If you are already fit/ at least a little bit physical, the Wii will do nothing for you. However if you are like me, a total lazy a$$, the wii fit is wonderful. I'm however finding that I spend a lot of time nowadays playing video games ( Mario Kart and Zelda) than the Wii fit. So like anything to do with exercise, you will need the motivation. If you just want to play video games, get the XBox.

Apologiesin advance for the hijack, but a question for Singapore Sling. Do you pay taxes there as an expat? If so, how much? We were looking at moving and got very confusing replies. Thanks

The directions are correct but a warning about Lucky's. Their after sales service is non existent. We bought a chest of drawers from there and every drawer expanded when it got home, so much that none of them would shut at all. Called them numerous times, even offered to go pick up and dropp off their carpenters, but had no response whatsoever. Ultimately got building maintenance to do repair for us. Directions to Pinky's - Directions are similar till you get to the 2nd roundabout. While a left at this will take you to Lucky's, keep going straight ( stay in the left lane) till the next signal. Take a left at the signal and keep going till you pass Skyline college on your right. Take the next u-turn after that and come back. Now approximately opposite to skyline college, there will be a Cooperative Tyre Trading on the right. Take the exit right before this. At the Junction after, take a left ( it's unpaved, unlit road now) and then take the first right. Pinky's is on your right further down the lane. Easier than above directions - Take the Airport Tunnel, and keep going straight towards sharjah. You will be on Beirut street. Keep going straight, will pass quite a few signals, till a bridge passes overhead. Take the second exit after the bridge , take a left and then a right to get to Pinky's. The road is unpaved and not lit. To get to Lucky's, get back to the road you were on ( Beirut street), follow road til next signal, take right, keep going till you get to roundabout and take right here. Go to the end of the street, uturn and first right. Lucky's is on the left. Pinky's is more organised and has more painted furniture, more cupboards, etc than Luckys. Luckys has the heavier, more metal worked furniture.

Air Arabia should be the cheapest. But they fly out of Sharjah though. Otherwise try Turkish Airlines, they fly to Morocco with a stopover in Istanbul. Qatar Airways is also an option with a stopover in Doha. Out of the bigger airlines, Qatar was the cheapest when I last looked. HTH

If coming from Jumeirah, to get to the Gold souk, take the Shindagha tunnel ( stay in the right lane and take the first exit after you come out. Plenty of parking there. If you can't find any parking there, try the inner streets. There is usually paid parking there. Ask for directions. The Spice souq is walkable from there. Ask as you go along ( alternatively, follow Old Baladiya Street to the end and the Spice souk should be to your right). Take an Abra across the creek to get to the Textile souk. Walk along the creek to get to the Heritage area, Sheikh Saeed house, etc Don't know if this is possible with kids. Might be a little chaotic but doable. Sorry if it is confusing. <em>edited by tkoshy on 17/10/2011</em>

Try these places: http://www.bb-belgravia.com/ - Good location, ok reviews. We were considering this for our vacation. They seem to have rooms available over Xmas. http://www.themainhouse.co.uk/index.htm#tac - They only have 3 rooms and their cancellation policy is a nightmare. But it's in Notting Hill! http://www.ibishotel.com/gb/booking/hotels-list.shtml - have stayed in 3 Ibis hotels and found them all very good value. Small rooms, but clean and functional. http://www.millenniumhotels.co.uk/millenniumkensington/index.html - our hotel of choice, price is above the 100 GBP mark but the location is unbeatable. It's a renovated hotel so has creaky wooden floors. I loved it! There is the Easyhotel franchise. I'm just adding that as a far fetched option. Also try university accommodation. Have had a few friends stay at Imperial College student accommodation in Beit Hall (?) in the summer, when colleges are on holiday/break. Best of luck. HTH

I'm glad I bought 8 cans, because when I went back it was all gone, and my inquiries were met with blank stares-- sigh Aleta, I have noticed it at the Choithram's at Amwaj in JBR this week so I am sure if you check other branches they may have it too. Find Diet A&W root beer quite often in Lulu

