthalmologist. When you book an appointment you will first be seen by an optometrist, Dr Samson, and then by Dr Grim to look at general eye health and confirm the optometrist's findings. We just took our 6-year-old and were very happy with them. Hope this helps.

I read the original article yesterday and I can't help but think the whole thing is some sort of wind up or social experiment. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder and maybe she looks better in the flesh, but to me she cannot be described as beautiful, fairly attractive at best (unless she is just not photogenic). I hope it [u'>is[/u'> a wind-up-- otherwise the DM have really lost it (beyond their usual horrifying standards)! She appears slim and well manicured but above the neck... ugh! (Not that I am a supermodel- but I am not writing articles about my supreme beauty.)

I have seen him for foot and knee issues. He was recommended to me (by my GP and others) as being very good and not jumping in to do unnecessary surgery. I have heard several people refer to him as "the best in Dubai" (including someone working in a health insurance company). I do not have experience with others so cannot say if he is the best, but I have been very satisfied with him and the team of physiotherapists at Orthosports.

Well I'd like to see the Kaiser Chiefs but...... there is no mention on their website of a tour date here and last time *they* were here it was just a DJ set, so very loathe to splash the cash until I know for sure. FYI I wrote to the organisers and they wrote back to confirm that the Kaiser Chiefs will actually be performing... I am going but a bit nervous after reports about last time! I heard that they are selling fewer tickets so hopefully the predicted riot will not happen.
