Hi again- our messages crossed paths! Lausanne is in the canton of Vaud so they may have different rules; best to check with your OH's company. Annecy or Evian would not be convenient places to live. If you aren't restricted to the canton of Vaud, you may want to consider living in/near Geneva, which is larger with more expats, and have OH commute (trains to/from Lausanne are frequent, and airport trips will be much shorter). Hope this helps!

Bonjour! As Simple correctly recalled, I have been in Geneva and just got back yesterday. Currently on my phone so will keep it short, but for now: 1. With an EU passport you can live in France and work in Geneva; if you don't, you must live in the canton of Geneva. 2. Evian and Annecy are not painless commutes; Annecy easier due to new highway but not a short hop. 3. You can manage without French on arrival, but much more so in Geneva itself than in France. 4. My restored farmhouse with new in-ground pool and jacuzzi with panoramic view of the Alps is for rent... It's on the French side, just 10 km from the border. I can send you some photos if interested... All the best Tartiflette

First the Bad NANDOS That Nando's is TOXIC! We were staying next door and got a takeaway (after previous good experiences in London and SA) and were sorely disappointed... Some of the sides were OK but the chicken went into the bin.

Hi, I just did the Oman trip (with Oman Air from Dubai)... Since your departure and return flights are on the same day, you should be able to get your return boarding pass at the same time as your departure one, so when you get to Muscat you can just go straight to the departure area without going through any additional checking in. HOWEVER the deplaning/boarding are done with buses, and the flights board quite early, so an hour may be too tight-- even a slight delay outbound could make you miss your flight back. Upon Oman Air's advice, I booked the flights with just over 3 hours in between (they suggested leaving 2 hours or more, and that's what was available). The airport isn't fantastic but there is a Costa Coffee with comfy armchairs-- bring a book! Hope this helps.

Hi, Botswana is great but I agree with other posters that it may not be ideal for a toddler. I wouldn't suggest the Okavango (I would be nervous of the water, and a restless toddler in a dugout canoe surrounded by wildlife) and while Chobe could work she might not enjoy long game drives, and would not have the stamina for game walks (and would get heavy to carry)... You may end up doing 1 game drive with her and then taking turns going on your own while 1 parent stays back at the lodge. (Based on my own experience.) You also need to consider malaria risk and prevention. The World Health Organization's travellers' health site would have detailed info but if you are travelling in a "malarious" area you would have to think about whether you are prepared to give your daughter the required prophylactic meds (e.g. Malarone Junior-- our daughter has had it quite a few times with no ill effects at all). Adults (esp. those living in Africa, including myself previously) can be cavalier about prophylaxis but malaria is under-5s is not to be taken lightly! HTH

Sorry Evenstar, Just saw your message! I didn't use the club today, I just showed up and they let me in to wander around the various areas (if you want a formal tour you can ring in advance and they will arrange someone to show you around). I was very impressed! The info sheets I have don't mention the daily rate. Doing some budgeting but am hoping to join-- the 3 free months is a good incentive and you can freeze your membership for up to a month out of every year (e.g. if you travel in the summer) which is handy for me. Hope this helps-- maybe we can have a coffee as members!

In most western countries, a trade license costs less than $300. ... and in many you can pay 30%, 40%, 50% or more in taxes and various levies... I still don't think $2000 equivalent is necessarily prohibitive-- obviously it depends on your projected income levels. edited by Tartiflette on 02/05/2011

I can access the site with no problems, it's all up-to-date with no construction... Maybe some browsers are retrieving cached copies?? Planning to visit tomorrow... See you there maybe Evenstar

I am new here but I believe that individuals can get a freelancer's license (not a trade license) for AED7,500 although I'm not sure whether it is valid for every profession. That wouldn't be too prohibitive to someone with a steady stream of clients. From Knowledge Village website: "The Freelance Permit identifies you as a sole practitioner and enables you to conduct your business in your birth name as opposed to a brand name. Costs: Freelance Permit Dhs 7,500/- annually"

Hi G, If your daughter is so anxious you could ask the dentist about the possibility of using nitrous oxide ("laughing gas"), my daughter had it once (age 3) for some blood tests to relax her (previous blood tests had been traumatic) and it worked like a charm. It wears off quickly after they stop inhaling it-- nowhere near as drastic as general anaesthesia! Good luck!

