I pay the same as Sue62. During winter, I feel as though it's a donation but during summer he has much more to do....so it evens out. Not sure what maths Genie is using in her calculation.

Hey Sanndy_Dog.....how was your trip to Oman? If you ended up doing a dhow trip can I ask how it was and approx cost? Thanks. Editing as it seems as though I know you...it's just I was searching old posts on Oman and came across yours. You have sooo many posts so I thought you'd be a reliable source. Just to clarify.

Thanks MirdifIngrid...I think you have helped me on another thread. We are all Australian...so I'll take some pens and get it all sorted at the border...much easier than what I was expecting.

Hi and apologies in advance, We have visitors coming and they want to go to Oman...we haven't been as yet. I'm on the online visa application website and it says: This is yet another initiative from Royal Oman Police in enhancing its services to minimize the time and efforts of people. It enables people to fill Visa Application form online through the ROP website, thus reducing the time taken for purchasing the application form and getting it typed. It also removes the time taken by the visa officer to re-type the information at the time of submission. Currently the service allows submission of applications for NEW VISA & RENEWAL OF RESIDENCE VISA (NEW) The online application process requires the user to: Step 1: Fill up and submit the Online Visa Application Form Step 2: Print the completed form Step 3: Take the printed form enclosed with the required documents to the nearest ROP Visa office It's a tourist visa application I am attempting to do for SEVEN people (great)....do I really need to take it to a ROP office??

All the information you need is in the EK Employee Handbook. My DH is away at the moment so I can't get onto the EK staff page until he gets home, otherwise I'd direct you to the exact spot. My children are here now and the school they attend directly bills EK so it is very simple. That siad, they were attending school in Australia for a period and we had to pay the school fes and then put an Education Claim in which is done electronically on HR direct and followed up with original receipts into EK HQ.

Well now I am excited!!! Thanks so much for the responses and for the visa tip. We are staying at the Grand Hotel which I think seems pretty central. We will only be there 4-5 days but I will start looking into hiring a tour guide. Just one last question..do you know what the cost of living is like? Just for a casual meal out and taxi's etc. Thanks so much again.

Hi charchar, We live in Cedre Villas, I'll keep an eye out for him and I have asked my children to do so as well. Our cat went wandering just for half a day last week (usually a house cat) but I left our back door open and when I got home she was laying in the lounge room....such a relief.

I thought he was gorgeous at school but he was 2 years older, then when I was 18 and had finished my final exams I went to visit my sister who was teaching in a small country town. Whilst there she told me she was inviting a friend over for dinner and his brother was in town so he was coming along......it was the boy from school! 26 years later we are still madly in love.

Trigg Beach how did you get EK to pay uni fees I thought they didn't pay for uni even for the time up to the child turns 19?? Hi Angela, DH is away at the moment so I can't log in and quote from the Employee Handbook....but it is in there under Education Allowance. In Oz you finish your last year of secondary school when you are 17 and EK will pay until your child turns 19 whther that be secondary or tertiary.

A tourist visa will require your son to come in and out every 30 days - but that will only be at Xmas time when Uni breaks for a couple of months, the other breaks are less than 30 days...and as you said, he can take a quick trip and come back into Dubai. I'm assuming he is an Australian citizen, so he doesn't need any paper work, he can just arrive here.

Hi jamhind, Our son is studying at an Australian University here in Dubai, but I think I can help with some of your questions. Medicare: you say your son will be residing (continuing to live) in Australia and only visiting you in Dubai in the Uni breaks. If this is the case, whatever arrangements you curently have in terms of Medicare will remain the same. I'm assuming he has his own card and if not, you would need to arrange this prior to leaving Australia. So Medicare will cover him whist he is a student in Australia. You ask about whether he needs to move here with you to get maximum benefits from the company. If you are talking EK - then he will be covered up until the day he turns 19 in terms of uni fees etc - of course, when I say covered there is a maximum fee they will pay. Visa: if it's EK - then he can come into Dubai sponsored on your husbands visa until he is 19 and then he obtains a student visa through the uni. If he is coming in just for short holiday's and summer break then he would come in on a tourist visa. Hope this helps.

I only read recently an article interviewing the GM of the Sheraton and he said, "we want our customers to take the slippers and we wamt our customers to take all of the bathroom products. When they use them at home it makes them want to come and stay with us again"...he went on to say that they do not want their customers to take the towels and robes...... So take them, wear them, wash them and chuck them out when you are done.

