Thanks for the info on the new Rock radio - 90.7 / 90.8!! I've been waiting for ages for a radio station that plays exclusive rock songs. They seem to play more of classic rock compared to Modern alternative... but that's okay! Usually try to catch Suzanne Radford's show on Dubai eye and sometimes listen to Radio 2 (who seem to play more of current music which is quite annoying).

The gluten free supermarket is an online store where all the prodcuts are gluten free. They deliver all over the UAE. Also check out the "gluten free UAE" facebook page and ask for suggestions on eating out - there are a few restaurants that have a gluten free menu - but most places you'll need to call them in advance and speak to the chef. edited by terrible_twos on 10/02/2012

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I've never heard of manuka honey before. How is this honey different from the regular ones that we get in the supermarkets? Thanks! Here you go: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuka_honey Thanks Chocs01!

There are a couple of ladies that bake gluten free and maybe lactose free cakes.... you could get on to their facebook page and find out more: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Gluten-Free-Baking-in-Dubai/194030247305274 http://www.sweetconnectiondubai.com/ - they cater gluten intolerant, or dairy and egg allergy. http://www.gfkakes.com/ Alternatively, like mentioned by other posters, Organic foods and cafe will most probably bake one for you.

OP, I know exactly what you feel.... have been called skeleton and anorexic!! I also have random people commenting on my hair loss "you're losing hair" - uh yes, I can see that, you don't need to say it aloud! I just try to smile and ignore those comments. And no, I never comment on others' gaining (or losing) weight!

If you look/feel bloated, then it could be an intolerance. I've read that you can't really "spot reduce" - so all those sit-ups are quite useless and may harm your back instead! Also, heard some fitness experts point out that weight around your abdomen has more to do with what you eat than exercise - specifically cut down on your carbs and try to eat more protein.

Try going in the afternoons around 2:30pm on a weekday - it's relatively quiet that time (at least for ladies). I had gone some time in June and everything got done within 1.5 hours (a little less than that actually).

If you get on to ARTE's facebook page and check out the December 2011 arte soukh photos, you'll see plenty of jewellery artisans. You can leave a comment on their photos if you like something and I'm sure they'll get back to you.

I personally think it's best you check with your doctor about iron supplements as they can cause some stomach issues in some people. I've taken FeFol tablets (they are iron + folic acid) with a glass of vitamic C (put an effervescent vitamin C tablet in a glass of water). My doctor said that taking the iron tablets with vitamin C do not cause stomach cramps, etc..... Don't know about iron supplements for children.

just wanted to thank all the ladies for their views.... I've always had people say "you make lovely jewellery" and just walk by without buying. It's nice to read the buyers point of view. And yes, there is way too much jewellery - there weren't that many of us selling jewellery few years back and I think everyone did well then. Now, with the competition, it's tough, but I think that's what keeps us on our toes and makes us try out newer designs.

I also think you should try out the ARTE soukh - it's exclusively handmade products made in UAE, so you're most likely to do well there compared to school fairs. Yes, the Dhs. 200 may seem expensive, but at least the crowd that visits the ARTE soukh know that everything is handmade and are prepared to spend money. You must at least try out the december ARTE markets as people will be looking to buy Christmas presents. Also remember that you cannot have great sales in each market that you do - there will times when you sell nothing.... but keep trying (I'd say at least try ARTE for 6-8 months). And if your handbags are "one of a kind", then please do increase your price a bit and tell your customers that you do not "repeat" designs. By reducing your rates, your doing a disservice to your talent (and also other competitors around you). Good luck!!

exile, you might want to try out the exhibitions like Divalicious or Shimmer.... look them up on facebook. I know Divalicious is having a 2-day exhibition in December. There are few others as well - join up the above facebook pages and you'll probably come up with more information on other exhibitions. You could also check out the school fairs - but I don't know if they're the sort of places you'd want to sell - maybe you can try visiting them and see if they're the market you're looking for.