Hi Swils- My DH is in a very similar position (dad far away and diagnosed with cancer in December)... We have been once for a visit and since then his dad's condition has deteriorated and he is contemplating when to go next... (Unlikely that we will all go as a family). All I can say is: 1) I think you will feel better when you have gone, it will mean a lot to him and you will also feel like you have been proactive and "done something" rather than staying in touch from afar: 2) Your true friends (not the casual acquaintances) shouldn't mind hearing the details, don't be afraid to talk about it if you need to, that's what they are there for and I'm sure you would listen if they were in a similar situation. 3) Your DH will do fine and will appreciate you even more when you get back! Best of luck Tarti

Tartiflette- see you are starting at DESS what year?? I've got 3 of them covered if you wanna 'bump' into someone. It's a lovely school and you will make frinds there but it's also nice if you can get some introductions. Hi! My daughter is in Year 1, she'll be joining the green class. Any of yours in there? It would be great to meet you but also great for her if she can know of another kid in her class or year... Someone who could say "hi" (if bribed beforehand with Easter eggs) and/or include her at break time...

Hi Sugar, The Four Points is fine, big flat (very skimpy kitchen equipment though) and decent furnishings although the bathrooms are pretty dated. The staff are a bit confused as to our cleaning entitlements so hoping to sort that out tomorrow (twice-weekly full cleaning has become thrice, but daily rubbish removal seems to have been forgotten altogther)... Not much for kids, just the pool upstairs but school starting anyway and hoping to move mid-month if we find a house. LO starting at DESS, have been rushing around to get uniforms and the special red shoes. Need to start ironing the name labels on.. Yeccch. :(

I wonder which is worse? At least I am not an ankle-biting L of the N. We were able to apply to DESS, JESS and Repton (all UK curriculum) without a visa... One of them has a mixed REPutation and has been having some issues so you will need to decide if it's worth applying...

I’m guessing I have to wait for her visa to be sorted (which I hear is a pretty quick process) before I begin on getting her on waiting lists? Hi Yorkie (I am getting shortened to Tarti so dishing out the same treatment!) I cannot advise on most of your post BUT I do know from recent experience that you [u'>can[/u'> apply without having the visa. We applied from outside the UAE with just passport, birth certificate, etc.-- the schools ask that you send them a copy of the entry stamp ASAP and then the residence visa once it has been processed (as it is required for registration with the authorities-- but that is after the child has been admitted!). Good luck, I'm sure we'll get more insights from the EW crowd at the Lancashire HotTatiePot Yorkiflette Orienteering Night!

I agree with other posters that if you are "indifferent" you shouldn't have them-- your family may be "selling" parenthood positively but becoming a parent is a huge change in your life and I think you need to really want it, not just give it a try-- after all, once you have a child there is no turning back!

Can you really get Tête de Moine in Dubai? Great!!! (For non-initiates, this a delicious cheese made by Swiss monks.) I was recently in a shop (in Switzerland) and they had a big bearded guy in his fifties dressed as a monk giving free samples, promoting the cheese, etc. I asked him if he was really a monk and he winked and said "Only during business hours, honey"!

It will also be an experience for me as I will get to hear your accent! (As described on other post. ;)) Aroha: Aha so you were probably thinking of "my" Alps when you recognized the dish! We can also look up something from the Pyrénées, for balance. They do a lot of ewe's-milk cheeses I think.

Hiya Sugar-- good thinking! Yes that's exactly where we're staying. My daughter will be at DESS so not sure where we will end up (my original idea was to live within walking distance of the school but that is less practical for DESS than for some other schools!). Based on previous advice from EW threads I plan to check out Jumeirah/Umm Suqeim compounds, Meadows/Lakes, the Villa, perhaps Business Bay and Cedre Villas at DSO... Apparently there are also a lot of DESS kids at the Ranches so who knows...?! Suggestions/leads welcome. I am hoping to do a "drive thru" to get the feel of various areas and then choose 1-2 to focus our search. Hoping to be out of the Fourpoints within 30 days (any tips about staying there by the way?). Tart(iflette)

Hi- Just to point out that the WHO document referenced by Frannie does say: "Alternatively, you can prepare feeds using fresh, safe water at room temperature and consume immediately. Feeds prepared with water cooler than 70ºC should not be stored for use later." So if she is out she can indeed make up formula "on the go" (with powder and safe water) as long as it is for immediate consumption. I got my DD used to sometimes having room temperature formula in case I was ever in a place without access to warming equipment.

Hi Tiger, All Nespresso machines meet certain requirements (mainly the pressure) and so the coffee should be equally good in all. I agree with other posters that you should have an automatic rather than a manual-- so you press the button for short or long, and don't have to stand there watching your cup fill (or overflow, if the phone rings!). Otherwise it's all about the style and colour (and whether or not to have the milk frother)... If you want froth capability I would recommend getting the frother separately, unless you have the counter space for Citiz&Milk. The ones with built-in frothers are more likely to have "technical issues" (this from a contact at Nespresso). (Or as posted the microwave is fine-- but if you have kids they love having frothy milk!) Between the Essenza and the Citiz, either is fine, I have had both and have never had a problem-- and coffee tastes the same.
