I have friends with a son at Wellington, they are very happy with the school. I also know 2 Charterhouse alumni who rave about the school and have enrolled their children for when they are slightly older.

Hi redleaf, My daughter stopped napping at 18 months, but then again she did get a long night's sleep (12-14 hours). How long is your son sleeping at night? Does he wake naturally in the morning or do you wake him? Perhaps if he sleeps later he will be able to skip the nap without grumpiness. Friends of mine in similar situations have used a mandatory "quiet time" ("you don't have to sleep but you have to lie down with a book or cuddly toy for a little while after lunch")... during which the child may or may not nod off. Soft music and parental cuddle could be added as well. I think sometimes they don't want to miss what is going on in the daytime while they nap (that was definitely the case with mine)-- the quiet time can show them that nothing is going on anyway, so it's OK to have a sleep. Could be a good test to see if he still needs the nap. Good luck!

The immigration lawyers helping with our residence visas told me that there is a special OmanAir visa flight that leaves DXB, zips over to Muscat and comes back in the same day, it is specifically for people needing visa runs. I won't be doing it until May so can't give any details though!

And a touch of lemon juice, non? Thing is, it feels so wrong in the Dubai desert, it only works at the top of a snowy mountain for me! And if you cranked up the A/C and scattered soap flakes all over the place? (Although judging from your other thread you need to find a cleaning service first ;))

Fondue : use 1/3 of Beaufort, 1/3 of Comte, 1/3 of Gruyere or Emmental ... or the Swiss way- "moitié-moitié" (half-and-half) Gruyère and Vacherin! (and a little cornstarch to thicken... maybe a shot of kirsch if you have a license... ) ;)

Silly question, but do you guys who stay just muddle through with young children and do your best to entertain them without any other little friends around, or do you look for advertised events? Hi- I am about to move to Dubai and started a thread on the subject: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=140118 There are playgroups/events I believe, but in August (which is Ramadan this year) it seems best to have some friends lined up in order to have at-home playdates and not have to worry about eating/drinking in public (also keeps costs down vs paying for indoor play areas). I do get the impression that there will be a fair number of "little friends" around-- I will be there for part of the summer and am counting on EW to help me find them! edited by Tartiflette on 26/03/2011

Hi Nicky and A_lisha, We will also be moving in April (arriving on the 19th) with our nearly 6-yr-old daughter and I have also read the scary threads-- but also some in which people "defend" Dubai and point out the positives. I think we will have to look at it as an adventure and stay optimistic! I would be happy to meet and/or chat beforehand. getting ready for the beach

I think the decision might be easier than you think right now! Honestly once you start looking you will be able to discount lots of compounds/areas/styles of villas - then you can concentrate on the areas/places you like! I hope so! That's why the visit would be good- then on arrival we can do a more focused search... SO hard to tell from websites (especially when so many ads don't have photos). If you need a visit visa most hotels can arrange them within 24 hours!! Yes but I have read that "evil Canadians" now need to wait 30 days between visas to re-enter the country and we will need to arrive before those 30 days are up... Waiting for advice from visa handlers at DH's company... Thanks for your advice- I really appreciate it! ;)

I think it is possible, but rare. Symptoms related to sugar/sweet-thing consumption could be triggered by other things (e.g. candida, alergy to corn syrup...). Only testing can tell...

Thanks, all-- I did come across the Cedre Villas last night while staying up late property-searching (I can't sleep, I feel I have to be proactive since the move is imminent and we are under-prepared)... They look nice and modern but from previous threads on here it seems that there are (or have been) some issues with water/electricity, lack of communal facilities... Grateful for any info on whether these have been resolved and how people are enjoying the area now... (I see a new Spinneys has opened). JHM: I hadn't heard of Al Bada'a but on the map it looks very convenient! Is it mainly individual homes or are there compounds? As we have only 1 child we are looking for a compound (or at least a street with a lot of friendly neighbours). Despite all of your excellent advice it is going to be really hard to make the decision on where to live! There are so many pros and cons to each area... Aargh! If I can sort out my visa issues I will hop on a plane ASAP to get started...

Hi, I feel for you! One school asked for reports as well as samples (provided by DD's current school) of unaided math and writing work, and based on those did not require assessment. Another school does require an assessment but agreed to have it administered at DD's current school. The third has us so far down on the waiting list that they have the reports requested at the time of application, but didn't ask for anything else. That said, DD is only 5 (in Year 1) so that may be why they are more relaxed. I guess it might be possible (as Shamat said) to take the place but not move, but then again if moving early gets you into a better school and avoids splitting the family, why not take the plunge? Then you'll be settled before the big heat hits and not trying to unpack, find a house etc, in August during Ramadan... Tartiflette

Hi! We were exactly the same situation and also planned to move in Sept. but it became clear that it would be very hard to get into schools... Then we were made aware (by the EW crowd and others) that due to Dubai regulations, children already at school in Dubai cannot change schools so late in the year, and neither can those coming from outside Dubai from a different curriculum to the school they want to enter. SO... If any places become available for next term (starting end-April), they can only be allocated to a child coming from outside Dubai who is already doing the same curriculum (UK, American, International...). If you are willing to move in April, contact your target schools (if they are same-curriculum) and let them know. That is how we got our last-minute place. Good luck! Tartiflette

If you don't have a problem with DD sometimes drinking from a bottle, you could occasionally express milk and have DH feed her? This can foster closeness and make him feel more involved (if he is that kind of guy) and free up some time for you... Also handy in the future if you want to get out and about!

