We're planning to stay at The Tea Sanctuary in January http://www.theteasanctuary.com/index.htm The people who've been have nothing but good things to say about the place. The bungalows are british era ( original 80 - 100 year old places) and the plantations are 1000's of hectares, some of the biggest in the world. Very, very cheap but very beautiful. These are part of an actual working plantation, used to be accomodation for the British staff that used to run the tea estates. No swimming pools but plenty of nature and golf for everyone.

Have you thought about Mirdiff? Especially near Mirdiff City Centre? or even Badia, Festival city? Rebat road connects Mirdiff/Badia directly to the Airport and there's no traffic in that direction so your DH could be at work in 15 - 20 minutes. Also you would face a shorter commute time than travelling from DSO. We've travelled a couple of times during peak hours to RAK ( from Qusais) and it's taken my slow driving DH about 1 hour one way.

I think it means that the mango season is nearly over. A Pakistani friend told me so after I had found a worm in a mango sold here in Denmark last year. It was quite a traumatic experience since the fruit looked perfect on the outside, and the worm was really really large and gross. Mango worms are just ... YUCK! Have you tried googling Mango worms? Be warned the results are graphic and nausea inducing!! oh and just to clarify they are not the ones found in mangoes ( those are usually maggots).

To get to the souks will be easy once the green line is open ( Sept. 9). The Palm Deira stop will get you to the fish and vegetable market, the Hyatt Regency and the Corniche there. It is also possible to walk to the Gold Souq from here. The Al Ras station will get you to the Gold souq, Ahmadiya school, the Spice souq (will be a 10 minute walk), the whole Naif & Baniyas areas. The Ghubaiba Station on the Bur Dubai side will give you easy access to the Shindagha village area, all the shops in that area, and easy access to the quieter part of the creek. The Saeediya/Fahidi Station is near Fahidi street or commonly known as Meena Bazaar. Walk through Meena Bazaar to reach the Dubai Museum, the Hindu temples, the Bastakiya, and the textile souq adjoining the creek. I've seen the Al Ras and Palm Deira stations and they are by far the best looking stations. They've been built to match old Dubai style so they don't look like the other stations -- very, very pretty. Can't wait for the line to open!!!

Don't think they can do anything about it. It's quite normal, happens in trees that have not been sprayed with pesticide. There's no way to detect it - the mango could look and smell quite normal but be all wormy ( ?) inside :)

Mayden racecourse is all sign posted easy access from al ain rd ...can't miss it...:) You don't know me driving with my "trusty" GPS for company - we make a truly awful team ;) The GPS hates SZR and will do anything to avoid it, whereas it's my favourite way to get from A to B :) You can imagine how I go round in circles in my battle to get the GPS to go past Salik toll bridges :) Not too dificult to get to Creek Park. Straight down SZR, towards sharjah, till you can see Wafi. Take exit 11 off SZR just before Wafi ( it will wind up over SZR). At the next signal, take the right, and straight down till you reach Dubai Creek Park. There's a junction before. Just keep going straight. The road ends at the park. Al Seef street is the street in front of the British and Saudi consulates. Do not recommend going there. It will be crowded. HTH

There is no metro station near Festival City. The nearest would be the Emirates HQ one. Thats a very, very long walk, along the main road, possible during nice weather, now near impossible in the heat. There may be feeder buses from the station though.

Personally I don’t feel safe walking around Deira or Karama I found it quite seedy especially with all those leering men. Its my opinion sorry if you don’t like it, I don’t really care what you tell your friends I would not let my children go to those places the same as I won’t let them go to certain places in London. I think you are living in a bubble don’t you think rape and theft is rife in places like Karama and Deira ? Maybe you should do a little bit of research. Thanks for letting me know I'm living my life in a bubble. I just told you that I have friends who live in these areas. My whole social/shopping life is centered around Sharjah,Deira and Bur Dubai. For someone who doesn't live there, has not been there for a long time , you certainly make assumptions about rape and theft being rife. Where you would send your kids is your business, just because you feel it is seedy doesn't make it so for others. Maybe I should assume things about London, especially knife crime, seeing those huge knife bins prominently displayed in areas around Kensington, which is where we stay when we visit.

