Hi MaiTai, I'm relocating to Dubai from Singapore - and you are going there! I think you may find the Expat Singapore Message Board helpful - but you do get trolls there. There is another forum - Singapore Expats which you can also check out. All the best for your move How funny! I keep peeking in the http://www.expatsingapore.com/forum/index.php/board,2.0.html but as I said I find that quite hostile compared to this!! Maybe coz it's not a women forum...or??? Don't know. what are the websites for the ones you mentioned? they all sound similar. You will love Dubai - I think. I am sad to leave but also excited about Singers. Agree wholeheartedly. Have to think twice about posting on the forums there.

you're all welcome. Hope you'll have a nice time. Sundevil, no need to be stressed. Pretty much every seat at the place has a good view of the stage. Don't know why people were being so rude. Lack of info, I think. Timtam, my thoughts exactly. but that would require money and effort which would be too much for organisers here. Found out last night that queueing early also didn't matter. People who arrived late just created another line for themselves. We actually saw a group of 6 arguing with a usher about the line being too long and he should just let them in. He refused, but they just stood there and ultimately pushed in. Loads of nice folk too, who just kept letting others in! Edited to add, separate queues for each zone. Platinum and royal have their own entrance. Gold and silver shared one, with 2 queues for silver and 1 for gold. All the entrances are grouped together, though. Make sure you have a printed copy of your ticket, they were strict about that. <em>edited by tkoshy on 07/02/2013</em>

We got there at 8.30 ( gates opened at 8) for a 10 pm show and there were huge queues already. Add to that well heeled queue jumpers ( my pet peeve! ) and poor organisation , I'd say get there before gates open. Huge lines for food - popcorn, crepes, potato chips, shawarma, samosas, etc - and loo's. Also towards the end, we heard ushers suggesting to people who were coming in towards the end, about 5 minutes before the show started, that seats were no longer available and maybe they'd like to sit on the steps!! Thankfully, nobody was insane enough to do that. However, the ushers themselves sat on the steps. We also found they locked all the doors to the venue once the show started - husband found out during the 20 minute intermission, when he nipped out to smoke. Oh, and they are confused about where people can actually smoke! getting into parking was smooth, leaving a pain - not organiser's fault, I will never stop being amazed at how impatient and mannerless a lot of people in Dubai are! Especially, people who look like they should know better. Seating is drop down seats for gold and silver classes. Royal and platinum have individual chairs. Quite strict about camera, I only managed these because an usher was distracted. Took them because of the lack of info available either from the organisers or the net about actual seating. Having said all that, we had a good time. The show was good and people genuinely enjoyed themselves. A lovely night out. edited because i'm having problems linking the images . edited by tkoshy on 07/02/2013 edited by tkoshy on 07/02/2013 edited by tkoshy on 07/02/2013 edited by tkoshy on 07/02/2013 <em>edited by tkoshy on 07/02/2013</em>

my main fear is we are super spoilt in India and Dubai, you can hire someone to clean your home, nanny, laundry, wash your car, do your nails, wax etc etc,. What I want to know Brits Abroad, if you have kids, how did you manage with the "do it yourself" lifestyle vs "get everything done for you"? I may sound horrible saying this, but I imagine a day of waking up at 5.30 am, dropping my baby off to daycare, after a long day at work, pick him up, come home, cook, clean, do the laundry, weekends probably cook for the week ahead. I forgot to mention DH would be traveling all week and only be home on weekends so the entire responsibility falls on me. Is it worth it? You will be super exhausted all the time. At least, that is the number one complaint I hear from my friends. With both partners working, household chores, kids, etc and no help/no family around, they are all very tired always. The ones in New York and New Jersey have long commute times - my SIL does 1 and half hour commute - and have little to non existent savings. The ones in Texas, Arizona, Seattle, North Carolina and Portland seem to have better quality lives - bigger, cheaper homes/ apartments, better schooling and healthcare, less taxes, etc. A lot of it would also depend on your ability to assimilate. The ones who seem to be doing better are the ones who have adopted a more "americanised" lifestyle. The ones whose lives are predominantly Indian - food, culture, lifestyles- are having a far tougher time. Indian produce in the US is expensive and not that readily available. If you don't have family/friends nearby, celebrating festivals, traditions becomes more difficult. Friends with kids are struggling with raising kids - maintaining the balance between traditional and new ideals, the parental expectations and styles are very different. Travelling for vacations would also be a problem - you only get 2 weeks in a year and travelling out of the Americas is very expensive. Friends travel home every 2 years and they dislike the trip. Is it long term move? That has to be factored into your decision also. If it's short term, I would be packing my bags right now. If not, consider the impact on your life and that of your child in the future. The biggest advantage, for me, is the personal freedoms and the lack of bias/prejudice that a person enjoys. Very few of my friends who moved from the ME will ever move/have moved back here.

