Sorry for the late reply, had the flu. The "Sheikh colony" buildings are managed by Al Wasl now. I can't find any online mention of the flats for rent, but I've been told that the DDB has handed over management to Al Wasl. Try contacting them at 8009275. http://www.wasl.ae/htmlEng/wasl_pm.html The info on the flats were that they were going for 29,000 Aed for a 2 bed w/ac. While the location and the convenience is great, my friend says that the buildings are old and the maintenance reflects that. Having said that, the ones in Qusais have just been given a facelift in the past 3 months - cleaned out, restored and painted. I'm also seeing regular cleaning crews nowadays. I know that even if you can't flats now, you register with them and they will allot once they have one vacant. HTH

Has she tried the Dubai Development board buildings? I don't have the contact details but I'm told the "Sheikh colony" buildings in Qusais and Karama are cheap - around 20 -30,000 for w.a/c 2 beds. They also have other apartments throughout Dubai. You have to register and they allot accommodation as it becomes available.

You can do China on your own, if you plan ahead thoroughly. The planning ahead is necessary because language is a very big barrier. It's not just in asking for simple things like a spoon or fork but even the names of buidings, places, etc. So if you ask for a street by its English name, you will get confused looks because its Chinese name is very different ( and our attempt at pronouncing the chinese names elicited quite a few laughs). Also booking internal flights/train travel is difficult/not possible from outside china. We did a tour for 16 days that covered most of the major attractions in China - especially the terracota fellas at Xian lol. http://www.expatwoman.com/forum/messages.aspx?TopicID=162632 Beijing on your own is very doable - we did 2 days on our own there prior to the start of the tour. I had a couple of pages with English-Mandarin translations ( the word in English, how to pronounce it in English and its Mandarin equivalent) of the most commonly used words, phrases and the names of the places we wanted to go. That, a map of the city and a subway map is all you need for Beijing. Xian is also easy to navigate as everything to see is within the old part of the city ( the terracota warriors are a 40 minute drive out of the city). If I had a chance to do it over (with more time to plan, I got less than a month to plan the whole thing), I would not go on a tour because Dh and I are a little too independent for tour groups . What we would do instead, is hire a local guide for each place we wanted to visit - the Tripadvisor China forums have great recommendations for each city- who would be able to help us with bookings, transportation, etc. That way we would have the flexibilty of planning a vacation according to our needs. Having said that, the tour was the best holiday in terms of hassle/stress. You just turn up - they take care of everything else for you. I'm rambling on..:). Just ask if you need any more info.

What a great thread - I guess fireworks should be on there too? yes! fireworks tonight, creek area around 8pm? or is it 9pm? fab display last week, UAE colours, hearts etc. :) Fireworks every day at the Creek, on Al Seef street at 8.30 pm. There are 2 stages set up there, that have continuous dance performances by several different groups from 8 pm onwards ( this timing I'm not sure about as there was a performance going on when I got there at 8.20 pm). Lots of small stalls for shopping and a mini fairground. Similarily, Al Rigga street has two fairgrounds set up near Al Ghurair mall, with street performers, food and small stalls. Both areas are great for people-watching.

To be honest, YES, I was trying to buy a work visa. However, can I not file a complaint with the police & say I paid the money for agents services. Why I am saying so is because these guys were purpoting to be emplyment agents? Please can anyone assist me with this, I have one of the guy`s visa copy, can I take it to the police & say I paid him agency service money to get me a maid into the country. I lost AED18,500.00, its really divasting for me & my family, PLEASE HELP GUYS!!! As sorry as I am for your situation, the very fact that you tried to buy a work visa is the scammer's biggest strength. The police are not naive, they will realise immediately, whatever the excuse you give them, what the situation is and that could end badly for you. I feel bad for you, but unfortunately there is very little you can do. So sorry

Were you trying to buy a work visa? If so, that is illegal and you could land in trouble if you involve the police. If not, like Pomegranate says, get the cops involved, they may be able to trace them.

Thought I would just update this, in case anybody is looking for info. We did a land only tour with Chinaspree, this December and had a great time. There were kids as young as 6 on the trip. Hotels were 4 and 5 stars, the food great and the guides were informative, attentive and personable. They took care of everything. It was our first time on a tour and we were told by others travelling with us, who had been on tours before, that the one we were on was very well organised. I have no connection with this tour, they are based out of the US. Just a recommendation. http://www.chinaspree.com/index_us.aspx Edited to thank the ladies on EW who helped me with recommendations on clothes and shoes. It was freezing in China! Oh and if you want a cold place with a Christmassy atmosphere - China is a revelation! Everywhere place we went to had Xmas decorations, food, etc all trying to outdo each other. It was wonderful. edited by tkoshy on 17/01/2012 <em>edited by tkoshy on 17/01/2012</em>

I bought a Jaguar from Al Tayer with my credit card (I wanted the Skywards points!)....they were however going to charge me a HUGE sum for the privelege (about 500 AED I think). I made a huge fuss and the knocked that off the price of the car in order that the transaction could go ahead. Thanks Suze63 for your reply. We want points too! :) but are being told we can charge only 10,000 dhs to the card. May I ask when you bought your car?