It's a man thing... I have read that men can react this way when they feel "left out" on some level because of the strong bond between the mother and child that they can't share in the same way, plus they suffer from the reduced attention from their wives compared to before but don't want to seem selfish clamouring for their wives' attention so they just kind of detach. I also get random things in my search box, for sites I have never been to. I agree with many of the others that the best solution for now is not to assume that he is cheating, but to try to spend relaxing time together (NOT talking about your child all the time), trying to recapture the pre-baby closeness/dynamic you used to have. He probably just needs a bit of babying himself!

Thanks everyone! I hope I find everyone in Dubai to be as helpful as you... (I know-- not a chance!! I have read enough threads!) We will keep an open mind re: areas. Not sure we'll make it for a pre-visit but we have 30 days' accommodation provided on arrival so hopefully that will be enough time to find a house. There seem to be a lot of properties available but if anyone knows of a great house (good condition, decent landlord, no sewage problems...) about to come on the market (3-4 bedrooms) you could let me know on tartiflette at me dot com. See you soon (even though we might not recognise each other!) T

Congratulations on Little Stovetop! I also had similar issues and found that the nipple shields worked great. I was told many times that if the baby was properly latched, it shouldn't hurt, but it always did and the nipple shields got me through. Also remember to use a nipple cream (such as Lansinoh) to soothe and protect. edited by Tartiflette on 17/03/2011

You're kidding! That's 2 minutes from my DD's school in Lancy! I know at least 2 expat families who might be interested. I could put them in touch with you-- I haven't figured out how to send a private message on here (e.g. to share contact info)-- not sure of the rules on that. School=DESS. I think that is a good result as we really wanted a non-profit school-- hoping to come out next week for a quick visit to at least get started on house search... Although it appears that it won't be a pleasant commute no matter where we live! :( 170ish sq metres, 1st floor, 3 beds, no garden, large terrace, in Plan-les-Ouates (5 mins from France, 10 mins from airport) nobody ex-pat wants to live there as too far from centre, we daren't risk renting it to locals as they would be allowed to stay for ever and we will be back in 2.5 yrs. On the invite it says ''We will have a buffet and soft drinks will be provided, when you are here a contribution towards this will be appreciated!'' Is it possible that she means a contribution to the buffet, i.e. a dish to add, rather than a financial contribution? That would seem less weird to me. Then again, a friend of mine was invited to a wedding in another country and shelled out for a plane ticket, an outfit, a hotel room and of course a present, only to be asked for cash as she entered the reception-- to pay for her meal!! So you never know :\:

i think the world is hygiene obsessive. LOL to a point. That's what your immune system is for. However, it's no excuse for people not even doing the basics. That's why I pretty much refuse to shake hands of people here - it's vile. [b'>And if I see people in the bathroom going to leave without washing I normally do say something.[/b'> And if I left the bathroom without washing my hands and you made a comment I would tell you to mind your own *#@& business! I was once in Liverpool Street Station in London, where a radio station was broadcasting live and had set up cameras in the sink area of the men's and women's toilets. If they spotted someone leaving without washing their hands, they would announce it over the PA system, e.g. "EXCUSE ME, THE LADY IN THE RED COAT AND BLACK BERET WHO JUST LEFT THE TOILETS!" (woman looks around, to see who is watching her/calling her) "YES, YOU, NEXT TO THE NEWSAGENT'S" (now all the people around her are looking at her) YOU LEFT WITHOUT WASHING YOUR HANDS, DIDN'T YOUR MOTHER TEACH YOU ANYTHING?" Maybe a similar system for the malls? ;)

Many thanks to everyone for your advice and for sharing your experiences. I am now totally sold on arriving in April, settling in, making friends to hang out with in the summer, and travelling a bit to break up the long hot stretch and avoid Ramadan (but not all of it, in order to get some cultural benefit and do some Iftar-ing). Now I just need to get a school for Tartiflette Junior! I have been in touch with some and it looks like we may have a chance for April (indeed a much better chance than for Sept.)... Special thanks to Cornish Pixie, Clairehdp and Nobbles for their input on the school issue and to Singapore Sling for the book recommendation. Bunny I haven't tried the oven trick yet! Tartiflette  PS- As a Canadian I found it funny that people compared UK cold with Dubai heat when talking about extremes! When I lived in the UK (OK the southern part but still) I found it positively balmy...

We oven-roast vegetables (sweet potato, aubergine, capsicum/peppers, onions, garlic cloves-- whatever you like really) lightly tossed in olive oil, then, once they are cooked, put strips of halloumi over the top, put under the grill, scatter with chopped mint leaves and serve with crusty bread as a vegetarian meal.
