Sorry to hear about your experience Jupiter, hope you are ok. Have you tried going in to the RTA/Al Barsha, and speaking to someone? You'll probably have to go to various people before finding the right person but that's probably the best place to start?

20 old arabic doors in satwa/badia/jafaliya 20 different spices in the spice souk 20 people doing something you don't see every day (a man pushing a cart beside the creek, a man unloading things from a dhow by hand etc) 20 different views of Burj Khalifa (from 20 different spots around the city) What an awesome project!

. As much as I respect people and their faith, regardless of whether I agree with it or not, and I will listen if someone wants to tell me about it (as I am happy to talk about my faith if someone asks) I will not participate in something that my faith forbids. Whether it's a religious holiday or anything else. I can show respect in many other ways. I'm glad then that we live in a tolerant country, where Local people say Merry Christmas to you at the petrol station on Christmas Day :) and that we have a government who respects that there are different religions and helps us to celebrate them. It would be much harder for a lot of us to live somewhere like KSA where everything would have to go on behind closed doors. Cherpie - your DH seems to have changed materially since last year then? Has something happened or do you think he has some sort of depression?

But isn't this all part of the great thing about living here? Being able to say "I don't practise your religion. I don't even fully understand it, or what you are celebrating. But I'm going to learn a little bit about it, let our children tell us what they have learned at school about it, eat a little bit of the food eaten at this time, get involved in what's going on around town and be generally open, understanding and respectful towards what you believe". A visitor we had last week was most impressed when he learned that the land for St Mary's church and the Hindu temple in Bur Dubai had been donated by the Government.

What is it she needs to sign & why? It could surely be done here, attested at court and stamped by the embassy of her home country. As an aside, I'd be particularly careful and on the look out for suspicious behaviour if i were you!

A lot of the time the barrier to companies hiring part time workers is that the workers don't want to have to stick to the other requirements of the company, i.e. only 25 days holiday per year etc. let's face it, it's mostly Mums who want part time hours to fit round school hours, but the problem then is that they also want to be away all Summer, and other holidays. So unless the company is happy with that (and mostly they wouldn't be, unless it's an educational establishment) this then means they may as well hire a full time worker.

Will he let you take them away, Cherpie? The last thing you want is him using this against you later down the line & possibly painting it as something else (ie attempted kidnapping etc). If you do decide to have Christmas here, I'm sure EW will rally round and have a special Cherpie day!

yaaaay thank you! If this helps, I have just shown it to my Dad who would definitely have been able to fix it. It needs either the "solanoid" ?! rewiring or rewinding the argh forget what he said - magnet?! something. It's not the motor he says, it's the solanoid.

I subscribe to the theory that 'hot is hot'. Is there much of a difference between 41 and 43? Once it's hot; it's hot. Yep I agree. You just get used to being indoors over the summer, or adapting your lifestyle to do summer type things like beach at night instead of daytime. It doesn't really matter once it is over 40, it's too hot to do anything!

I've got the transformer, it had to come from Switzerland. It's not the transformer that is the problem, it is the motor inside the original bell. And this i[i'>s[/i'> home. And I am not selling it!! Skyhigh, have you checked on skyscrapercity.com to hook up with other people in the same position? Can I ask, did you take legal action because it wasn't being completed in line with the original dates? If the building was progressing (albeit slowly) then I think this is different to a project which was not completed. All projects from that era was around 4 years behind schedule and most investors had to just wait.

It also appears that it is Thursday, on a Tuesday. I wish it were a parallel universe, in the other universe I would NOT have come home to a slow cooker which has dinner burned and stuck to the bottom of it, the house would NOT be smelling like an incinerator and I would not have to think up something else to cook for dinner, with no ingredients. *sigh*

The new Safa school will be the furthest from everywhere you've mentioned - you'd be much better trying the original Safa which would be only 5-10 minutes away. Most schools do have buses, yes. Walking is not really an option in Dubai, unfortunately!

I've been buying all my meat from PnS - it looks so much better and is SO much cheaper. Really need to find a cheap, organic grass fed, free as a bird - egg supplier! As I am living on SO many eggs! Polly the eggs at Greenheart are good, they are organic, free range and vegetarian, (probably not quite grass fed though!!). They are also really small compared to shop bought eggs, which I think is a good sign!

Jerry Parks at Taylor Wessing is great (but also probably expensive), there's a lady lawyer in DIFC who takes on free cases sometimes (sorry no time but google). Also in Dubai they have on the Dubai Land Dept website cases of developers who have cancelled projects and the process of what will happen to the funds, not sure if it's the same in AD - were your funds in Escrow?

If the vaccinations are available in the uK, get them done there, firstly because some are only available here in Government clinics and can be difficult to obtain; secondly because if there is a lag between receiving the vaccination and it being effective you'd be better doing it sooner; and thirdly because taking time off work to go and get them done here and potentially driving from one end of the city to Karama (where the Govt ones are done) will be unnecessary hassle if you can get them done there.

Why don't you send a link to the Burj Khalifa tickets and say which day / time do you want as they are priced differently. Once booked you can also send the email booking confirmation, this way it is clear you have paid. Or just send her the link and get her to book/pay for it herself!! <hardened Grabby-Visitor survivor> (most visitors are lovely and welcome but you do get the odd few who just think it's a free holiday from all aspects, expect to be waited on hand and foot and are just cheeky). edited by Tattie Bogle on 13/10/2014

60/30/10 is the usual split. Btw the gratuity calculation below is fractioned again if you resign.... Does it make difference to the amount calculated for the gratuity if the employee resigned from employment? An employee employed under a contract for unlimited period who resigned after a continuous service of not less than a year and not more than three years is entitled to one third of the end of service gratuity provided above. If the period of continuous service was more than three years and less than five years he is entitled to two thirds of the gratuity. If his continuous service was more than five years, he shall be entitled to the full gratuity. If an employee who is employed under a contract of limited period, resigned with his free will before the end of the contract, he shall not be entitled to the end of service gratuity unless his continuous service exceeds five years.

If this has never been mentioned in any sort of contract or signed by you, there's absolutely no way he could ask you to pay it now. Service charges to a developer are not a government or municipality fee.

Licorice, is this the first you have known that the service fees have been unpaid? Most developers would have started to impose restrictions on unpaid bills for three years - this could include rubbish collection restrictions, access to swimming pools/car park barrier passes etc. It is quite unusual (not unheard of though) for a LL to ask the T to pay service fees, but it should be specifically detailed with requirements on when to pay etc, as they are usually quarterly paid in advance.
