Would appreciate any recommendation for GCSE tutoring for Math, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. Previous posts were years ago and if anyone's had recent good and positive experiences with your children, I would be very grateful if you could share. Much thanks!

My landlady has already had the cheek to warn us that she'll probably be raising the rent at our 1st year renewal next year in light of the almost sure win for Dubai and the foreseen up in real estate (amongst everything else) when Dubai wins. Talk about counting your eggs! How any expat who has personally experienced or struggled to live with skyrocketing costs of housing & schooling these last 2 years in Dubai can find this a reason to celebrate is beyond me. The infamous greedy Dubai landlords are already rubbing their hands in anticipation. :(

This thread is so helpful! I have been struggling for a while now trying to find books that would encourage my 13yr old to read. She used to read a lot when she was younger but now that she's a teen finds it difficult finding books to suit. Since she's not at all into the vampire, bloodsuckers, fantasy genre that seems to be gracing the shelfs these days, its quite a challenge finding a book. Please do keep recommending books - I've just got The Book Thief and Malorie B book for her on her Kindle :)

toots wrote: Would appreciate the list too! 3 kids here during Ramadan is torture. Just to clarify ladies, I WAS not referring to Ramadan as torture. I was referring to having 3 young kids cooped up at home in this heat, without the option of going out in daylight seeing that there is no food or drink available/legally consumable - as torture. That torture is personal, for ME as a mom. Might not be for you, but for me yes, cooped up in a house with 3 bored children for weeks is torture. Sure, nothing compared to watching your starving child die of course, but what the hey, indulge me the melodrama. Do appreciate the little lectures on meaning of Ramadan but highly unnecessary as I grew up & am a citizen of a Muslim country. Did not mean mean any disrespect or to offend, I just wanted to know where I could go during the day. Perhaps I should have worded it differently but TBH didn't realise there were so many on here so ready to pounce and bite. Apologies and for those who celebrate, have a Blessed Ramadan.

I just used Supreme recently for our move and can safely say I shall never ever use them again. It was down to Orbit and Supreme with their quotes but I decided to go with Supreme since it was well recommended here on EW. I have to say, that is no longer the case. The move was quick and good but the guy running the show was most annoying and not at all obliging. They even tried to postpone the carpentry work even though it was all agreed to be finished in 1 DAY. They eventually finished it all in 1 day but just left a bad taste after. And they also have this ridiculous clause where you have to return every single box and its 10dh/ box if you don't. But on that same note, it took them 11 days to pick up the empty boxes. Just don't use them.

Toots - Does that mean that the cooling bills are higher in Jumeirah Islands because they have their own cooling plant? Most definately. Stupid prices. You pay Emcool on top of regular Dewa (water+electricity). I'm always curious as to how people continue to pay these ridiculous bills and still manage to school the kids & feed their families. Some people must still get those super duper packages that we thought was a long lost myth :) Personally, I'm looking to get away from the Meadows as we have had a 3-5k Dewa bill (unjustified) continuously for this year. Had enough. Cautious now about where we rent next. It is all too stressful. edited by toots on 03/05/2013

Hiya, not too sure but no one I know living in Jumeirah Park have ever paid Emcool. Just the normal Dewa bills. From what I heard unlike Jumeirah Islands, the cooling plants for Jumeirah Park were never built due to the downturn. Am grateful for that fact as we're considering renting there as well!

Hi Tim Tam! We just finished a stint in India/ Mumbai a year ago so my experience is fairly recent. You are so right in saying that not everyone has the luxury of having dream jobs in dream locations, in the real world, we go where the work is and this is also what took us very reluctantly to India. I have great memories of our time there, made lifelong friends and loved India. India is initially very hard work though. Most everything the other posters said about it is very true. Every expat I knew there, found it hard. Some stayed some gave up and went home but MOSt after the first year found it doable. With a few planned short holidays to take you out for a quick breath of fresh air, and there are plenty of nearby holiday destinations, a good group of friends to occupy your days whilst the kids are away. Personally, we as a family decided to accept life in India as it was and not compare it to what we were used to. We had a great house, maids, driver, cook and most importantly, a job! What really did we have to complain about? After the initial few months of the shock to all your senses, we were all quite used to it all. Kids and I were complaining less and less with each passing month :) Expat communities are very tight and keep you busy especially if you belong to the ASB community. My 3 kids had been in the British system all their life and found ASB (US system) fantastic. If I'm not mistaken, ASB is also one of the few schools in all India that offer IB. And YES, its VERY very expensive. Cost of living is very high there overall. Shopping is great!! Also, Yes, its very dirty and extreme poverty is everywhere but poverty is a very real fact of life. Just because we are shielded from it in Dubai and most of the western world, doesn't mean its not there! I would not go back for another stint but I am very glad that my children and I had that amazing 2 years to experience India, the bad and good. Opened their rose tinted eyes up to the real world and made us all appreciative of the little things in life. So if the offer is really good, do it. India is truly incredible, wish I had had more time to have seen more of it. edited by toots on 10/03/2013
