Hi Tabathatoo, I am the wife of an EK FO and we have 2 teenage children. I am happy for you to PM me and I can provide you with a list of our outgoings....if I put it here the thread may get lost with discussion about the cost of this and that. That said, I can tell you, we have nothing much left over from month to month and we are not extravagant. Apart from the school fee top up and sports fees we also have to deal with spending money (pocket money) for our teenagers (very difficult to get a part time job here for kids, unlike home) and nothing much is free here for the kids. In the summer there aren't any outdoor free activities so you need to factor in money for movies, mall, they go to lunch with their friends etc. but perhaps you have small children. Other costs include your TV and Internet package, loan on a car, school trips (generally overseas) excursions, gym membership, or membership to one of the EK clubs so that you can get some discount if you do decide to eat out. anyway, more than happy to provide more detail if you would like. Good luck.

I would suggest you read Pprune - Middle East and look at any of the threads on lifestyle. I'm not saying it is all like this, but it may give you a more balanced decision...or maybe not. Not advocating the site. just mentioning it, as I have never been surrounded by so many disgruntled Middle East pilots...lifestyle or lack there of it, high flying hours, little time at home, particularly bad if you have little ones, cost of living and lack of company support. The bottom line is....being a pilot in the Middle East ATM is stressful and so is being a pilots wife. There are lots of pluses, travel etc but the decision needs to be very carefully weighed up.

Hi mumto3darlings, Yes lots of the Meydan villas are already occupied. The villa itself is good but there is no yard/garden really and a lot of the residents are complaining about the lack of privacy ( they are built extremely close to each other) but the size and location is good.

Agree with a Basil and stix....they are correct. They ATAR score will vary depending on demand. The comment about the universities not honouring offers is incorrect. All you need to do is contact the university of choice. They will provide you with a point system...Eg A* equals 4 points , A equals 3 points etc they will also provide you with previous years indicative scores required for certain courses, that said, the scores will vary slightly depending on demand.

I have my 80+ parents here at the moment. They would dearly love to do a cruise but their bed time is 7.30 :) so I need to find them a daytime one. I did the research before they arrived and found one departing from the Marina....from memory it wasn't a dhow, more so a flat based boat...but either will do. I have googled and googled and it's driving me mad as I can no longer find the boat trip I had previously found and in fact I can't find anything during the day. Any help would really be appreciated.

We, unlike many of you, have done Asia to death as home for us is Australia, so the fact that we are getting to see Europe is amazing for us...and we love it. Recently we have been to Germany and Prague and loved both destinations. When we first arrived here we went to Paris and Rome as they really were on top of our dream list. I spend heaps of time doing my research and have found divine little boutique hotels in some of the cities we have visited. This year we are planning on Zanzibar...we kind of thought we were doing something different but based on the number of recommendations already to your response...perhaps not. LOL We love Bangkok for ease of getting around on public transport, the food and the cheap shopping but we were not so keen on Phuket...much prefer Bali and have been there many times. Seminyak is the best area to stay in my opinion with a few days in Ubud. We spent last summer in Malta and for a lazy beach/hotel/pool kind of holiday we really enjoyed it.

We were in Phuket a few months ago and we stayed at three different resorts. I would not recommend Thavorn Beach resort...looks lovely online and gets good reviews but we did not enjoy our four day stay there at all. Yes it has immediate access to the beach, massive pool etc but it was not clean, the restaurant was poor and the service to our rooms was extremely slow....overall a dated hotel, not in a good location. Baan Yin Dee is a Boutique Resort just up the hill out of Patong. The rooms are huge, the views are beautiful and the food and service was excellent. Perhaps not ideal for little ones. The best resort we stayed at was The Marina Resort Kata....AMAZING! Direct access to the beach, a fabulous open air restaurant, beautiful pool area with waterfall and children's pool and pool bar and the rooms really are something special. We felt like we were in the jungle. And a baby elephant visits the hotel most mornings and our children loved going to visit him.

Hi Arch, so exactly why are you wondering? Have you been to WA? Do you have any understanding of the area? Let me help you out...WA is less than 200 years old and it's sparse population is due to the desert environment....

We brought one in about two weeks ago from Thailand...I just packed it in my suitcase as it was too large for hand luggage and to be honest, we didn't even think about it. We didn't have any problems.

Thanks Meagle, Geordie & Iamaaz, truly helpful information, I have spent the last few days following up on the accommodation, dinner options etc that you have suggested. I have direction in my planning, finally. can I ask if any of you caught the ferry to the islands or did you fly? We were going to take the ferry for a bit of 'adventure' but from what I can find on google, flying seems to be a far easy option?

We've been to Bali many times and would highly recommend Seminyak for a first time visitor. It is on the boarder or Legian. Hotels are being built all of the time and I'm sure there are many new ones, but we love to stay at the Kumala Pantai. It's opposite the beach and in walking distance to many good restaurants and shops. My sisters love the Padma Hotel as well. We are a family of 5.

We are taking an Emirates flight into Athens and spending 1 night there and then taking a ferry from Pireaus Port to Mykonos and the another ferry from Mykonos to Santorini. Our children are teenagers, so the ferry ride is a bit of an adventure.

I haven't been to Satwa yet but have wanted to. Is there a particular landmark or area in Satwa or is it as simple as going there, park and walk until I find one? Thanks for this. edited by Trigg Beach on 13/03/2013

Based on the advice below, we are looking at flying into Geneva...(taking bus/train (haven't worked this out yet) to Chamonix and we have found a nice hotel in the centre of Chamonix to stay 1 or 2 nights. Hopefully we will get to see/touch snow. My last question is....we are not attempting any skiing, we are just looking around - do we need specific ski clothes/boots or can we get away with really warm clothing?

Ok great. So if we take a flight into Geneva, would it be best to book into a hotel there and then look at booking a day trip/tour to see snow? Sorry to sound soo dense, we are not familiar with any of this kind of thing :)

Thanks Cheeky Monkey...good news as I kind of need them now. I don't take anything special..just the same ones for years...they are called Monofeme The pack says: Monofeme 28 TAB 150MCG - 30 MCG, Levonorgestrel with Ethinyloestradiol. Does anyone know if these are available under another name here? Thanks so much. edited by Trigg Beach on 20/07/2012 edited by Trigg Beach on 20/07/2012

We stayed at the Golden Tulip Khasab two weekends ago. Ideally located if you are taking a Dhow cruise. It's not "flash" but it is clean and has a nice pool area with baby's pool and swing set and the food by the pool and in the restaurant was nice. Our room was a good size with two double beds and a sitting area.

I used to buy my teenage daughter Naprogesic or Ponstan for period pain in Oz. Our local pharmacy is very well stocked but the English is not great. I'm not in the mood for a lengthy converstaion about what it is I am actually trying to buy, nor do I feel like acting out the symptoms (as I have had to do previously for other purchases)...so can one of you ladies let me know a brand name I can ask for without too much trouble. Thanks so much.

I took mine to Emax at MCC after posting on here and someone suggesting to do so. We were happy with price and the service. Sorry I can't remember exactly how much but I think around 250 and it only took a day. If you take it in they will give you a quote first.

I had the same size baby, forceps delivery, massive blood loss (anaemic) and the episiotomy but I didn't have an epidural or spinal block so I can't help with that bit. The blood transfusion will really help her in terms of her energy to get through the day with a new bub. Don't stress too much, it's harder when you can't be there, she is in a great country and will get the best medical attention.