Diwali here is generally a more private affair - you won't find any big Diwali bash in Dubai. Usually people visit their family and friends, exchange sweets and light diyas (tea light candles). If you want to get a "feel of Diwali", the best place to visit would be Bur Dubai. If go to the gold shops on Dhanteras in Bur Dubai, you'll find loads of people buying gold :) And also, check out the lovely lights on all the buildings' windows in Bur Dubai - it's just lovely to walk around there and see all that. I think the temple also would be quite crowded (never been there on Diwali, so don't know). Fire crackers are illegal in Dubai, although you'll hear the odd cracker going off on Diwali. There's a Diwali exhibition in Discovery gardens on October 22nd (11am to 5pm) for kids and parents. The kids can get henna, paint diyas, etc. and for the parents, there will be a bazaar to buy Diwali goodies. edited by terrible_twos on 16/10/2011 Would you have any further details on this please? Missed the Zaabeel park one. Thanks

No particular etiquette for parties, turn up , eat, drink and have fun. Everyone will be dressed to the nines.:) Take a gift with you - Indian sweets ( Available at most Indian veg. restaurants (Chappan Bhog, Puranmal,Gazebo, Kamat) or even at Lulu - ask for a mixture of sweets, they come by weight )or dry fruits/nuts combo, wrapped well. If they have kids, something for them instead? Don't think they will expect you in a sari, it will be highly uncomfortable if it is your first time. Try a flashy salwar kameez or even a sparkly long tunic over jeans. Fabindia in Jumeirah , Meena Bazaar in Bur Dubai, Lulu ( your best bet at not getting ripped off) are the places to look. Dress up - half the fun in Diwali is that everyone gets new clothes and gets all glammed up. I'm all excited for you!! Happy Diwali.:)

Considering that they specialise in buffets, the food is good and the price is very reasonable ( I hear that the Lamcy plaza one is cheaper). Vegetarians don't have too many options ( compared to non veggies), just a few dishes , salads and side dishes. The focus is on Afghani/Pakistani/NWest Frontier cooking...Less than 80 Dhs/person? I think. I liked it and if we could brave the nightmare that is the Walk, then we would come often. The Walk was indeed a nightmare this evening. Also a few colourful and fruity characters hanging about My sympathies. Dh and I always think how ironic it is that people pay so much money to rent/buy in JBR and it turns into a zoo every night.

Thanks Pinks and Marmarina. My problem happens to be that the laptops that I'm looking at here in Dubai are all 1366 x 768. No higher resolution available. A friend has been kind enough to bring me one with the higher specs from US. So wondering whether to put him through the hassle or just buy it here. Am upgrading after 8 years so pretty much want to avoid the scenario that Pinks posted about.. Thanks ladies

I need help in deciding which display resolution to go for in a laptop. All other specs considered, I have a choice between 1366 x 768 and a 1920 x 1080 displays. I primarily use the laptop for browsing ( a lot of it) and word processing. A little bit of movie watching and photo editing. Does the resolution make a huge difference? I will be using the laptop for at least 5 years. I would also love to hear any personal experiences with a Dell XPS 15z or a HP DV6. Thanks

In your mind £60 K may not be large but to the majority of UK employees it is and more than enough to run a family of four off. As there are two young children there will be tax breaks as well. Cost of living is higher in Dubai, end of. Re job security, losing your job in the UK is far safer situation to be in than here, or are you to disagree with that as well? Just out of curiosity , do expats in the UK, as the OP is, get benefits/help if they lose their job? Are they not on work visas which will be revoked once they lose their job? Not being disagreeable, just asking.

Generalizations exist for a reason and as much as we hate to admit it there is usually more truth to them than not, otherwise they wouldn't be used. Since they are generalizations it also means we shouldn't take them too personally. God knows I've been on the receiving end of many because of my nationality, the fact that I'm a woman, the fact that I have a family and so on. If you got the impression I am American you were wrong, I am not, and any comment I made was as a result of my broad experience working in many geographies and with many nationalities. Apologies on assuming you were American. My mistake. I agree with what you've written about generalizations. But the problem happens when people judge you based on them. You have been at the receiving end of such behavior, so then why perpetuate it? Why say there is some truth in generalizations, and therefore they can be used, when it is convenient to you but be hurt when others do the same to you?