It's not the kind of place I'd love my teenager to hang out. I understand people saying yes its perfectly safe, but no where is perfectly safe in the world. If you read the papers there's alot more crime prostitution drugs etc goingon down there then around the ranches or the springs. Also you get alot more men hanging about and staring at the youngsters, not that u don't get that anywhere else u just get more of it up in karama. Good for you, if thats what you want for child - that is what you must do. Both Deira nd Bur Dubai are very densely populated, there are more people living in these areas, than there is in the rest of Dubai combined. I know several people who have multiple properties in the Meadows, AR, etc, yet choose to live in Karama and Deira, because they've lived their whole lives there - kids and all.

I’m not jumping on you, I just don’t like people painting an unnecessarily bad picture of the UK constantly. Would you let your teenage children out in Karama or Deera (sp) at night (or during the day for that matter) I wouldn’t, its the same in the UK... good places and bad. Hope your enjoying your summer, shame about the weather LOL Whats wrong with Karama and Deira? It's perfectly safe for women to be there at any time of day, I've personally been in both areas well into the night with no problems whatsoever. Annoys the **** out of me when people post stuff like this without any evidence. Did you personally have a bad experience in these places? If not, come alongwith me and i'll introduce you to families with teenage kids who have lived there for years and lead perfectly normal, safe nights!... [i'>Yes actually I personally know of 2 murders that happened in Deira that were not reported in the papers there have also been lots of reports of drug, knife and gang crime in Karama, so no, I wouldn’t let my children go there on their own. [/i'> Why is it that you post on this forum solely to bash Dubai ( not that it doesn't need bashing) but have not one good thing to say about it? Your anger with the place is truly curious!! [i'>Look through my posts I think you will find you are wrong on that one.[/i'> You know of two murders in Deira? So you are basing your opinion of Karama based on reports, not actual experience of living there or families who've lived in these places? So whats the difference between you and other posters who believe what they read in the papers/Tv about the Uk and choose to form their opinions? I'll just tell my friends that they are living in high crime areas and they should lock up their kids, then.

Still haven't worked out why some people pay it and other don't though... But Healthcare City is considered a new build. Wonder if expats in older parts of the city pay?!

Maybe because a lot of people don't really understand the lyrics? I've noticed that non native speakers of English , sometimes don't get the lyrics at all, they just like the music and the beats. Language in rap/hip hop music tends to go over most people heads. Having said that, if the store attendant knew what he was doing was wrong, then it's good that you complained about it.

The only bits censored was the Imran/actress ( the one who plays the journalist, don't know her name) scene in the hotel? Don;'t think any of the "Guts n glory" bits were censored at all. ;) I've never heard a theatre full of people react , very loudly at that, to scenes in the movie. So much laughter and so many "ewwhh " comments, the audience reaction was just as fun as the movie. Do you know what? I agree with EVERYTHING you say tkoshy, to a point. I made the comment waste of space and I mean it. Too often we make many many excuses for lack of knowledge, awareness, upbringing, economics. But please tell me how the father who wrote into the gulf news, via email, via the internet, on a news site can claim lack of knowledge or awareness or education? he speaks english, reads it well, has access to at least a computer and the interwebby and reads the paper carefully. He has NO EXCUSE for not knowing what harm will come to his precious daughter when he has access to the whole world of information out there. So yep, waste of space and breath. Just because someone has access to the web and is functional enough to use it, doesn't mean that he/she will automatically go out looking for info. Most of the time, people only research stuff when they are confronted with situations that demand that knowledge. Today that person will be forced to seek out info that he would perhaps never have thought important to know. Does he deserve to be called names? You still seem to think so, I just think thats rude.

