The law firm that handles visa's for Dh's company advised us that flying out of the country (I did the Oman Air visa flight) is the only "safe" way to do it. Apparently you may be able to do it at Hatta, but they may also refuse. Flying out and back is 100% guaranteed.

To echo Moustique: Jumeirah is an older area, so it's true that the villas are not always as "fresh" as in newer areas (although often they are more solidly built)... Do keep in mind, though, that landlords are often willing to change certain things that are in poor condition, so it's worth asking for changes if specific things are bothering you (examples from our villa: changing oven, changing dishwasher, painting, repairing window screens, changing shower stall, re-doing tile grout). Bon courage et bienvenue à Dubaï!

I've also recently gotten a few pants and dresses tailored from a favorite which has worked out well. Any tailor details, Granola? I've been meaning to try copying some items before they fall apart from overuse...

Hi- Sorry to hear about your issues! You could try EPSCO: http://www.epsco-intl.com, I think they do indoor air quality evaluation (and cleanup). I haven't used them but got quotes from them and SaniService to do A/C cleaning (EPSCO also do water tank cleaning), Were you satisfied with SaniService? I would appreciate your feedback as I was about to book them to do the A/C before we need to turn it on again...

To get the rainy feeling (and a bit of a massage) We could go the car-wash at the nearest garage* Walking on through in our wellies and macs Getting soaked and then scrubbed on our bellies and backs You have to admit, it would be a laugh Especially the looks on the faces of the staff [i'>*please pronounce to rhyme with "massage"[/i'>

About the colour scheme thing: If you are furnishing a room from scratch, why NOT have a colour scheme? If you are having to get everything new then why not have it match? It's not like it has to cost any more. I furnished (sparsely of course due to size) our maid's room with some secondhand and some new bits, but the bedding, chair and curtains match and it looks quite nice! She has seen other rooms in the neighbourhood and came back exceedingly grateful for her own. She works very hard and is grateful for both the job and for the way we treat her (decently). edited by Tartiflette on 08/03/2012

I think you are thinking of the place I mentioned earlier, the Al Manara office (it is on the UmmSuqeim side of SZR, you can get to it from Al Wasl Rd without going onto SZR). It has a typing office.

I have never been to a coffee morning, but I think if I ever did, I would try to start up conversations with people rather than expecting them to talk to me. It could be that most of the women there are also newbies! After all, I can't imagine that an expat who has lived here for a few years would be going to coffee mornings to make friends. Just to add that at my one coffee morning experience (as a newbie), the others were definitely [b'>not [/b'> newbies. I arrived early on and people were already settled at (full) tables catching up, no space for others. I sat alone until a couple of late stragglers arrived... I met the people at my table only. I did introduce myself at some of the other tables when people started to leave and some spaces freed up, but no one was particularly interested. I have heard that the general atmosphere depends on the location...

Touching fruit isn't a problem as it can be washed..I think people are referring to the poking and prodding! ... or the sniffing, licking, taking a bite...! Oh I sniff tomatoes! Don't buy ones that don't have a smell ...but my nose doesn't touch them! :\: That's OK, I do sniff some things as well... But not by pressing them against my nostrils as I have seen in some places...!

Plus he can't increase the rent in the first 2 years either. Just to let everyone know that I called RERA to ask about this (having similar LL issues to other posters) and this used to be the case, but the law has changed and so the landlord CAN raise the rent after the first year (if he is entitled to an increase).

Wow-- which supermarket is this? I think that people get a bit too upset over grape-samplers but opening packets is really out of line! I tend to witness "improper sampling behaviour" at buffets, e.g. (1) picking up and squeezing every bread roll before selecting one, (2) picking up a crêpe, sniffing it, taking a bite, not liking it and flinging it back in the chafing dish, (3) tasting a salad-bar item directly from the serving spoon and putting the spoon back into the serving bowl... Nice!

I have also been looking for a bank for my maid... I have read previous threads and it seems like the only hope was NBAD... But their website says that: [b'> "With effect from November 1, 2011 the minimum monthly balance requirement for individual account will be AED 3,000 for residents."[/b'> There doesn't seem to be minimum salary level so if your maid has that much saved it could be an option...

