Happy Diwali!! Does anyone know of a temple here in Dubai? Also does anyone know of any celebrations taking place anywhere? Usually we are with family in UK but this year it's just us nd I am not sure what to do! There are two temples in Bur Dubai - one is a Krishna temple and the other one is a Shiva temple with a Gurudwara on the top. Don't even think of driving down there as getting parking there will be impossible (unless you don't mind paying Dhs. 10 for an hour in the private parking lots). You can take the bus or cab (water taxi would be good idea if you're coming from Deira side). Also the temple will be extremely crowded... so we usually avoid going there. There's also a new Gurudwara in Al Quoz somewhere (near a church)- you should be able to find it on google maps.

Thank you ShopGirl12 :) Wishing everyone a very Happy Diwali and prosperous New Year! If anyone wants to get a "feel" of Diwali, Bur Dubai would be the best place to be! Just drive around the area behind Golden sands and Bur Juman and you'll see almost all buildings covered with lights! It all looks so pretty :)

Along with the chocolates/dry fruits, you can also gift some clay lamps (available in almost all Choithrams) - there are some very pretty and colorful ones.

The best gift to take would be chocolates and dry fruits. I'm not too sure about the wine - most Hindus don't drink on festivals. You can wear semi-formal. if you have a kurti or tunic, you can pair it with leggings / skinny jeans and a matching stole. And jazz it up with some jewellery. I believe Lulu have some decent kurtis at reasonable prices.

Dubai creek striders are on Facebook, so you can always post a message on there to get more information. I think they have different groups for runners (based on pace) - slow, medium and fast.

It's better if you go to their shop as their website doesn't show all the products. You can get Patanjali products in the same shop.

I buy from the organic foods and cafe in Dubai mall. It's usually priced at Dhs. 42.50 for 4.5kg and if you buy on the 3rd Saturday of every month, you'll get 20% off. It's organic brown basmati rice and it's good.

I had gone to the store Down to Earth (in Jumeirah near the big union flag; http://www.downtoearthorganic.ae/) and saw henna powder and some of the other powders like amla, etc. they sell all organic products, so you can have a look there. Most of Indian stuff was the brand Patanjali (Baba Ramdev stuff). I have never tried any of these, so don't know if they're really good or not.

What are micro beads? Are they smaller in size than seed beads? You can get seed beads in Fida (opposite Satwa clinic) or even in Crystal house in Al Hana Centre.

I went around 10:30am today and it was packed! Is it always this crowded every Saturday? I didn't buy much as most of the veggies were over (at least the ones I wanted).

I've got FaceTime on my iPad - bought the iPad from the USA. FaceTime doesn't work for me here in the UAE, but I know it does work for some of my friends here.... Can't figure out why I'm having issues with it. edited by terrible_twos on 26/10/2012

You should be able to find coconut in the small grocery stores like Al Madina and others - especially in karama, Bur Dubai, Satwa areas. Alternatively, you can have a look in Lulu or Choithram? All these places sell the coconut water straight from the coconut - no added sugar and other nasties.

The gluten free supermarket online has organic coconut oil which is not hydrogenated. Just want to add that I've not ever bought it, so don't know what it's like. I did, however, buy Nutiva brand when I was in the USA - again, yet to try it. edited by terrible_twos on 15/10/2012

So I called Du just now and there is a Dhs. 2000 deposit (refundable). And it would take 45 days to get the deposit back! I have an Etisalat al wasel sim... maybe I'll just use that!

I've got the Elite super 100 plan from Du for my i-phone. Will I be able to make calls while I'm abroad (in case of an emergency)? I called Du just now and I was told to call back later as they didn't have the information on this now, which is rather strange!! That is DU all over, i would try and Google. Are you pay as you go or contract? Did you set up roaming before you left? I've got the contract... Not pay as you go. I've not set up roaming, I don't know if I'm supposed to and that's why I called Du. Wondering whether to call them again!

Thanks again. desertdoc, I did try to get travel insurance for my dad from AXA online, but once I entered his date of birth, it somehow didn't go any further. I tried calling AXA as well, but was kept on hold for so long, that I finally gave up :) Managed to get it all done with RSA this time. CP, I'll keep BUPA in mind the next time I need travel insurance. Thanks.

You can also buy gluten free bread from the online gluten free supermarket. They deliver all over the UAE. You also have the option of picking up your purchases from their office (and save on the delivery charge). http://www.glutenfree-supermarket.ae/

Thanks again ladies. Beebers, you've pretty much summed up what I'm concerned about. I'm going to read up on macadamia oil - first time I've heard of it! I'm curious about coconut oil - doesn't it have a strong smell when used in cooking (while heating)? Macadamia Oil is delicious :) I have never actively sought it out here, but the Waitrose in Marina Mall (perhaps other locations?) have really stepped up their inventory, They have walnut and avocado, even groundnut oil--which I don't see other places. Coconut oil, I wouldn't say it's strong, but it does go better with certain things. There is a lot of conflicting info on oil on the internet, and it can be hard to sort out the truth. Thanks Beebers.

The leather seats in my car are extremely uncomfortable during summer. Even with the air conditioner switched on, I still tend to sweat on my lower back. Where can I get covers for car seats? And can these be washed? Thanks.

My homeopathic-naturopathic health fanatic friend in the UK only cooks with coconut oil (and uses coconut flour too) but only organic of course, and I find most coconut oils here are cheap and the labels dont provide much information about additional ingredients or preparation, manufacturing process so its hard to know which brands to trust. edited by hilsbils on 08/08/2012 Organic foods and cafe have coconut oil... I'm guessing it must be organic.