With respect tkoshy - anyone who can afford to drive and maintain a car SHOULD also be responsible for whomever is in that car. Yes, there are poorer people than others - it's the same anywhere in the world - things weren't flush when I was growing up. Having said that when it comes to protecting my children then I will pay anything. I am fortunate to be able to pay for a car seat - if I couldn't then I most probably wouldn't be able to afford or run a car either. Sometimes in life there comes something that needs to be enforced without excuse and not having the money to pay for a car seat is an excuse - go without a car then. We all have (usually) 9 months to prepare for a child - if that means putting a little aside every month to ensure you can afford a car seat for them then that has to be done. I don't believe in name calling and nor do I believe this is a cultural issue - it is the same for everyone that drives a car - Buckle Up, not just your child but anyone that is in the car. edited by Redlesley on 29/06/2011 I agree with everything that you posted, I don't think I have posted anything contrary to what you've said. I never said taht I agree with not getting a carseat, I just said I know what those commentors were talking about, I understand them. I just don't think they need to be judged for their comments. My problem was with the "tone" of the posts on this thread.

@ Redlesley, I have been actively following your campaign and, like I said, managed to get my hands on quite a few of the pamphlets and stickers that were being handed out and have put them on the cars around here. 2 families have since put in car seats. The rest, I'm going to try again. Yes, you are talking about lives, yes, it is frustrating, it can make your blood boil - none of those things are reasons for calling people names for being unaware, for not understanding how important the subject is when, in their lives , a carseat is unknown. Would you like your father being called any of the names on this thread? Or maybe the posters who judge , should maybe realise that if your parents hadn't had you because they lacked the funds for a carseat/the knowledge, then maybe such a law wouldn't have come about in the UAE today. @ Greenish... I don't find comments like that frustrating because I know to expect them. That is the cultural difference talking here. Depending on the person, I am stern/insistent about my advice or I will get somebody that they will listen to, involved. There are is so much cultural and financial reasons as to why people are resistant and it is difficult to change them, if you don't try to atleast see it from their POV. I understand why that commentor put 400 dhs before his child. I know where that comment came from. @ SRdoucet, no people really don't know that holding an infant while in the back is not safe. For those that know and still do it, no excuse - they will, maybe, be forced to confront the consequences of their actions. Again the law is a great idea, now people will be "forced" to do so. But the only people who will be economically impacted by the fine are the very people who will struggle to put carseats in their "small" cars. For those with money, it won't make much of a difference - the evidence is there in our daily lives.

Every time this topic comes up, I sit on my hands. I agree with carseats, just find the judgemental attitude on this thread unbelievable. If you know all about carseats and their importance, go out and educate. Don't jump on people who are new to the idea and concept and who worry about costs. And for the sake of clarification, I'm talking about the commentors on the Gulf News article. Come with me and I will introduce you to people who don't know what a carseat is, why their child should not be in a car unrestrained and for whom Dh 400 is a big deal. For whom a small car is a big deal.If you look around and pay attention, you will see that 50% of the population is like that. Are they berks/wastes of space/numpties, etc because they have not been educated about them. Because they have/ don't know anybody who has them, don't know/haven't heard of children dying as a result of being unrestrained? So they should have not had children because they could not afford carseats?! So instead of suggesting ideas for families with small cars and 3 kids, judge them, tell them that if they don't want to spend, they should not have kids and then come rant on here about them!! Incredible. If you know all about carseats and child safety, then thank your lifetime of education and your circumstances for that knowledge and conviction. If you do not come from such a background, child safety in a car is an alien concept. And before I get jumped on, I have no kids, but when I do, I will get them. But for my part, I will not judge. Why? I grew up without them. Everybody I know, grew up without them, unharmed. Entire generations travelled about and still do without car seats. Does that make them !diots/St00pid? No, just unaware. I educate those closest to me, hopefully their actions will educate others. I went and got pamphlets from Lesley's campaign and put them on all the cars in my neighborhood , of the people I know have small kids and who didn't have a carseat. Will I be angry if I see them out and about without carseats? No, just try harder next time. I will also not slag people off, who struggle to make ends meet and count every dirham. But will suggest alternatives to them. The law may force people to do stuff out of fear but without proper education, it completely misses the point . It will end up affecting the lower income population in this country, just like every other traffic rule and regulation.

