Bookmunch cafe on Al Wasl Road. Pretty quiet, comfy chairs/couches, good food and drinks and reasonable prices. It's perfect for working or studying.

You could try the Yours clothing store in Ghurair mall, they have larger sizes Since they are made for the overweight, they tend to shape clothes to fit and flatter better. Not sure if they would be called trendy, you could check the website to check the style before venturing out. Mirdiff City center has a Ulla popken store (more older style thought) and an Evans which is good. Matalan, also in MCC,carries larger sizes . H&M also have a larger section, only in their Dubai Mall store. HTH

People are being laid off, not very obvious yet but quietly. Either jobs are being removed entirely or rehiring is done at much lower pay. Retail (not sure why this is?) and government related contract work are feeling the pinch. I know that the banks are tightening credit. Friends who are business owners were complaining about the more than usual controls on loan applications. Either something is going on or we are imagining it.

Hi! Have you managed to certify your copies? I have the same problem now. Its just passport copy I need to certify. Where I can do this? Hi, I had my documents attested by a solicitor, Andy Lyons, at Davidson & Co legal consultants on Sheikh Zayed Road, at the Shangri La hotel offices. It's been 2 years so probably best to call and check he still does it. HTH

This is quite old school...reminds me of my childhood. Our ""bayya, bayya"" guy would bring clothes, perfumes, cosmetics to the door, and all the mothers would sit around , drink tea, gossip, haggle with him, while the kids ran riot. I live in Qusais too, and it"s pretty common here and in Deira - Bur Dubai. I've had CD/DVD guys, water purifiers, restaurant vouchers, clothes, cosmetics, etc etc It's a way for small businesses to earn money from people who would otherwise not be their customers and salesmen/women are usually doing this for a second source of income. Buyer beware though.

All the expenses with taxes mean that as expats their lives are far more expensive than ours here in Dubai But of course, you have to consider that the reason some things like childcare and live-in maids are so cheap in Dubai is that the people doing the jobs are paid so very little. I also value things like daily bin collections (vs every fortnight in the UK Again, the reason daily bin collections happen here is that the bin men are paid less than peanuts. In the UK, the bin men are paid a living wage and when they finish work, they don't have to wait for a minibus to take them back to the labour camp where they live for 3 years at a time without getting to see their families, they get in their car and drive home to their families. We should never forget that. In total agreement about the low wages and working conditions. However, that is a totally different discussion. Does not change the fact that expat life can be expensive in the UK, for an expat, more than Dubai. Also, with regard to low wages, many things mentioned in this thread, from food, clothes, toys, electronics, etc are cheap in the UK because they are produced by millions of people in third world countries for less than UK standard living wages. Again, a different topic altogether.

The cost of living has gone up everywhere. Childcare, petrol and food are very expensive in the UK and far less in Dubai so if you "want/need" to work its a better place to be. Dubai is now a first world country ......and that comes at a price. Food certainly isn't more expensive in the UK. The other 2 I do agree with My food shopping at Xmas cost almost half the price of Dubai This is something I see all the time on this board - that the UK is cheaper than Dubai. However, the comparison is always living costs of a citizen vs that of an expat to a culture that is very different from their own. I can tell you, from personal experience, that as an expat in the UK, trying to live a life similar to my home country or Dubai- food, childcare and owning a vehicle is far more expensive than Dubai. Veggies, fruit,meat/fish, spice mixes, kitchen utensils/vessels, etc that are not native to the UK/europe cost far more there than they do here with limited choices. Which is what expats from the UK experience here, for the same reasons. Everything's imported. Friends of ours are going to be paying 800 £/month for their one year old for daycare starting next month. Another friend has decided to quit her job as she has 2 kids and daycare for both will be too much for them. Don't have kids of my own, but am told that is expensive even by Dubai standards. They don't live in big cities. Most are on work visas , so not eligible nor receive any benefits. The NHS is not that great if you have problems that are deemed not immediate. Which adds to healthcare bills - acquaintances were told they would have a 2 year wait period for fertility treatments, so they went private. First round, which was unsuccessful, just cost them 4500 £, which in their home country is exorbitant rates and about the same as Dubai. All the expenses with taxes mean that as expats their lives are far more expensive than ours here in Dubai. Some are in it for the long term, so accept the costs ( mind that venting about rising prices is universal, even from relatives in cheaper countries :) ) and make a life. Others will move on once their contracts are done or it becomes too expensive.