Is it time to let up, or for others to start teaching? Don't let up! The fact that some others are raising rude brats is no reason to let your own family's standards go. Children and teens who know how to behave politely will get further in their careers and adult social lives-- "letting up" now will not do them any favours. (My opinion, anyway...)

Do babies get carsick? It may be "testing" or disliking being restrained as suggested by others, but I do think that babies [u'>can[/u'> get carsick-- my daughter (now 6.5 yrs and still prone to carsickness) screamed/cried the whole way up the mountain on our first vacation (age 2 months), and on other journeys not in straight lines. I think that this was due to carsickness especially as car seats at that age are rear facing. It continued to be an issue on certain types of roads and improved greatly once the car seat was swapped to be front-facing. Even now she can't sit in a rear-facing seat on a train! We did speak to her paediatrician but unfortunately there's not much to be done... I find that sucking on something helps (even now we give her sugar-free hard sweets on at-risk journeys). Good luck!

Hi, I have used Marhaba (diamond service- where they meet guests at the plane) 4 times in the past 8 months for various visitors (up to age 80), most recently on 26 December. Never had a problem, they have always been there and whisked guests quickly through to the arrivals hall. When I requested it (i.e. for my 80-year-old visitor), they provided the electric buggy service. Hope this helps!

Hi-- Sorry to hijack a bit but our Ethiopian maid (who speaks good English) arrived last month and would love to meet some friends, if your maid or your friends' maids ever get together... Also I'm sure she'd be happy to help if you needed her to explain or translate something for you. She also has friends back home who would love an opportunity to work in Dubai, if anyone is still looking... thanks mushypeas, is there a trick to getting google translate to do Amharic? It doesnt show in my list so I thought they didnt do it? Ive been looking all over for translators as I dont want to bother my friends (who have Ethiopian maids that have been here a while and speak english, lol) all the time.

Hi, I can recommend Tchibo for clothing: they have good quality, cotton clothing at very low prices (including great value bras & panties, swimsuits, shoes...). Generally better quality than Carrefour, IMO. We buy basic toiletries as well (the necessities) but things like makeup would be her own responsibility. Where do you live? We are in Jumeira 1 and our Ethiopian maid would love to meet some friends in the area (she speaks good English and is open to all nationalities, but the other nationalities don't seem interested!). She might be able to help them with English, as well.

I have had the Mirena for 4 years, no problems. Same for a friend of mine, she is on her 2nd or 3rd. Still, good to tak to a doc and do some reading as I believe some people do have issues with it... My Ob just recently suggested the marina coil. I would be interested to hear of positive and negative experiences on this one. For most people it is great but I had a bad experience in it - really stuffed up my hormones. Do a search on it and see what other people have said. There have been a few posts about it. It is called the Mirena coil.

Dr Carol Lecart (Dermatologist) at the Belgium Medical Center in Healthcare City can do a DermoJet injection (it is a needle-less injection) for plantar warts (soles of the feet)-- very swift and effective. She would be able to advise on the warts in other locations too... She was recommended to me by a GP, a podiatrist and a couple of friends, and I have taken my daughter to see her. She is good with kids and even has a TV to distract them while she does what she has to do (although the DermoJet takes only a second!). Good luck!

Do you think that Jumeirah compounds would compare with Arabian Ranches for community etc as we have 3 children Thanks Hmm... I think you would need one of the larger compounds, and one designed around a central communal area (like Al Manara Villas or API Villas near the zoo)... Maybe Splendour Villas... Sheikh Ahmed Villas is a large compound but i didn't think it had such a community feel. There must be others as well. But I don't think any of them would have that "total-suburbia" vibe that AR has. (But of course you have proximity to other parts of Dubai, to the beach, to the malls and cafes and restaurants along Beach Road...)

I buy it much less frequently than I did before moving here... and only at the organic shop in Dubai Mall. I'm not sure it hasn't been frozen, so only buy what I need, not to "stock up". It seems that a lot of other brands inject or soak theirs in something to bulk it up... And as I have a young daughter I worry about hormones in all of them. Good tip about Carrefour though, will check out their offerings. Thanks Shaks!

Hi, We have been in Jumeirah 1 since May and love the area! We are in a house that feels independent (own gate and entrance onto street) with our own small garden, but share a large garden and pool with 3 other villas. Good balance between privacy and convenience. we only looked at 4 bedrooms but price range was around 200-260k so a 3-bed should be well below. Good luck!