Just to endorse what has already been said and to advise from a personal experience. I have a son and a daughter of similar age and they have commenced in a UK school (and are not from the UK) and socially they have had no problems. They commenced in September. They have made lots of friends and really enjoy it here. From an academic point of view, for my children, I am very happy with their results and they are managing sport/home/school/ friends very well. Good luck! PS: another upside, he's a boy...so you won't have to deal with the constant whine to go clothes shopping at the Dubai Mall...a big saving there, let me tell you!

You could pick any capital city in Australia....or if you want to see the Outback I would highly recommend a trip to the Northern Territory, especially in July/August. We took our 3 children in 2008 and they were aged: 15, 11 & 9 and it is still the holiday they talk about the most. We flew into Uluru (Ayres Rock) and spent 2 days there where we walked around the rock and did a tour of the Olga's (another huge rock). We then flew to Alice Springs (wouldn't recommend) and then to Darwin. Darwin was a fabulous base, we toured Litchfield National park and swam in rock pools and saw the most amazing waterfalls. We did a crocodile boat trip (day only) which the kids loved and we went to a dinner under the stars in the desert where we ate crocodile and kangaroo canapes (sorry animal lovers) and listened to the didgeridoo and dreamtime stories from Aboriginal story tellers. There is an Aboriginal saying that you can't pick a didgeridoo but the didge picks you. The children were so facinated that we spent a day wandering the shops and finally they found the didge that they wanted (or it found them) and they had a few lessons whilst we were in Darwin and my son now plays very well. Great memories!

Excellent thanks Chocs01. When I came to Dubai last year I 'moved' here, so I actually haven't entered the country as a visitor. When he comes back in from Australia do I need to have completed any paper work for his visa or is he able to'visit' for 30 days? Thanks again.

He has an Australian passport. Al Quwatain, thanks for this, I stupidly was probably going to let in lapse and then bring him back in as a tourist...your advice is appreciated. So, currently, DH is sponsored by Emirates, and he has sponsored DS. His Visa expires in the 15th April, his 1 week trip home in April is flexible, do I cancel prior to leaving and if so, will he be right to get through passport control when he leaves Dubai? He is then coming back to Dubai to spend a bit 'free' time (Uni will be finished) get his results and then pack up and go back to Australia in May. Hope this is enough info to enable a response.

This coming summer will be our first, and yes I am taking the kids home...and I will spend weeks driving teenagers from friends and movies etc and I won't have DH with me because we decided we'd rather him home at Christmas.....so based on that I'm not expecting it to be a holiday.

At the moment it is very cold, there was the snow a few days ago, and an extra wave of cold and maybe more snow is expected for this weekend. This is quite exceptional so, as usual, the municipality has been totally not prepared to face the situationdespite the forecasts, they didn't even have the salt to spread on the streets before the snowfall, so imagine the ice and people slipping on it! Hope this time the weatherforecast alerts will be listened to! So, you might encounter some discomfort but, if you are lucky enough to see a snowfall in real time on the ancient momuments, you will know you are experiencing something really unique. Which I missed last week! Where are you staying? Never seen snow at all...so my fingers are crossed. We are staying at The Daphne Veneto, I can't find a bad word about it on trip advisor and it seems (not that I'd know) to be well located. If you get a chance google it and tell me what you think. Thanks so much for the info.

@Akia,so true enjoy the ride. Trigg Beach I think in many cases it is what the DH feelings are that trickle down to DW.Can fully understand where you come from, my DH was born to fly it was so much more than a career. edited by Nomad on 08/02/2012 Thanks Nomad....it is lovely to know that you get it. It's not about the climb....I just love being married (for 20 years) to someone who loves his job and is happy to come home...to me! I know too may people whose husbands are under pressure, hate their jobs etc....it doesn't make for a happy household! edited by Trigg Beach on 08/02/2012

"pointy end" in that post meant got upgrade to Captain. Obviously someone else's DH wanted and didn't get an upgrade (or more like, the DW thought he should have got it) and their nose was put out of joint. More often than not it's the DW's not the pilots themselves that are at the cause of the rivalry... most often the men are aware of where they need to work on to be accepted for a promotion, most pilots are at any given point, working towards something else, be it a new type, an upgrade or whatever! Hey Skykitty, I usually love your posts...but not sure of your logic for "more often than not it's DW's.." My DH fits none of the above...and I know several others too.....believe it or not, many pilots just enjoy the ride and the lifestyle and are not interested in anything else...just FYI

Hi Napo, We arrived last year and we live in Silicon Oasis. Personally I think it is a great area for families and I'm surprised there are no villas available....there are definately some that are empty but perhaps not available to Emirates? I don't know much about Al Safa except that the location is good. I too have been wondering if there is any type of support groups/netwroks for pilot's wives or in your case Pinkleton, Navy wives.