You might have to go in person. We found that the decision is very much at the discretion of the official who handles your application. We, recently, sponsored my SIL and her 2 kids for a months vacation. We live in a 2 bed and have no kids, salary is not an issue. The lady who took our application told us to come back and see her and her only because we needed an additional document and scribbled something on our papers. When we came back, she was not at her desk. So while waiting we were told rather aggressively to see somebody else. He not only told us that we couldn't sponsor them since we had kids (!) , and lived in a 2 bed. We told him we didn't have kids, and somehow that turned into us being liars! Ultimately, the supervisor came over, tapped a few keys and, then, we had no kids. But even then , we couldn't sponsor. By now, the lady had come back and the supervisor took the papers to her. She gave us a dressing down for going to someone else, told off/argued for us with her supervisor and processed our papers. We ended up with visa the same day. Moral : check around. There has been a recent raise of salary limit for sponsoring wife and kids. Someone may be interpreting the law quite strictly.

Reminds me of the time I suggested an after-work-get-together to colleagues for DH's birthday (not DH yet) at the pub next door to our office. Only once we arrived some members of the party were most shocked that I was not paying for all their food and drink, with one even telling me that as I had 'invited' everyone it was assumed I was paying for everything - I could just about scrape enough together for a few bags of crisps :\: until one kind gent stepped in and paid for snacks for everyone! Those colleagues clearly need a lobotomy. They should be ashamed to think someone would pay for all their drinks and food just for inviting them along. Some people just have no class. I think this is cultural - if I've invited people for a party/get together, I would be embarrassed if my [i'>guests[/i'> have to pay for food and drinks. What is the point then of inviting people ? Especially, if they are not close friends? The only exceptions are a potluck/BYOB/poor student. I would be annoyed too, if invited and asked to pay at venue. Would not tell the hosts, but will avoid them like the plague. Flowerpot, suggest that you head over to park and ask first. Since you've asked the question, I'm assuming that people generally don't pay for anything but gifts. Not sure anyone is going to say anything but am sure people will think it.

I don't know if you've already moved, but my suggestion is to stay in Ahmadi. KOC provides accommodation for its employees - usually, villas with gardens for families - in the Ahmadi area. The KOC area is family friendly, very close knit, with a couple of churches, a huge park and a club for KOC employees. Very quiet, very residential, very green and so very different from the rest of Kuwait. Last I heard, easy to get booze & bacon - US Base nearby FTW - also, so some great house parties. Ahmadi also makes it close to Wafrah farms, Khiran resorts and chalets plus miles of empty beaches that are so much more cleaner and better than the ones closer to the main areas. The English School in Fahaheel is one of the better schools in Kuwait. It started as a community school so has managed to keep up those standards. No kids of my own, but parents of kids who go there seem to have very high opinions. For grocery and shopping needs, there is Fahaheel, which is like 10 minutes away. I think it has a Lulu supermarket? . There is a Sultan Center ( for western goods) in Al Kout Mall ( the mall has the usual stores found everywhere in Kuwait). Lots of restaurants and independent shops in Fahaheel, Mangaf and Fintas. Don't be afraid to try the small restaurants. Most have good food, at very reasonable prices. I only know of 1 hotel in the area - the Mansher (?) Rotana? No alcohol, but couple of nice fine dining restaurants. Otherwise you're best bet is the newly renovated Messilah beach complex towards the city. Great hotel with wonderful beach , and facilities, plus they have annual memberships for the family for beach, gym, etc access If you want more of a city life, Salwa would be better. Lots of expats, loads of restaurants, and shopping at your doorstep. Not as much expat bonding as Ahmadi. Traffic is a bit crazy, and for your husband and kids, it will be a 30 -40 minute drive each way to work and school ( 2 big highways, with loads of cameras and some crazy ass drivers). Either way, Kuwait can be fantastic for family life. Not many things to do or see so plenty of time to focus on family and friends. Just make sure to be careful around Kuwaitis. Hope this helps. Best of luck

Don't know if this is in time, but the youth hostel is right below the Stadium metro stop on the Green line. Its right after the Lulu supermarket in Qusais, on al Nahda road. So it would be Al Mulla plaza, then Stadium, then Lulu, then hostel. Take ittehad road all the way to Dubai police HQ and then take a right after it onto Al Nahda. Best way is to take the metro - its less than a minute's walk.

Having done the PCC two weeks back, all they needed was a passport copy with residence, 2 photos ( don't know why, but we didn't have it and the officer said that's ok, we didn't give any) and Emirates id. No fingerprinting if you have Emirates id. Try and find the nearest "Government mall" - in New dubai, Barsha has one. Failing which try your local police station. We did it twice, both times finished it in 15 minutes. Don't ever go to the Port Rashid station. They have too many applications and consequently, took a week to get mine ( after they forgot it a couple of times). HTH

Thank you for the replies. As part of an application, we are supposed to submit True Certified Copies ( photocopies) of our Fixed deposit certificates, in lieu of originals. So, basically, just need someone with authority to take a photocopy of our FD certificates and stamp them saying that they are original copies! Littlefox, that is attestation, no? Proving that the document in question is legitimate and issued by a legal bank. There is a bank statement with all these details that has already been attested, so no issues there. Thanks again ladies.