Thank you soooo much, ladies. I've been looking at apartments/houses without knowing what the areas they are in like. I know that I should only make decisions after I visit the places, but it helps to have personal opinions to narrow things down. Every person we ask for a recommendation of a real estate agent says we should narrow down the area we want to live in, before they can give suggestions! Zoco, was looking at Coxtown and Fraser town. Do they have good international schools in the area? Don't have kids, but don't want to be faced with long drives 3 -4 years down the line. An auto would be enough to get me to MG Road and surrounds? Good parks, etc? Love the ex-Dubai expats reference. Was wondering how we would fare as former NRI's! When you mean older buildings, would you be able to tell me what I should look out for , in terms of maintenance issues, in these buildings? Gowdy, am looking at the areas you have mentioned. Visited HSR layout and Jayanagar the last time I went. Jayanagar is ok - loads of houses, not many apartments- but HSR is too far out for us. We were looking at properties in Bannarghatta road, Sarjapur Road, Harlur Road. I know I can't expect them to be green in the way central Bangalore is , but are these areas at least suitable for walking around? Thanks again ladies, the info has been very helpful. Hope I can ask you'll any doubts that I may have? Am off to research the places you'll have mentioned.

From Marina, get to the airport. Keep going till you see signs for Airport tunnel, Qusais, Al Twar. Follow the signs to enter the tunnel. Keep straight on this road ( Beirut street/D60) after exiting the tunnel. You will pass underneath a bridge and the metro line. After this, take the 2nd right and then 1st right. The Phillipines consulate will be on the left hand side of the road.

Try Goa Curries/Pind Ke Dhaba. It's a new one that has Goan food on the ground floor and Punjabi on the first. Great, comfortable decor and good food ( the food manages to taste authentic without the normal spice/heat levels that Indian food has) at reasonable prices. http://goo.gl/maps/ykdHD - in the map right next to Mezbaan Hyderabad. If you don't want to go that far, loads of restaurants opposite the small park, next to the shopping area. Calicut Paragon, Anjappar, Saravana Bhavan ( vegetarian only) - all south Indian. For Sri Lankan, try Chef Lanka ( next to calicut paragon). Like TOLB mentioned, Sind Pinjab has lovely food. As does Manvaar - a Rajasthani restaurant ( near the Fish Market in Karama).

Having a family member who works in fast food, who has worked at all the major chains in the UAE, we pretty much know where to eat and what not to order. McDonald's in the UAE is pretty much the only place he will order drinks with ice in them - he says that the operators here are the one of the best in terms of quality control in the world. The staff are pretty diligent about cleaning out machines in Mcdonald's - great training. Before ordering, look at the counter behind the staff - if there is precooked food there, make slight changes to your order, like adding extra cheese/sauce, changing type of cheese - cheddar instead of American, or a slice of tomato, etc. This ensures that staff have to make your food from scratch. Even if you don't, it's not cause for worry, because most places have holding times ( which is the company mandated time to hold a product so that it tastes fresh, has nothing to do with spoilage), which are 99% of the time followed. Beware of eating from places with slow turnover - if the restaurant is slipping in sales, then staff might be tempted to hold onto food past holding times. This is obvious, but we never order from places where there is no kitchen or some cooking apparatus in sight. Like the food outlets at Meyd*n - the food is cooked elsewhere and brought there. As for ingredients, there is a reason fast food is cheap. Fresh, nutritious produce that remains the same from source to table is expensive. You get what you pay for. Most produce is sourced from the region - the veggies, buns, etc. Chicken in KFC is also bought regionally. Meat at BK, Hardees and McDonalds is imported. Food safety and cleanliness is pretty high in the Gulf, compared to most developed countries. He never ever eats at fast food places in the US, Uk or Europe - he says, perversely, labour rights and legal issues in these countries, as well as mom & pop franchises, pretty much ensure that management in these places are powerless when it comes to employee conduct/behavior. Disclaimer: When I mean fast food places, I'm talking the major chains here - not the ones with 1-4 shops around the country. Bon appetit!

Pakistani bridal suits, you won't find at Jamal Abdul Nasser, only arabic dresses. Sahib in the cloth market behind sharjah cinema has Bridal Outfits, and there are lots of other shops in the same market....with lots of outfits that you will probably need. There are jewellery (artificial bridal sets) shops there as well with the most gorgeous 'kundan' jewellery.... for Pakistani/traditional bridal make up - your best options would be: Ghazala Mir(on facebook) - more 'Karachi' looking make-up Ghazala of Alle Nora - more 'Lahore' touch... (if you're from pakistan u'll understand) Personally I love both for different reasons... :) happy to explain/give you the contacts just drop me your email.... take care... What is the price range for bridal suits here, please? I'm looking for one too, actually wedding wear, and would appreciate some info on prices. Thank you.

