Thanks - i watched every episode until he left, then didn't bother. Hasn't been the same since he left :( She's married to him and was asked to come back because they were shorthanded. Gil is on a research project somewhere and there was an episode with him in it, albeit for a few minutes. I think he's due for a special appearance as the last episode ended with Sara getting a bouquet from GIl..

http://www.facebook.com/iranzamindubai?ref=ts Heard very good reviews from Iranians, so the food must be authentic. Out of curiosity , why are there colored eggs, garlic and fish bowl on the table set up for Nourouz? Also is that a bowl of chocolate custard on the top left of the pic (yum!)? Lovely movie..a wonderful cast, fast paced, well shot and directed. Vidya Balan was awesome. Climax didn't leave me wowed because it was very similar to an English movie ending, but DH who has not seen the said movie, said it surprised him. Well worth the ticket prices.

Anyway, as all of you do say, this is an open forum and if you are going to fly with the geese then if you dish it, you take it. We are talking about how we feel about spanking, period. Not saying Anna is not a good parent so lets not read anything into our opinions that are not there ok? So just like you, I am talking about how I feel about spanking. All I did was disagree with Summerdream based on personal experience. Nothing I said was "dishing it and taking it" either. I never said Annedxb was not a good parent. But when somebody quotes me and says that she finds it shocking, then I will reply to state my point. Am not arguing here, just said that the thread was supposed to be humorous ( now I'm confused) and now it's not.

This was supposed to be a nice thread - a mother relating something cute her child said. I found it funny. The only reason I posted what i did - from my own experience and those of my near and dear ones - is because the Op was forced to defend how she parents her child. There is a very clear difference between spanking and abuse, I cannot stress that enough( somebody posted a video on here about a teacher hitting children in school - that was not spanking, that was abuse). I was a very naughty child - my mother does the scolding, explaining, timeout methods and then as a last resort, uses spanking . I don't remember being spanked, these are her accounts of it. So like I said, just because I was spanked, doesn't mean that I grew up violent. Spanking is/was also culturally acceptable. Everyone I know has been spanked at one point in their life - and these stories are not related with horror or pain, rather amusing anecdotes about shared cultural upbringing. When Russell Peters says "Somebody gonna get a hurt real bad" and everybody in the audience laughs with him, what do you think they are laughing at? It's his tagline about being spanked!! And the audience laughs because they relate to it - and find it funny. Just because it is not acceptable to you culturally, does not make it wrong. OP, I am truly sorry for derailing your nice thread.

Sorry Annedxb, but you did post on a public forum and I couldn't help replying with this "When I was about twenty years old, I met an old pastor's wife who told me that when she was young and had her first child, she didn't believe in striking children, although spanking kids with a switch pulled from a tree was standard punishment at the time. "But one day when her son was four or five, he did something that she felt warranted a spanking--the first in his life. And she told him he w...ould have to go outside and find a switch for her to hit him with. The boy was gone a long time. And when he came back in, he was crying. "He said to her, 'Mama, I couldn't find a switch, but here's a rock you can throw at me.' All of the sudden a mother understood how the situation felt from the child's point of view: that if my mother wants to hurt me, it makes no difference what she does it with; she might as well do it with a stone. "The mother took the boy onto her lap and they both cried. Then she laid the rock on a shelf in the kitchen to remind herself forever: never violence. Because violence begins in the nursery--one can raise children into violence." ~From a peace prize acceptance speech given by Astrid Lindgren, author of Pippi Longstocking As lovely as that sounds. not every child who has been spanked associates it with violence. Coming from a background where corporal punishment was a given for being seriously naughty ( being naughty with dangerous consequences), I can say that no harm has come to my siblings or me. I can also vouch for friends and cousins. If the child understands what the spanking is for and that they are loved no matter what they do, IMO, it can be a good parenting tool. Annedxb, lol..

Has anyone done this? what would be the cheapest option? Thanks it depends what you're sending. I sent a package to cork recently (documents only) and it cost AED55 and reached in 2 days - that was by courier and it's cheap because our company has an account. In Empost i think the cheapest is 15AED and it takes 10 days, then faster and more expensive options. HTH Thank you, it's just a couple of books and I have time. Is Empost reliable? As in will the stuff get there? Thanks again

Keep it simple..that way you will enjoy each others company without too much pressure. book a table at a restaurant around the fountains at Dubai mall. Great weather, so a walk/watching fountains before or after dinner, followed by a movie at the cinema or at home cuddled on the couch? I find making elaborate plans just makes it forced. Maybe you could agree to meet at the place rather than go together - like a first date? Lol

"Magic teapot " Ohhhh, I remember these in London's Chinatown and never thought of it here! there is a lovely unlicensed Ravi's type place in Hounslow near Heathrow where we always used to go before a flight. You either took your own, or asked on of the waiters and they'd nip into the shop nextdoor! Someone was asking yesterday what business Dubai needed and now we've found it....Ravis with beer! Ahh, dubai used to have places like these, the reason the shack on the beach - Bu Qtair that Sami mentioned, became so famous was because they used to serve booze in plastic glasses. Great fun.