To get to Naif proper, change over at Khalid bin Waleed ffrom the red to the green line and get down at Palm Deira station. Exit and take the pedestrian overpass and you are in Naif area proper. If you get down at Baniyas, you'll have to walk towards the sea,to get to Naif.

I would have agreed with most posters here, but I do know of a western educated expat ( from a western country) who is just out of uni and who works for about the same here ( he's in marketing). He came over on vacation and liked what he saw, looked around for work and then when he found it, moved here.He shares a villa in Barsha with friends ( who he met here or over the internet), uses public transport and generally, seems to find cheap ways to have fun. One thing though, he is very outgoing - seems to be able to make friends easily. He loves travelling and is using Dubai as a base to explore the region. So I guess 8000 Aed would be ok to live on here, if you find the right sort of person. I think a lot of people, including me, underestimate young people's ability to adapt/survive on very little.

Couldn't ode to save my life! But for the OP - we have been looking at snow/rain boots/shoes for the past month! The North Face and Timberland have some good boots/shoes that are light, waterproof ( Goretex branded) and have good grip ( Vibram branded). The ones specifically for snow had insulation and went up to the ankles. Both brands are available at Sun and Sand sports who are having a sale right now, uptill the 29th. The sale seems to be genuine - we have been watching prices for a month and a half , prices have gone down from 500 - 600 AED to 350 - 400 AED ( which would make them equivalent to US prices). Merrell also have some great shoes at reasonable prices - available at Decathlon in MCC. They are cheaper than TNF and Timberland, but so many good reviews on the shoes/boots. HTH

The warehouse sale, the one held in Jumeirah? I thought it was in October too, so wondering if I had missed it. IAMVP, I am green with envy - books are the only things I obsess about. Lucky you! So glad I am not alone. The other day my son was being a bit rough with one of his books and I snapped and said "heyyyy that's my hermes bag and bvlgari sunglasses!" I am scared to admit how much I have spent on books for them. Obsessed for sure:) ROFL, thats exactly how I am about books!! All my books look as good as the day I bought them, even after reading them over and over again.I'm also the weird one in the book store who looks to see I'm alone and then stands there sniffing the "new book" smell!!

Which company is this?? Seriously, the customer service level in this country is unbelievable! I honestly fail to be surprised any more here! I have found I can buy groceries from Choithram in the Greens without most staff speaking a single word to me! (don't go there any more!) Er... Maybe the staff aren't in the mood to talk? I usually go through my carrefour/lulu transactions without convos, either! It's called Customer Service and it means I and others don't come to your store any more! I don't understand this..you don't shop at a store because the staff don't chat/acknowledge you? Or are you saying that when you ask them questions about the products on sale, they don't answer?

tkoshy...where is the shop in Cochin? I may fly there soon -but on a tight schedule , so i would like to zip in , buy and zip out rather than wasting time searching for the shop NNair has posted the shops that are easily accessible in Ernakulam ( there is one in Fort Kochi too). The Bay pride shop has older stock but better variety. The shop in the departure area of Cochin airport ( about halfway down the terminal, next to a bookshop, I think) has newer designs but not a lot of stock. If you can get to Marine Drive, shop at the Baypride place. I bought my last two bags from the airport though..nothing like last minute shopping at 7 am!!

I don't think there is an equivalent of " you're welcome" in the subcontinent. The most if is a smile/nod if your a regular/fav customer and even then, if you're a guy. Most men from Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, etc are taught to not engage in eye contact with women. I would think that in this region it is in their best interest to maintain that detachment. I get very surprised/shocked reactions from educated men from the region when I hold my hand out for a handshake! So I don't expect a reaction when I say Thank you. Can someone fill me in as to why we are talking about the non-existant "you're welcomes"? On my post about the tip, I just said I never got a "thank you" - either someone deleted a post or I'm going koo-koo - (or both, actually.. [url=http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php'>[img'>http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-signs002.gif[/img'>[/url'>...LOL) LOl..I'm just talking about the reason for the general lack of reaction/gratitude...no thank yous, no smiles, no nods from all the taxi drivers, the counter staff, the staff at supermarkets, etc. For all you know, they could just be considering your tip as payment for service rendered - so no need for thank yous?

I've said thank yous in Hindi and Malayalam and got responses, so that may be the problem. <em>edited by tkoshy on 22/11/2011</em>

Stovetop... where did u get Hidesign bags here? I love their designs and very good quality too.... but i could never find them in Dubai. Is it only available via online shopping ? They used to be available at Jashanmal till last year. But I've always bought mine from India. Really convenient (and tempting) that they have tied up with some airports, so I buy them when I fly out :) Love their travel wallets and keychains too. Love, love Hidesign. Have a few bags and a clutch that are beautifully made and well designed. Hubby has 3 leather briefcases and a folder that he loves to bits. They are really cheap in India (not by Indian standards though). There was a store in DFC but it was in a bad location and never advertised. Buy them in Delhi or Cochin. And here I was thinking nobody knew about them!!