The Turkish property market has had a bad press for several years and for good reason. Lots of expats have lost lots of money as they became too trusting. It is a relatively simple process, but there are issues. This is advice based on a different area of Turkey. Firstly you need to ensure that you can legally buy property in a certain area. This is done by obtaining military clearance. In my area this took us 5 weeks, but we were told it normally takes 3 months. It is best to get a company to do this for you as they will be able to obtain the correct documents from the seller and get it to the right office to get it processed. Once you have MC you will then need to obtain a Tapu (title deeds). For us this was a quick procedure and was done in 1 day. This involves submitting MC, the sellers tapu and some other paperwork to the land registry department. All parties (all sellers and buyers or your power of attorney) then need to go to the land registry and sign official documents. If there is a debt on the property the transfer cannot be made. The problems most people have had in Turkey is that, particularly for a new build, they have paid for the property upfront before getting the tapu (which is standard). However, a lot of builders have gone under and the purchasers have been left with nothing. There are also some unscrupulous builders out there who have just done a runner or sold the property to someone else. If you are looking to buy, get a property which has been finished and has something called a habitation certificate (this is to say that it has been 'approved' by the council). You can tell by looking at the sellers tapu - the box called KAT MÜLKIYETI will be ticked. You have to pay a yearly tax for services but this is very cheap! we have had some issues with our builder - he basically could not afford to pay his half of the property tax so we ended up paying but that secured the property in our names. Thank you summerbreeze. That was very informative. We have been told to enlist the help of a good agent/lawyer - did you use anyone/can you recommend anyone? Which company did you use for getting your MC? We are looking at apartments that have already been built, so don't have worries about them doing a runner. We are looking in the Tasdelen area of Istanbul. Currently checking out the builder and their other projects. Hopefully all will go well.

if u get from amazon, can u play it on the wii i buy here? There is some middleeast version, us version, uk version , etc right? Just for info - there are 3 versions of the Wii - NTSC usually marked as "u", Pal marked as "e" and the Japanese version marked as "NTSC -j". Both NTSC and Pal versions are available in the UAE because different shops import from different places. The Wii's from US, Canada, Australia are primarily NTSC. NTSC would be better as there are more game titles available in the UAE market for that console. Want to know which version your Wii is? "On the system menu screen of your Wii, in the lower-left corner, is the Wii Options button. Click on it. Now click on Wii Settings. You will be presented with the Wii System Settings 1 page. In the upper-right corner is the current Wii Firmware you are running. Let's see this example: the wii firmware is 4.2. The letter next to the number represents the region. Example: 4.2u=NTSC, 4.2e=PAL, 4.2j=NTSC-J" All the games that you asked for are available here, Wii exercise titles are not popular at all so shops may have only a few in stock. If the game you're looking for is not available at the major retailers at the mall, try the Al Ain computer plaza. There are plenty of game retailers who might stock the games you want. Alternatively, try the following shops - Fantastic Gaming - 050 5258714 - difficult to get to - they are in Meena Bazaar, opp. Choithram supermkt, in a small lane. They currently have 3 Wii Zumba games available. Gamestreet Trading, AL Khawaneej - 04 2892827. This store was highly recommended to me, no personal experience. Joystiq Trading, Satwa - 04 3985444- just round the corner from Al Mallah. They don't have Zumba, but have plenty of other Wii titles. You don't need the Wii fit for fitness games. Lots of games that involve working out without the board. 1 that I have is EA Sports Active http://tiny.cc/fri7y I also have the Wii fit and that works too. It sets up a profile and helps you track your BMI and other stuff. Hope I haven't confused you more. The Wii does work for me if I keep at it, but I've heard from people who are relatively fit that it does nothing for them. Best of luck