The second time I got a call and a reminder that my package had arrived and i was supposed to pick up. Both times were at the Post office in Deira. The websites I had bought from had shipping addresses that included my phone number along with postal address.

Varkala is a beautiful beach but not all that great for swimming. It's a sleepy town with not much going on in the evenings. IMO unless you are looking for complete relaxation, Goa would be much better. Also Laurelm's suggestion of the Ghats and Spice plantations is great. The weather will be so much better. Does anybody know if you pass your test in Dubai that you can legally drive in Qatar? as i know u can use it in all GCC country . Not necessarily correct I am afraid to say. I recently had to check for a colleague who has an Indian pasport but has a Kuwaiti licence and he will have to take another test here. True, but if you have a Dubai registered license, you can use that to drive and get a Kuwaiti driving license without going through a test there.

Another TV addict here.. I like the US version of Being Human - haven't watched the UK one. Saw the first episode of Alcatraz, need to see another one to know if I will like it or not. Currently catching up on Walking the Dead and Once Upon a Time (love this show). I'm also keeping up with a new series called The River - only 3 episodes out yet, but so far, it has been amazing - fast paced, edge of your seat kind. I would also recommend The American Horror Story - 1st season is over, so it's great for marathon viewing!

J. Also, can I remind you of something, In the USA employers are only legally required to give one week off per year. Esp for entry level jobs like housekeeping. I love some of these comments that are illuding to-' everybody deserves a month off' really? i wish the USA had these rules..... I'm sure that a lot of people in the UAE would trade vacation time if they were being paid US equivalent wages . Don't think people would be able to afford maids, if the US standard of minimum wage was set.

Too funny, guess it's not only my maid then !! Told her that my husband's company also expect's him to travel on the least expensive airline. She also had the cheek to say, but because she is going in August instead of December, the flight must be less expensive already. I really am considering ending the contract, I just cannot bear how ungrateful and cheeky she is turning out to be. I need to calm down, I am spitting fire at the moment. While I agree that she is being cheeky asking to go on Emirates, her only fault happens to be that she changed her vacation plans? Don't think you can blame her for tickets to Europe that you booked, because you needed her help while on vacation. You say she is very sweet and she must obviously be doing her job really well, or you wouldn't consider taking her with you on vacation. So you are basically getting worked up because your maid is throwing a bit of a sulk about having a cheaper airline....Right, I'll tell my husband and my friends who complain about the very same thing, that they're not allowed to have one, as after all, they should be "lucky" to have those flights.Everyone is entitled to a moan about sucky (in their opinion) work conditions, difference is your maid doesn't ever leave her workplace and God forbid, she discuss you with her peers...that would make her evil. You have the privilege of being the better person here.

Don't know anything about the company mentioned, but if they do a good job, then it's a nice price. I have been going around looking at different dealers for paint protection and good exterior waxing for our cars and prices range from 950 - 600 AED. Getting swirl marks out of paint needs a good technician and if the pictures in the ad are any indication, that's a good deäl.

Thanks for the link, tkoshy. Safa Park is not that far really but I don't have a car so only go to the Choitrams there if I happen to be in the area for something . Chappan Bhog sounds worth checking out (despite poor Time Out review). edited by Jadey on 07/02/2012 Ah, didn't realise you don't have a car. I'm not recommending the restaurant, have never eaten (?) there, but their sweets and the paneer was good. I never really pay attention to Timeout reviews anymore, I've learnt the hard way that the reviewer's view is very subjective. I tend to pay more attention to the comments below - especially to the more recent ones. :)

Loove mine. I have this type http://www.dyson.com/store/product.asp?product=DC23-TURBINEHEAD-US We've had it for 3 years now, bought from Carrefour. Don't remember the price. It's powerful, very easily maintained and the best bit, quite hardy - I can be careless while vacuuming. It's got scuff marks but then I think, that's my fault. It can be very noisy though, I'm sure my neighbours know everytime I vacuum!

Somewhere in the Emirates my sister in law is grinding her teeth... It drives her insane that Karama sells JC, she buys all of her things original from the stores and is furious when she has spent a fortune on something then sees someone walking down the street in a knock off as though they're rocking the real deal. Don' even get me started on Ralph Lauren... Can't see the problem SIL knows hers is genuine who cares what anyone else is carrying/wearing/thinking??? edited by angela on 31/01/2012 It's the ethics of it all thou...... if you wanna support crime and child labour to save a few quid; go ahead. Lol . Out of all the coincidences in the world, on our recent trip to China, we met an Indian guy in Hong Kong airport who was in the business of counterfeiting. He used to work as a salaried professional in HK, he quit and started up a factory in Guangzhou that produces fake goods. He now has 3 factories producing all manner of fake goods, told us that there were no children working for him - he said that the authorities regularily inspected his factories- and that the business was so profitable that there was no need to employ kids. His family lives in HK and he lives in Guangzhou and he shuttles between the two cities every weekend. I'm not arguing ethics, just saying that there's quite a bit of propaganda involved with counterfeiting. This article in the Telegraph provides a different perspective: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/retailandconsumer/7969335/Fake-goods-are-fine-says-EU-study.html Edited because I couldn't get it to link properly. <em>edited by tkoshy on 01/02/2012</em>