Perhaps the local economy wouldn't be so bad if so many expats didn't export 90% of their salaries, bought more stuff locally rather than shop 'n' ship and didn't use quite so many illegal (and unlicensed) vendors..... maybe then there would be more help available for so many of the disadvantaged locals (and their are many) Just saying..... Have to disagree. DH works for the fast food industry and even after 13 plus years here, he's still astounded at the profit mentality here. Why would you buy stuff locally when you know you're paying over several times the cost of what it does back home ( this is including the cost of shipping it here and overheads)? The costs of most things in the country reflect not only the price of running a business here but also the idea that year on year annual profits must be in the high double digits. Most of the malls would be empty here if it were not for the presence of a few big companies that have a huge portfolio of brands with them. I know that fast food restaurant in a prominent mall pays about 1 million dhs/annum as rental. Do you know how many sales a day they have to make to be able to pay that and still make a profit? Most expats I know would be happy to spend here. But nobody likes the feeling they are being cheated.Besides the UAE offers no guarantees whatsoever for its expat population so on what basis would expats hold money or even invest here?

There was this Tata Head who complained about British workers being inefficient because they wanted to leave at 6 pm and didnt like to come on weekends. He praised his Indian staff for staying till midnight if necessary I just read that the Indian PM, Manmohan Singh took 1 holiday in 40 years with his family simply because he is a workaholic, IMO That is nothing to be proud of That comment by Ratan Tata was taken out of context. Perpetuating it to solidify your argument is very, very poor form. He was talking about management in the the British companies that he had bought out. He had nothing but praise for the workers in the company. He was talking about the behavior of upper management when their companies are in crisis. As for Manmohan Singh, he is just like others in his generation. Lots of people like him around (Ratan Tata also), including my family, and we see nothing wrong in it. Have you read anything else about him, or just chose to quote something offhand about him, that you did not look into further but used because it seemed to justify your assumption? He has a happy family, with well adjusted, successful adult kids . He may work long hours but so does most of his generation, which includes my parents. As for the Tata head's pride in his local workforce, IMHO they are, generally speaking, (and I realize this is a broad generalization that is unfair for many others) by far the most inneficient and slow workforce I have experienced in my life. If you have to work 18 hours a day to do the work someone else might have done in 8 that does not make you a great employee. Massive generalisation. In fact so massive, that you should not have posted that at all. After all you wouldn't like it if I posted generalizations of Americans based on my contact with them.

Not sure if the company wants you to sell it here but if you have a US mailing address or know someone who does and will let you use theirs, then it wouldn't be as difficult and certainly very possible. If anyone needs a us address, my sister will receive and remail for you. it's her very small business! Guiness, would your sister be able to hold stuff for 3-4 days before remailing? Thanks

Agree with what Sugarbeach posted, as incredibly frustrated and helpless as that advice could make you. It seems the company is cunning enough to keep within the law by getting timesheets signed, so legally you will not have evidence to back you up. As mentioned before, colleagues who are supportive now may backtrack later when the actual confrontation has to take place. They could make your husband's work atmosphere unbearable if they find out you are contemplating legal action, refusing to sign timesheets, etc. Maybe privately speaking to someone in charge ( a little wining (sp?)and dining/present perhaps to sweeten the deal) about getting some time off. While that might seem unfair, I find in this region, a little flattery, a little praise, a little bit of smooth talking gets more work done than getting angry. Best of luck in your husband finding a better job.

You haven't mentioned which place you're taking lessons at, but almost all the driving schools here have female only sections. The instructors as well as the RTA examiners are female. I was also told that I could request an instructor who spoke my language ( the driving school I went to actually had instructors who would teach you in 5 languages!) as well ask for an examiner who spoke English ( not that my examiner spoke much - just left, right, u-turn). So call and ask the school. Try and get a timing as early in the morning as possible, that way, less traffic and the examiners are not as stressed out as they are by midday.I took the test 2 times before I passed, so chin up. Better luck next time.

Ok, so starting at 7 and finishing at 8 or 9pm is the norm, then the long journey from Abu Dhabi to Dubai (another 1.5 hours) - us as a family will change our working strategy and leave Dubai when we can afford to. 12-14 hours a day and only paid for 8! Speaks for itself even though some of you think its the norm, it wont be for everybody. There is definitely more to life than living and working in Dubai! Why not move to Abu Dhabi to make it easier for him and your family?

And I'm not even talking solely about expat kids - how come there are no Arabic-language private schools geared towards Emirati and other Gulf or Arab children? edited by guinness on 17/09/2011 Because the people of this country, like so many other developing countries around the world, including mine, have this notion that their languages are second class at best? That to get ahead in life, you need to have English. The countries you mention have never been colonised? So no real history of them being told that their language is inferior. I would have to disagree on the Chinese though, based on what DH says. His Chinese colleagues have their kids in English medium schools ( and they say that the competition to get into these schools is tough) so that they are fluent. Kinda what you were asking about but in reverse.