Awwww thanks ladies! Wuffles...am headed in that direction shortly :) Terrible_twos...hmmmm.. rice powder and food colour..have just realised how inadequate my pantry is :) i certainly don't have those to hand. Thanks though...good to know these things. And next year inshallah :D Glad your first Diwali in Dubai was good! Just wanted to clarify about the rangoli - you can use the whole rice grains (not powder) for rangoli - easier to spread compared to the colors available here. Also, if you don't have food color, you can always use turmeric powder (yellow color) and sindoor (red color). It's too late now, I know, but for next year, you'll be set :)

Wishing everyone a very Happy Diwali and prosperous, healthy and peaceful New Year!! nnair, you could always try making some rangoli outside your house - it doesn't need to be anything fancy, just simple designs like the diya or Shri Ganesh symbol. If you don't have rangoli color at home, just take some rice and mix different food colors :) If you know any neighbours celebrating Diwali, go over to their house with a small box of chocolates or sweets and wish them - it's a good way to get to know them (if you're new here)! And yes, do head down to Bur Dubai. Apart from Meena bazaar, drive around the area behind Bur Juman - lovely lights on many buildings. I especially love the building right behind Centre point (next to Bur juman) - it's just beautifully lit up.

Diwali here is generally a more private affair - you won't find any big Diwali bash in Dubai. Usually people visit their family and friends, exchange sweets and light diyas (tea light candles). If you want to get a "feel of Diwali", the best place to visit would be Bur Dubai. If go to the gold shops on Dhanteras in Bur Dubai, you'll find loads of people buying gold :) And also, check out the lovely lights on all the buildings' windows in Bur Dubai - it's just lovely to walk around there and see all that. I think the temple also would be quite crowded (never been there on Diwali, so don't know). Fire crackers are illegal in Dubai, although you'll hear the odd cracker going off on Diwali. There's a Diwali exhibition in Discovery gardens on October 22nd (11am to 5pm) for kids and parents. The kids can get henna, paint diyas, etc. and for the parents, there will be a bazaar to buy Diwali goodies. edited by terrible_twos on 16/10/2011

Appletiser, I can't remember the exact price, but I think I bought the shampoo for less than Dhs. 30. With 20% discount, it'll come up to approx. Dhs. 24 (for 8 oz or 236 ml). Don't think it's that expensive.... Now does it work well? I'm using the green apple and ginger extract one which helps to build volume for fine hair. I think it works fine (not better or worse than regular shampoos)! Honestly, the only reason I bought it was because it's gluten free. And if it's free from all scary chemicals, then that's a plus. Some other organic ones available at the organic food store: http://www.organicfoodsandcafe.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=84&Itemid=84 Perhaps I'm missing something here, but why would you buy gluten free shampoo? I mean, unless you drink it? Lol! I hope she doesnt drink it! Would your head know the difference between shampoo with gluten or not anyways? LOL! Don't worry, I'm not drinking it! It may sound silly but I figured if gluten is bad for my intestines (have celiac disease), it's possibly bad for my hair :) I have to admit that using the gluten free shampoo didn't help with the hair fall. But I liked the shampoo and have continued to use it. You'd be amazed the extent to which quite a few people, with celiac disease, avoid gluten.

Thats quite pricey for a shampoo.... I just use Sunsilk and Cremesilk (dhs15 each) and they work great on my hair. Hehe! Guess I would have to live with the SLS. Yeah :) But I used one bottle for over 8 months... which isn't bad :) I agree with you - if we worry about everything we put into our mouths or on to our skins, we wouldn't be able to eat anything!

Without googling...what is SLS, why is it in things, and what can it do to you?... (sorry for being lazy :D) MB (or BM??), SLS is sodium laurel sulfate - nasty chemical found in all our soaps, shampoos, etc.... I've included a link in my reply to Appletiser which will give you more information.

You could try changing the method of hair removal you are using. I've gone back to shaving my legs as I get a lot more ingrown hairs with waxing or an epilator. For a non permanent hair removal method, shaving is best for me. Me too.... shaving has reduced the amount of ingrown hairs compared to waxing or epilator.