Wtf! Why on earth are you feeling bad? He STOLE from you. So he has a few tears in his eyes, and you believe he was remorseful? He just realised he was caught, and would probably have been arrested and deported had you taken it further. In all probability he's still working there. did the manager tell you they are firing him? I would have done what you did, and escalated it, if the company didn't take me seriously. But I would never feel bad about doing it. He committed a crime wilfully. No excuses.

Doesn't drink and does not like sweet stuff, plus our tastes in clothes, jewellery , etc vary so wildly.. Thought I would buy her some savoury stuff online. Took a look at the link, Myers does a pamper gift card which sounds really nice. Might go that route. Just an additional question, is it expensive to post stuff from here to Australia by regular post. Saw jewellery at a craft market here she may like, was wondering if that was feasible. thanks again

Not a parent, but as non native English speaker, it's all about language at home and school, and media consumption. I speak 5 languages- 4 non-native, English being one of them. As an expat kid, parents spoke exclusively in my mother tongue at home (until nursery)- didn't learn to read or write it at that time. Schooling was done in English language Indian schools. Also learnt 2 other languages at school - Arabic being one. English , Hindi and Arabic fluency was greatly helped by regularly using the languages at school and watching/reading movies/Tv shows /books. Arabic cartoons were a craze when I was growing up. My parents were strict about reading - in different languages, newspapers were the cheapest source. It's easier to learn reading and writing a language when you speak it. Does that make sense? I learnt to speak my mother tongue long, long before I learnt to read and write it. I only learnt when i was in my teens, so it was easier to assign sounds to alphabets. Also learnt a 5th language when I was in college, so don't stress too much about language skills. The only weird , normal for my siblings, me and our friends, is that we tend to use several languages in one sentence! It drives our parents nuts!

It's just 1 scene - less than a minute. Didn't impact my husband's ( he's a Star Trek noob) enjoyment of the movie at all. Loved the movie ( not as much the previous one though), hated the 3d glasses , felt like I couldn't appreciate the "larger than life" action scenes. Wish they had more regular showings.

Not the German consulate, but the French one. Both and others have outsourced visa processing to VFS Global in Wafi mall. The process was pretty simple; make an appointment for submitting your application (on the VFS site), download and fill forms, attach all documents and photos. Head to Wafi. They don't allow tablets, phones, etc so leave them at home. Alternatively, they have a counter to check in stuff. Get there about 15 - 20 minutes before allotted time, as you need to go through security and then a queue to verify you have all the documents. They give you a token. Head to the relevant section. For he French visa, we had to submit biometric data - fingerprints, photos, etc.. Took us about 40 minutes total. HTH edited by tkoshy on 12/05/2013

When my brother visited, they flew with Pegasus, the flight was very basic, I think you had to buy drinks, snacks etc. also, no individual t.v's for each seat, which was a problem for the, because they had a six year old with them and she was bored. However, it was on time both ways. Thanks for the info:) I am going to fly on my own, so I am not too worried about the entertainment. Good thing is that you can take [b'>20kg baggage allowance[/b'>. How is that good ? it's less than Easy-Jet and they're a rubbish airline !! lol I suppose if you're on your own it doesn't really matter but I wouldn't consider flying so cheap with the family... Goodness - some of the comments smack of keeping up with the Jones'.... I am flying Pegasus with my children as money is tight - they have plenty to keep them amused during the flight. I saved an absolute fortune compared with BA, Emirates or Virgin. I know S. Gokcen airport well enough so in all, I am happy enough and so are the children. Agree with Bblue. We have flown several times with Pegasus within Turkey and once to Turkey. I have no idea how Ryan air is like but we like Pegasus. Seats are spacious (I am one of those fat, overflowing types! ), service is good, aircraft is relatively new, they are on time and efficient. The Sabiha airport itself is quite nice. We ate before travelling so no issues about food. Carried our own water ( bought it at airport, just a word of warning, the security are very strict about liquids, I've seen them confiscate stuff that other airlines would let slide),they didn't say anything. Had books, tablets, etc to keep us entertained. They are one of our fav low budget airline choices. Just make sure you pay for booking your seat, we almost always get the front ones, which can make a difference. HTH
