Thanks for that, I just checked the Metrash2 website. Is this only an app then? What is the "smart ID card"? Is it just the normal ID card? Do I need to do anything from Doha before I go abroad and realise there was something I should have done to activate my account? And regarding the multiple exit permit, JillMV - your nanny has been able to leave the country without any trouble? May I ask where she's from? Thanks a lot again.

So my husband is changing job and we have to take care of our own insurance company. What do you recommend? I've tried a couple - Qatar Insurance Company and Daman - but I am now looking for something more international so I can get treated in Europe if anything happens without having to spend three days doing paperwork. The only one I can think of is Axa. What do you ladies use?

Hi, Registrations for Bonaparte opened last Sunday. French nationals are at the top of the list unfortunately. Then they look at other nationalities, obviously those who have been in the French system are more likely to get in. But I second tia75, you should register asap. There is more and more "demandes" and the school is not getting bigger! I don't think it's that hard to get in Voltaire... right? But the curiculum is a bit different... Bonne chance!

Hi all, I heard there's a lady in Doha who makes delicious empanadas for your parties. I am looking for her desperately. Does it ring a bell? Thanks!

It's Dr Maha. I only know a couple of names like Al Areen, Al Markiyah but there are many many more. The best thing to do if your husband has time is to turn up and ask to speak to the manager. You might also get better prices this way. Good luck!

Hi Tia. Schools. Bonaparte is entirely managed by the French diplomacy; Voltaire is a "lycée franco-qatari" and was set up as a partnership between France and Qatar. The population is less French, more international. Bonaparte has got "quotas" and the priority is for French nationals. But you have to be quick, my co-worker had to submit the application for her son end of Feb I believe. Yes both schools are in West Bay. I don't think the Pearl is too far at all. I don't live there but think it's pretty nice and has improved a lot in the last 12 months. It's lively and I see more and more families. Plus a lot of the towers have got great facilities for kids (play rooms, pools). In terms of compound look at West Bay and Duhail. There are also very nice towers in West Bay. Also look at compounds near Landmark: there are plenty and all quite close to Bonaparte and even Voltaire. Nothing to add regarding hospitals for kids. If you go on the French website (vivreauqatar) they recommend French-speaking paeditraticians. I tried so many doctors in Doha, and in the end I gave up and decided to go to one that has never been recommended to me but is very local and I'm happy with her. However, if anything serious happens to your child it is well known that you should take your child to Hamad Hospital and not to Al Ahli and I can confirm that as I had a very scary experience there... I'm pregnant and I see an gynaecologist at Al Ahli that was recommended to me by many friends. She is trained in Germany. Good luck with the move.

Hi, just wanted to say my husband and I had a very bad experience at Queen Medical College in Villagio. He had to get a mole removed and it was not very hygienic (to say the least)... I don't recommend it...

I think they do it at one of the dry cleaners near the AL Markhiya / Burger King round about. My husband dropped some shirts there once and noticed they also did that. But have never tried. Let us know if you try!

Hello ladies, really enjoyed reading everyone's little stories :) Thanks a bunch. Christmas's around the corner now and I've got an 8kg turkey defrosting in my fridge. I've got no idea what to do with it!! Looks like we won't be the only ones sticking around, phhheww. In the end, we're having a few friends coming at home and are even booked for boxing day. I would have loved to camp in the desert as someone suggested... maybe next year. Anyone planning on going to church on the 24th? I don't know if there is a midnight mass somewhere, would be lovely.

Yes, if the maid only comes 4 hours a week, 25 QAR is the minimum I would say. You might even have to pay transport on top. Actually 25 qar / hour through an agency is quite good. The agencies I contacted asked for QAR 35 per hour! I pay my maid 20 an hour but she comes 25 hours a week (that is every afternoon). I mainly hire her to care for my baby. I'm fairly new to Doha too but I feel I've become an expert on these matters and I think other ladies here would second this. Maids/Nannies are much cheaper when they are live in and they don't have to pay for their own visa. Hope that helps.

Ok, yes, you're right. Will start Xmas tree hunting tomorrow. Has anyone tested a good Christmas brunch in the past? Couldn't find an answer to that on the forum.

So basically, once my husband get his RP I'll be on a [b'>family [/b'>visa (right?) and this shouldn't prevent me from working? Understand - I don't really need a sponsor to work 2 days here and 3 days there? And then I can just invoice my client from here without really registering myself? I will definitely contact Qatar News Agency, and the French embassy too.

Thx for your answers. Looking into sponsoring on the forum. I think you might be right though, not having a RP yet is going to make things a bit tricky. Can anyone recommend one of these agencies where I can find a temp nanny? Thx!

@lalala and ccdoha I am a resident at Marriotts but I'm pretty sure it's open. Will investigate prices as well. And regarding accomodations, I think I'm with you. I'm not quite sure I'm "ready" for the compound experience yet. I only have a 7-month old baby and we might be happy in a flat closer to where my husband works (Katara). I saw the Beverly hills 3 villas, they are very nice and I truly mean this, but somehow I just cannot imagine myself in anything like that. The one thing that I would envy though is this community spirit that is difficult to have in the towers. I don't know...

I don't know yet what is a decent budget for housing in Doha, but I will definitely try to get something in one of these two areas. @lalala I meant the pool on 7th floor of the Marriott Renaissance just by City Centre. It was mentioned in a previous thread about the new restaurants in the building. It only opened a few weeks ago so people don't know it yet. It's big and not crowded (even on weekends, from my experience). I really like it but haven't been to that many places. And has a good wifi connection as you can see :D

Hey bringing the waxing discussion back to life. Do you know if Marriott and/or Bliss use warm or hot wax? There is a massive difference in terms of... pain!

cheers everyone - the corniche seems close and far at the same time. As you said, the lack of zebra crossings makes the life of anyone with a pushchair an absolute nightmare. lalala we don't have a car at all at the moment, I'm totally new in town! I discovered the Marriott's outdoor pool today and it's quiet and lovely. Going to explore all the areas you mentioned too hoping to find a bit of grass. I don't think we'll be here for too long anyway - we're looking for a permanent home now. If you have suggestions of good areas to live in with a baby, I'm interested too! Had a private tour of the Pearl, the project is exciting but it seems a bit expensive.
