Forgive my ignorance, but what is AH xmasbaby? Terrible_twos, thank you for this pointer. I *think* I am almost gluten free at the moment in my every day diet, but, I do love my pizza once a week. My TSH levels are and have been within range for the past one year. How could I get tested for Celiac disease? More importantly, which Doctor could I see who would work with all my symptoms and possible causes? Tattie Bogle, that's amazing! I think AH is American Hospital? Chocobella, you'd be amazed at the number of products that containe hidden gluten in them! N_K_D pizza have a yummy gluten free pizza and I believe Russo's is another place where you can gluten free pizza. Again, I really don't think you should go gluten free without doing the right tests - if you do the celiac panel blood test when you've not been eating gluten, you will get a false negative. Doctors - Dr. Rolef is a gastroenterologist who has been recommended here many times - She's one of the few doctors here who really knows about celiac disease. If you're looking for alternative therapies, then you could try going to homeopath as suggested by Tattie Bogle. Dr. Heather Eade is a naturopath in the Dubai Mall medical clinic - again she's someone who has been recommended on EW many times. If you do a search on here for endocrinologists, you'll come up with some names. I've been going to Dr. Amel B. Tayeb. edited by terrible_twos on 15/09/2013

Just to add - celiac disease has over 200 symptoms. Most doctors are not even aware of these symptoms and still think that weight loss and diarrhea to be the most common complaint of celiac disease. And if you are over weight, they will not even consider it! Chocobella, most of the symptoms you mentioned can be related to celiac disease - it causes malabsorption, so apart from you not absorbing your thyroid medication, you may be deficient in iron, vitamin D and other important vitamins and minerals. so true. I was only tested because of malabsorption (top of my weight range) and have atypical symptoms. I was insanely low in iron, vitamin d, and othes. I am low to mid-range now which is better than before. Similar for me - I was tested for celiac because my TSH levels were varying from one end to another over a period of 1 year and the doctor felt that it could be because of malabsorption of the thyroid medicine.

You might want to read up on the connection between gluten and the thyroid. Some doctors suggest going on a gluten free diet to reduce symtpoms. Also, those with Hashimotos are at a higher risk of celiac disease (some say undiagnosed celiac disease causes all other autoimmune diseases including Hashimotos, etc.). If you have Hashimotos and you see that your TSH levels are not going down (in spite of increasing doses of thyroxine), then you must ask your doctor to consider testing for celiac disease. But please do not go on a gluten free diet without consultation with your doctor and doing the right tests.

Some vendors prefer Festival City and others prefer Times square. Maybe you should try both? Festival city usually is always crowded because of Ikea and Hyperpanda. So there will always be more footfall. The flip side is that the crowd usually aren't aware of Arte markets and are always looking for a good bargain - so be prepared for those who always ask for bargains. Times square doesn't have many popular shops, and the small crowd of people who do turn up come specifically for arte markets and are prepared to spend. Different expat crowd in both malls, I feel. That's what my experience has been :) I prefer Times square. But I think you should try both. edited by terrible_twos on 03/09/2013

Just a word of caution: I'd feel more safe ordering gluten free goodies from skinny genie, sweet connections Dubai (they have a place in mercato mall from where you can buy) or gluten free supermarket UAE. All these 3 places make their products in dedicated gluten free kitchens. All the other mentioned places will have cross contamination issues. So it depends on how sensitive you/family/friends are to gluten.

AmyAus82, thanks for sharing this. I have nothing to add, no theories, but really believe that almost all illnesses are due to the food we eat and stress - whatever that causes inflammation in the body. I have couple of autoimmune diseases, but thankfully, they're not the ones that require pain medications, etc. You did mention that when you eat certain foods, your condition is exacerbated. Maybe you can try to identify which these foods are? I've read that in diseases RA, lupus, MS, etc., certain foods trigger symptoms. Don't know.... but I'm glad that you're trying to look at alternative methods. I remember reading in Gulf News last year about a lady who was diagnosed with MS and refused to take allopathic medicines. She's now a therapist here in Dubai in a holistic centre.... she somehow managed to stay healthy and is not confined to a wheelchair (like many MS patients). Maybe she's got answers. Sorry, I've been of no help, but I shall be watching this thread with interest. All the best.

The bird park in Singapore is nice as well, along with the botanical gardens. We also saw the gardens by the bay, which was lovely. Although I preferred the botanical gardens compared to the gardens by the bay....

Yes. My mom had a suspicious mole removed by him - this was some 8-9 years back in Welcare hospital. The mole was on the side of her face and the scar is barely visible. We were happy with him and the staff.

You can try calling the Aster medical centre in Bur Dubai (04-3931811). They have couple of dermatologists and even if there are no appointments available for the day, I think you can walk in and wait for your turn.

We don't drink tap water - the main reason being we don't know how clean the building water tank and pipes are. We only use tap water for cooking some foods - which require the water to be boiled. Otherwise, it's always our filtered water. We've got an Aqua guard filter installed which cost us 850. Dhs. And we need to get the filters changed every year. I personally don't think we need reverse osmosis systems here in Dubai. But, that's just my humble opinion. Do read this thread for more information on water filters, scams, etc.: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic150907-water-filter.aspx

I had something similar last week - I woke up in the morning feeling very queasy. Had very little breakfast and stayed away from work as I was feeling very weak - body ache and lethargy. Decided to have some lemon tea and then promptly threw up! Refused to eat anything the whole day apart from some fruit. I kept having some lemon juice - two table spoons lemon juice, one table spoon sugar with a pinch of salt. This will help with rehydration. I had a slight temperature of 100.7F all day. I was fine the next day - no fever, but slight stomach cramps the whole day. Again, I avoided eating anything except some fruit and a bit of khichidi (Indian dish made of white rice and handful of split moong dal) - good for the tummy. Recovered completely the 3rd day. Hope you feel better TDB!!