I know you said you can't leave, but Kerala? Catch a flight to Mangalore and be in Kasargode or Wayand in Kerala. Non touristy tropical mountains there. Fly to Cochin and head straight for Munnar. Flights to Kerala are also very convenient timing wise, as you can leave after work and be back in the morning on a working day with plenty of time to get to work. Otherwise, Salalah would be closest option to the tropics. How about Bcharre in Lebanon - not the tropics but mountainous.

Isn't there a school like this in Dubai? A school that teaches in Arabic, but has interesting, forward-thinking teaching? A school where my kids could feel like they are really living overseas? With all the private schools here in Dubai, how come not a single one is taught in Arabic? http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/18/magazine/my-familys-experiment-in-extreme-schooling.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1 And mods, if you read this far, this isn't a schools and nursery question, but more an overall philosophy of Dubai question, so please leave it where you found it! I'll answer one question as to why there are no arabic language schools for expat kids - parents don't want them/there's no market for them. Most expats would be pleased if their kids picked up another language but not at the expense of English (as a language). It would affect kid's chances at Uni abroad. As for the interesting, forward thinking part - I went to an Indian school in Kuwait. I would like to think that by the very nature of the school - all religions, different languages, different castes ( though I was not aware of castes in school), I have a broader view of life. I suppose it is the same here - kids mingling with other nationalities, other religions, other languages, makes them understand and accept differences, develop a way of thinking that is different to back home, make for interesting individuals.

Mannaland, on Al Mina Road near Diyafah street. I'm assuming it's authentic as whenever we've been there, there are a lot of Koreans eating there. They're also like a B&B, I think, lots of tour groups stay somewhere near there and use their restaurant as a base to eat from. Prices are reasonable, lots of starters and they accommodate our requests with regard to food. They only have a couple of cabins, the rest is open plan. Love their food. Ph#04-3451300

that remind me of a word I heard it many moons ago, me and DH went to rugby 7's, after the party after the finals, we got into our car, drove, then been stopped by the security, asking us to take an injured woman with broken leg, she and her other 2 friends, were way beyond drunk, It was dark, so the security did not see me, and he was from DH side, telling him this, we didn't want to involve, we offered to call ambulance for her, then I remember the man saying: they are European like you sir! then I opened the inside light, so he can see that I am no european or white! he just shut up! sure DH took them with us, but I was boiling, so europeans only deserve to be helped and none just leave them? by the way he was an arab man, not a local, I will never ever forget this words. never forget the looks to me and DH, when there were no children, every body try to ignore my presence, as I am not even equal to be his GF, then the shocked looks when any one see me pregnant walking with him. Irony? considering your views on the less fortunate in life.

PS: the majority of questions you've asked on this board are about setting up a nursery school? edited by tkoshy on 07/09/2011 Thanks Tkoshy for following me so well!!! Well, I do have a son and looking for a good childcare as I am planning to start work soon!!! Clear??? Following you so well!! But why would I? Are you someone famous or someone I know? You wish. I was only on this thread to post advice for which I would be, without a doubt, flamed. I was going to suggest that you check the place out and if you are ready to deal with the realities and legality of the place, then to go ahead. Encouraging anything illegal on this board can make for a bad day and so I wanted to make sure from your previous posts ( which BTW, can be accessed by clicking on a poster's name and number of posts, no need to follow them at all!!) whether you were struggling financially. I was surprised to see that the majority of your limited number of posts were all about nurseries. Which begs the question. Clear?!

Maracas where exactly is the ID office in Rashidiya ? TIA Just wanted to add my experience. Did it just before Eid. Typed out application and got dates for fingerprinting ( in Barsha) that were during the Eid public holidays. So went to the Rashidiya centre to see if they could change dates. Female section was absolutely empty and I was told that I could do it then itself. The whole process took 5 minutes. DH, however had to wait till today to do his, as there was a huge queue for men. The official there told us that if there's no rush, they will disregard the dates and just process your application for you. Directions:If you're coming from the Emirates road, take the Airport Road and when you reach the VIP Airport traffic junction, take a left turn. Take a u-turn at the roundabout and come back almost to the end of the road. Take the right onto road that runs behind the metro station. At the 2nd roundabout, take the right and then the first left. Continue on the road till the end ( the road will curve to the right ). You can see the centre from here. HTH OOps took too long to type!!! <em>edited by tkoshy on 04/09/2011</em>