DH bought gold coins 24k at the Gold Souk. We were told that reselling coins is a lot easier as they are more sought after. Hope so! This was last year though. We see it as a long term investment. We do this too, whenever the gold price goes down. We also use Captain America's idea when we have to go back home with a little extra! For gold biscuits and coins, they've started charging commission prices now .

Ordered a whole bunch of stuff from Lands End and had it delivered here by post. It arrived in 2 weeks ( as promised on the site), was packed well and just had to go pick up at Post Office. Had to pay customs though, because there is a rule that anything package whose invoice is above 270 usd has a customs tax levied. Shipping price was reasonable and even with shipping, clothes (quite a bit of heavy winter wear) were cheaper than the stuff available here. Love the quality of their clothes. Holds up very well to rough treatment. Very pretty designs. A tip - read the reviews of the product, in my case, I'm glad I did. Sizing can change depending on the cut of the dress/outfit. HTH Edited to add that as they ship direct to the UAE, they take tax off the bill. <em>edited by tkoshy on 07/05/2012</em>

I think the style of pants you are looking for, that is very much in vogue now, is called "Azaar". Most ladies get them made to measure - looks better than ready made ones. awesome ladies, I will try them, and thanks for links. So, do these green mangos that seem so incredibly popular as they are...do they ripen into what I would think was a 'proper' mango, or is this the best time to harvest and use? You're so lucky! I'm dying to pluck mangoes off a tree and eat them. Yes, let them be and pretty soon you will have nice yellow mangoes. If you have lots of rain in the next two weeks, the mangoes will taste watery and will rot faster. Otherwise, let them change color and pluck them ,depending on how sweet you want them. My DH likes them firm but sweet and I like them kinda mushy and really sweet, so he plucks them just as soon as they turn color and I wait for a 4- 5 days more. Of course, we test mangoes every day to see whether it has reached our preferred tastes! Don't let them fall to the ground, they bruise and rot faster. It's huge part of Keralite cuisine. Other than eating them raw ( there's an old wives tale, that pregnant women always crave for green mangoes!) with red chilly and salt, we use them in fish dishes, veggie dishes, pickles - several different types and as condiments/dips for rice/side dish. [url=http://blog.sigsiv.com/2007/04/green-mango-chutney.html'>Green mango chutney[/url'> - easy to make, delicious and tastes divine as a sandwich spread.

Uhm, Souq Naif is in Deira, and it's not just a textile souq. Easiest directions to textile souq, is follow the road down to Bur Juman, keep going onto Seef street ( the street that runs along the creek, the British, American and Saudi consulates are located there). Follow Seef street to the end, where it curves into a roundabout . Take the first exit - you will have the Bastakiya on your right. Right after, you will see the Dubai Museum on your right. There's a paid parking lot here, either park here or take the right , just before the museum. Follow the road to the end. At the junction, take a right and there's a paid parking lot just as soon as you take the right. The entrance to the textile souq is a coupla steps down the road. If you park near the Dubai Museum, walk towards the creek and there are small side entrances to the textile souq on the right. If you don't find parking anwhere there, keep going until you reach the end of the road, take a left at the junction that will take you to the main road. There's a Carrefour on the opposite side of the road where parking is available. HTH

We did this trip last Friday, from Qusais to Fujairah (near the R/A at Fujairah City centre) took us 45 minutes ( this includes a restroom break and 2 photo stops). We took Emirates Road to the National Paints R/A and then took the 1st exit which put us on Maleha Road. Kept on it , till we saw the sign for Fujairah ( Exit 47/road 84). Nice smooth road with little to no traffic and fast ( at the speed limit of 120 km/h). From Springs to Fujairah, you would have to add at least 25 - 30 minutes.

I used to have this problem, started when I did high intensity exercises without proper footwear. Are you wearing proper shoes with ankle support? I saw a physio who recommended I take it easy until my ankles healed and try again albeit with proper shoes. I am overweight with thin ankles, so that means a lot of pressure on them. I would suggest seeing a doctor or physio.

NO - they asked for opinions and this is my opinion, whether you agree with it or not. The consequences of not having insurance IF things go wrong can be horrific and people need to be aware. Uhm, just to be clear, the OP definitely did not ask for opinions on the status of her insurance cover. She was asking for recommendations/opinions on ante-natal care. Do you have opinions/recommendations on that? OP, I have no idea about Medcare, but my friend says get an antenatal package. She says visits to the doctor are dependent on each individual person..she went once a month and then every two weeks in her third trimester. HTH