[email protected] can i find this raw organic coconut oil.....i'm an all in one person....thats all i can manage. How do you use this?? before bedtime? I use it at bedtime as a cleanser and moisturiser and in the morning as a moisturiser. It comes in glass jar, it's at most of the organic stores, and some supermarkets, look on the organic section. I do not find it leaves my skin greasy at all. It completely absorbs. You can use it as a make remover, rub some over your face then tissue off the excess and then if you like rinse out a warm wash cloth and wipe your face. Then I add a little on again as a moisturiser. Leaves my skin so soft and I am sure I am not getting any toxic chemicals into my body. edited by Di@DXB on 08/05/2013 Di@DXB, thanks for sharing this. I usually use almond oil to remove make-up and also use it as a moisturizer. I, however, still use face wash (filled with nasty chemicals) to clean the daily grime out - just wondering if coconut oil would be a good cleanser? And how to use it? Thanks. edited by terrible_twos on 09/05/2013

I had asked a similar question few months back: http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/topic191578-cataract-surgery.aspx Based on above recommendation and some other family member, we went to Dr. Prashant Bhatia. He's good and did a thorough check up and said that the cataract was still in the early stages and my Dad could still wait - there's no need to do the surgery urgently. He also mentioned that if my Dad was able to go about doing his day-to-day activities without any hinderance, then there was no need to rush into surgery. He went on to give the example of his grandfather who didn't do cataract surgery simply because it didn't impact his activities. I liked Dr. Bhatia's approach - he wasn't too eager to operate unlike some other surgeons. So my Dad's decided to wait. I know this doesn't exactly answer your question...

You could try the organics food and cafe - you may need to go there (or try calling them) and place the order so that they can have the cake ready by Friday. Also try contacting gluten free supermarket - they also bake gluten free cakes. www.glutenfree-supermarket.ae You can contact them on +971501154045 Happy Birthday (in advance)! Edited to add: I've never tried the gluten free cakes from either place... don't know about the taste! edited by terrible_twos on 10/04/2013

Have a look at www.glutenfreeuae.com for receipes, information, etc. They've also got a facebook page with loads of people will be able to help you out. www.facebook.com/glutenfree.uae Also check out the gluten free supermarket which delivers all over UAE and has some wonderful gluten free and other products. They also have some breads which are gluten free and dairy free and egg free - not sure about soy. But they include a list of all ingredients for each product, so it's easy to browse. www.glutenfree-supermarket.ae Most Spinneys and some Lulu hypermarkets these days have some gluten free breads, pasta, cereals, bars, etc... of course you'll need to start reading up all the ingredients to make sure they don't contain the other foods your child is intolerant to. Good luck.

Anyway, back to the original question. What is an Indian night? I know that the Arabian Center in Mizhar often hosts Bollywood stars on Friday evenings. I always assumed that the term "desi nights" was used in relation to Indian music being played at clubs.... but I could be wrong. I've never been to one, so not sure.

Thank you ladies!! You all have been very helpful. I shall have a look at the stores you've mentioned. Tattie Bogle, I've got Hashimoto's thyroiditis, so intolerance to cold is one of the symptoms (and my doctor knows). Thanks for the concern :) wuffles, the electronic heating pad sounds wonderful. But my feet sometimes get too cold when I'm driving and regular socks and shoes just don't keep them warm. So some woollen socks would be more appropriate (hopefully)!

You can try contacting the Dubai Herbal and treatment centre - they also do the allergy testing, but I don't know for how many foods and the rate. Also, check the XY clinic - I think they do these tests as well. If you are not sure which tests need to be done, then it's best to go through a doctor or nutritionist who can advise you what to do. Dr. Michael Loubser has been recommended on EW (I've never been to him, so don't know).

I've recommended Dr. Amel Tayeb here and he is very good. He takes the time to explain everything in detail, patiently listens to you, keeps up to date with new studies, etc. he spends easily 45 mins to an hour every time - you'll never feel like he's in a rush to get to the next patient. The only issue is he is usually booked 3 months in advance - but sometimes someone may cancel their appointment and you may be called early. Consultation charges are expensive - 650 Dhs.

Shocking incident. We've been watching the news over the past few weeks - the protests in New Delhi have shaken the government and rightly so. I'm hoping the media and people of India keep up the pressure on government for better laws. Of course, a change in the mindset of men is equally important.

Try a mini pizza. I tried it this week and it took about 30 minutes from start to finish. It was delicious, even though I made it from gluten free flour. I will definitely make pizzas again. I always was too scared to use yeast, but with this recipe (from their website) it is a breeze. Lettie, would you be willing to share the recipe, please? I've never made pizza from scratch using gluten free flour, and yours sounds delicious! thanks! I used this recipe as a base: http://www.mea.philips.com/ka/sa/en/index#/recipedetail/ph_AIR_037_SA_CONSUMER I added about 15ml of psyllium to the dough for more elasticity. I must add that I used my own mixture of gluten free flour. I also used my own topping. The dough is not as elastic as with normal flour and I had to add more oil to bind the ingredients, but it worked well enough. I hope your pizza is also such a big success as mine. I was very pleased with myself. Thanks Lettie!!

Just an update - I went for my medical to the Satwa clinic around 3pm and was out in 10 minutes - it was almost empty! Then went across the clinic to the Emirates ID office to get more information (I had already got the ID form typed and paid Dhs. 340). They said that I would have to get my fingerprints, etc. done... so got that done there, which took about 5 minutes as there was no queue. They said if your fingerprints are not clear, they take them again.... I think, in my case, they'll always take them again as it's never clear!!