There's a nuts and seeds shop called Bhatkal on the road opposite the Dubai Museum (Bur Dubai). I've seen pine nuts with the shell there. You'll also find them in most Iranian shops. I've also seen them in Global Village - in the Iranian pavilion. I love pine nuts as well - especially the ones from Pakistan! But they're horribly expensive here.

the dance classes are good fun. I've only done the 1st level (there are 4 levels - each level has 15 classes). In 15 classes (1 hour per class), you'll learn to dance on one particular song. The 1st half hour of the class is a bit of warm-up. In the second half hour, they'll teach you to dance on that one song which you get to perfrom at the end of the 15 classes on stage in front of an audience. The song picked can be any style - contemporary jazz, bhangara, etc. So each batch (from each of the 4 levels and from different venues) performs on stage at the end of the 15 classes. Sometimes, the stage performance is only for the learners and sometimes you can get your family and friends to see you perform on stage. Apart from this, sometimes they have sessions where they'll teach you 3 different styles in 15 classes.... again, there's only so much you can learn in 15 classes. If you're looking to learn one particular style, then you may not find these classes very helpful (unless you do all the 4 levels). Some people, after finishing level 4, continue to do level 4 simply because they enjoy it so much! edited by terrible_twos on 28/08/2011

So if someone is selling stuff at ARTE, its okay........ and it doesn't matter if the person already works elsewhere, that is, is on another visa? It makes no difference? No, it doesn't matter if you're already working elsewhere, you can still sell handmade arts/crafts/baked food at ARTE without any problem. And I have to say this, I've eaten some of the baked goodies at previous ARTE soukhs and have never fallen ill... in fact, I know few others who have also eaten there without any issues.

Sandy, it usually takes around 7-9 hours to set. The first 3-4 batches eaither don't set in that time, so I usually leave them out for another few more hours (sometimes even 24 hours)! Sometimes, it will set, but won't taste right - too bland (and not sour the way we like it). If your yoghurt sets, but tastes like curdled milk, maybe you need to cool it a bit more before adding the spoon of yoghurt? If it doesn't set at all, then don't cool the milk down too much (should be hot, but not boiling hot). If it doesn't set and tastes like curdled milk, then I really don't know - maybe the live yoghurt you're using is causing the problem? I must add that I use Dano low fat milk powder. I've tried fresh milk couple of times and the first one took ages to set. The second time I tried was much better. Have you ever tasted yoghurt in any restaurant (most Indian restaurants have yoghurt) here and really liked the taste? Next time you go there, maybe you can "take away" their yoghurt and try using that for your live yoghurt :) It just might work.

Sandy, it's a bit of trial and error. I've tried low fat Sterilac yoghurt and low fat Al Ain yoghurt before.... what generally happens is the first 3-4 batches of yoghurt are not perfect. Just keep changing the temperature of the milk (either heat it more or less) and you'll eventually end up with the right yoghurt :) Also, cover the pot with a napkin or something to keep it warm.... if the consistency doesn't seem right after 10-12 hours, keep the pot covered for few more hours (keep checking if it's done every couple of hours). Sorry if this doesn't help.... like I said, it's trial and error.

Yes - the others are a lot smaller than Fida but I find them a lot more amenable and they will properly bargain with you (I've never managed to get Fida to drop their prices at all). My personal favourite habadasher is a small Indian shop that I don't know the name of but is easy to spot, as he's the only one along there that sells sewing machines - they are all in his window. If you were standing outside Fida facing the road, walk right along Al Satwa Road and you will find it. If you get as far as classic city, you've gone too far! This shop is stuffed - literally floor to ceiling - with stuff, so if you can't immediately see what you want, do ask (and then feel really stupid when he shows you its exactly where you've just been looking!). Incidentally, he also sells sewing machine bobbins at 1 - 2AED a piece! There are also some other habadashers if you turn left out of Fida. Thank you shamat!! Just to get the direction right since I don't know classic city - if I stand facing Fida's entrance, is the sewing machine shop on Fida's left or right?