Get a Wii, if the primary users are your kids and you. It has loads of games that include not only fitness, but also dance, sports, etc so if you want to keep active, there are plenty of titles to choose from. It's also cheaper than the other consoles. Just keep in mind that the Wii Fit is an accessory that has to be purchased in addition to the Wii. Carrefour seem to have the cheapest prices/bundle offers. I would also suggest a visit to the Al Ain center to look at consoles/games just to check out prices, as in the long run, it's the games themselves that are going to be your main expense. Also try out the consoles at Toys r us and Sharaf DG, before you buy so that you have a feel for the consoles. There's a place in DFC called Living Rooms video games cafe, that charges 70 aed/hour , where they have all the consoles ( Xbox, PS3 and Wii) and loads of game titles that you can play/try out. 04 - 2329291. A half day trip is going to be hectic but very doable. We used Khasab Tours and Travels. If you want to do the cruise in the morning, then you have to get there ( at the port) by 9 am. There are also trips that leave in the afternoon. There were about 4 families with us ( all but 2 were separately booked), one of whom had very small kids. There were 2 families who did a day trip , they said it took them around 3 hours ( which should be right if you are doing the max speed limit). My DH is a slowpoke and I'm a picture taker, so it took us 4 hours from Mirdiff. The cruise we did, they provided us with plenty of fresh fruits, water, black tea and soft drinks. There's a small loo and a wash basin on board. We cruised around looking for dolphins, saw lots of them ( and because there were very young kids on board, the guys took extra effort to find and show the kids dolphins). Moored of Telegraph island for about an hour, while everybody went swimming and diving, and then came back. Had a very nice time. HTH

Think seems to be the best one around - so where should I get it from and how much are they ? Carrefour or plug in's ? Have no idea how much they should be and also does it come with maps for Europe or is that something extra I have to buy ? Thanks all ;) We shopped around and Carrefour had the best price. We bought a Garmin Nuvi 1410 ( touchscreen) , not sure about the price, paid around 900 dhs , got a 50 dhs C4 voucher though. It has maps of the GCC and the Levant. Europe maps are extra. HTH

Anon, could you post the name of a salon in the Nahda area? Every place I go to don't seem to understand and always point to the sugar wax. Thank you Specialist Beauty Salon which is right next to Beit al Khair Society building across from NMC Hospital I'm sure they do halawa because they just offered it to me the other day for my hairy arms! Thank you, I'm sure they will be very pleased to see me then. :) edited by tkoshy on 31/05/2011 <em>edited by tkoshy on 31/05/2011</em>

PPS. I used to use Lurpak but have now taken to using Rachel's Organic Butter [salted or unsalted as required'> because I think it has a better flavour. Plus, it comes in 'stick' form [ie a lot of US recipes ask for 1 or 2 'sticks' of butter, a stick being 125g. Rachel's butter comes in 250g blocks, which is far easier to deal with than the UK brands which seem to come in 200 or 400g blocks. Picky, perhaps, but that's the way I go these days'>. :) Just to let you know, Lurpak also has small sticks of butter now, each stick is 50 gm.

Not much help now, but perhaps next time you need to open a bottle of wine without a corkscrew, try this Open a wine bottle with your shoe- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuGfjtBffiE It's worked for me and I'm as clumsy as they come. ;)

Damas, Joy Alukkas, Malabar, Atlas, Tanishq and Sky jewellery are all dependable Indian brands. I would say Tanishq would be the most expensive, with regard to making charges, and Atlas the cheapest. Lots of shops in and around Karama Centre, Lulu centre and the Karama shopping block.

The mall is on Maktoum Road and just across from Union Metro station. I think there is an exit from the station right next to the mall. I agree with Lettie, it's beautiful on the top floor , you can spend ages ( and lots of money) there.

Try the Al Ain Computer Plaza in Bur Dubai. http://tinyurl.com/3ggupp3 Can't recommend any shops but they have booths on the ground floor that sell games and might know where to go. Otherwise you could try asking Geekay , the shop that specialises in gaming, or Virgin as to where you can go. HTH

There are two types commonly available here - the winding type, which is easier to handle http://lakshmiammal.files.wordpress.com/2006/12/oct-218.jpg and the pressing type, which I find takes a lot of effort - http://food.sulekha.com/from-grandma-s-kitchen-string-hoppers-idiyaappam-id280-24604-recipe.htm Both are available in Lulu. Also string hopper ( traditional name is Idiyappam ) flour is available in Lulu - the best brands are Nirapara and Double Horse. Hope it turns out well. )