It means that the UAE economy is growing at a very good pace (and much better than the UK and Australia) :) In fact the forecast for 2011's final GDP figures has been revised as they are even doing much better than predicted. http://www.arabianbusiness.com/uae-s-2011-economic-growth-forecast-raised-by-bmi-413037.html :) PS, nobody can tell you what to do as it would depend on your own personal circumstances, I was just posting this re your statement of losing jobs etc. In fact most people would agree, roads are incredibly busier than they were even one year ago (and definitely two!); schools are packed, supermarket car parks are busy - and in most industries things are back to what they were (before the boom and not during it). edited by baked mushrooms on 17/11/2011 Is this the same Dubai that I live in? Agree with Baked Mushrooms ( welcome back btw), that there seems to be more people coming in, business is actually getting better. Husbands company is showing quarter to quarter rise in sales and profits this year. But unlike BM's view that industries are doing better, Dh's company research is saying that Dubai is seeing a huge influx of refugees - and refugees with real money to boot. Also larger numbers are arriving from UK, Italy, Greece,USA and Australia. The whole Emirates Hills area and AR area sales are back up. Don't know if that will affect real estate sales, the only people who might buy are the ones who are fleeing with money right now - and they might be going for villas rather than apartments.

Don't have any experience moving to another as an expat adult, but I was an expat brat, who went home to study and found myself surrounded by locals, who had nothing in common with me, other than heritage. Not the same for you, but what worked for me, was finding things to do that the locals are interested in ( even if it was boring ),volunteer, putting yourself out there, and being patient - letting people come up to me and include me after I had demonstrated that I was friendly and willing to mingle. Maybe it is intimidating for other mums that you have so much expat experience? I know other people used to avoid me because they thought that. If you're not a Brit, maybe use that to your advantage? Sorry you're going through such a tough time, hang in there and pretty sure you'll make friends soon. After all, you can always whinge about it here!;)

Appletiser, that is really scary. Yes, a very fast moving fire. maybe because there was a lot of wind coupled by the fact that the exterior had a modern plastic- derived facade? Thankfully the fire jumped only to apartments above and not to either side ( had glass on either side, maybe that helped?) The amazing thing was that there were people still in the building. We watched as 2 men on the 31st floor stood on their balcony waiting for help while the fire raged on next door. Wonder why they didn't leave? You should consider an extinguisher in your home. Bbcb, the thought did cross our mind - such a tall building , no sprinkler system? They had a fire alarm system, it was blaring when we got there. But so many of them are faulty or hypersensitive, always going off.. So how do we know if the sprinklers work? What happens in an electrical fire? Searching through EW for home insurance recommendations now...

No wonder there are so many stressed out expats in Dubai. So many of you can't even handle how the general population of the region uses the English language? A language is only ever abused, IMO, when native speakers don't use it properly. This thread is just as bad as others like it that have been done before, as it is descending into picking out words that are used colloquially by second and third language users. Sat on my hands before when such threads appeared, not doing it anymore. The thread is about "what word annoys you"....not necessarily "in Dubai".....;) Go through the thread again. ahnn..no? :P :)

Got my license a year back. Went to Emirates driving school, had a female instructor who was brilliant ( and 7 months pregnant!!) and took 40 driving classes ( each class is 1/2 hour each, so I had 1 hour classes 3 times a week for a month, at timings that suited me). Also had theory lessons to do, which they had a timetable for and which I did at my leisure. The whole process from application to driving license took 1 and a half months ( The entire thing happened during Ramadan). Was learning to drive for the first time, so was very, very nervous - not to mention totally psyched out by everyone who knew I was taking the classes. Not one single person had a positive thing to say about the experience. The classes went well, but when it came to the tests, I was totally terrified. I failed my first test, because I did some pretty dumb things as result of being tense. Another woman in the car who was doing it for the first time, passed though ( she drove well). Failed my second test too, because I was even more worried. Took a weeks break, a few more classes, didn't tell anybody or talk to anybody about the test, couldn't have cared less if I passed, and I passed. I think most of the time people fail the exam because they are doing something wrong. They grade you on so many points - like lane changing, if you get it wrong, not only do they mark you for that, you also get marked for poor judgement, poor timing, recklessness, etc. Get a certain number of points and you fail. The examiners (all three times female in my case) are very polite and if you wait to see them after the test, will even explain where you went wrong. The lessons themselves were not scary, but other people's stories were and the the nut jobs on the road who disregard learning vehicles. All I can say, is demand female instructors and examiners, don't be afraid to change instructors if they are not teaching/helping you right and be confident. Even if you fail, so what? Just practise some more , become better and you will pass the test. Best of luck
